“... completely destroyed. The number of casualties is expected to rise...”

The flickering screen bathed the room in a blue glow. Its light was piercing in the darkness, and she really should turn the lamp on—no need to strain the eye she had left—but she couldn’t find the will. She couldn’t find the will for much of anything, these days.

“... at the center of the blast. What the Commanders were doing, and what caused the explosion, remains uncertain. Both Strike Commander Morrison and Commander Reyes are presumed dead.”

Ana didn’t move. Even though the hard mattress dug into her side, even though the blanket didn’t warm her chills, she was still as the dead—she was dead. The breaking news report played quietly, and she knew it was spreading across the world like wildfire. People would be shaken; people would be mourning. Her family would be mourning.

Something clenched horribly in her heart, and she curled in on herself. Maybe she could disappear.

The broadcast faded into the background, and all she could hear was the echo in her ears: Strike Commander Morrison and Commander Reyes are presumed dead.

Dead.

Ana found tears on her face and a tremble in her hands. She knotted her fingers together, holding them close, and let her tears wet the pillow.

But they didn’t know Jack and Gabriel. They didn’t know the men she loved. They didn’t know the men she left behind.

Ana smiled: minuscule, hollow, knowing, and full of pain. They wouldn’t die that easily. Not like her. She laid willingly in her grave; it was better for everyone. But Jack wouldn’t know how to die, and Gabriel would crawl out if it was the last thing he did.

An endless stream of tears spilled, and that smile quivered. She could sing, as she knew in her wretched heart they lived. But when could they rest?

When could they all rest?

Her eye closed. The murmur of a thousand voices drifted around Ana as she wept in joy and sorrow.

WHAT’S YOUR OTP FOR YOUR MUSE?: I don’t really have any OTP for Ana, as I don’t ship the canon Ana with anyone - roleplaywise, I ship solely based on chemistry with other muses and muns. I only have NOTPs (mainly characters who would be way too young for her or that I would consider flat out incompatible regardless of either of our interpretations), but as far as possibilities go: anything goes so long as the chemistry in writing is there. That being said, I like the idea/aesthetic of Ana76, ReaperAna, AnaCree, MoirAna and AnaHardt, but no real OTP. Always depends on muns/writers/artists and their take on it.

WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO RP WHEN IT COMES TO SHIPPING?: All the things really, as long as it remains coherent with our characters and the world they evolve in. I am not willing to soften or water down either of our characters for the sake of shipping and romantic fluff, as I think it wouldn’t do them justice. I like realism, so as long as we can articulate a ship without having to come up with domestic aus to make it work, or to keep it crack-only, I’m down for it! Other than that, I will rp most genres of threads and all and any situations - except non-consensual stuff, graphic smut, and the more obvious incest and underage ships. Those I absolutely won’t do.    (those are purely about romantic ships, of course when it comes to friendships, family ships, platonic ships etc anything goes and I love them lots)

HOW LARGE DOES THE AGE GAP HAVE TO BE TO MAKE IT UNCOMFORTABLE?: Ana is 60, so if she gets more ship there is a possibility that there will be a large age gap. However I can’t really see her with anyone younger than 35. 30 if the chemistry is really mind-blowing. Younger than that would be waaaay too much.

ARE YOU SELECTIVE WHEN SHIPPING?: Yes, I ship based on chemistry, and I’m a big ol’ fan of slow-burn and extensive plotting and discussion, so that involves some selectivity to make sure that the ship is benefitial for both our muses’ development and that we’re on the same page regarding what we expect and want from this ship.

HOW FAR DO STEAMY MOMENTS HAVE TO GO BEFORE THEY’RE CONSIDERED NS.FW?: If clothes go off or certain sexually-connotated body parts start to get involved, it’s probably time to whip out the nsfw tag for the kiddos.

WHO ARE OTHER MUSES YOU SHIP YOUR MUSE WITH?: Seeing that this blog has recently been remade, and some things have been reset to start afresh, my only official ship so far is slingerscng’s McCree. It’s a beautiful ship.

DOES ONE HAVE TO ASK TO SHIP WITH YOU?: Yes please, asking is a sine qua non condition.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU LIKE TO SHIP?: I like shipping, I like the idea of shipping, but as I said I’m a slow burner and I’m quite picky/selective. I’m much happier with few but high quality ships, than with lots of ships that don’t really go anywhere besides memes/asks.

ARE YOU SHIP OBSESSED OR SHIP MORE-OR-LESS?: Definitely ship-more-or-less, probably on the less side of things, but only because for the aforementioned reasons. I also really really love non-romantic ships. Those are too often overlooked in the tumblr community but are very very important to me for many reasons.

series: old soldiers, old love word count: 735 author’s notes: GOD i had this sitting like 80% finished for like a year. anyway here she is now. a lead up to a big multichapter fic i have planned, and a followup of sorts to left behind but u don’t like GOTTA read it. takes place in the reflections comic! enjoy!!

Ana grimaced out at the baking sand. They were safe for the moment—Jack blew her stakeout, damn him, but Talon would be scurrying to the shadows to lick their wounds. It would be a little while until their fingers reached into Cairo again, but only a little. Nothing ever truly sleeps.

