Reducing Data Center Cost with an Air-Side Economizer
At a time when more data centers than ever before are calling into question the necessity of mechanical cooling and whether there exist other, better methods of cooling. Some data centers, like QuadraNet, are implementing air-side economizers, which synchronize outside temperatures with inside data center temperatures. These tools aren’t permanent solutions, since ASHRAE recommended operating ranges are between 18C and 27C (65F and 81F), which means that on a particularly hot day, it may be 90F+ outside, and it would obviously not be beneficial to turn an air-side economizer on. While newer hardware is built to higher standards and is better able to withstand higher temperatures, older hardware can be extremely prone to failure at temperatures above ASHRAE’s recommended operating range. Since a large percentage of data centers built for public use still use some legacy hardware, it seems that mechanical cooling is here to stay, at least for the foreseeable future.
Tumblr media
Description
An air-side economizer brings outside air into a     building and distributes it to the servers. Instead of being re-circulated     and cooled, the exhaust air from the servers is simply directed outside.     If the outside air is particularly cold, the economizer may mix it with     the exhaust air so its temperature and humidity fall within the desired     range for the equipment.
The air-side economizer is integrated into a central     air handling system with ducting for both intake and exhaust; its filters     reduce the amount of particulate matter, or contaminants, that are brought     into the data center.
Because data centers must be cooled 24/7, 365 days per     year, air-side economizers may even make sense in hot climates, where they     can take advantage of cooler evening or winter air temperatures.
Tumblr media
Did you know?
Intel IT conducted a proof-of-concept test that used an     air-side economizer to cool servers with 100% outside air at temperatures     of up to 90°F. Intel estimates that a 500kW facility will save $144,000     annually and that a 10MW facility will save $2.87 million annually. Also,     the company found no significant difference between failure rates using     outside air and an HVAC system.

Ethereum miners make a multi-million dollar bet on delayed updates
Major bitcoin mining companies and mining equipment manufacturers are increasing their investments in ethereum mining despite the imminent second network switch to proof-of-stake (POS).
Public bitcoin miners Hut 8 and Hive are ramping up their capabilities to mine the second largest cryptocurrency by market cap. Meanwhile, mining equipment manufacturers such as Bitmain and Innosilicon are set to launch new Ethereum miners later this year.
This investment may seem strange, given that the Ethereum system is expected to migrate from proof-of-work (POW) to POS in five months, and because POS mining does not require such advanced machines. The increase in demand could be attributed to expectations that migration will be delayed, according to professionals in the sector.
“We were told mining was going to end four years ago and it’s still going,” said Mark D’Aria, CEO of Bitpro, a New York-based consulting firm focused on brokering and managing Ethereum mining hardware. erc20 token development company “It’s always been a wait-and-see thing: things tend to take longer than everyone expects.” While the London fork in early August brings the network one step closer to Ethereum 2.0, significant updates throughout Ethereum’s six-year history have had a history of multiple delays.
For example, the Constantinople upgrade — a key step toward Ethereum 2.0 — was originally scheduled to launch as early as July 2018; however, a bug in its code delayed its deployment until February 2019, causing further delays for the migration.
mining freeze
Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 3554 introduced something known as the “difficulty bomb”, which adds artificial miners to increase the complexity of mining and makes mining operations less profitable. This period has been called the “Ice Age”. Ethereum developers initially introduced this EIP in 2015, but it has been postponed until December 2021. As the price of ether rises, it may be more difficult to transition the network to proof-of-stake, said Ethan Vera, chief operating officer of Seattle-based mining company Luxor.
check out us : erc20 token development
In addition to technical challenges and asset security issues on Ethereum, potential resistance from the Ethereum mining community could be another factor slowing down the migration to POS.
“Something that hasn’t really been appreciated is how much resistance there is going to be to that move to proof-of-stake,” D’Aria said. “Thinking that they’re just going to flip a switch and shut down billions of dollars of miners is crazy, that’s not going to happen.” Institutional actors
The relatively low power consumption compared to bitcoin miners, combined with the small amounts of heat and noise from ethereum mining equipment, makes it possible to mine ETH on graphics processing units (GPUs) at home, Vera said.
More than 90% of ethereum miners are based on GPUs, which is also common hardware used by gamers, D’Aria said. However, cryptocurrency mining heavyweights are moving to break into the industry and make higher profits than mining bitcoin.
The public cryptocurrency mining company Hive Blockchain claimed that it has become the largest public Ethereum miner in the world with 3,383 gigahashes per second (GH/s), which was 1.3% of the total hashrate of the Ethereum network in that time, according to a Hive financial report dated Oct. 15, 2020.
