The basic algorithm used by most search engines to order results places more value on several factors, such as:

- How much they have in common with your site.
- How much they have in common with each other.
- Whether they are current sites or not.
- The age of their content.
There are also some techniques used to "bend" or "game" the algorithm, either accidentally or intentionally. These include:
- *Keyword stuffing — Stuffing your pages full of keywords for the purpose of fooling search engines into thinking you're more relevant to certain keywords than you actually are - and thus should rank higher for those keywords. This is usually done by putting those keywords into places where they don't belong. For example, if you're a company that sells handbags, you probably would not want to put one of your main product lines into an HTML heading called "Sitemap."
SEO is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine's "natural" or un-paid ("organic") search results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine's users; these visitors can then be converted into customers.
The organic search results are usually displayed as a set of block links which enable quick access to web pages relevant to the search query. A web page's ranking in the organic search results is commonly referred to as its PageRank. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search, academic search, news search and industry-specific vertical search engines.

Links from other websites to a client's website; these links are called inbound links. This type of link popularity is also known as incoming links.
