Joel stepped cautiously around a rock, steadying himself with one hand. The boulders were slippery, and it would be far too easy to fall to the treacherous sea below.
“Joel!” a voice called from behind him. He glanced back at Jimmy. “I think there’s someone down there!”
Joel shielded his eyes from the sun reflecting off the shiny rocks, and squinted down at the beach. Sure enough, there was a small form crouched there, at the edge of the water.
“He looks young,” Jimmy commented as he stumbled down after Joel. “Should we go talk to him?”
Joel huffed. He was just annoyed with Jimmy after the long day. “And of course we should. There shouldn’t be any kids out here. He could be lost.”
Jimmy rolled his eyes at Joel's tone, but followed Joel down the precarious cliffside. The air was cold and salty, and the wind pushed Joel’s hair back from his face. He kept looking over at the kid on the beach. What was he doing out here?
Finally, he had both feet securely on the black sand, and walked slowly toward the kid.
“Hello?” Joel called out softly.
The kid whipped around.
Joel drew back with a quick intake of breath. The boy was barely as tall as Joel’s chest, but his arms and legs were lithe and strong. His hair was tousled and lined with sea salt, and his fingers were long and spindly.
But Joel was more focused on his eyes. The eyes were huge black pools, that looked somehow both threatening and awfully endearing at the same time.
A strangled noise came from the boy’s throat as he stumbled backward into the spray.
“Hey, it’s okay!” Jimmy said quickly, holding out a hand. “We’re not going to hurt you.”
“I doubt he can speak English,” Joel said quietly. “This is a selkie, Jimmy. He’s probably never seen a human before.”
“Well, I’m not a human,” Jimmy snapped. Joel ignored him and crouched down to look the boy in the eye.
In the back of his throat, he made a soft crooning sound, similar to that of a dove. The boy looked shocked, then agonizingly hopeful. He echoed the sound and inched closer to Joel.
“Does he speak bird?” Jimmy whispered. “Because I do.”
“Try to talk to him,” Joel said, not taking his eyes off the thin boy. “And for God’s sake, be gentle.”
Jimmy stepped forward and spread his wings, quietly pointing at them while chirping at the boy. The child was watching, his gaze huge and wondering. He reached out hesitantly and brushed a calloused finger over the soft yellow feathers.
Joel and Jimmy stayed there for a long time, until the sun was dipping below the horizon and the stars were beginning to appear. They sat leaning against each other, with the boy sprawled on the sand, playing with Jimmy’s feathers.
“He won’t tell me his name,” Jimmy murmured to Joel. “He just keeps saying ‘sun’.”
