Ghoul!Minhyuk

Minhyuk,,,, isn’t so innocent as the ghoul community likes to put off

He’s the type of ghoul to eat live humans rather than resort to finding dead bodies that would hardly keep him from the brink of starvation every month or so

But, like all ghouls, he does love coffee

There’s a *certain* coffee shop that he frequents only when he’s feeling a bit peckish, too

He knows those cubes are meant for ghouls, and he asks for two in his black coffee

But that’s not where he meets you

It’s as surprising to him as it is you - the way you meet

You, in your own life, your own storyline - you have a new friend named Riyou

You met him at college, and have spent a lot of time with him this semester - so much, that you trust him completely. He’s been in your apartment a couple of times, eats lunch with you, and stays in those little study rooms goofing off with you on late nights when school is overwhelming

So,,, you’re scared when he pulls a 180 over you, revealing his true nature in a rather merciless, frightening way

“All those kids who ‘drop out’ or stop coming to school...You know I was friends with them, too...Until I got hungry”

You’re teary eyed, and you can’t even find the will to throw your house keys at him as a split second procrastination of your impending death

It’s dark, hardly any stars in the sky, and the streetlamps give an ominous vibe as your seconds run out

It’s,,, not how you want to die at all;

Minhyuk never has and never will claim property or territory in any town he inhabits

He thinks ghouls who do are full of themselves and just itching for a fight most days

He senses Riyou - even knows him

Everyone seems to know him,,, he’s ruthless and is known as the College Co-Ed Ghoul. He uses college and university as a cover up to get his meals,,, and likes playing with them, too

Normally, Minhyuk wouldn’t bat an eye against Riyou. Every ghoul has their MO, that’s just his

But,,, while he can sense Riyou, he can also sense you

Death is always a terrible and frightening thing for humans, and the smell of spiked adrenaline and fear is no different with you, but ---

Minhyuk comes across the very scene where Riyou is taunting you in front of your own apartment door. Whether or not you were inside didn’t matter, as if a door could stop any ghoul…

But somehow, just actually standing there, watching the scene play out, Minhyuk feels a dagger to his chest

Before he knows it, his kagune pop out from his lower back

Riyou may like to tease, taunt, and kill innocent college kids - but Riyou is all bark and no bite. He’s weak. He takes too much time inbetween his games, leaving him hanging in the balance most months

“Hey!”

Minhyuk is the one known for his dazzling smile and upbeat attitude despite being what he is

But he was born that way,,,, so naturally he has instinct flooding his brain too,

You’re more important right now

Riyou takes one look at Minhyuk - the Minhyuk known for repeatedly escaping CCG with ease and having an ability to defend like no other

He’s known for his agility and grace, and sturdy kagune

So Riyou just simply growls, trying to tell Minhyuk to back off, but Minhyuk doesn’t take that b.s for a second

“Let her go, Riyou. She’s mine now.”

“Are you that hungry?! Leave me be!”

“Do you really want a fight tonight?”

That question hangs in the air as Riyou curses and glares you in the eye before jumping up to the roof in one bound. You can’t even hear him leave, but you know he’s gone. The air feels just a bit lighter,,, until you realize another one of them had just taken his place.

Seeing the space between you - about fifty feet - you immediately slam into your door, jamming in the key before locking the door behind you.

It’s dark in the apartment, and your breathing echos so loud you know he can hear it.

He’s there, behind the door.

There’s a gentle knock, and you nearly scream

Instead, you’re left shell shocked, completely rigid as you whimper and fall to the floor, sitting against the door, waiting for him to come in as he pleases to take your life

“Please don’t kill me! Please, I don’t want to die!”

A ringing in your ears continues until you hear Minhyuk’s voice. He doesn’t show any signs of beating down your door or breaking through a window

“I won’t,,, I just wanted you to be safe. Riyou’s stubborn, so he’ll hang around. So..I’ll be around too. I’ll guard you until he let’s go.”

Minhyuk doesn’t know why he’s saying such greasy comforting words to a human

Especially when he himself is almost due for a meal

But his voice is still soft, and his eyes lull as he turns around to sit against the front door

You couldn’t possibly know he was mimicking you in that moment, but after hearing his words, you fall into a shocked silence, realizing you’re not going to die

You swear it takes almost an hour to get back up - you haven’t heard anything from beyond the door.

