Happy Valentine’s Day @dinnfameron! I had so much fun writing this fic for you. I hope you enjoy it ❤
David/Patrick || Rated T || 3,352 words
Here’s the thing: Patrick has been doing magic since he was eight years old and it’s never backfired. His magic has always been very straightforward: he thinks hard about what he wants to happen and then it either happens or it doesn’t. There’s no in between.
So, when they walk into their hotel room and David makes a face at the absurdly tiny beds and asks Patrick if there’s anything he can do about it, Patrick doesn’t hesitate.
Or, David and Patrick attend an overnight conference and Patrick’s magic starts to go haywire.
(a.k.a. the magical only one bed fic)

Of Secrets and (Potentially) Rabid Goats
For my SC Secret Valentine, @maryp50 - I hope you enjoy! <3
***
“What happened to you?” David raised a questioning eyebrow as he watched Patrick set the cooler down on the floor of the stock room, his eyes glued to the torn fabric at the back of Patrick’s shoulder. “Why’s your shirt torn?”
“Vincent Van Goat happened to me,” Patrick said, chuckling softly as he shook his head. “I swear to god, that goat is in love with me.”
“One of Heather’s goats?”
“Who else’s goat would it be?” Patrick deadpanned, raising one of his own barely-there eyebrows back at David. “You know where I went today; in fact, I seem to recall you being very excited about this particular vendor run. Something about being out of brie…?”
“So the goat… attacked you?” David asked incredulously, taking a step closer as he reached out to touch Patrick’s shoulder, where he could now see there was a smear of blood on Patrick’s white undershirt.
“Well, I’m not sure I’d quite call it ‘attacking.’ More like… misguided affection?”
“Um, except that you’re bleeding, and I know my past self was probably not the best person to ask about what constitutes affection, but--”
“Wait, what?” Patrick cut David off as he craned his neck in an attempt to peer at his shoulder, his fingers grabbing at the jagged edge of the material. “How bad is it?”
“I don’t know! How did you not notice you were bleeding? For all we know, you could have rabies now!”
“Okay, calm down--”
“Don’t tell me to calm down when you’re the one who got bitten by a rabid goat!”
“He wasn’t rabid, David.”
“And how do you know that? Or did I somehow miss you getting your veterinary degree?”
“Pretty sure I would have noticed if he was foaming at the mouth. Even with my business degree.”
“Well you sure didn’t notice you were bleeding, so I’m not sure I trust your judgment at the moment!” David could hear his voice rising in pitch as his anxiety rose, though he wasn’t sure what was agitating him more -- the fact that Patrick got bitten by a goat or that he didn’t seem to be concerned about it at all. And David didn’t want to be anxious, but Patrick was winding him up, and he was winding Patrick up, and Patrick, well, he…
“David,” Patrick said, keeping his voice even as he turned and laid his hands on top of David’s shoulders, stopping his mental spiral right in its tracks. “I don’t have rabies. Also, I’m sure Heather’s goats are up to date on their vaccinations. I’ll put some antiseptic on it, and it’ll be fine.”
“No,” David countered, ducking out of Patrick’s grasp before leading him over to the couch they’d recently added to the stock room. “You’re going to sit right here, and I’m going to get the first aid kit, and we’re going to clean it and bandage it properly, so your arm doesn’t fall off!” First aid certainly hadn’t been what David had in mind when he suggested they might like a more comfortable place to sit back there, but he couldn’t deny it was handy now, particularly with his brain conjuring up worst-case scenarios of infected wounds and his maybe-kinda-sorta boyfriend possibly having rabies.
“My arm isn’t going to fall off, David,” Patrick protested, rolling his eyes as David practically pushed him down onto the cushions. “There’s really no need for any of this; I’m fine. I promise.”
“We’ll see about that.” David turned to open the desk drawer where they kept the first aid kit as Patrick let out a frustrated sigh behind him.
“David, I’m fine. Really.”
“Good, then this should be quick and painless.” David flipped open the lid of the kit as he walked the few steps back to the couch, pulling out packets of gauze and antibiotic ointment until he finally uncovered the antiseptic wipes. “Okay, take your shirt off.”
“Somehow I pictured the first time this happened being a lot sexier.”
“Shirt. Off.” David was using his no-nonsense voice, if for no other reason than because sounding marginally annoyed with Patrick was better than David’s default in situations like this -- anxious mess. He stared at Patrick with raised eyebrows, waiting, while Patrick gazed right back, amusement dancing in his warm brown eyes.
“Sir, yes sir.” Patrick gave a mock salute before starting to unbutton what was left of his shirt, slipping it off of his shoulders before grabbing the hem of his undershirt and pulling it upward and off, revealing something David certainly hadn’t expected to see on his buttoned-up business partner.
