Why You Should Play Roots of Pacha
What is Roots of Pacha?
It's a Stardew Valley Clone, sure
But it's a Stardew Valley Clone that takes place in the Stone Age
Tumblr media
In a lot of weird ways, the mechanics and complexities of Stardew make way more sense in this setting? And a bunch of things are improved, like the inventory system and interpersonal interactions
But the best parts of the game are, hands down, the people and the animals
Tumblr media
literally within one season I got a pet baby mammoth, it's too cute for words, I'm speechless and overcome and many seasons have passed since I took this screenshot
you can domesticate/bring home tons of different cool animals, including Ibex, Wild Boar, Bison, and Ostriches
You can also ride them!!!!! My current ride is an Ostrich!!! Like omg???
Tumblr media
I haven't done an outright count but it's waaaaay more diverse than Stardew by leaps and bounds, honestly its a bit embarrassing on Stardew's part. A nice decent chunk of characters - much more than in Stardew - are POC, and there are way more girls as extra characters than in Stardew. Plus, more children and more complexities of interactions. Also...

LESBIAN MOMS
LESBIAN MOOOOOOOOMS
Anyways, this game is amazing and I want it to blow up in popularity so the soundtrack will be released.... also so there can be updates/new content/mods even. Plus it's fun and I want y'all to know about it
So this is has been Meig's PaleoMedia Recommendation! Let me know if you want more recs, I tend to try everything so it says a lot that I felt I had to make this post

Hey! ✨ Today I'm sharing something different from my usual content with you! I just published a new blog post about my gaming journey. In the post, I talk about how I used to think that The Sims was the only game I could play because of my disability, and how wrong I was. Plus, I'm sharing my top 10 cozy games that I recommend for new gamers. I hope you'll enjoy reading it! Thanks for taking the time to check it out! 💛
I'd also love to know about your favorite cozy games? 🤓

details in roots of pacha that i love
the crops you can grow start out as the undomesticated version of the crops we know until you know enough of it
when you walk by someone playing an instrument, their instrument is added to the BGM within a certain range
every character has their own specific dance. garrek does the gangnam style lmao
the characters repeatedly mention tech they want to invent that we in the real world know of, and the character always wants to name it something close but so very stupid. i love it.
characters do actually have relationships with each other that develop along with the village itself
During a specific totem quest, the BGM changes instrumentation depending on which instrument/symbol is active
you literally don't have a specific/accurate clock on your UI until you discover and research the technology for it!
each animal you can tame has a different song for the rhythm minigame you have to play to tame them. my favorite is the one for the cave lions.
FISHING MINIGAME GOOD. VERY GOOD. i dont have to click a million times, just mouse over the fish patiently!
when you level up in specific plants, they visibly change to the domesticated versions if they're plants that have multiple harvests
recipes you cook are individually animated with whatever specific tools/utensils they require, and its fun to watch.
every festival has little secrets or a minigame to play
THE PAINTING YOU CAN DO ON FURNITURE?? ITS SO GOOD????
Anyways, here's my gf in game who I love dearly :)

I wish people would describe Roots of Pacha in terms other than "Stardew Valley but stone age". Surely there are shared design elements - farming gameplay, festivals, heart events. But those same things are also present in Harvest Moon, which gave rise to farming sims as a genre in the first place.
But Pacha is more than capable of standing apart as its own thing. It has vibrant worldbuilding, lovable characters, and it's proficient at giving familiar gameplay mechanics a unique flavor. You want to grow crops? First, you'll need to find them in the wild, and if you grow that particular species enough, you'll domesticate it, visibly changing it. And it's not just old tired potatoes either. Did you know what millet is? Me neither.
Pacha goes above and beyond when it comes to quality of life features. It just released, and it already has some options that took Stardew years to introduce (gift preference tracking, summoning your mount), or some that exist in SDV only through mods (tracking characters on map, time speed control).
But the side of Pacha that impressed me the most is just how dynamic the world is. The village is always growing and changing. You don't feel like the sole driver of progress for the community, but rather a part of it. And by some coding witchery, character dialogue reacts to everything that happens: heart events, new technologies discovered, your relationships with other characters, and even the pet you just adopted.
It's just all around a solid title that deserves recognition for doing things in its own way.

slight redesign of the villagers in roots of pacha
they're mostly the same except some outfits simplification, more body types, details like freckles added, and hair colors and styles changes when characters were too similar. some of them had body paints that were ignored not from me thinking it's uncool but cause i colored them all the same day and was tired lol
do not erase the caption, use or rePOST my art (reblog ok)

Roots of Pacha is a Stardew-alike in that it's a fairly typical farming sim with a pixel art style. It's got caves to mine in, beasts to pet and milk and ride, and crops to grow, plus a friendship/romance mechanic based on gifting and interaction. However, in terms of story and paradigm, Roots of Pacha is very different from Stardew. Stardew Valley is a dark dystopia of capitalism where small businesses struggle to compete with big corporations, poverty and alcoholism run rampant, and the townspeople are isolated and depressed. Pacha, on the other hand, takes place in a paleolithic setting. You play as a caveman (or cavelady) and are nestled deep in the bosom of your clan. There is no imperative to accumulate money--only to contribute to the clan's well being. Crafting recipes are unlocked as people in the clan have new ideas, learn and experiment. Everyone in the clan is intimately familiar with everyone else, and the leaders strive for peace with neighboring clans, who often hang out in your village just to be social. In every way that Stardew is dystopian, Pacha is Utopian. The people are able to commune with the spirits and nature, dance with each other, and gossip about life. Instead of combat in the mines, the game gives you a series of puzzles facilitated by animal spirit guides. It's a game about curiousity and joy where the farmer isn't the only character dialed into the magic of the universe. 10/10 recommend

So Roots of Pacha has a little festival where you can do pixel art and because of who I am as a person I tried to combine the Scythian mummy tattoos with the cute fat paleolithic cave paintings of horses. Did I succeed? No. Do I kind of want to try painting this as NOT pixel art? GOD yes.

Is anyone else playing Roots of Pacha? I'm in so deep 😭 for some reason the whole prehistoric theme speaks to me. I just want to dance and collect seeds while riding a wild boar. 😭
