the Brothers Theerapanyakun
on ao3
There was no warning. One minute, Kim was working on lyrics for a new song, his apartment blissfully empty and quiet. The next, his entire team, including the ones who typically cased the block and never entered his building, swarmed through his front door. They fanned out around him, two grabbing his arms and lifting him to his feet, and quickly escorted him out into an armored car. Kim didn’t bother fighting or asking questions while they were moving; something bad had happened. Causing a fuss wouldn’t do anything but delay the security team’s response and possibly piss off his father.
Once the car was moving, Kim looked around. “What happened? Where are we going?”
“We’re returning to the compound,” Bible, his personal bodyguard, informed him. “It’s the most secure place for you.”
“My father? My brothers?”
“Khun Korn and Khun Tankhun are safe.”
Kim’s blood ran cold. “Where’s Kinn?” Bible hesitated. Kim grabbed the front of his shirt and pulled him close. “Where’s Kinn?”
“Missing,” Bible admitted. “He and his personal bodyguard Porsche were taken from Porsche’s residence about a half and hour ago. Khun Korn has sent both Khun Kinn and his own security teams after him.”
Porsche. Of course it had to do with the new guy. Perhaps he’d gotten himself ‘taken’ too to dispel suspicion. “Who did this?”
“I don’t have that information.” Kim tightened his grip. “Sir,” Bible huffed. “I wasn’t given any more information. You’ll need to ask your father.”
Kim let him go. “How much further?”
“20 minutes, sir,” the driver, a man Kim didn’t recognize, replied immediately. For the first time ever, Kim cursed his desire to live far away from his family.
“Drive faster.”
No one met him at the entrance when they pulled up. Bible hurried him from the car through the doors and then let go of him. A man Kim vaguely recognized as a part of Khun’s usual detail approached him and bowed respectfully. “Khun Kim, Khun Korn has ordered that you are to remain indoors until Khun Kinn’s been retrieved.”
“Where is my father?” Kim demanded.
“He is coordinating with Chan.” Which meant he wouldn’t have time to speak with Kim any time soon.
“Fine. Where’s Khun?”
The bodyguard turned slightly and held a hand out towards the elevators. “He is in his rooms. I was just about to return there. I can escort you-”
Kim brushed past the man and made for the elevators. A moment later, he heard the quick patter of the man’s steps catching up. Kim drummed his fingers on his leg as they waited for the elevator. “Do you know anything?” He tried to demand but he’s almost certain it came out more as a plea. “Uh…”
“Pete,” the man supplied quietly. “And I know that they are beginning the search on foot since they located his phone near the truck.”
Kim whirled on him. “The truck?”
Pete blinked at him. “Yes, sir? They tracked Khun Kinn’s phone to a truck about half an hour outside the city. Chan led a small team to retrieve him and they took out the truck and the guards. Unfortunately, while they were able to visually confirm Khun Kinn and Porsche’s presence in the truck, they were not near the vehicle when it was stopped. So the search is continuing on foot through the forest.” Kim closed his eyes. “...were you not informed?”
“No,” Kim spat. “I knew he’d been taken but nothing else.” He took a deep breath. “So my brother and his newest bodyguard are somewhere out in the wilderness being hunted by who knows who after being kidnapped and in an accident? Is that the situation?”
“Yes, Khun Kim,” Pete confirmed.
“Fantastic,” Kim muttered as the doors slid open. He didn’t wait for Pete to lead the way and marched down the hall and through the doors to his brother’s room. It bounced off the wall and back into Pete’s face but Kim barely registered it. On the couch, Khun was curled into a ball, his blankets wrapped around him, and his body shaking.
“Khun,” Kim said calmly. He shed his jacket and kicked off his shoes. Khun didn’t react in any way. Not even when he dropped his jacket onto the coffee table. “Khun.”