At least it bought them time, and respite, both for the people here and for her. But with a lull came empty silence, taunting them with words gone unsaid.

Ana glanced over at Jack. It hadn’t been very long since they found each other again—and since Gabriel found them. Between fleeing the scene of the busted operation, finding refuge, and swapping intel, there hadn’t been time to truly talk... until now.

Six years apart; six years of presumed dead and wondering where it all went wrong. Sometimes, in her dreary haze, Ana had dreamed of reuniting with the men she loved. It would play like a silent film, distant and unreal, an indulgence that proved more cruel in the end. Here's your fool fantasy, she thought bitterly: Gabriel tried to kill them, and Ana and Jack were sitting on opposite ends of a bare-bones room, pointedly trying to ignore their ghosts and the date.

That morning, December 25th lighting up her holopad had been a punch in the gut. Neither she nor Jack celebrated Christmas in their own right, but it had a special place. Others in their family loved it, and loved to share it; and a day of gift giving and cuddling in ugly sweaters wasn’t so bad.

Gabriel loved Christmas, she thought.

Ana sighed quietly, and shifted, painfully aware of the loneliness in the room. Being by herself, she could handle. Being with Jack, with so much to say that the words wouldn’t come, was unbearable.

“Disengage, Ana!” She remembered Jack’s voice over her comm like it was yesterday. “That’s an or—“

She hadn’t allowed him his last words to her, before rushing to greet her death. The echo of it hung heavy between them.

Jack sighed too, and rubbed his face tiredly. He was still gazing at that photograph, on print, between his fingers; what it was, Ana could only guess.

She cracked open her dry mouth, and then closed it again. Trying to shape anything between them further than strategy was like gazing at rubble, pieces of something splintered unrecognizably. Jack must have been just as lost, otherwise he wouldn’t be so quiet. He had never been particularly quiet. But then again, neither had she. A humourless smile flitted across her lips—how empty they’ve become. She wondered if Gabriel felt the same.

The atmosphere was so utterly crushing, she almost wanted to leave the room, even if it was only a temporary escape of inevitable discomfort. But... Jack was here. Jack was here—and she had been alone for so long. She guessed from the lines on his face that he’d been lonely, too. Her old heart ached, because oh, she loved him. She loved them both.

Jack glanced up at her, and Ana realized she had been staring. For a moment, blue eyes held brown—longing, and apprehensive, and Ana didn't have to wonder if Jack still loved them too. Part of her wanted to scoff; why wallow and pine when they could do something about it? She could march over there right now and hold him, kiss him.

But it was so much, so soon. Their history was long, their lives together in shambles, and so they remained in uneasy liminity; neither daring to speak nor move.

Ana took a breath. In an act of bravery—or cowardice—she stood. Jack’s eyes didn't leave her face, nervous and questioning.

“Maintenance,” she murmured, grabbing her rifle and kit. Truly, her rifle hardly needed any attention at the moment, but anything was better than this feeling like suffocation.

Jack looked like he could sag in relief. “Good idea.”

He folded his photo away as she did her memories. She opened her kit while Jack fetched his own gear, and narrowed her focus. For now, they could fill the void between them with the smell of grease, and busy unsure hands with steel. Maybe they could stave off the many, many conversations to be had, without the isolation that had been eating away at them. At least for today, Ana thought—just to get through today.

I am currently holding out on canon for McReyes/McReaper because I have no idea what their relationship was-I am currently reading it as a father/son/mentor figure thing and that isn't my jam but if canon josses that I am onboard. how often I play them

Pretty often, actually! She’s one of my mains, and my top choice for competitive if we need a second healer, and I play her a lot on quickplay too to keep my aim sharp and just get a better sense of positioning around the maps. I’ve got 39 hours logged on her in QP and she was one of the main heroes that I played in the last competitive season (which I only played towards the end tbh) so I’m really nervous about the nerf they gave her because IDK if she’ll be so great of a choice. And people already yell at you for choosing her on PS4 so at least my Mercy skills are pretty good :’)

which maps I like to use them on

Practically all of them. I tend to try and practice a character that I main on all maps so I have a better sense of positioning and strategy over time, but I think the ones that I’ve gotten the most comfortable with are Dorado on defense, Hanamura on both sides, and Volskaya on both sides.

who I ship them with

I love me some Ana and Soldier 76, based on their interactions in game, and ReaperAna, but most of all I love me some Old Soldiers with Jack, Gabe, & Ana as the ultimate OT3 back in the golden days of Overwatch. @warhybris​, @untombed​, and I have discussed them a lot and I really love the dynamic we thought up between the three of them, and the thread we currently have going that I reaaally need to reply to. I know the popular ship is Ana and Reinhardt, and like on a fundamental level it’s not bad persay, but the way fandom treats it, and how they treat Ana both in relation to the ship, and as a character in general has left a sour taste in my mouth about shipping them. Yeah their one interaction is cute, but they literally only have like two interactions together, and if we’re going to ship characters based off in game interactions then why has no one talked about the 6+ voice lines and interactions between her and Jack, and how Jack has more interactions with her daughter and is always bringing up Ana to her. But I’ll leave that salt for another time.
