#gonna talk about hope and multiclass stuff down here so. uh. yeah. no real specific spoilers but it is a hell of a ramble#also thanks nines for the subclass suggestion youve given me something to truly be insane about. anyway#Because. Bards. Especially lore bards to me are something I love because!! it's the magical secrets at level six!! not even for mechanical#reasons. it's just the storytelling. the want to preserve that knowledge and grow new stories from it (it's a cycle. stories are.)#it becomes even more intrinsic to the class. preserving histories and connection. thinking about how hope's songs are folk tales and#lullabies she learned as a kid. and. Bards! high charisma! you have performance! but you're a support caster you're not in the spotlight.#filling in the gaps. helping everyone be better! helping everyone along their story! the rng of binspo. you're trusting the dice to tell it#a bit of luck sure but it's all up to fate and chance and sometimes chance is all you have! but! you! make! the! best! of! it! and then.#clerics. ough. clerics obviously have their connection with the divine but to me it's more about what the cleric themself believes.#you ally yourself with the beliefs of a god. It's your beliefs your hopes your dreams!! that's all you! you chose to believe in that#and your belief is made real! into its purest form as magic but that magic is *you* it's your love. it's her love. and the peace domain too#you're not built for fighting. the social cleric class. Talking to people is literally Your Thing. you gain a people skill 1st level.#because communication is your thing! it's your magic! combine that with a high level bard and ough. emboldening bond too.#you believe in these people so much. you love so much that the connections between you all become that magic. Trust so strong it's tangible#But it's still only fate! Bond isnt a set amount it's a d4 it's still up to the dice It's about being a bard and believing in your craft#and telling the story while you're still in it. it's a story you will never be able to completely control but you love these people#and you're willing to try to get them a happy end regardless. and you know they're trying too.#hope#is this 1am gibberish? yes.#has dnd brainrot got to me? yes

Bond 1: “You know, Master, I spent a long time out of human society. So, I need you to tell me to my face if I ever say something strange. Seriously. I’m not joking. I really don’t know what people talk about these days. I’m counting on your guidance.”
Profile 1: Oisin, the son of the legendary hero Fionn MacCumhail. Because his father had already eaten the Fish of All Knowledge, he was gifted from birth with wisdom and a quick wit. His name literally means "little deer" or "fawn."
Bond 2: “What was it like, growing up with such a famous father? Well, that’s a difficult question. Father has always been good to me. I’ve always felt that the Fianna were my family. Even the most loving and tight knit families sometimes fight… and even so… hm. I wonder… …Um, sorry. [slightly nervous laugh] What was I saying again?”
Profile 2: The story of Oisin's birth is a tragedy. His mother, Sadhbh, was Fionn's second wife. Though they were madly in love, his mother had another suitor, who was a cruel and wicked mage. One day, when Fionn was out hunting, the mage lured the pregnant Sadhbh out of their home by impersonating her husband, and transformed her into a deer before loosing her in the forest.
When Fionn returned to their home and found it empty, he immediately marshaled his knights and began to search for them, leaving no stone under-turned.
Eventually, the toddler Oisin was recovered - but his mother was never seen again.
Bond 3: “Yes, yes. My wife is the most beautiful woman in the world. Every man says that about his wife, but in my case, it’s actually true! She’s a wonderful, wonderful woman, and her family always treated me so kindly. I simply lost track of time, that’s all. Yes, I always meant to go back and visit, but the opportunity always… Eh? I trailed off again? I’m not sure why I keep getting lost in thought. Anyway, let’s talk about something else.”
Profile 3: Fionn was never the same after Sadhbh's disappearance. Plunged into a deep mourning, it was said that his entire personality shifted, until he was nearly a shadow of his former, magnanimous self. It was Oisin who volunteered to seek a new bride for his father, perhaps desperate to see his father smile again. It was these events that eventually lead to the Pursuit, another tale that is narrated in the Fenian Cycle.
Bond 4: “Was it hard? Yes, I suppose it was. All the places that I had loved, and all the people I had loved were gone. Even my own father. Even my first son. And then, I was even stupid enough to fall off my horse. Hah. Sorry, Master, I’ll go now. No, no. It’s alright. It’s just that I would never want you to see me like that. That’s all.”
Profile 4: Like the other Knights of Fianna, Oisin lived a long life full of adventures too numerous to recount in full. He married a fairy woman and went to live in Tir na Nog, the land of eternal youth. Eventually, he decided to return to the mortal world to visit his family. His wife gifted him a magical horse, and told him that he would not be able to dismount, or the blessings of eternal youth that he had been granted would disappear.
When Oisin emerged from the Land of Youth, he discovered that 300 years had passed, and the Fianna had all but completely disappeared.
Bond 5: “I will make sure that they remember you. I’ll fight beside you until the end – and then, I’ll make sure that the world remembers you. Really, it’s the least that I can do. But let’s not talk about depressing things. For some reason, I’ve been wanting to write a love song lately. What do you think? ‘Too early…’ It’s never too early for beautiful music! [laughing] Really, you ought to enjoy life a little more, Master.”
Profile 5: DORD FIANNA - The War Cry to Defend Humanity. A war cry to strike fear in the hearts of humanity's enemies, a power that can wake sleeping kings.
This Noble Phantasm would not normally belong to Oisin. It is said, in Ireland, that their great hero Fionn is not dead, but slumbers beneath a mountain, surrounded by his loyal knights, and that the one who blows upon his hunting horn will rise him from his sleep. When he rises, he will resume his duties, to protect humanity.
But the stories of the Fianna exist in the modern age because, after emerging from Tir na Nog, Oisin wrote them all down. Using his talents for word and song, he told the tales of valor and heroism and adventure, the stories of his friends and family to anyone who would listen. After an accident caused him to fall from the horse that should have carried him back to his beloved wife, Oisin lay dying, feeling each of those 300 years seep back into him, even as he desperately tried to finish the story he was telling.
So in this form, the Dord Fianna is not a war cry, but more like a song.
Bonus Profile, Post Interlude: In one version of the story of Oisin, he encounters a certain saint while traveling around Ireland. The saint listens to the knight's tales, but even so, because Oisin is still a pagan and an immortal himself, he and the saint don't get along very well and part on bad terms. Even though Oisin claims that it wasn't like that, and even so, he never holds grudges, he still can't help but make a face whenever the saint's name comes up in conversation.