It was like no one was there. Kim sighed quietly and settled next to his brother. This was the second time Kinn had been kidnapped since Khun’s own experience. Khun hadn’t handled it well the last time and it didn’t look like he was going to be any better this time. Kim gently pried Khun’s fingers away from the edge of a blanket and started to unwrap him. When he could actually see his brother he slid closer and pulled the blankets around them both. “I’m here, Khun,” he promised softly.
Several minutes went by before Khun wrapped his bony fingers around Kim’s wrist. “Kim?” His voice was hoarse.
“I’m here,” Kim repeated. Khun’s grip tightened until it was almost painful but Kim said nothing. “I’m not going anywhere.” He wanted to wrap his arms around his brother and hold him tight. Khun had never told him the specifics of what happened when he was kidnapped but Kim really didn’t need to know. He knew what it had done to his brother, to his mind. And no matter how much progress he might make, the idea of the same thing happening to Kinn or to Kim himself would always set him back. And when that happened, Khun didn’t want to be coddled or cared for. He needed to be the big brother.
Since Khun couldn’t go out and look for Kinn in person, Kim had to let his brother take care of him. Slowly, Khun loosened enough to shift their positions and wrap his arms around Kim and hold him tight. “It’s going to be okay,” he promised Kim. “Kinn will be back.”
“Okay.”
Khun rubbed a hand down his back. “Are you hungry? Thirsty?”
“I could use something to drink,” Kim offered. And just like that, Khun was on his feet and bustling around his room. A moment later he held a tonic water out to Kim. Kim hated tonic water but took it with a smile and happily took a sip. “Thank you.”
Khun gave him a trembling smile. “Want to watch a series? There’s this new one…” Kim let him ramble and eventually turn on whatever show had caught his attention most recently. He forced down the rest of the tonic water and the next time Khun asked if he needed anything, he was ready for more.
Every now and then he looked to Pete in question but Pete always shook his head. Last time, Kinn had been found in less than 12 hours. Part of Kim had assumed this time would be similar but the 12 hour mark came and went with no update and no sign of their father. Khun got more frantic every time he looked at the clock and Kim did his best to keep him calm.
Around the 24 hour mark he called for sedatives for Khun. The only time any member of their family had been held over 24 hours was Khun’s own kidnapping. Kim could see his brother’s mind whirring, going over and over all of the worst possible scenarios. Not even the knowledge that Kinn was lost in the woods and not being held captive could calm him; it set him off on the idea that Kinn was injured and dying and no one was there to help him. When a nurse arrived with the sedative, Khun took it eagerly.
Without Khun to look after, Kim tried to focus on his writing, to pick up where he’d left off earlier when he was brought in but the only thing his mind could focus on was Kinn. They’d never been exceptionally close and it had only gotten worse after Khun’s kidnapping. Kinn was pushed into the role of heir and Kim had sprinted the opposite direction. But Kinn was still his brother and he didn’t want to lose him. And selfishly, he wanted to keep running far away from the family business and if anything happened to Kinn, his father would force him back home.
When hour 30 ticked by, the door opened and revealed his father. Kim didn’t bother to stand. “Kinn?”
Korn shook his head. “Nothing yet. We’ve found tracks but we’re not the only ones looking for him.” Kim closed his eyes and let his head flop back onto the couch. “Where’s Tankhun?”
“Asleep. Gave him some sedatives a few hours ago.”
Korn nodded. “How’s he holding up?”
“Badly,” Kim admitted bluntly. “He won’t be okay until Kinn comes home.” What went unsaid was that Khun would likely never be okay again if Kinn didn’t come home but both he and his father knew it.
“You?” Korn asked.
“Fine,” Kim shrugged. “Just…waiting.” His father sat down and Kim knew what was coming. “No,” he cut him off.
“That’s not an option at this point,” Khun Korn stated. His entire demeanor had shifted. No longer was this man his father but the man who controlled Bangkok’s underworld. “If Kinn is not found or if he is but is left unable to resume his duties, then I still need an heir.”
