enemies (kinda) to lovers!minho
in which your rivalry with lee minho turns into something new
2.7k words (unedited)
it should be common knowledge that you didn’t like lee minho. the two of you were the top dancers of your school and had been since freshman year of high school. now, freshman year of college, you both ended up attending the same school and continued your rivalry for the top spot in the dance department. but minho always had the upper hand. he always got the solo in every competition, got all the first place prizes. every opportunity you had to show your talent, he took. to simply say he annoyed you was an understatement. you would say you hated him.
the year was now nearing competition season. your instructor was moments away from announcing who would be taking the solo for your next competition. you had been working extra hard this time round to make sure you could get this solo. you thought you had it in the bag. keyword: thought. "instead of a solo for this competition, i’ve decided to have a duet" your instructor announced to everyone in the studio, "the two dancers chosen for this duet will be asked to choreograph a dance together." as soon as the words left her mouth, your soul left your body.
"our duet will consist of none other than y/n and minho!" she spoke proudly. there it was, your worst nightmare come true. had it been any other dancer in the entire department, you wouldve been flawless. there was absolutely no way you could possibly be alone with minho without getting into at least one argument. you took the opportunity to catch a glance at your new partner to find him looking at the instructor with an exasperated look on his face. you slowly get up from your spot on the cold studio floor and make your way across to the other side where minho is still sat. as he sees you coming over he has a slight hint of amusement in his expression. "looks like we’re finally partners" he speaks in a pompous tone. the slight smirk on his face is so familiar to you, you barely notice it.
"i guess so, but that’s nothing to be too excited about" you started, "i’d rather be paired up with anyone else." for a millisecond you swear you could see a glimmer of hurt in his eyes. it’s quickly covered up, however, with a more prominent smirk than before, "hm, i would say you’re lucky to be my partner, considering i’m the best dancer in our department." that simple comment was enough to get your blood to boil, there was probably smoke coming from your ears at that point. you didn’t want to respond to his remark. you didn’t want to give him the satisfaction.
it had been a week since you got paired up with minho and needless to say, you got no work done. you only had six more weeks to choreograph a dance and practice it until it was perfect. despite how much you despised the idea of dancing with minho, you still wanted to do amazing in this competition. as everyone slowly filed out of the studio you walked towards the large speaker in the corner around which minho had been hovering.
"i think we should work on our choreography," you spoke abruptly, shaking the boy from his thoughts. something about him seemed off. you furrowed your eyebrows, but quick to change your expression the second he turned to face you. "yeah, sure, that’s fine," he spoke quietly but still with a hint of harshness. it was unlike his normal loud tone you often heard when he was talking to the other dancers. as he brought his eyes up to meet yours, you noticed the prominent dark bags under them. he must not have slept much. for once, you felt a little bit of sympathy for the tired boy.
despite how obvious it was that he was tired, minho didn’t let it show while you started choreographing your dance. he worked just as diligently as always and you didn’t want to admit it, but you were impressed. you still didn’t want him to overwork himself.
"minho, why don’t you take a break, i’ll practice the chorus more," you spoke up. he looked at you with an unreadable expression. "i can go over it with you again if you need me to?" his face changed to a more concerned one and you thought you might’ve felt your heart flutter for a moment.
"no i’m okay, you look like you need the rest, anyway" you sent him a quick smile. he responded with just a nod and walked over to the corner where his bag was left hours ago. you watched him take a gulp of water then curl up with his bag before you got back to practicing.
another hour had passed by the time you decided to stop. you forgot minho was still in the room, he was so quiet. you turned around to find him sleeping in the same position you saw him in an hour ago. you almost didn’t want to wake him up but it was nearing 10pm and you knew he wouldn’t want to sleep in the studio all night.
"minho" you crouched down next to the sleeping boy. he didn’t budge. "minhooo" you said in a sing-song type of voice, nudging him shoulder lightly. his eyes fluttered open and he yawned gently, resembling a kitten. he jumped a little when he saw you waiting next to him but relaxed again before speaking, "how long was i asleep?" the way he spoke was soft and kind. it was something you hadn’t heard from him in the years you had known him. "only an hour, it’s almost 10 though, you should probably go back to your dorm and sleep some more," you explained in a tone that paralleled his.
