It’s come to my attention that the Mad King Ryan playlist (youtube found here and spotify found here) I made over the summer is highly enjoyable??? As in, people I’ve shared it with like it a lot, BUT, what most of them don’t know is that it started by me simply finding a song that made me go “That’s such a mad king ryan mood” and then it escalated from there and I’ve built up my own version of the kings au based on that playlist. I’ve also realized that some people (lookin at you Clay) very much want to know said story, so I’ve decided to do a more in-depth write-up of the summary and post it. I’m dividing it up into the 3 parts (King Ryan, Mad King, and Dark God), so, here’s part 1! Enjoy! (Part 2 and 3)
For the title, I first came up with “Road to Ruin”, which is a lyric from one of the songs in the Dark God section, but the song “Mountain” by Generdyn also fits the Mad King story so well, that it definitely has to be the title song. The first verse is Ryan coming back to take the throne from Michael (rise of the Mad King) and the second verse is Gavin vowing to take back the throne from the Mad King.
Part 1: King Ryan
Who Are You, Really?: Ryan, a vagabond, wanders into Achievement City one day. The people there are very suspicious of outsiders and avoid him like the plague. He makes his way to an inn and meets Geoff and the rest of the crew there. They are very suspicious of him and avoid his efforts to try and learn what’s going on in the city. A few days pass, Ryan trying to find work (he’s a traveling mage/merc and is hoping people have the need here) but, if there’s one thing the people hate more than newcomers, it’s magic (current king’s a piece of shit) and he’s turned away at every avenue. At night, he slowly gets to know the rest of AH and starts winning them over.
Dream: Geoff realizes that Ryan can help their cause and brings him into the fold. Ryan learns of the rebellion and how Geoff leads the plan to take down the current king with his crew and the help of many of the people. At Ryan’s first time meeting everyone in a more formal capacity, Geoff speaks of his dream of freeing the city and helping everyone live better lives. Ryan is skeptical that it will be that simple, but is amazed at how well everyone gets along and agrees to uphold that dream. Afterward, he hears the others’ reasons for joining up with Geoff.
Sinners: The night before the plan moves into motion, Geoff starts a “party” in the inn barroom and pays Jeremy, the local bard, to contribute music. The night is full of merriment and stories of past adventures and quests. Ryan joins in after observing everyone for a while and adds his own tales of adventure and magic.
I’m Dangerous: The party takes the castle, Geoff killing the king and taking the throne, naming Jack his advisor, Michael and Ray his guards, Ryan the court mage, Gavin his spymaster, and Jeremy the castle bard. They work on rebuilding the kingdom and establishing new laws and trying to eliminate prejudice against magic, though the going is hard. Within this time, Ryan gets closer to Geoff, and becomes more of a second advisor and confidant to the king.
Hail to the King: A few years have gone by and Geoff tires of kingship. He passes on the title to Ryan, who has become his closest advisor on political issues. Ryan deals with people not trusting him due to his magic and struggles to maintain the treaties as other kingdoms share the distrust of the arcane. He has to resort to less than savory means to keep the peace, causing the others to worry, but Ryan forbids Geoff from interfering, needing to affirm his authority without help from the previous king so he’s not viewed as a joke of a king who doesn’t know what he’s doing.
Glory and Gore: War breaks out when Ryan is unable to maintain the treaty with a neighboring kingdom. He handles is incredibly well, mobilizing his troops and minimizing casualties whilst running a merciless campaign against the once-ally. He gains immense support from his troops, whom he leads from the front and saves many with his protection spells and breaks any form of resistance that the other kingdom can drum up with blasts of magic. Upon returning from his campaign, securing his position as king and gaining the respect of his people, he continues to ride on his post-campaign boom and really cements his hold on the people, a little bitter that it took subjugating another kingdom to win the people over. The others begin to worry about Ryan and how intense his ruling is getting.
Blood on My Name: Ryan continues on the path of tyrant when the people forget what he’s done for them and start protesting the same laws that helped them win the war in the first place. The situation gets so bad that the others approach him and ask him to step down and allow Ray to take over for him to avoid another coup. He agrees, tired of everything, but is very bitter in that he feels like they don’t respect him and trust him to keep control, and is very angry at the people for turning on him so quickly. He remains in the castle, returning to his old position of court mage, but isolates himself.
Man or a Monster: A couple of years pass and Ryan continues to nurse his anger against the people and his friends. Ray suddenly gets cursed, causing Ryan to suddenly be a stronger presence during court meetings than he has in a long while as he tries to figure out how to break the curse. When Ray becomes too ill to continue daily duties, he passes the throne to Michael and Ryan begins to panic, searching into forbidden realms of magic to try and find a way to save his friend. He breaks rules that had been drilled into his head by his teachers and delves into magic that requires sacrifices to be completed, and he does not hesitate to complete them.
Control: Michael struggles to keep his duties, as he was a warrior, not a politician and has trouble keeping his temper to deal with the delicate matters. He’s by no means a bad king, but it’s clear that the rest of the court does not respect him and sees him as a brute who’s no good off the battlefield. Ryan battles his guilt over the forbidden magic and tries to rationalize it as him doing what’s right because the kingdom needs Ray to retake the throne to keep the kingdom from falling again. And, at the same time, he’s continuing to do these rituals that boost his magic in hopes that he can just overwhelm the curse with power to break it because he’s out of ideas. Ray’s getting worse, is basically bedridden at this point, and Ryan’s a mess of guilt and starting to lose it a bit. It comes to a head when he comes across some servants in the castle gossipping about him and how he probably cursed Ray to take back the throne and snaps, letting all his power out and killing them and injuring several other staff in the area. He’s able to get out of punishment, sighting stress and an “unstable artifact” he had on him as the cause of the magical episode.