Kim shook his head. “Kinn will be fine. It’s Kinn. He’s always fine, even when he really shouldn’t be.”
“Your brother has failed before,” Korn reminded him.
Kim was so sick of hearing about that. His brother was betrayed and somehow it was his fault? “He’ll be okay,” Kim repeated. “You don’t need me. Hell, you don’t want me.”
Korn glanced at the bedroom door. “We must prepare for if he isn’t. Which means you need to prepare.”
“Father…”
“Come to my office in an hour. Finding Kinn is our priority but there are other things that need doing today and you can start to learn.” He didn’t wait for another objection and stood. “It is time for you to rejoin our family, Kim.” Kim watched helplessly as his father walked out.
“Khun Kinn will be alright.” Kim startled at the new voice only to see Pete still standing in his usual place. “Porsche is with him. He will protect him.”
Kim worked his jaw. “I don’t know Porsche,” he admitted.
“Porsche is very good,” Pete assured him. “And he will protect Khun Kinn no matter what.”
“You trust him?”
“I do,” Pete bowed his head. “He will make sure Khun Kinn returns home…even if he does not himself.”
“Good.”
It’s hour 41 when they finally hear good news. Well, Pete hears it first but Kim can tell from the way his shoulders sag and his face lights up that it’s good.
“Kinn?” Kim cut Khun off in the middle of a tangent and then Pete was the focus of both of their undivided attention.
“He’s okay,” Pete nodded. “Chan just reported back that he has both Khun Kinn and Porsche in his care. They’re returning to the compound as we speak.”
Khun collapsed onto the couch like someone had cut all of the strings holding him together. He started crying, his body shaking from the silent tears. Kim dropped next to him and hugged him. They lay like that for a long time, Khun’s (and maybe Kim’s too) tears slowly drying up, before Pete got their attention. “The car will be here in ten minutes. Chan says he is delivering Khun Kinn directly to medical for minor injuries and dehydration.” Khun tried to get to his feet only to get stuck in his pile of blankets so Kim and Pete have to haul him out but then they are all moving, Khun in the lead as they make for the medical center.
Korn is already there when they arrive. Khun headed straight for him with a big smile. “He’s okay!”
Kim saw his father offer only a tight smile in return and his stomach sank. “He’s okay, right?” He asked.
“He will be.”
They wait in tense silence after that for the remaining six minutes it takes for Chan to pull up outside. It almost feels longer than the 41 hours before that. Khun starts bouncing lightly on his feet when the car pulls up outside but he grips tight when Kim reaches for his hand. They stay where they are as their father meets Chan at the door. The head bodyguard comes in empty handed but holds the door open for two men behind him. One was Porsche, recognizable from the photo Big had given Kim, and the other was Kinn, recognizable only because Kim had known his brother his whole life. Both men had scratches on their arms and Porsche was limping heavily but Kinn’s face was also bloodied and there was some kind of wound in his shoulder. They are both filthy and their stench was palpable across the room.
“Bed,” Korn ordered and a medical bed appeared next to them. Porsche helped Kinn onto the bed carefully. Before Kinn could so much as lay back, Khun had let go of Kim’s hand and was across the room. He flung his arms around Kinn, ignoring their brother’s flinch of pain, and sobbed into his neck. Kinn froze for half a moment before hugging Khun back, his eyes closed.
“I’m fine, Khun,” he promised. The words unstuck something in Kim and he joined his brothers. Khun had most of Kinn wrapped up so Kim slung an arm around his shoulders and pressed a kiss to the top of his head.
“Welcome back.”
Kinn huffed. “How’s the heir job?” He looked up at Kim.
“All yours,” Kim promised earnestly, earning a laugh. It was quickly stifled though when Kinn grimaced and his body tensed. Kim pulled Khun away and they stood next to their father while the medical staff swarmed Kinn.
“He’ll be fine,” Khun said. It was both a statement and a question.
“He’ll be fine,” Korn agreed.