DIGIMON ADVENTURE: LAST EVOLUTION KIZUNA
Trailer Analysis & Thoughts
Because what’s the point of having a new trailer if not to overanalyze it?
First impressions
The comparison between this and the first few trailers and the approach for tri. could not be more stark. Kizuna puts all the cards on the table up front and gives us fans exactly what we want: great visuals, iconic music, and the main gist of story & themes (not an international release date, though).
The comparisons to tri. are inevitable at any point in the lead up and during the new movie. Please don’t take any of this as a “negative criticism” of tri, a show I obviously adored. But I want this to be better than tri.
The feeling I get is that Kizuna is learning the right lessons from tri. — the good parts, of course, but also learn from what it did less well. So I’m really thankful that we have Hiromi Seki and some of the original staff on board and hopefully doing a great job. Tri.’s preference mystery and challenging, hermetic storytelling seems to be squarely thrown out in favor of a more traditional, fan-centered, uncomplicated approach. The fandom reactions to the trailer are overwhelmingly positive, so it was probably a good decision.
Visuals/Music
The PV shows once again that people shouldn’t panic about concept art. The characters look beautiful, age appropriate and even well-dressed!
The animation and look of the movie looks stunning but, again, this doesn’t mean we should raise our expectations too much. tri. too had lovely visuals and battle sequences and then it had parts that were simply not animated at all.
I’m glad they’re using the original version of Butter-Fly rather than another posthumous remix or special edition. Wada should be remembered, yes, but not in an exploitative way.
Characters
The trailer starts by actually setting up the characters and where they are at the start of this story.
Taichi rushing to university
Yamato looking pretty while being angsty over food
Sora determinedly doing Ikebana
Dr Jou at work saving lives
Mimi working hard on her business
Takeru and Hikari hanging out like the carefree students (could it be — gasp! —a date?!)
Daisuke, Miyako, Iori, and Ken alive and well, with actual faces and lines.
“Young Genius Menoa” makes her introduction, and unlike the introductions of Meiko, Maki and Diago (RIP - gone but not forgotten), this time the don’t have to speculate who she could be, since they actually tell us. I appreciate not having to go through another round of “Which previously seen character could she be?”.
Group dynamics seem interesting, by the way...
Half the Adventure team doesn’t seem to be involved in Digimon business and it seems like they never see each other.
The 02 team, by contrast, sticks together (it’s almost like they’re actual best friends!)
Takeru and Hikari have apparently been excluded from the 02 squad, which given what happened in tri. is probably fair
The mysterious antagonist is also introduced... and named!
EOSMON, a Queen Bee digimon who steals the consciousness of adult children.
Why a bee? IDK. But for once the story doesn’t seem to involve the End of the Worlds. Considering the last time the Chosen were fighting on three fronts representing supernatural forces and divine beings, a new, all-powerful Final Boss almost feels refreshing (never dismiss Vamdemon, though!).
Story
The trailer also nicely establishes the main plot of the movie, which has already been descried in detail on the official website:
Eosmon is stealing the consciousness of adult chosen children, including some of our main characters.
The bond between the Chosen and the Digimon is at risk of disappearing as they grow up.
Their new digivice has a countdown, indicating the number of evolutions they have left before the bond disappears.
Taichi and Yamato decide to fight despite of this risk.
Two new mysterious evolutions appear!
Tumblr media
At first glance, this seems a genius idea:
It provides an organic reason to remove characters from the chessboard (leaving Taichi and Yamato as protagonists);
It automatically raises the stakes for Taichi and Yamato, since we can bet Eosmon got to their siblings, loved ones, and friends — and the only way of saving them is by making a choice to sacrificing their bond with their partners;
They get to introduce a new kind of special evolution that’s stronger than Omegamon, and makes sure Taichi and Yamato remain the strongest members of the team. (Someone has suggested they will “fuse” with their digimon, like in Tamers, and sounds great).
Note:
The part about the bond between the Digimon being threatened by adulthood could the reason why Kakudou balked out. It looks like the kind of tiny lore-related detail that would contradict nothing concrete in canon, except Kakudou’s own vision of the universe and its rules. As of now, I don’t see any signs for a significant departure from the previous shows, as people speculated at the time.
Themes
Yamato’s lines and other points of the trailer reveal the movie will tackle familiar topics at the start of any Adventure story:
the Chosen Children can’t be at peace for too long
the kids have the habit of growing apart slowly whenever they aren’t engaged in saving the world
how does the role of a Chosen Child evolve when he or she stops being a child?
the need to decide when and why you are fighting
how humans adapt to digimon living among them
Presumably, at this point in time digimon should be public knowledge, the number of chosen should be rising, and digimon are coexisting in the real world at this time. We are in a fast track towards the epilogue world, so the implications this new status quo has, how the Chosen Children around the world live, the politics of a new world with digimon... all would be very intriguing.
For many years, people have wondered if there are any biological/spiritual reasons why digimon are partnered with children, how adult partnerships could work, and whether it’s even possible to be a “Chosen Adult” (this is why keeping the translation DIgiDestined is a bad choice.) tri. already explored the psychological tensions caused by the increasing gap between the maturing chosen and their eternally childlike partners, and how traumatic it can be for an adult who stops being a chosen child and having a digimon partner by their side. It should be interesting to find out if there’s an actual in-universe mechanism or rule that favours pure-hearted children over complicated adults, leading to an inevitable situation of separation and of being an “ex” Chosen.
It should also be interesting if the children themselves have different positions towards their role / the DW — some of them might be very happy to lead normal lives, while others need to keep that connection to the DW and want to keep fighting for it.
Questions Raised:
A possible downside of this trailer is that it doesn’t leave much to the imagination when it comes to what will happen in the movie. Sure, there may be a huge twist. But plot armor and the Epilogue ensure the kids will win at the end and find a way to preserve their partners even as they become adults. Not complaining: after tri., I would welcome a more traditional story.
Still, some things made me curious:
What is the origin of Eosmon?
What are the new evolutions? How will they get them? According to her bio, Menoa “makes references to relationships between humans and Digimon nobody’s heard of” — will she be the one to get them there?
Will the events of tri. play into this movie at all?
What will the shorts add to the movie, especially for characters who don’t get much screen time?
Will a digimon story featuring adults finally dare to touch romantic relationships?
Will we get special cameos?
What will we learn about the characters’ path to their Epilogue endgames?
Will we get any Epilogue hints?
Will this truly be the last Adventure story? Can anyone believe that?
I just hope Western fans can get answers sooner rather than later.

