Soccer won't pull his grades down.

This was something Jeongin believed down to the very core of his heart. Indulging in one sport doesn't sound like it poses any harm in getting that important piece of paper on graduation day. That way, he could still have something to enjoy in high school while also maintaining the standards being asked in this society to survive.

Well seeing the predicament he's in right now, he really needs to rethink that statement.

Sitting across from him in the bustling area of the faculty office was his history teacher, Mrs. Park. And seeming to make the situation tenser than it should be is the deep frown etched across her face. 

Just a bit to the right of his view lies a thin sheet of paper. And it's definitely not his diploma. He almost believes the inanimate object was mocking him as his eyes zero on the different numbers printed on it. Those were his scores. His low scores. That set sirens off in his head instantly. 

Oh my god, he's failing history.

He could already hear the nagging voice of his mother, along with the twitching eye of his father at the dinner table. What could be worse? Oh right. Hwang Hyunjin finding out he might win their yearly academic rivalry for the first time since starting high school. Now that was something he'd want to prevent; this one's pride was just too high to admit defeat to Hwang of all people.

Suddenly the ground seemed a lot more interesting than the teacher's face. It was one thing to have a failing score, it was another thing to have two failing scores, but 8 in a row? He didn't blame her for calling him here. 

Ignorance really is bliss, Jeongin grimaces. Would it be reasonable if he compared this moment to a kid realising Santa Claus isn't real? Cause it sure felt that way right now. Adding the fact that the timing couldn't be better as he was called while practising a few shoots on the soccer field earlier. It's a bit too comical for his liking.

"Jeongin, I think we both know why you're here right?" Mrs. Park's monotone voice rang through his head. Despite the raging sea of thoughts in his head, he could only nod in return.

To be fair, what was he supposed to say exactly? That he's sorry history class just wasn't interesting enough to him for the information to stay in his head? Surely not a strong excuse with the fact that he could've easily just studied instead. He shoots a quick glare towards the paper as if expecting it to retort back.

Who is he kidding? The most a piece of paper could do to him would be some measly paper cut. Unless it magically finds a way to get him in his sleep— Wait no, that's just a haunted paper. 

Hold on, it's not actually haunted right?

Giving it one last skeptical glance, he focuses back on the problem at hand. Jeongin's sure he couldn't be the only one failing Mrs. Park's history class; not everyone is proficient in history. It's important, yes, but too much information to retain. Personally, if you asked him what happened yesterday he'd probably tell you he doesn't remember. And that's because he really doesn't. It's not short-term memory loss though, he swears.

But saying the same thing about history won't look good. It should be respected and remembered. We need to appreciate the events that affected our current lives. So Jeongin concludes that it must be the class itself.

Would blaming it on Mrs. Park's emotionless one-tone teaching voice be valid?

Jeongin jumps a bit when he hears a sigh. Well, there goes his plan for stalling. Looking back up to meet the woman's eyes sheepishly, he tries to compose himself.

Yeah, no blaming Mrs. Park today. That would be rude and Mr. Class President Bang Chan would never let him live that down.

"Truthfully, I admit that I don't know you well enough to understand what and why this is happening, Jeongin." She gestures towards his scores. "But as your teacher, I at least have to do something about this."

Jeongin stays silent, still not sure about the situation. Did he have to take extra classes? God forbid he had to attend a summer class. He's not too sure sacrificing time away from school and studying is something he could do. Especially when he's supposed to be graduating high school next semester! 

Mrs. Park reaches over for the paper and hands it to Jeongin with a hum. The latter sags his shoulders in embarrassment. Mrs. Park gives him a short smile.

"Are you willing to get tutored?"
