Band of Brothers Ages: IRL vs. Actors
Did you know that according to a 1947 study, almost half the men who served in WWII were still under age 26 by the end of the war?
What this is : A (very long) post comparing the ages of the actors in Band of Brothers vs. the IRL figures they are portraying.
Background: Did I need to do this? No. Did anyone ask for this? Also no. Did I do it anyway? Yes.
Disclaimers: This is SUPER approximate for the most part. I based IRL ages off of D-Day unless otherwise noted, and actor ages off of January 1, 2000, the year filming took place (the latter is where the most variation will be because I didn't try to figure out what month filming started). I also didn't fact-check birthdays beyond googling. Most are sourced from the Band of Brothers and Military Wikis on fandom.com, Wikipedia, and IMDb.
I broke them up into rough categories, which are, again, approximate. I know I often forget how young the real life people were here, and this was a good reminder of that. I also found it interesting to see which actors were actually younger than their roles!

Judge Luke Charles Moore (February 25, 1924 - December 18, 1994) was born in Collinsville, Illinois but resided in Memphis where he attended local public schools and entered Lemoyne College. His college career was interrupted when he was drafted into the Army. He was assigned to the 92nd Infantry (Buffalo) Division and saw combat in Italy. He enrolled in Howard University and graduated with honors. He graduated from Georgetown University Law School near the top of his class in 1954.
He was admitted to the DC Bar and joined the DC law firm of Cobb, Howard & Hayes until President Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed him Assistant US Attorney for DC. President Kennedy appointed him Chief United States Marshal for DC. He became the first African American to serve as Chief Marshal in any Federal District since Frederick Douglass as US Marshal for the DC. His appointment came just months before the Ole Miss Crisis.
Under orders from President Kennedy, over 300 Border Patrol agents were made special deputies, bringing the total number of federal law enforcement officials to 538. Meredith finally became a student at Ole Miss, rioting broke out on the Ole Miss campus. The marshals and federal troops were called up to restore order. He worked directly under Chief Marshal McShane and Attorney General Robert Kennedy, supervising, coordinating, and monitoring the US Marshal’s activity in Oxford.
He was not the only African American Marshal involved in the Ole Miss integration. Black deputy US marshals were not allowed to participate in the initial integration confrontation but soon afterwards they became a regular part of the Meredith security detail.
He remained Chief US Marshal for DC after President Kennedy’s assassination and through the administration of President Lyndon Baines Johnson. In 1969 he was reappointed to the US Attorney’s Office. President Richard Nixon appointed him Judge of the Superior Court of DC. He remained on the bench until his retirement in 1987. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