The Vancouver-based company aims to increase its Ethereum mining hashrate to 5,500 GH/s, which would mean a 62.5% increase compared to that level by the end of this year. Hive in February acquired a 50-megawatt (MW) data center in Canada from One, a provider of GPU data center colocation services.
Another public cryptocurrency mining company, Hut 8, bought specialized Ethereum mining equipment for $30 million from GPU manufacturer Nvidia in May. The company said all of that is expected to be delivered and installed at its Alberta facility by the end of August. It plans to achieve a hashrate of 1,600 GH/s with a power usage of 4MW. drive immediate short-term and long-term revenue growth goals in fiscal 2021, “ the company said .
Unlike bitcoin mining companies like Marathon and Riot, companies like Hut 8 have a mandate to use stranded or underutilized energy and turn it into computing power and reward, according to Vera. erc20 token creator are looking at a bigger picture of how they can capitalize on their computing power,” Vera said, adding: “Crypto is a vertical of the many who would persecute.
faster payments
More powerful ethereum miners are coming onto the market, shortening the payback period on those operations and increasing returns. Specialized Ethereum miners, also called application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), are designed by miner manufacturers like Bitmain specifically for mining, while most GPU mining gear is made by reusing graphics cards originally used for gaming.
Nvidia introduced its first ethereum mining equipment in early 2021, while Bitmain and Innosilicon plan to deliver their latest ethereum mining equipment later this year.
Mining equipment manufacturer iPollo has achieved more than $200 million in pre-order revenue for its latest Ethereum ASIC model, which is due to ship in Q4 2021, said Paul Yao, vice president of global business development at the company. His goal is to increase its output when the company reaches higher capacity and can manufacture year-round equipment in 2022, according to Yao.
The Singapore-based company will set up an office in the United States next year and shift its focus from the Chinese to the North American market. “We are seeing growing demand in that area and in some of the Asian markets.

Taking Earthquake Protection to the Next Level in Data Centers
Tumblr media
  Via datacenterfrontier.com
The Digital Realty 365 Main data center in San Francisco is one of the few data centers in the U.S. with a base isolation system for earthquake protection. (Photo: Digital Realty)
The topic is especially relevant to data center operators on the West Coast, where three major data center markets – Silicon Valley, Los Angeles and Seattle – have a history of destructive earthquakes. Despite the mission-critical industry’s focus on risk, building-level earthquake protection systems are rare in the United States.
Those questions are at the heart of a new project in Silicon Valley, where RagingWire/NTT is creating a base isolation system to provide an extra layer of earthquake protection for its first data center in Santa Clara. The decision is influenced by NTT’s experience in Japan, where base isolation is commonly used in high-rise buildings in urban areas.
There are about 9,000 buildings in Japan that use the advanced earthquake systems. But the story is very different in the U.S., where only about 175 buildings are equipped with base isolation, a discrepancy explored in a recent story by The New York Times. They include the new Apple headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. along with Los Angeles City Hall.
In nearly 20 years covering the data center industry, I’ve encountered only one data center in the United States with a base isolation system – the 365 Main facility in San Francisco. To get a fuller understanding of earthquake defense in data centers, we’ll review system installed at 365 Main, and the plans for the RagingWire/NTT facility. But first, some background on trends in earthquake protection.
Although Japan mandates strong earthquake defenses, governments in the U.S. leave the choice to real estate developers. America has long maintained stronger building codes than many other countries, and had fewer seismic catastrophes in recent years. As a result, earthquake disasters can be viewed as rare events, with a different risk frequency profile than other disasters. These systems involve additional cost, and most builders opt not to invest additional funds to add base isolation systems, despite the awareness of the potential that a “Big One” is a possibility.
“We seem intent on creating buildings with a minimal level of protection,” said Bob Woolley, Senior VP of Operations for RagingWire/NTT Data Centers. “People often don’t really understand the risk from earthquakes. They have a false sense of security. In the world we live in, people never take the risk until something happens.”
Woolley said that California building codes are designed so that buildings will remain standing, but can move quite a bit during an earthquake. That’s an issue for a building filled with racks of servers and power equipment instead of offices.
“Our intent is to create a building that not only keeps people safe, but keeps the equipment safe inside it,” said Woolley. “You have to create space for the building to move.”
