Favorite 15
I was tagged by @sal-si-puedes to list my 15 favorite songs. These are in no particular order.
1. Don’t Worry Baby | The Beach Boys - When you’re having a rough time of life, somehow there’s something terribly soothing about hearing don’t worry baby...everything will turn out alright over and over in multi part harmony.
2. Bridge Over Troubled Water | Simon & Garfunkel - Like you, Aqua, this has been a favorite since I first heard it, although my first experience with it was on a mix tape my sister’s boyfriend Ryan made her. (She did not marry Ryan, though I was married to that mix tape for many years, until it got so worn out it stopped playing. It was called, appropriately enough, Ryan’s Mix. He was not particularly creative, though he did have excellent taste in singers and songwriters.)
3. Picture in a Frame | Tom Waits -  Simple, raspy, honest, loving.
4. Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? | The Shirelles, Sweet Talk Radio - I love both versions, one a little more plaintive, the other more resolute. Like two sides of a woman, two sides of the same pain and heartbreak. I have loved this song - though I’m not sure I understood it - since hearing it as a small girl.
5. Don’t Stop Me Now | Queen - If there’s a song that makes me feel as if I can do anything, it’s this one.
6. In Your Eyes | Peter Gabriel - in your eyes I see the doorway of a thousand churches. Like, honestly Peter Gabriel.
7. Come As You Are | Nirvana (Unplugged in New York) - They found Kurt Cobain’s body the day before my 13th birthday, and I cried for hours when I found out. I imagine if I could have given voice to the pain that was just starting to come forth as a preteen, it would have sounded a lot like Kurt - somehow inhuman and achingly human at the same time.
8. Orange Colored Sky | Nat King Cole - My quintessentially happy song. A romantic comedy in song form.
9. Stay Alive | Jose Gonzalez - This song is inextricably linked to one of my favorite movies, but the words themselves always make me feel like there are hopeful, better things coming. And it makes me want to get in my car and go somewhere I’ve never been, to see something new and big and beautiful. dawn is coming, open your eyes
10. Both Sides Now | Joni Mitchell - It doesn’t really matter which Joni Mitchell song I put on this list, because they’re virtually interchangeable to me in their importance. I have loved Joni since I was small, and her quiet musical importance in my life can’t be overlooked. She’s one of the few artists who have provided more than one song to my life’s soundtrack.
11. Smokestack Lightnin’ | Howlin’ Wolf - Blues is actually my favorite genre of music, and I’ll never forget the first time I heard this song, laying on the floor with my eyes closed. It was like his voice, his pained pained voice, was coming straight from his gut. And from mine.
12. Midnight Train to Georgia | Gladys Knight & the Pips - I don’t think I could ever match Gladys’ soul, but I want to sing this song from the top of my lungs with my eyes closed every time I hear it.
13. I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch) | The Four Tops - There are some songs that are so linked with the happy moments of your childhood, you could never un-link them. (Nor, I guess, would you want to.) I listened to so much Motown as a little kid, because it was my dad’s favorite, but this one was my favorite, and always makes me think of warm summer days playing with the Wilson brothers down the street, a lime popsicle in my hand.
14. Fields of Gold | Eva Cassidy - Sometimes a cover is better than the original. This one is leaps and bounds better than the original. But I could have put Songbird here too - her voice is special and I feel it in my heart.
15. Home | Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes - I don’t care if this song got overplayed or overused. I adore its cobbled together, jam session kind of feeling, its horn section, and its message of soft love. It makes me smile.
I tag (if you want to do it): @tattooedsiren, @cinematicnomad, @novemberhush, @itsactuallycorrine, @bellakitse, @bella8876, @novemberhush, @trblwillfindme, @jalecss, @fluffygremlin, @veritasst, @halespecterwinchester, @notahotlibrarian, @happilyevernow, and #15 is whoever wants to do this, because it’s funnnnn.