È morta a Roma all’età di ottantanove anni la produttrice Marina Cicogna, produttrice di film quali C’era una volta il West di Sergio Leone, Il giorno della civetta di Damiano Damiani, Teorema e Medea di Pier Paolo Pasolini, Indagine su un cittadino al di sopra di ogni sospetto e La classe operaia va in paradiso di Elio Petri, e molti altri.
Nata nel maggio 1934, a Palazzo Volpi di Misurata, dal conte Cesare Cicogna Mozzoni e dalla contessa Annamaria Volpi di Misurata, Marina Cicogna Mozzoni Volpi di Misurata consegue la maturità classica e frequenta il Sarah Lawrence College di New York - avendo come insegnante Marguerite Yourcenar -, prima di optare per una scuola di fotografia.
Prima donna produttrice in Europa, nel ’67 diventa titolare, insieme al fratello Ascanio - detto “Bino” - della casa di produzione e distribuzione Euro International Films - portando in Italia importanti film stranieri come L’uomo del banco dei pegni (1965) di Sidney Lumet, con Rod Steiger e Bella di giorno (1967) di Luis Buñuel, con Catherine Deneuve - e si afferma fin da subito con opere importanti e di successo, fra cui C’era una volta il West (1968) di Sergio Leone, con Claudia Cardinale, Charles Bronson, Henry Fonda e Jason Robards, Il giorno della civetta (1968) di Damiano Damiani, tratto dal libro omonimo di Leonardo Sciascia (fu il secondo libro di Sciascia ad esser portato al cinema dopo A ciascuno il suo di Elio Petri, uscito l’anno avanti) ed interpretato da Franco Nero, C. Cardinale, Lee J. Cobb, Nehemiah Persoff e Tano Cimarosa, Teorema (1968) di Pier Paolo Pasolini, Metti una sera a cena (1969) di Giuseppe Patroni Griffi, Medea (1969) di P. P. Grande appassionata di fotografia, negli anni della cosiddetta “Dolce vita” immortala personalmente, perlopiù in contesti informali, Gianni Agnelli, Brigitte Bardot, Richard Burton, Yul Brynner, Claudia Cardinale, Charlie Chaplin, Federico Fellini, Henry Fonda, Greta Garbo, Ava Gardner, Maria Callas e Onassis, Audrey Hepburn, Herbert von Karajan, Louis Malle, Silvana Mangano, la principessa Margaret, Jeanne Moreau, Ezra Pound, Elizabeth Taylor, Luchino Visconti. La maggior parte fra tali istantanee è poi confluita nel libro Scritti e Scatti (Mondadori Electa, 2009), da cui fu tratta anche un’apprezzata mostra fotografica.
Un secondo libro fotografico, La mia Libia (Edimond, 2012), raccoglie foto degli anni parzialmente vissuti a Tripoli - fra il ’57 e il ’67 - nella settecentesca villa di famiglia.
Con Gucci realizzato il libro d’arte e fotografia Imitatio Vitae (Marsilio/Gucci, 2019), sui capitelli di Palazzo Ducale.
Nel 2021 è protagonista del documentario che ripercorre le tappe della sua vita: Marina Cicogna - La vita e tutto il resto di Andrea Bettinetti.
Nel 2023 è uscita la sua autobiografia, intitolata Ancora spero. Una storia di vita e di cinema (Marsilio) e scritta con Sara D’Ascenzo. Nello stesso anno riceve il David di Donatello alla Carriera.

Robert Charles- The Lynching victim who fought back...
Robert Charles was a Black freedom fighter in a time when recently emboldened white supremacists thought they could treat Black people any kind of way and had to find out the hard way that it was gonna take some ass to get some ass.
Born in 1865 in Copiah County, Mississippi, Charles most likely watched his father and older male relatives gain their rights to vote when the 15th Amendment was passed, and then lose their rights to vote after the 1877 withdrawal of federal troops from the u.s. south, where they had protected recently emancipated Africans from their former slaveholders. Before federal troops ever left, but increasingly after they left, white supremacist mobs, gangs, and paramilitary forces, and of course the police, terrorized Blacks out of voting, murdering Print Matthews, a white Copiah County sheriff who organized Black and white people together, and several of Matthews' Black associates and supporters were killed or forced to flee. Charles was alive when and where all of this was going on.
Despite growing up at the height of racist repression, Charles became an outspoken advocate of Black people to abandon racist America and return to Africa. He handed out the literature of Reverend Henry McNeal Turner, an early Pan-Africanist.
In 1892, Charles and his brother walked fully armed into Rolling Fork, Mississippi, got into a gunfight with a white man, and took back a pistol he had taken from them.
Charles was likely familiar with the gruesome 1899 lynching and dismemberment of Sam Hose, a Black laborer in Georgia who stood up to his employer.
In New Orleans on July 23, 1900, as Charles was visiting his girlfriend, some white policemen stopped him. In the resulting confrontation, Charles shot and injured one policeman with his pistol and was shot in the leg. Escaping to his room, he treated his leg wound and retrieved a Winchester rifle and a small metal device he used to make his own bullets. Over the next few days, as he took shelter first in his room and then in a friend’s house, he shot 27 white people who were coming to kill him. He killed 7, including 4 police, before he was killed and his body torn apart by white mobs. In the riots that followed, white mobs murdered and injured many African American residents of New Orleans.
Robert Charles is considered an example of what Russell Shoats, in his essay "Black Fighting Formations," calls the “free shooter” model of resistance, in which a small number of well-armed individuals terrorizes and immobilizes the more powerful oppressor population and escapes into a small network of safe houses, even when she or he does not have access to a larger fighting formation (like a cell or a guerrilla army).