"oh okay," his calm expression didn’t leave his face as he started to get up from his spot, you following his actions not long after. "i’ll see you tomorrow," he said quickly, leaving you in the studio by yourself. you let out a harsh sigh, exhausted from the hours of work you put into this dance. grabbing your bag, you shut the lights off and left the studio.
the weeks had gone by quickly. you and minho had stayed after class to practice your duet a few times a week. you had to admit it was going pretty well, the two of you worked better together than you thought you would. now there was only two more days until the competition and you were excited, but also anxious.
the two of you planned to go to the studio despite not having class today to review the choreo one more time before the final performance. you showed up first and decided to stretch while you waited for minho. 45 more minutes passed and you still hadn’t seen him. it shouldn’t have taken him more than 15 to get there. you were starting to getting worried that he was just flat out ditching you. his dorm was close by so you thought it wouldn’t hurt to stop by and see if he was there.
a short walk brought you to the door of his room. you tapped lightly. then a little harder. then even harder. no answer. you could feel the frustration building up until the door swung open. on the other side, you found a tired minho looking worse than you had ever seen him. just as he was about to open his mouth— "don’t you know what time it is??? you were supposed to meet me at the studio an hour ago!" you spoke before he could.
minho’s eyes widened as soon as the words left your mouth. you watched as he quickly turned his head to look at the clock on his wall. 1:09 pm. "oh my god. i am so so so sorry, i slept in and i guess i didn’t hear my alarm go off. i promise i didn’t leave you there on purpose," he started scrambling around his room grabbing clothes. you softened up a little at the sight of it. you came up next to minho just as he took hold of a shirt from his closet and put a hand on his shoulder.
"wait, no, its okay, you don’t need to rush," you pouted slightly as he looked at you. "its not that big of a deal, but you look like you haven’t slept in years, whats up?" you took his hand into yours and walked him over to his bed and motioned for him to sit down as you did the same. you watched as he sat facing you, his eyes still struggling to stay open. "i don’t know, i just don’t sleep much at night?" he said almost as if it was a question. you stuck out your bottom lip in a pout yet again and asked another question, "why not?"
"hm .. i stay up late practicing most nights, sometimes until three or four in the morning," he said nonchalantly. he acted like it was just another part of his daily routine, and in a way, it was. "that’s not healthy, you know?" you stated the obvious. "i knowww," he dragged it out in a way that was kind of cute, "but i can’t help it, i always find ways i can improve myself and once i find those things, i work on it until im satisfied."
"but you still need to take care of yourself. plus, you are already an amazing dancer, even if you have a few flaws, no one else would notice," you spoke softly. it was the truth, you always knew he was one of the best dancers you had ever met. there was a little sparkle in minho’s eyes when he looked back up at you. "you really think so?" he questioned. "of course." he gave you a kind smile, "thank you." you returned the smile.
"how bout this, you can take a quick nap then we can go to the studio at 3 to practice," you proposed. "are you sure?" minho seemed unsure of your plan. "yeah! that way you can get a little more rest and we still have a lot of time to perfect the choreo!" you said ecstatically. he giggled a little bit at your excitement. "okay, but can you stay here with me? so i don’t end up oversleeping again?" it was his turn to pout, in an attempt to convince you. "i guess i can do that," you replied with a small grin.
you woke up to the sound of the alarm you had set to wake up minho. somehow you found yourself laying beside him with his arms wrapped tightly around your waist and for some reason, you didn’t mind. it was the most peaceful you had ever seen him. sadly, it couldn’t last for much longer as you had already made a deal. you gently pulled his arms away from your waist and sat up. minho only stirred for a moment before he readjusted positions, his arms yet again finding their way around your sitting figure. he was like a little kid, you thought.
you tapped on his arm, trying to wake him up. "minho," you spoke quietly. something in you had the urge to run your hand through his hair, so thats exactly what you did. as your fingers found their way to his hair, you said his name again. you watched as he slowly woke up from his state of deep sleep. as soon as he saw you looking down at him, a pink blush covered his cheeks. you brought your hand back to your lap and he removed his from your waist. only a few seconds passed by before you spoke again, "its a little past three, do you want to head to the studio?"