U.S. data center companies that are concerned about earthquake risk typically adopt rack-level isolation units, which are installed under racks and cabinets and employ a ball-and-cone system to allow the equipment to gently roll back and forth during an earthquake. Worksafe Technologies has been a leading vendor of these systems.
Providing earthquake protection at the building level involves similar concepts, but a lot more engineering. Let’s take a look at base isolation systems and how they work.
San Francisco is home to a vibrant tech community, but experienced widespread devastation from a 1906 quake and sustained another big hit in the 1989 Loma Prieta (“World Series”) earthquake.
In 2000, colocation provider AboveNet acquired a former tank factory at 365 Main in San Francisco. The structure is built atop a chunk of bedrock on Rincon Point that supports the pillars of the Bay Bridge (which runs alongside the site) and outside the liquefaction zones were earth is likely to be displaced by an earthquake. We recently toured the building with the team from Digital Realty, the current owner and landlord.

If investors at some of the biggest technology companies are right, the next big restaurant chain could have no kitchens of its own.
These venture capitalists think the same forces that have transformed transportation, media, retail and logistics will also work their way through prepared food businesses.
The Battle Is For The Customer Interface
Investors are pouring millions into the creation of a network of shared kitchens, storage facilities, and pickup counters that established chains and new food entrepreneurs can access to cut down on overhead and quickly spin up new concepts in fast food and casual dining.
Powering all of this is a food delivery market that could grow from $35 billion to a $365 billion industry by 2030, according to a report from UBS’s research group, the “Evidence Lab”.
“We’ve had conversations with the biggest and fastest growing restaurant brands in the country and even some of the casual brands,” said Jim Collins, a serial entrepreneur, restauranteur, and the chief executive of the food-service startup, Kitchen United. “In every board room for every major restaurant brand in the country… the number one conversation surrounds the topic of how are we going to address [off-premise diners].”
Collins’ company just raised $10 million in a funding round led by GV, the investment arm of Google parent company, Alphabet. But Alphabet’s investment team is far from the only group investing in the restaurant infrastructure as a service business.
Perhaps the best capitalized company focusing on distributed kitchens is CloudKitchens, one of two subsidiaries owned by the holding company City Storage Solutions.
Cloud Kitchens and its sister company Cloud Retail are the two arms of the new venture from Uber co-founder and former chief executive, Travis Kalanick, which was formed with a $150 million investment.
Travis Kalanick is already back running a company with a $150M investment
As we reported at the time, Travis announced that he would be starting a new fund with the riches he made from Uber shares sold in its most recent major secondary round. Kalanick said his 10100, or “ten one hundred”, fund would be geared toward “large-scale job creation,” with investments in real estate, e-commerce, and “emerging innovation in India and China.”
If anyone is aware of the massive market potential for leveraging on-demand services, it’s Kalanick. Especially since he was one of the architects of the infrastructure that has made it possible.
Other deep pocketed companies have also stepped into the fray. Late last year Acre Venture Partners, the investment arm formed by The Campbell Soup Co., participated in a $13 million investment for Pilotworks, another distributed kitchen operator based in Brooklyn.
Meanwhile, Kitchen United has been busy putting together a deep bench of executive talent culled from some of the largest and most successful American fast food restaurant chains.
Former Taco Bell Chief Development Officer, Meredith Sandland, joined the company earlier this year as its chief operating officer, while former McDonald’s executive Atul Sood, who oversaw the burger giant’s relationship with online delivery services, has come aboard as Kitchen United’s Chief Business Officer.
The millions of dollars spicing up this new business model investors are serving up could be considered the second iteration of a food startup wave.
Food startup Maple shuts down operations in New York to join Deliveroo
An earlier generation of prepared food startups crashed and burned while trying to spin up just this type of vision with investments in their own infrastructure. New York celebrity chef David Chang, the owner and creator of the city’s famous Momofuku restaurants (and Milk Bar, and Ma Peche), was an investor in Maple, a new delivery-only food startup that raised $25 million before it was shut down and its technology was absorbed into the European, delivery service, Deliveroo.
Ando, which Chang founded, was another attempt at creating a business with a single storefront for takeout and a massive reliance on delivery services to do the heavy lifting of entering new neighborhoods and markets. That company wound up getting acquired by UberEats after raising $7 million in venture funding.
Uber Eats acquires Ando, the food delivery startup from David Chang that makes its own food
Those losses are slight compared to the woes of investors in companies like Munchery, ($125.4 million) Sprig, ($56.7 million) and SpoonRocket ($13 million). Sprig and Spoonrocket are now defunct, and Munchery had to pull back from markets in Los Angeles, New York, and Seattle as it fights for survival. The company also reportedly was looking at recapitalizing earlier in the year at a greatly reduced valuation.
