CEDAR GLEN, Calif. (AP) — A 27-year-old man killed by California sheriff’s deputies over the weekend after he fatally shot a store owner had ripped down an LGBTQ+ Pride flag outside the business and shouted homophobic slurs at the woman, authorities said Monday.

When deputies confronted Travis Ikeguchi on foot about a mile from the store Friday night, he opened fire on them, striking multiple squad cars, San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus told reporters. Deputies returned fire and shot Ikeguchi, who died at the scene, Dicus said. No deputies were hurt.

Laura Ann Carleton was pronounced dead at Mag.Pi, the store she owned and operated in Cedar Glen. The small community in the San Bernadino Mountains is roughly 60 miles (96 kilometers) east of downtown Los Angeles.

“Investigators determined that prior to the shooting the suspect tore down a Pride, or rainbow, flag that was hanging in front of the store and yelled many homophobic slurs toward Carleton,” Dicus said during Monday’s media briefing.

Ikeguchi, who lived in Cedar Glen, frequently posted hate-filled content on social media, sheriff’s officials said.

The day before the shooting, Ikeguchi’s family had reported him missing to the sheriff’s department, officials said.

Several witnesses reported Carleton’s shooting and followed Ikeguchi while he ran away from the store, the sheriff said. The semiautomatic handgun used by Ikeguchi was not registered to him, and he did not have a license to carry a concealed weapon, according to officials.

Dicus said the investigation into Carleton’s killing was ongoing. The district attorney’s office will investigate the shooting of the suspect, as is standard practice with all lethal encounters involving law enforcement.

Carleton, who preferred to be called “Lauri,” is survived by her husband and nine children in a blended family.

An LGBTQ group in nearby Lake Arrowhead said Carleton didn’t identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. But she spent time helping and advocating for everyone, and she was defending her Pride flags placed in front of her shop on the night of the shooting, the group said.

There was an outpouring of support on social media over the weekend, with commenters expressing shock and sadness on the store’s accounts. Many included rainbow flag emojis.

The advocacy group Equality California said in a statement Monday that over the past year, it has recorded “a sharp increase in anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric being expressed by far right extremists and hate groups — rhetoric which has resulted in physical intimidation, harassment, and acts of violence.”

Law enforcement agencies in several states have investigated the destruction of rainbow Pride flags as potential hate crimes in recent years.

Most of us in the 1980s had a crush on Julian Sands. I know I did. He was very eye catching, had that great accent, and he always chose such interesting movies to be a part of. (Probably my favorite of the bunch is Gothic.)

But now hearing he is lost and presumed dead on Mount Baldy...

From Wikipedia: On 13 January 2023, Sands, a dedicated mountaineer, went missing while hiking in Mount Baldy, California, in the San Gabriel Mountains northeast of Los Angeles. As of 23 January 2023 he has not been located, and police were investigating his whereabouts. The investigation was hindered by severe storms that occurred shortly after Sands went missing. His car was located on 18 January. On 19 January, it was reported that Sands' three adult children joined the ground search for their father, with Sands' son Henry retracing the route his father is believed to have taken, along with an experienced climber. According to reports, Sands' cell phone was last tracked from a ping on 15 January, with no further pings, suggesting it had run out of power. Around the time of his disappearance, Sands was believed to be traversing the Baldy Bowl Trail "which climbs 3,900 feet (1,200 m) over 4.5 miles (7.2 km) to the highest summit in the San Gabriel Mountains". Reports state there was "evidence of avalanches" in the region. A representative of the San Bernadino County Sheriff’s Department confirmed: "The air search is being resumed, but we have not been able to resume a ground search yet due to icy conditions and a threat of avalanches." The Sands family put out a statement on the 11th day since Julian Sands went missing praising “the heroic search teams” and their efforts “on the ground and in the air to bring Julian home.”

It used to be I would look at that mountain and think of Leonard Cohen who lived as a monk at the Mt. Baldy Zen Center for five years, and all the monks who still live there.

But now every time I see the mountain I think of him. To put that into perspective, the base of the mountain is about a 15 minute drive from me. I see it every day.

I've hiked up there with my kids, I know what the terrain is like, and all I can think is he slipped and fell, or there was a rock slide or avalanche or something. A part of me hopes his body is never recovered, so that he will always be on my mountain and the mystery of what happened to him will live on.

Or perhaps he is still alive, somewhere?

Hello! I saw your 9-1-1verse Locations post (thank you so much) and I was wondering something. Would there be a Station 117 and a Station 119 somewhere near the Station 118? Or do numbered stations work differently in the US? I'm sorry if this is a silly question. But thank you anyway!

Hi! Not a silly question at all... it's really not a very simple concept because it truly depends.

If I am not mistaken, each jurisdiction (region, territory, state, county, etc.) has a way of doing them. I believe the LAFD number them as the stations are built and that methodology covers a couple of counties: LA, Orange, and San Bernadino (Ventura may be in there, too)

So you could have Station 118 in LA and Station 119 in Orange County.