10 Things Most People Don't Know About fireinsidemusic
Just one these types of millennial who knocked my socks off was this younger Woman named Anushka, a teenager in her early twenties. Which Interpreter Will I Be Today? (wk. 10)
I never saw myself as a nature interpreter, mainly because I had a very classic and small-minded idea of what a nature interpreter was. I didn’t see a nature interpreter as much more than a simple tour guide. I thought nature interpretation was quite simple and forward. However, through this semester, I’ve learned that nature interpretation looks like so many different things. As an interpreter, you can take on so many different roles and present nature in so many different ways to your audiences.
Tumblr media
This image encapsulates how I viewed nature interpreters before I understood the wide range of roles they can take on. Photo retrieved from: https://www.villrein.no/nature-interpretation
For my final post, I’d like to go through the different roles that I want to take on as a nature interpreter. I’ve learned there are so many ways that I can present nature to others in order to deepen their connection with the world around them. I love that I can share my passion for science and the environment, while simultaneously providing an enriching experience for others. Here are the types of nature interpreters that I intend to be for my audience and learners:
The Environmental Ambassador
When I picked my major, environmental biology, it was because I had a passion for nature and the environment. Throughout my academic career, I’ve taken numerous courses on biodiversity, plants, biology, etc. Taking this course has taught me how to better communicate scientific thoughts to wide ranges of audiences. Because I feel a sense of responsibility in ensuring wildlife can thrive during this battle against climate change, my personal ethic definitely involves being an environmental ambassador and teaching my audience about the threats facing our precious ecosystems. I feel as though it’s my duty to take what I have learned and communicate it in an effective way to the general public, as scientists sometimes follow short in this arena. I will use my other interpreter roles to communicate this science in an engaging way.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbR-5mHI6bo
This video has engaging visuals and shows how environmental science can be communicated in a nuanced, easy-to-follow way
The Listener
Not only will be an educator to my audience, I hope to learn from them as well. It’s important for me to engage with audiences of all ages from all backgrounds as I believe learning from them and integrating their knowledge into my teachings could be a huge asset! I believe it is incredibly important to listen to others because they provide a unique perspective that you may not learn from anyone else. Something I’ve learned this year given the pandemic is that everyone is operating in different realities. To better understand other peoples’ perspectives, and in order for you to gain new ones, it’s key to listen with an open mind and heart without judgement. With nature interpretation and life in general, it’s really important to expose yourself to different perspectives, so that you can broaden your own toolkit.