"yeah, that sounds good," he stuttered out, getting up to grab his bag. the two of you left his dorm in a silence that was almost deafening. thankfully, it didn’t last very long. things were back to normal as soon as you started dancing. you spent what felt like an eternity in the studio. it was nearing 8:30pm when you finally decided you had practiced enough. the sounds from your stomach that echoed throughout the room made it obvious you needed to eat something. not a moment had passed before minho spoke up. "do you wanna grab something to eat before we go back home?" he offered.
"yeah, i’m starving," you answered, unaware of the boy who was watching you with heart in his eyes. you gathered your things as minho did the same. the two of you walked out together and headed to the nearest fast food restaurant. minho went off to order the food that he had offered to pay for. as you sat at your table waiting you could help but let your thoughts roam. the more you thought, the more your mind drifted towards minho. you realized that over the past few weeks he had been acting so kind towards you. but before you could think any further into it, you heard an oh so familiar voice.
"i’m back," minho said with a bright smile. he set down the tray of food in front of you and took the seat across from yours. "you okay?" he took notice of the unreadable expression on your face. you quickly regained your composure and replied with a smile, "oh yeah i’m fine, i was just thinking about the competition tomorrow." he nodded as he put a couple fries in his mouth. "are you nervous?" he inquired, "because you don’t need to be. you’re gonna do great, and with me by your side, you’ll look even better." he wiggled his eyebrows along with that last part. you rolled your eyes at his remark but couldnt hold back a giggle. "thank you,, i think" you responded before taking a bite of the burger in your hands.
15 minutes until the performance. you could feel your hands trembling more and more as the minutes passed. 5 minutes. minho was standing beside you now. he noticed your nervous state and gave your back a light pat. "you’ll be okay," he said quietly. the gesture made a little smile appear on your face. before you knew it, you were being ushered onto the stage to perform. you had done this a thousand times before but you still got nervous every time. you got in position and as soon as you saw minho’s face, your nerves calmed themselves.
the whole time you performed, you radiated the most confidence you ever have. the dance went off without a hitch. as the music died down, it was quickly replaced by the sound of applause. you turned your head to look at minho and you shared a smile. the two of you quickly bowed and ran off stage. as soon as you were out of the audience’s sight, you let out a scream and jumped around like a little kid. you turned to see minho chuckling at the sight. without a second thought you jumped to give him a hug. he reciprocated and whispered just loud enough for you to hear, "you did amazing, just like i knew you would."
"thank you, minho, you did too," you pulled away from his grasp but the smile never left your face. minho looked back at you and took a couple moments to think about what he was about to say. "this is probably weird because i know we didn’t start off on the right foot but after spending these last few weeks with you i realized thatyou'renotthatbadandimightevenlikeyoualittlebit so i was wondering if you wanted to have dinner with me again once we’re finished here?" you took notice of the bright pink brushed across his face and let out a tiny laugh. "that sounds great," you leaned in just a little and lowered your voice, "and i think i like you too." you moved back to your original position and came face to face with minho’s even deeper blush.
your team ended up winning first place, not to anyone’s surprise. "you ready to go?" minho smiled. "i think so," you responded. as the two you walked out into the night, you glanced down at his hand, then back at his face. he quickly noticed this, "what?" after only a couple seconds you sheepishly asked, "can i hold your hand?" you internally freaked out, not wanting to sound too weird. without a word, minho slipped his hand into yours and intertwined your fingers. you gave his hand a small squeeze to show your satisfaction.
(writer’s note: this is my first writing on this blog so i’m sorry if its bad :[ i had fun with it though)