On-demand food startup Sprig is shutting down today
What gives companies like Kitchen United, Pilotworks and Cloud Kitchens hope is that they’re not required to actually create the next big successful concept in fast food or casual dining. They just have to enable it.
Kitchen United just opened a 12,000 square foot facility in Pasadena for just that purpose — and has plans to open more locations in West Los Angeles; Jersey City, N.J.; Atlanta; Columbus, Ohio; Phoenix; Seattle and Denver. Its competitor, Pilotworks, already has operations in Brooklyn, Chicago, Dallas, and Providence, R.I.
While the two companies have similar visions, they’re currently pursuing different initial customers. Pilotworks has pitched itself as a recipe for success for new food entrepreneurs. Kitchen United, by comparison is giving successful local, regional, and national brands a way to expand their footprint without investing in real estate.
“One of the directions that the company was thinking of going was toward the restaurant industry and the second was in the food service entrepreneurial sector,” said Collins. “Would it be a company that served restaurants with their expansions? Now, we’re in deep discussions with all kinds of restaurants.”
Smaller national fast food chains like Chick-Fil-A or Shake Shack, or fast casual chains like Dennys and Shoney’s could be customers, said Collins. So could local companies that are trying to expand their regional footprint. Los Angeles’ famous Canter’s Deli is a Kitchen United customer (and an early adopter of a number of new restaurant innovations) and so is The Lost Cuban Kitchen, an Iowa-based Cuban restaurant that’s expanding to Los Angeles.
Canters restaurant royalty raises $9.5 million for Ordermark, a takeout order management service
Kitchen United is looking to create kitchen centers that can house between 10-20 restaurants in converted warehouses, big box retail and light industrial locations.
Using demographic data and “demand mapping” for specific cuisines, Kitchen United said that it can provide optimal locations and site the right restaurant to meet consumer demand. The company is also pitching labor management, menu management and delivery tools to help streamline the process of getting a new location up and running.
“In all of the facilities, all of the restaurants have their own four-walled space,” says Collins. “There’s shared infrastructure outside of that.”
Some of that infrastructure is taking food deliveries and an ability to serve as a central hub for local supplier, according to Collins. “One of the things that we’re going to be launching relatively soon here in Pasadena, is actually in-service days where local supplier and purveyors can come in and meet with seven restaurants at once.”
It’s also possible that restaurants in the Kitchen United spaces could take advantage of restaurant technologies being developed by one of the startup’s sister companies through Cali Group, a holding company for a number of different e-sports, retail, and food technology startups.
The Pasadena-based kitchen company was founded by Harry Tsao, an investor in food technology (and a part owner of the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Football Club) through his fund Avista Investments; and John Miller, a serial entrepreneur who founded the Cali Group.
In fact, Kitchen United operates as a Cali Group portfolio company alongside Miso Robotics, the developer of the burger flipping robot, Flippy; Caliburger, an In-n-Out clone first developed by Miller in Shanghai and brought back to the U.S.; and FunWall, a display technology for online gaming in retail settings.
Flippy, the robot hamburger chef, goes to work
“Kitchen United’s data-driven approach to flexible kitchen spaces unlocks critical value for national, regional, and local restaurant chains looking to expand into new markets,” said Adam Ghobarah, general partner at GV, and a new director on the Kitchen United board. “The founding team’s experience in scaling — in addition to diverse exposure to national chains, regional brands, regional franchises, and small upstart eateries — puts Kitchen United in a strong position to accelerate food innovation.”
GV’s Ghobarah actually sees the investment of a piece with other bets that Alphabet’s venture capital arm has made around the food industry.
The firm is a backer of the fully automated hamburger preparation company, Creator, which has raised roughly $28 million to develop its hamburger making robot (if Securities and Exchange Commission filings can be believed). And it has backed the containerized farming startup, Bowery Farming, with a $20 million investment.
Taste test: Burger robot startup Creator opens first restaurant
Ghobarah sees an entirely new food distribution ecosystem built up around facilities where Bowery’s farms are colocated with Kitchen United’s restaurants to reduce logistical hurdles and create new hubs.
“As urban farming like Bowery scales up… that becomes more and more realistic,” Ghobarah said. “The other thing that really stands out when you have flexible locations … all of the thousands of people who want to own a restaurant now have access. It’s not really all regional chains and national chains… With a satellite location like this… [a restaurant]… can break even at one third of the order volume.”
