sharpe crawling through the fireplace i.... that was... that was all so excessively described and i loved every minute of it. hhhhhhd and then just collapsing at the bottom and shivering calling for grace i'm?!!??? it's like cornwell can't survive writing a book without sharpe get some kind of horrifying physical injury and/or a panic attack. that is not a complaint.

ah, this book is a bit more meandering than the others. seems like sharpe doesn't quite have a goal besides "hang around and see what's happening" for now. which is... fine, but i'm much more used to him having a more active part in affecting the situation around him, or at least having some kind of plan. like even stuck on the ship, there were specific places he was headed. this one he just kinda got roped into a Thing, Thing went bad and he's left puttering around denmark all "¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯ guess i'll cry or murder someone"

but aw my heart melts every time it's mentioned sharpe plays with lil kids.

sighs and dreams about how competent and helpful Teresa would be in place of the girl of the week. not that sarah is doing like... terribly. but i yearn for the confidence and competence of my beloved Teresa and her unflinching courage. she's so cool and i'm so gay. sharpe/teresa is a queer ship and idk how to explain it. probably the big bisexual energy on both of them lmao.

i do appreciate cornwell letting the ladies commit Extreme Violence in this book lol. they deserve to. as a treat. all women should get to stab a dude at least once in every book.

hhhdg my fingers are itching to try recreating the sketch the officer did of sharpe sleeping in the doorway. im chewing on the idea of it, of trying to match what sharpe saw in it vs. what it probably did look like. vs. what everyone else saw in it. it's about the implications of his view of himself!!!!

these officers are literally fighting like school children, im gonn cry omg.

oh no. i'm not half way through and sharpe has met The Woman of the book which means i gotta put up with their romance bits now UGH

normally u dont want the mc of a book to get shot and hurt in every fight, but i started down this path because of whump and i'm sticking to it. and i know sharpe just got the shit kicked out of him like 2 days ago but i need MORE it's not slowing him down enough!!!

i wasnt having a good time with all the battle descriptions but im having a good time again with all this interpersonal drama.

alright, you know what i'll retract some of my judgement of cornwell pairing every woman he writes with sharpe because, honestly, every time sharpe makes a new male friend i immediatly go "oooooh i bet they fucked". so, really, it's just that sharpe has bicycle vibes.

also, sharpe yeeting himself over the fortress wall only to find like Everyone has followed him and he's now shouting orders at a captain, and immediatly being 😳 lmao.

hdgsfsf fuckin stokes out here seeing morris has been beaten up, figures out sharpe did it, and then is like "oh im gonna gaslight the HELL out of morris on this one".

also every time sharpe gets told no by an officer and he just goes "manslaughter it is then" and punches them. baby this is why you aren't getting promoted. wellesley is gonna start seeing a pattern between officers you've served under and officers who get stabbed and killed lmao.

also the image of sharpe, covered in blood, face cut open, tear streaks through the dust on his face, standing in the middle of the opening southern gate with a bloody claymore resting over his shoulder, glaring both defiantly and exhaustedly forward is something i super wanna draw 👀

well i'm so glad i just called myself out in that last bit because, guess what this book opens with? a navy captain. a handsome captain who hugs sharpe and is so very, very thankful to him and seems like a nice guy :). bernie why are you doing this to me :).

sharpe feeling comfy asking him questions and then getting lovingly fed a big meal hhfhsbss. chase is fucking trying to seduce him so hard rn im dying.

hgshsh ONE night with sharpe and chase is all "oh sharpe you're so cool i wanna use my reputation to help you someday uwu" BRUH

and writing a letter so that sharpe will go visit captain chase's wife and family like??? captain chase is 100% the epitome of the "i've had sharpe for 1 evening but if anything happened to him, i'd kill everyone in this room and then myself" meme.

now...... imagine... an alternate scenario where sharpe is being lead about by teresa with a rope around his neck 😏

so, pretty much teresa and sharpe's first kiss is the "only one bed" trope only as "only one steam bed to hide from the french in". anyway, cliche but also cute. i'll accept it. also teresa asking sharpe if she can leave now, and he's just all "👉👈 yeah"

absolute 🥰 over teresa getting to shoot with the rifles, love that for her so much. love harper being all about giving her a battlefield lesson on the gun.