The ink stood out against the pale skin of Patrick’s left shoulder blade -- a bird in flight, done mostly in shades of gray, with a bright red underbelly. The barely audible, “Whoa,” was out of David’s mouth before he could stop it as he blinked several times, just to make sure he wasn’t hallucinating.
“What?” Patrick’s voice jolted him back to the present, and he glanced up to see Patrick once again craning his neck to look over his shoulder. “Is it bad?”
“What?” David echoed, still lost in his thoughts for a split second before he managed to self-correct -- mostly. “No, it’s… You have a tattoo.”
With Patrick’s shirt off, David could clearly see the flush as it crept over Patrick’s neck before making its way to his ears and cheeks. “Um… yeah,” he said, sounding bashful, almost embarrassed. “More than one, actually.”
Seemingly of their own volition, David’s fingers reached out to gently trace the wings of the bird.
“It’s a sparrow,” Patrick supplied, his voice suddenly soft, bordering on wistful. “It symbolizes freedom. I got that one right after I moved to Schitt’s Creek.”
Slowly, David’s fingers found their way to Patrick’s upper arm and the black ink that stretched over the ball of Patrick’s shoulder -- a tree with roots almost as deep as its branches were tall, positioned almost as if the sparrow had flown out from it.
“Tree of life,” Patrick said, as if he could somehow read David’s mind… answer the questions David couldn’t even manage to wrap his head around, much less ask. But his voice was barely above a whisper. Unsure. Hesitant. “Balance and growth… two things I knew I needed, but didn’t know how to get.” He huffed a breathy laugh. “Somehow getting the ink didn’t quite manifest it either. There’s more than just that, though.”
Patrick lifted his arm, rotating it outward to expose the ink on the inside of his bicep, where, “Love never fails,” was written in cursive script.
“That’s a verse from my parents’ wedding,” he said, his voice getting gravelly now. “Because I knew their relationship was what love was supposed to look like. Got that one after a breakup. Actually got most of them that way. Not sure what that says about me, but…”
“How did I not know you had tattoos?”
“Well, it hasn’t exactly come up…” Patrick let his voice trail off as he paused to clear his throat. “And you didn’t ask.”
“Are there more?”
Patrick nodded as he turned slightly to face David and tilted his gaze downward toward his right pectoral muscle, where there was a small triangle with one incomplete side. “That was the first one,” he said. “Openness to change. Got it right after I turned 18. Thought mom was gonna kill me.” Then, he extended his right arm, rotating it so that a line of what appeared to be someone’s handwriting became visible on the inside of his arm, just high enough so that his rolled-up shirt sleeves kept it covered. “It says, ‘Always follow your heart.’ My grandfather wrote it in my high school graduation card. I got it there so I could make sure I could see it… so I’d remember.”
David hummed, the ghost of a smile tugging at his lips at the sentiment. “I like that,” he breathed, the new information he’d just gleaned about his straight-laced business partner turned possible love interest still throwing him slightly off-balance.
Patrick met David’s gaze and returned his smile. “I did too.”
The way Patrick’s eyes seemed to be searching David’s made him feel like perhaps there was something more than Patrick wasn’t saying, but pushing and prying had never worked out well for David when it came to potential romance, so he kept his mouth shut.
“So, um… am I still bleeding?” Patrick asked, dipping his head low as he scratched nervously at the back of his neck.
“Oh!” David shook his head in a desperate effort to unscramble his brain, though with all of Patrick’s ink still on display, that was a bit of a tall order. He did manage, however, to get Patrick turned so he could get a good look at his right shoulder. “Looks like he mostly just got your shirt, I think. There’s a couple of scrapes, but nothing major.”
David tore open one of the antiseptic wipes and ran it gently over Patrick’s skin, wincing himself when he heard Patrick inhale a sharp breath through his teeth at the first contact.
“Sorry,” David whispered, trying to be as quick as possible as he tossed the wipe into the wastebasket before squeezing some ointment over the wound. He covered it with a bandage and gave it a gentle, somewhat awkward pat, his mind still reeling despite his best efforts to act casual. “There. Good as new.”
“Thanks,” Patrick said, reaching for his undershirt and tugging it back over his head before getting up and grabbing the spare button-up he kept on a hanger above the desk. “Just in case,” he’d said when David had asked him why he appeared to be hanging his dry cleaning up in the back room of their store. And as David watched Patrick pull the shirt over his shoulders and fumble with the buttons, he couldn’t help but feel like he was watching Patrick conceal an entire side of himself -- one that it seemed like very few people knew about. But one that David couldn’t wait to get to know even better.

Thank you to @blackandwhiteandrose for letting me borrow Vincent Van Goat and for helping my clueless self out with choosing Patrick's ink, and for being a wonderful friend. And thank you to my other wonderful friend A for the beta! <3
