one thing i notice so much about maven is how he's always describing himself as "the shadow of the flame."
maven being the shadow, and cal being the flame.
he's obviously pointing out that Cal has always been more prioritized than him. More seen, more loved.
But the thing about flames is that they don't have shadows.
It's so significant because Maven feels that he doesn't even EXIST when Cal is around.
Like I just let that sink in today and I feel so so much for him. 😭

something in my soul is touched when i reread the scene in war storm where maven goes to mare's stilts home and destroys it
it feels like he was in mourning, you know? because he had lost her. he lost her so so many times, but she was so close to him THIS time and she slipped right between his fingers like cupped water.
and it specifically feels like mourning because maven calore didn't feel love. all he ever felt was loss and the idea of love that was more leaned toward obsession. so instead of mourning in sadness and depression like he did with thomas, he mourned with rage and destruction with mare.

one of my absolute favorite things about the multi povs in King's Cage - War Storm, is the fact that every single person that had a pov chapter (besides Maven) has called or referred to Maven as a child.
I rly wish I had ss for this but I'm too lazy to go through every chapter to find them (💀)
but I remember that the more the story went on, the more the characters began to realize what a child Maven was. which is ironic considering the fact that he turned from a boy prince that no one looked at to the King of Norta who everyone feared.
everyone slowly began to realize what a child Maven Calore truly was. and it's almost haunting. the only person who I feel always knew was Cal.

maven is so sassy bro 😭 there are so many scenes where he's being sassy and snarky and jokey its insane. even when he was held captive in war storm, he always found a way to be a smartass.

the way he pales when the thunder rolls
honestly this scene makes me so sad for what...like truly idky
i wonder if maven ever wonders what could've been if his mother hadn't have done what she did to him

I love so much that Victoria always reminds us about how much Maven lies, but one of my favorite lies will be how humble and good he is to his people when his intentions are so ominous and cruel.
in King's Cage, we watch him welcome Newbloods into his army with warm, open arms and dashing white smiles. Not once does he retch or look like he is disgusted with them. His smile and generosity seem so genuine.
Page 195 of King's Cage says, "Maven alone seems unfazed, smiling for the workers and their tattooed necks. He doesn't cover his mouth like Evangeline or retch at the smell like so many others, myself included."
like not even Mare could pretend 😭 but Maven can
Victoria not only tells us that Maven is a good liar, but she's SHOWING us, too. As a writer, I love this scene entirely.

i have NEVER seen anyone talk about how good the scene where Nanny reveals herself as a spy in Maven's court is.
This quote specifically KILLS ME EVERYTIME because it dives so deep into the intense contrast of Maven and Mare's characters, regardless of similar they think they are.
Mare asks, "When you are sick, who do you blame? Your body or the disease?" and VICTORIA AVEYARD WRITES "He glares down at me, and I feel hallow." And finally, Maven says, "You blame the cure that didn't work."
THIS IS SOOO DEEP AND NO ONE TALKS ABOUT IT?? HELLO????

I just finished my Glass Sword reread. the ending GAGS me everytime.
When Mare sees Maven again for the first time after Elara's death, she says that his mother's death has taken a toll on him already. She says there are bruise like shadows under his eyes.
It's so strange to me that he can mourn her. He lost his mother, the woman who abused him his entire life, and he MOURNED her. I would personally be celebrating like hello...
but Maven and Elara loved one another in their own twisted way. He'd whine and complain to her in Red Queen, and she'd just urge him to suck it up for a few hours. She'd fix his collar and make sure he was nice and presentable. In their own ways, they loved eachother.
It's wild to me that that can happen, you know? Because I would've reacted so differently if it were me in Maven's place.
Idk I just observed that. I kinda feel like I'm just yapping 💀 but Maven mourning his abusers death really kinda showed me how even within a toxic, bruise, and fucked up relationship, love is existent.

red queen fanfic writers hear me out
mareven the little mermaid au
I MEAN THINK ABOUT IT
If mare was from underwater and maven is the prince (or king) with fire abilities, imagine what a story that would unfold.
mare wanting to escape the fate of her future and go into land thinking she would find her freedom
and maven unable to escape the burden of his kingdom and his duties going to the ocean because he has no where else to go (which is severely ironic because of his abilities)
but when they find eachother it's a mix of heaven and hell because they are NOT ONLY from different worlds, but nature goes against them in every way possible.
they think that they are going to save eachother, give eachother the freedom they so desperately want, but they end up drowning in a heap of desperation and obsession.

i'm almost done rereading Glass Sword by Victoeia Aveyard, and I've just realized something about Cal that I didn't notice before.
Growing up, Cal was never my favorite. I favored Maven so much, maybe even a little too much. So, Cal was very annoying to me? I hated his every line and I was very irritated with every word he said and every action he took. But I was 13 at that time.
I am 17 years old now. And I've found a sense of maturity I didn't realize I had once discovering this.
Cal Calore is a burning flame. He is passionate and driven, with a kind heart, but he is indecisive, and this flaw drags him down.
I noticed just how often his trauma is overlooked. Cal lost everything. His mother, at a young age. His father. His brother. His friends. His kingdom. His home. His titles. The list goes on. He was taken from everything he knew and slammed down into an entire new world.
He wasn't even welcomed by the Reds. The first thing they did to Cal was lock him up alone when they reached Tuck.
And then when they met Nix, Nix was immediately taunting Cal for being "seduced by Mare into killing his father", but once Cal reveals the truth of what happened, they all fell silent.
No one. Not a single person, except probably Mare, has asked Cal if he was okay.
Cal lost everything. I mean literally everything. And not once in the whole book did we see him cry, break down, or fall apart.
That is a kind of strength I could never imagine.