Also, on the show, they make it as simple for viewers as possible by just referencing it all under 118, when in actuality, the Firehouse is Station 118 and the main engine would follow that. But the equipment engine could be a different number, as well as the ambulance.

From all my research, there's not really a set rule across all. If anyone has any further insight, please share!

Man to serve 28 years for hate crime in tire shop slaying

Anthony Paz Torres pleaded guilty to federal charges in 2015 anti-Muslim attack

A Dallas man serving time for murder was sentenced to 37 years in prison Wednesday, months after pleading guilty to federal hate crime charges in a 2015 racism-fueled mass shooting at a Muslim-owned car repair and tire shop.

Anthony Paz Torres, 39, pleaded guilty Sept. 14 to five counts of hate crime charges in the fatal shooting at Omar’s Wheels and Tires, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Texas.

He was sentenced to the maximum penalty.

On Christmas Eve 2015, Torres shot multiple people, killing one, at Omar’s Wheels and Tires, a Muslim-owned business in Pleasant Grove.

Authorities said Torres was motivated by his desire to avenge attacks by Islamic extremists in Garland and San Bernadino, Calif.

In 2018, a Dallas County jury convicted Torres of murder and sentenced him to 35 years.

A spokesperson for the U.S. attorney’s office said the sentences will run concurrently and account for time served in state custody.

Because Torres has spent 98 months in state custody, he will be transferred to federal prison with a sentence of 346 months, or roughly 28 years.

Federal authorities said Torres made anti-Muslim comments in a visit to the shop a few days prior to the shooting and that he said he would return.

Prosecutors wrote in the news release that Torres returned on Christmas Eve and asked customers if they were Muslim.

After employees escorted Torres back to his car, he fired shots in the direction of multiple employees and customers.

He later admitted he killed one person and attempted to kill four other people because he believed they were Muslim.

Enrique Garcia Mendoza, 25, was killed in the shooting, and three others were injured. Mendoza was a bystander, and Torres also tried to run someone over with a car, authorities said.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said in the release that “as this sentence makes clear, hate crimes fueled by Islamophobia or bias of any kind, will be met with the full force of the Justice Department.”

“No person in this country should have to live in fear because of who they are, what they look like, or how they pray,” he said.

FBI Director Christopher Wray said in a statement that the shooting “is an abhorrent example of how deadly Islamophobia can be in our own country and the severe consequences that wait for anyone who commits acts of hateful violence.”

Leigha Simonton, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, wrote in her statement “no one should have to live in fear because of the way they worship.”

The FBI Dallas field office, Dallas police and the Dallas county district attorney’s office investigated the case.

Mustafaa Carroll, executive director of the Dallas-Fort Worth chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said the organization welcomes the sentencing.

“We pray that God grants the victim who lost his life entry into paradise, and we pray that he grants the victims’ families solace and strength,” Carroll wrote in a statement.

Former child actor Evan Ellingson has died, according to multiple reports. He was 35.

TMZ first reported the news that Ellingson was found dead in a bedroom at his home on Sunday, citing confirmation from the San Bernadino County Sheriff's Department's coroner's office. People reported that an autopsy was scheduled for Monday morning as a cause of death had yet to be determined.

Ellingson was best known for appearing opposite Cameron Diaz as Jesse Fitzgerald in the 2009 film, My Sister's Keeper. He also had a recurring role in CSI: Miami as the son of David Caruso's character, acting in 18 episodes between 2007 and 2010.

Prior to his death, Ellingson appeared to have taken a step back from Hollywood. His final on-screen credit is from CSI: Miami in 2010.

According to Page Six, Ellingson is survived by a daughter, Brooklynn, who was born in 2008.

Kibitzing the motion picture marriage market is apparently the favorite indoor sport of t those who take film players seriously enough to write letters to and about them. Several hundred during the past month have urged Mae to flee altar-ward with the virile Gable, and vice versa….

Fans are often ignorant of actors’ currently marital ties or blithely disregard them.

William Powell’s followers apparently won’t rest until he marries Jean Harlow, Mary Brian, Elizabeth Allan, Madge Evans, Steffi Duna, Joan Blondell, Tallulah Bankhead, or his ex-wife, Carole Lombard.

Getting back to Miss Lombard, her stock since “My Man Godfrey” has shot practically to the top of the ladder, since “Godfrey” has broken all existing box office records in Los Angeles and is starting out to repeat same in New York.

Paramount has been trying to borrow Gable to team him in a picture with Carole and MGM has been trying to borrow Carole for the same purpose. These efforts having failed, both studios made the best of the situation by allowing a third studio, Universal, to use the two stars together in My Man Godfrey. (Note: Confused writer??)

Another stunt is to cast divorced couples together and to hint about possible reconciliations. This was done with William Powell and Carole Lombard and with Margaret Sullavan and Henry Fonda. No such reconciliations have, however, developed.