Through the night, you constantly look at your window, expecting to see your traitor of a friend

All your life you’ve been on the fence about ghouls - you can understand that some of them don’t mean to kill, they just literally have to survive - but you also can’t bring yourself to think it’s okay to be picking off humans randomly, one by one - or by the dozen

However, you’re not that fond of the CCG - it just seems like another play on power for the government. It’s cold, and cruel.

The next day you wake up, and don’t even leave the house. You peek outside at noon to see if there were any signs of that ghoul from last night, but you can see nothing

You take it as a good sign, for now

Once night hits, you’re a mess. You keep occupied by texting family and friends. You don’t know if you should tell them about the ghoul,,, because then the CCG will be involved. They always are

At around eleven pm, you’re in your pajamas, wondering if you should check outside

There’s horrible flashes of Riyou’s face that keeps the lock in place

So you knock quietly,,, hoping that maybe,,, the ghoul would still be there - protecting you even though you know you shouldn’t be spared if anyone else would have to die in your place

There’s a soft knock in response,,, causing you to gasp a bit as you realize he indeed is still there

“Are...you the ghoul from last night?” You ask, just to make sure

“Yes..” It’s muffled from the door, but you are so relieved

You can see your kitchen, and your coffee machine,,,,

“Do you want some coffee?” You ask hesitantly, suddenly wondering if you sound dumb or naive to be talking to a creature like that

“That’d be...nice.” His answer takes awhile

You first start to brew the coffee, letting it start as you move back to the door, cracking it open despite your worst fears of being eaten flashing in the back of your mind

You see the ghoul upclose for the first time. Even last night, his stature was hidden from the bright fear and the backlighting of the streetlamp

Minhyuk is surprised that you dared crack open your door, but calmly looked up at you as he turns around. He’s sitting on the porch steps.

“You can come in if you want.”

His eyes are normal - like most ghoul’s are. I guess it’s just always been engrained into your head that ghouls are a living nightmare - those eyes, those tendrils, those human killing hands -

“Aren’t you afraid?” His voice still remains quiet, soft

You breathe as if you’re being crushed, “Of course I am, but you’re...helping me and it’s cold...Or...can’t ghouls feel temperature? I don’t know..”

When Minhyuk stands, you immediately cower a bit into your apartment, but shake it off as he slowly approaches the door. You open it for him and close it behind you

“It smells nice in here,” He sighs as he takes a seat at your kitchen table.

“Oh, the coffee?”

Minhyuk wants to say no,,, that it’s you, your scent that’s nice - but just as his mouth opens to make the sly remark, he stops himself. It could be taken as a way that he would want to eat you - and he doesn’t want to scare you

But yes he can also feel his rc blood cells ramping up the pace inside his body. His stomach almost growls but he withholds it, knowing he can withstand another night without food

After the coffee is made, there is surprisingly a calm and quiet conversation between you two

He asks you about Riyou

At first you freeze up just thinking about him - how nice he was, how funny, and caring he was towards you in that time. Only to turn around at the end of the semester, just as you thought you possibly felt something during that time -

It makes you shiver to no end, but your voice is steady as you explain just that

Minhyuk adds on with caution that Ryou is known around this area for baiting college kids

You want to ask what kind of people he preys on then...but you think that would not only be incredibly rude, but that it would make him put his hunger on you instead

“Don’t worry about Riyou.” He suddenly gulps out after a stretch of silence envelopes the entire apartment for too long. You’re head pops up in question. Minhyuk looks you in the eyes, and they look so normal, and even...kind�� “He never goes back to failed prey. Once he realizes that I’m here and you’re still alive...He’ll suspect that the CCG is involved, and will skip town.”

Minhyuk sounds like he knows Riyou’s pattern well

And while you’re thankful,, you’re mind still will forever wonder who is and who isn’t a ghoul around you. You wish you could tell.

“Thanks...I was scared of going back to school. I have class tomorrow.”

“I can go with you” Minhyuk blurts before he thinks

“...Sure. It’s just two classes, anyways. Thank you for offering, maybe we can get coffee on the way back.”