The Storyteller
An incredibly effective way to teach people without sounding like a lecturer is storytelling, something that has been a very old folk tradition developed from the Native Americans (Beck et al. 2018). In present day, this is very prominent in nature documentaries such as Blue Planet and Planet Earth. I would use the tips by Strauss (1996) through sharing legend and folk-tales where fit, as I find these types of stories very interesting myself. I would also use imagery while attempting to engage all the senses of my audience, making them feel enthralled in the interpretation. When reading my peers blog posts, I’ve seen them take on the technique of telling a story from the perspective of a plant/animal. I’ve really enjoyed those posts, so I’ll be adding that technique to my repertoire as well!

The Artist
As Beck et al. explain, art has shown to be extremely effective in attracting and serving audiences (Beck et al. 2018). It’s a way of gathering people who may not necessarily be huge on the environment and bringing them back to nature (Beck et al. 2018). I’ve discussed non-conventional forms of art in my posts before, such as cooking and making other creations with wild edibles. It’s safe to say most people love a tasty meal or treat, and nature can provide that for us! Food is an art form that is great for roping people in who may not have a huge interest in nature. I hope to help people form an appreciation for nature through their stomachs! This is just another tool to help generate citizens who care about the environment and have a desire to preserve it.

The Healer
I think most of us in this course have the same understanding; that nature is innately healing. Not everyone feels this way, and not everyone has had the chance to experience the wonderous healing capabilities of nature. I want to open people up to just how healing it can be. Moreover, I’d love to heal people with botanicals derived from nature. There are so many medicinal plants that grow all around us and I’d love to introduce people to these plants and their properties. I also think it’s important to remind people that a lot of pharmaceuticals we use are plant-derived. It’s a reminder that us humans work synergistically with nature and we must preserve it in order to continue reaping its benefits.

The Role Model
I hope one group that I have the chance to impact and be a role model for are children. One of the reasons for this is because they are highly impressionable, especially at young ages. I would love to be able to introduce them to the wonders that exist outdoors in hopes that they carry it with them throughout their lives! Another large reason is because they will soon make up the adult population and will be the group of people who care for our resources – so it is key that they understand how important these resources are while aiming to respect and preserve them. Going back to the listener point, it’s key to listen to children as they share some perspectives you truly won’t get from anywhere else. Above all else, I want to provide them with adventure, fantasy, and imagination as these are all aspects that are key for children in terms of nature interpretation (Beck et al. 2018).

It’s been an introspective time learning who I am as a nature interpreter. I’ve learned many tools and I feel confident in approaching interpretation even when it comes to a wide range of audiences. I hope my bubbly personality, sense of humor, and love for nature and the environment shine through to my audiences. I cant wait to see what the future brings!
Did any of these roles resonate with how you’d like to go about nature interpretation? Do you find these approaches to be effective with your audiences? I’m curious to hear your thoughts as always!

