I have very few heroes. A couple of months back I learned that a man whose guitar-making philosophy  I revere had passed away. I'd never met him in person, only absorbed his ethos through articles and an interview, but his ideas profoundly shifted my perspective on the essence of craft and workmanship. When I had my storefront repair shop I had a framed picture of his hands at work holding a chisel on the wall above my bench.

Today I met one of his daughters, who brought some of his wood stockpile to sell, part of settling his estate, along with some of his tools.  Most of the knives and saws and cool toys were already gone, but I found these. A little miter guide for cutting rosette tiles, and something really esoteric that few people outside the craft would recognize - a tiny scaffold with a violin peg running through it.  It's used with a length of fishing line to winch tight cleats inside a guitar body from the outside to reinforce cracks in inaccessible places. Old school repair technology.

Care was taken in making them, I can see the rapid but sure way he eased the sharp corners. The screws that hold the box together are very old. There are scars from chisel chopping. Traces of use. Vestiges of work.  I paid her $10 for things I can make myself, but these  have a deep and indefineable meaning.

tokyo 5 - exile, transference and counter-transference

The video screen on the far left flickers, white dots falling like lucretian atoms, when they collide they do not merge. She is adjusting the line of the suit whilst looking at herself in the full length mirror. He says something to her and she nods says something equally indiscernible and takes the gun out of her pocket, and the other one from her waist band and  hands them to him. In a piroutte movement that strikes fear in the observers heart she spins and does a silent crane kick. She sits down next to him and pulls on black socks and the elegant boots they bought earlier. [here more of speech and waiting]. The transference is nearly complete now, her dressing in an elegant version of her normal black suit meeting uniform, doesn't hide the fact that the process of actualization is becoming conscious wishes.

The council room is over 12 X 12 metres square, the ceiling, with a heavy molding forming a cornice is about 12 metres high. The molding  gathers into a rosette in the centre of the ceiling - all that remains of the long gone chandelier is the brass chain that hangs from the hook. The ceiling is painted in an off white colour, the the walls are paneled in light polished or perhaps vanished wood and the parquet floor is an oak tone. The double door is set in an arched panel that is framed by two doric pillars  with the doors and pillars painted in a dark clear varnish. The walls have a series of small portraits that are either small discreet paintings or photographs. On the left had wall, in the centre there is a marble bust of a man. The heavy curtains  are drawn back from the windows letting the afternoon sunlight into the room. Against the wall on the right is a long console table with bottles of mineral water, and three unlit table lamps. A black telephone sits beside one of them with a pad of white paper and a pen. There are  four windows, each with double doors that open out onto a balcony. Across the courtyard the other side of the building comes into view, with the outside covered in scaffolding as that part of the building is undergoing renovation, cables are draped in [what sort of arc?] parabolic arcs across the front of the scaffolding.   There are guards looking out over the courtyard to prevent anyone walking past the room. The sunlight is the only illumination in the room, the photons streaming in causing deep shadows in front of the three tables each of which is about 4 metres long. Which are arranged in a U shape with thirteen chairs which are arranged on the outside of the U. There are other chairs set back along the walls. There are discreet power points set in the tables and on the walls. But unlike the rest of the building it has no network points, nor does it allow any wifi or phone signals enter the room.

Thank goodness I didn't bring the beretta.> She briefly closed her eyes and opened them again. She smiled. Aware that some at the table flinched.They offered her exile or sacrifice. Silence, sunlight  was entering the room, photons were highlighting the slowly falling dust particles, Lucretius must have felt like this looking at the sunlight in rooms like this in ancient Rome.  "What sacrifice ?" she asked. "The person you came here with must be killed. Exile means you can never return." There was a sharp intake of breath from Kenzo. Her fingers flexed. The air conditioner started to hum, blowing cool air into the room. The sound of her feet moving slightly, involuntarily. The rubber souls creaking on the parquet floor. One of the guards behind her moved. "Don't move again." In a voice that spoke of dark desires, of Pentheselia wanting to harm someone,  anti-photons falling threatening to flood the room. She turned "I need ten minutes" and without waiting for an answer left the room. She closed the door behind her and leaned against the wall, her fingers feeling the raised surface of the wallpaper. Her imaginary was screaming with rage. Exile or sacrifice. She breathes out the tension and walks down the corridor. The corridor is long and very slightly curved, a window at each end opening out onto the street, with doors on both sides. There is a cornice that runs long the ceiling and wall, at either end of the corridor it turns to the left and right into the corridor that continues round the building. There is a stairwell that  rises and falls through the building on the inside wall behind an anonymous door.  The room in which he waits is near the end of the corridor, behind a bland light oak wooden door. [To live through such a situation is to recognize the impossibility of neutrality, it liberated and intensified their most powerful  emotions. All their boundaries collapsed...]