......cornwell wrote this entire fucking battle just for me i think. teresa joins the ranks, sharpe gets shot and badly injured, sharpe collapses and is caught and gently lowered down by harper, and amazing Lossow the Horse Girl Officer has arrived for a rescue. Amazing, A+, literally the best series of events i've ever read. this is probably the only large scale battle i've actually kept invested in lmao.

god this is that good emotional popcorn shit, that's what this is. this really would have made a great episode and its a shame it.... ended up like it did in the show lmao. i would have especially loved the scene of harper holding down sharpe to cauterize the shoulder wound :3c. but ah well, just as good in written form really!

also if cornwell kills lossow's horse i'm gonna fight him

ah every time the ship temeraire is mentioned i just have to imagine a big black dragon flying over the water instead of the battleship oops 😅

*cornwell describes a ship battle with lots of technical terms for things* wow this is neat sounding! i wish i knew what literally any of these words meant! though to be fair i cannot ever picture what land battles look like either. people be talking about flanks and skirmish lines engagements dictated by landscapes and i am just sitting all ":D i dont get it but neato. pew pew! hope they win or do bad idk!"

i must say, cornwell has a really artistic way of describing violence and, well, gore lmao. he gets really painterly when talking about explosions and destruction. i like it! paints a nice kind of impressionist idea of a scene, but also zooms in for some nice details. like, the bit with the blood on deck, running towards sharpe. and he watches it tip with the waves until it reaches him where he stamps it out so it stops running. just seeing sharpe so focused on it, stuck with nothing he can do as he waits, but he isnt the type to just ignore the gore and let it continue either. good boy, soft baby boy.

oh :( poor grace tho. her sitting under the waterline, scraping at the wood and thinking about how sharpe as a kid must have felt like pulling apart the tarred ropes. makes me like her quite a bit, idk why. just such a small, personal thing for her care about, especially when she herself is scared. i hope she shoots her husband lol.

I also like how Harper tends to be the genre/plot aware one. he's not the MC so he doesn't get caught out on things like Sharpe does, but him being *aware* of that makes it more fun and believable.

hhhhhgggg i think ... one thing i do actually dislike about cornwell's writing is his PoV switches. like, if he switched to Harper for a bit or such it would be fine, but his secondary and even tertiary povs are always temporary characters and... i understand why, plot wise, but it doesn't stop me from being drastically less interested in these other povs. i really just only want to hear about sharpe and the men OR someone else thinking/talking about sharpe and the men.

new week, new book! very excited to see where this goes, since we start of pretty early with sharpe holding himself back from committing to a "manslaught it is" solution to his problem. just so he can trade that for a different, better manslaughter plan.

and now going to the workhouse, hhh wow, ok. so this book is just going to give me everything i've ever wanted in seeing sharpe face his childhood. that's... dhhf good. this is fine. even as an adult having killed and survived just So Much Shit, one fucker can make him freeze, just for a moment, because of how much Sharpe is being flooded by horrible memories. *chef kiss* thanks for the good food, cornwell.

of all things, my next planned fic specifically deals with Sharpe having to face down an old trauma in the worst way possible so i'm excited to have this as a frame of reference to help me make him handle it in an even more unhinged way.

sometimes listening to a sharpe book describe military tactics/facts is like watching an anime that has to describe how a character's power works every time they use it in a new episode. it's not a bad thing it's being described in each book, but i'm also having to hear it many times in quick succession lol. it's fine. this is my own fault for binge reading and it's fine

god i appreciate how often sharpe is just like... dumb. not actively, but like banging his head on the ship and jumping because a yell startles him. they're just nice little moments that help to shave off the edge other characters like him have. he's a beast when he goes killing, but the rest of time it's just anxiety, shyness, and Doing His Best and it's a fantastic combo. you always see the softness of his heart coming through.

i have at this point entirely forgotten about grace tho, sorry. the captain chase brain rot has taken over. you cant write someone that friendly and into sharpe and expect my gay ass to not immediately plot a oneshot about it. let's be real.