Minhyuk smiles freely at the mention of it. He thinks it’s thoughtful of you to offer coffee - the only thing he can survive off of that isn’t horrifying

You look at Minhyuk’s smile and think for a second that someone so radiating at midnight couldn’t be so dangerous and mean.

The next day at school people seemed to look at you a lot more

Even the really popular kids - but you also noticed that Minhyuk would stiffen and come in closer to your side when those kids looked

You wondered,,, if that was because they were ghouls, too.

In your first class, everyone stared. As the two hours passed you don’t know what Minhyuk did, but at your hour break, he was sitting in the chair across the hall, keeping an eye on you.

In your second class, a person asked if he was your boyfriend. The question wasn’t absurd as it came from a friend, but you just brushed it off, saying no, he wasn’t

On your way to the coffee shop, Minhyuk made a sly, yet upbeat comment as his grin widened childishly

“So,,, I look like your boyfriend, huh?”

“W-What - ?!”

“That’s what people keep asking you, isn’t it?”

“Well...one person did”

“Hm...I haven’t thought about dating a human. You know it’s rather hard to have offspring-”

“Dfsktjl - okay, okay! Um - Minhyuk -”

You’re a bit embarrassed, but you two make it to the coffee shop he picked out. You always noticed people were in here, but you never would have thought the friendly and even shy staff were...ghouls

Until Minhyuk told you, that is

He plucked a cube out of his coffee that was soft and falling from his fingers

“It’s a ghoul and human friendly environment. Where we can mingle and see each other in a normal, domestic setting...Isn’t it...nice?”

You don’t know what to say. You know ghouls try to blend in with humans, but you are taught that’s just because they’re trying to evade capture from the people they hate the most. What the government praises.

You never thought it was because ghouls actually like humans. Think they’re cute, and humane, and interesting

Ghouls,,, want to be normal, too

“I know not every ghoul is a bloodthirsty killer...in fact, the ones I’ve met now I think are pretty nice…”

“Would you date a ghoul, even if you knew who they were?”

Every instinct and part of you wants to say no. Even if they can be nice and kind...they’re still different and they still kill your own kind

But if Riyou would have held out longer you couldn’t deny that you would want to be with him. You used to love just being in the same room as him up until a few days ago

Minhyuk’s the same,,, right now you really enjoy his company, and find him warm and nice - and he even saved your life

But you wonder if and when he will turn on you, too

“I can’t say...I really liked Riyou until he was about to kill me. I just...don’t want to trust another ghoul like that and be scared for the day that they finally decide that they would rather have something to eat instead.”

Minhyuk has always understood, from the night he saw Riyou. He knew you would forever be fragile with new friendships, because anyone could be a ghoul, but-

He doesn’t want to hide like that. He wants to be open and still be able to be okay in the eyes of the people he likes

“I understand,,, It’s just that you’re the first human in a while to even keep my company. All of my other friends are...well, ghouls.”

“Well,,,” You stutter, “I like you, Minhyuk. I mean, you saved my life...but right now, I think I just want to get the rest of the semester done with before I can decide anything. I’m still scared…”

“I know,,, but for now, can I still visit with you sometimes? Maybe we can get to know each other more as the semester goes on...and then you can decide”

That’s how Minhyuk becomes the second ghoul you first befriend,,, and then slowly start to like more and more

You try not to show it, knowing it’ll be obvious

You try to just study and take a notebook overflowing with notes for finals

But when finals are over you have no more excuses

You’re with Minhyuk,,, and he asks you how you feel

But before you can even start to confess the triage of mixed feelings, Minhyuk continues with telling you that he really likes you, and asks you to reconsider him as just a friend

He makes all these promises - promises that he will never let you see him feed and will even take a job at that coffee shop that only takes dead bodies -

But you tell him he doesn’t need to do any of that stuff just to try and be with you

You tell him how you feel, trying to keep it slow and steady

But Minhyuk’s smile keeps growing as he knows he’s overcame your personal fear with genuine kindness and compassion

He kisses you right there, as you finish your confession and look into his eyes.

And even though you tell him not to go through with troubling standards,,,

He still gets a job at Anteiku, and introduces you to his new friends

It becomes just another part of your life, and you’re not scared anymore as the months pass

Because Minhyuk will always protect you,,,