The rooms is 3 metres by 4 metres with a high ceiling. The walls and ceiling are painted white, there is a wooden floor laid over concrete with a patterned rug on the floor. There are two comfortable sofas with a large ottoman in front of the one he is sitting on. Small wooden tables on metal frames and legs with small clear plastic floor protectors on the ends, stand at the ends of the sofas. A flat screen monitor is hanging off the wall by the door. She enters the room  from the wooden door in the left corner of the room. She feels the tension leave her as she explains about the options offered, saying she can only accept exile. He doesn't allow her to finish explaining the two options. "Come to London. I would love you too. We need some time to work things out." "And if it doesn't?" "Think of it as a three month experiment." He says seriously.   "A year then, lets run the experiment for a year, from last week." She responds standing up and begins to change her clothes dumping the jacket, shirt and trousers into the bin. She is wearing a black sports bra, black pants and some pain relief patches on the larger bruises. She bends over and kisses him. Says something quietly in his ear. Pulls on a pair of jeans, white teeshirt, socks and her black boots, a  shoulder holster and her leather jacket. She puts one pistol  in the holster and the second smaller pistol into the belt holster behind her back. She pulls on the leather jacket. "Are you sure that you can live with all my baggage?" " Ït is an experiment and i cannot imagine it failing. I will be cautious and take it a day at a time like a hopeful constructivist should..."  She looks at her new image in the mirror. The transference nearly complete.   [ Kenzo, Magrid and H look at them on the video screens. "You were right Magrid, it's love. I never imagined she could trust and love anyone like this." H watches  her daughter undressing and dressing. "Sacrifice was a terrible idea" "I proposed that that we apologize to her, but the council wanted to maintain their authority" H looks at him. "Thankyou for that." "I wonder if she would have moved him into her house, at least during the experiment..." Magrid said. H looks between them wondering at his aberrant behavior. ]   "Constructivist, i like the sound of that.  I seem to have transferred all my allegiances to us."

They walk down the corridor, she kicks Kenzo gently on the ankle. I'd probably have killed you for this choice a few days ago.  Consider that a gentle payment for making me go into exile. He apologizes. Thinking he wouldn’t have blamed her really. He tells them where they will be staying tonight.

[the second time]They separate, the two of them stand behind the single chair. H goes and stands against the wall next to Magrid, the look and listen to them speaking. "These are the thirteen lords and ladies of the yak...." surprised at how easily the comforting cynicism is when she explains things to him. " Ït has changed since the last meeting I attended, three or four of the people are new. " "Anyone I should know?"   "That's my father" pointing at him. "Which is the dragon yak ? " She gestures at Kenzo who is looking at them slightly amused. " So it's all their fault" He says looking around the room inspecting their faces. "I should thank them. These things cancel out but still thank you." The room as fallen into silence as they talk. She looks at him  and suppresses her laughter.  In the silence he asks "Ïs there any hierarchical ordering of their seating positions ? " She shakes her head looking at the new people and wondering if she needs to know them,  "Not that I know or care about. It wouldn't matter anymore anyway." He dumped the bag of weapons, which clanked mechanically onto the hard wooden chair. She thought about the machine pistols in the bag and imagined spraying the room with bullets.  Her right hand reached out reflexively. One of the new people flinched at her expression. Instead she looked at him. "I choose exile, we are going to London.  I cannot stay here everyone will be safer, happier and live longer if we go gently into exile..." He father was frozen as he heard the 'we'.  Kenzo gestured to Magrid who was looking tired and leaning against the wall. Looking around the table. "Exile it is, Magrid could you arrange that please." He pushed himself away from the wall.  "Yes I'll go to the office and start the process. Let me know where to bring the documents and other things."  She opened the bag and took out the short sword, walked across and put it down in front of her father. He looked shocked. " I resign. We will be leaving" (Kenzo wanted to smile at the 'we'). She begins to walk away, turns and looks at her father again. "Never come to London." [More irrelevant and useless words are spoken by people around the table, which are duly recorded but neither of them can ever remember them.]

[the third time] Part of the wall on the left opened, revealing another room the same size as the one they are standing in. There are tall tables with stools around them. A bar with waiters and waitresses carrying trays of food the the tables. The floor is a continuation of the parquet flooring from the council chamber, the walls and ceiling are painted white, there are no cornices, the corners between the walls and ceiling are set at a 90 degree angle. Behind the bar the wall is covered in handmade white patterned ceramic tiles. A diverse range of drinks bottles and cans stand on shelves behind the bar, they are labelled in the languages of the country of origin. At the end of the bar a waitress is serving snacks on white bone china plates. [...] She is talking to a man standing next to an elegant woman who is looking concerned at her. She writes something on a piece of paper which she hands to him. She steps forward and hugs the woman and then hugs him. They both look surprised. She turns away and leaves them looking shocked.  Looking for her brother. She sees him holding hands with a woman she does not recognize, they are walking towards Kenzo and him. They meet in the middle of the room. She moves across the room, carefully avoiding the people filling the room and talking, getting there in time to hear him ask: What are you doing here ? The woman ignores the question. I am staying hear/here with him. Raising their hands up as a gesture of empty meaning. On the shores of tokyo bay. I am here to say goodbye to you. She stood next to him, liking the way he was looking confused at the woman and her brother. <Is there anything i don't like about him she wondered>. He reached for a drink. She stopped him. There is nobody here who can be trusted. She tells her brother that the house and all its contents have been given to seo, he will supply protection for her and the child, the rest is his.