Here’s the next post in my Off the Shelf series, where I review the most recent books I’ve read. I do my best to capture the experience of the book beyond just “I LOVED IT,” which is usually what I yell at people in the streets after I finish a good one.
There’s a saying in the publishing world that goes something like, “Nothing sells new releases like back catalog.” (Or something like that.) Once someone falls deeply in love with your style of writing or storytelling (something all of us yearn for), it’s likely they’ll pick up anything you have published and anything you will publish in the future. All this is to say that as soon as John Green’s Turtles All the Way Down went up for preorder, I put my name on the list without knowing anything about it but the author and title.
Turtles, as it is casually known, was released in October 2017, five years after his previous release, (my personal favorite) The Fault in Our Stars. In those five years, John Green did many things, but the one I’m here to tell you about today is that he crafted a page-turning young adult novel about life, mental illness, and prehistoric lizards that I devoured in about three days.
Let me be clear: I love John Green. I want to be John Green when I grow up. I met him once while wearing a shirt with his face on it which he complimented me on as he signed my copy of Paper Towns (turns out it was actually harder and more expensive to buy an ~unsigned~ copy of Turtles, so this one came pre-signed. Not complaining). Yes, I almost cried when he got out of his car. Photo credit @Vanilla, thank you so much for letting me have my moment without a phone/camera in my hand.
John’s writing inspires me and my style, and he’s one of the biggest reasons I want to write YA. I tried to be as objective as possible writing this, but to say I was looking forward to reading something new from him and already inclined to enjoy whatever it was is the understatement of the century. Once I read TFIOS 2012, all I had was back catalog to hold me over until Turtles (and you can imagine how quickly I blew through all of it.
The book is packed full of characters who are complex and deep and interesting, especially the protagonist Aza, who navigates both her normal life and the extraordinary mystery of a businessman who has disappeared and perhaps falling in love with an old friend, Davis,  who also happens to be his son, all while dealing with repetitive behaviors driven by her OCD. You see her progress and regress and go through all the ups and downs in between. The portrayal of mental illness in fiction by an author who is affected by it in real life is really what makes this book so important: even those of us who aren’t affected by this particular diagnosis get the chance to understand what it’s like just a little bit better.
I might have to say that Davis was my favorite character in the whole story, mostly because he’s the perfectly average love interest of our dreams. A teenage male who’s not model-handsome and has a variety of interests? Who fights his own internal battles without falling into a broody, Edward Cullen stereotype? Who RESPECTS WOMEN AND THEIR BOUNDARIES? I appreciate him.
Another of the most interesting characters is Daisy, Aza’s outspoken and offbeat best friend. The two are both similar and different in many ways that remind me of some of my own friendships. A significant leg of the plot arc hinges on Daisy’s hobby of writing Star Wars fanfiction, and while I’ve wondered how that aspect of the narrative will hold up over time, I’ve also come to the conclusion that some stories aren’t meant to be timeless so much as they’re meant to capture and preserve a specific moment in time.
As with many of my other favorite YA titles, Turtles exists in a world where a lot of happening at once: not just a love story. It’s a romance wrapped in a mystery that’s tied up with Aza’s coming of age. While there are so many out-of-the-ordinary things about her story, which will please you and stun you and intrigue you and shock you, it still feels like real life.
A commonality I’ve noticed across John’s books (I’m allowed to call him by his first name because I follow him on YouTube) is that their themes are usually tied to some small, interesting detail from real life (among larger plot events). I don’t know if these weird facts inspire his stories in any way, or if they’re just random pieces of knowledge he happens upon, but like the concept of real paper towns in Paper Towns and the famous last words in Looking for Alaska, Turtles has the tuatara—a real type of reptile that is the only surviving member of an extinct group of dinosaurs: basically, a living fossil. While the role of a dinosaur’s relative might seem random in a book about mysteries and mental illness, I interpreted it as a metaphor for the fact that despite massive changes and challenges in our lives, we can always figure out a way to continue on our path.
But here’s something to hold your interest: it’s not the turtle in the title. Something else inspired that, but you’ll just have to read it to find out what.
I don’t know if there are many other bodies of work, not characters, that I’m so invested in as John Green’s. He has a back catalog that I want to re-read, and you can bet I’ll be first in line for all his future novels too, because he writes characters that feel like real people whose joys and struggles you share as a reader. They have strengths and weaknesses, and you root for them because of the combination of both. They come alive and bring you into their world at the most critical moments in their stories, which feel like they extend beyond the pages of the book. (Books are magical. You better start to believe it if you’re hanging around this blog.) When it comes to Turtles in particular, I found myself wishing Aza the best through her bittersweet ending, which was open and yet resolved in the most satisfying of ways.
Rey approved.
