Rashad Basri is a dark-skinned agender person with perpetually-messy wavy black hair that is kept about jaw-length (chin-length during rough patches). They tend to keep a five-o-clock shadow. I've described them before as being a bit on the gaunt side, tall and lean, with an angular face, a hooked nose, and deep set, almost black eyes. There tends to be a sadness to the set of their features, I think

The Final Run: Rashad Basri

Rashad Basri is my oldest Sidestep. My original, my main Sidestep, as it were. They're the entire reason behind my username (that and a silly Firefly reference). That being said, they have gone through several changes throughout the years.

The very first iteration of Rashad was immediately after my first run of Rebirth. I was new to the Interactive Fiction medium and, as such, I approached Rebirth quite like a video game. I randomized a name and made choices as I would have in those circumstances. As soon as I finished it, I knew I wanted to dedicate a few runs with actual characters. There were four main ways you could approach the museum, so I decided I would have four Sidesteps. Rashad was the first.

Rashad 1.0 was pretty close to the Sidestep we see presented to us in the canon: snarky, cynical, haunted and hunted and just trying to get to the next phase of their life. Their first scar, like most 'steps of the time, was Outsider. They wanted to destroy their past, move on. This was also a Rashad who had flirted with Ortega, who flirted with Mortum, who was more interested 

I made multiple runs for them, each time chipping away at little things to make them more, well, them. They became more reserved, more cautious, someone who regularly thought things through and made moves based on strategy.

A template made by in July 2019 of Rashad's then stats and info, no longer accurate and complete with amateur art.

Then I went on hiatus from the fandom. I’m sure those who were around for it can guess why.

Retribution dropped at a perfect time for me. I was nearing the end of an incredibly stressful ordeal and getting back to FHR felt like…well, it felt like coming home. I loaded up my old saves and immediately wanted to beat past me with a stick. Rashad had five saves, all of them named in the worst possible ways, and I had no way of remembering what they’d done.

So I ran Rebirth with them again. This time, I filled out the places I’d shaved off them when I’d been making them softer. This version we’ll be seeing, scene by scene, in this Final Run is the culmination of all that I’ve done with them. Rashad’s been a character who’s been with me a little upwards of five years and they’ve been through as much and changed as much as I have in that time. I'm excited to share my thoughts with you all!

Name Meaning:

🚗-Driving

Rashad......is a passable driver by LD standards. Which means no one should ever ride with them ever. They're more accustomed to a motorcycle than a car, but can comfortably drive either when needed. They tend to weave between traffic in a way that upsets people.

💋 - Kissing

No dice on this one. They're not a bad kisser, per se, just inexperienced. Passionate, when the mood strikes them. They're a quick learner, though, so no worries. They'll pick it up eventually.

23. What emotion is the hardest for your OC to process? How about express? (Rashad)

Going to say anger is the hardest for them to process. They've spent so long biting back their anger and frustration that when it does manifest, they just don't know what to do with it. It tends to manifest in lashing out mid-conversation, particularly at Ricardo who too often pushes them too far.

As far as expression, I think desire. Wanting something, especially in regards to their own self-based wants, tends to wind up on the back burner and often neglected. It's why Ricardo was never sure if they were flirting and why Chen had to gauge whether they were interested during the coffee date.

25. What is your favorite thing about your OC? (Mateo)

My favorite thing about Mateo is actually the depth of loneliness he has buried underneath the amount of luxury social ties. Like, he's built this empire around himself of nice housing, expensive clothing, luxury foods, and high status connections to hide the fact that he barely feels like he's here anymore.

I think I'm managing to make the most compelling version of Rashad, if I'm honest.

Ricardo knows there's something very wrong with what's going on with them, that they're likely the face behind the fanged mirror, but cannot do anything to stop it. Every time he tries to reach out, Rashad slips through his fingers. Further and further out of his grasp. They always come back, but always shy away when they get too close.

Rashad knows Ricardo will try to stop them. They are diametrically opposed in the means to their ends. Ricardo can't even be allowed to know their ends because he will want in and he can't because he will die if he tries. They know this is a suicide mission. Most just causes are. So they push him away. To save his life, save his heart. Can't mourn them if he never got more reasons to mourn. Right?

Rashad and Ricardo are a tragic romance that never was. They flirted and spoke and laughed into the night and shared a couch for a movie and patched each other up after fights. Intimacy after intimacy, only touching in moments stolen. They were closer to each other than anyone ever was to either.

And then they were stolen away. Months of mourning, two people locked within four walls, kept placated by drugs and booze respectively. Years go by and they are haunted both by what could and couldn't have been all at once. Slowly they pick themselves up piece by piece and move on, both irrevocably altered by the effect they've had on the other.

And now they've crashed into each other again, exhuming long buried emotions, but both have come back different. They're on different courses, walking different paths. They will collide but never in the same way as they used to. Too burdened by the weight of their scars. They're too late to save each other, but they were always too late to save each other, and maybe they always will be, too.

Regardless, neither will stop trying.

Oh, gods, you've broken my scale of "weird little things I don't really need to know about my OCs". Ok, um. Hm.

Sidesteps:

Seongwon - Starting a fight to get pineapple pizza added to the order. Anathema talked her into trying it and she rather likes it. Gets annoyed when people make a fuss about it. It's a pizza order and she's hungry.

Remus - Sweet tooth from hell. Like, his vice is alcohol, but it manifests as those fruity cocktails that are mostly simple syrup, so sweets is a close second. Adding pineapple on pizza just means extra sugar to balance out the pizza sauce. He's stolen the whole box on pizza nights at Rangers HQ.

Rashad - Never had it. It's traditionally served with ham and Rashad tries to eat halal when they can.

Corin - Aggressively ambivalent. High key hates eating, anyway, and would live off of meal replacement shakes and filler calorie drinks if Julia wouldn't harass him for it. Adding pineapple to pizza is going to neither improve nor degrade a pizza for him because it was always going to be wretched anyway.

Mateo - Personally dislikes it, but he's not going to make a fuss about it. There's probably enough other pizza to go around. In the situation that there's only pineapple pizza (which, let's be honest, is an Anathema or Ortega prank), he's picking off each piece and flicking it at the prankster.

Cassian - Has tackled Anathema to rip the phone out of her hand when ordering pizza to keep her from ordering pineapple pizza. Mostly for the bit, but also because they hate the smell of Hawaiian pizza. Ortega tried to talk him into trying a bite and got a kick to the gut.

Detectives:

Isaac - The things he puts on pizza upsets Tina and Verda. He's actually banned from placing pizza orders for the group. Pineapple on pizza would be a mercy comparatively. But, yeah, he likes it.

Julian - Hates the texture of pineapple, but likes the flavor. He's tried to experiment with how to impart pineapple flavor to pizza without physically putting pineapple on it. It's not gone well.

Raine - Doesn't like pineapple on pizza, but also doesn't like when people are assholes about others' eating preferences. He'll order Hawaiian pizza just to spite someone being loud about hating it. He'll even eat a few slices for good measure.

Oh, man, I've been hoping someone asks me song questions! I'm a big nerd for music, lyrics, and symbolism. Rashad had two whole playlists that I need to clean up and consolidate: Speaker for the Dead (their personal and villainous playlist) and Four Knights Game (a playlist analyzing the trajectory of the relationships between Rashad, Wei, Ricardo, and their puppet Xiao).

I've already briefly mentioned Dangerous by Son Lux on my recap of Rashad's origins (though I'd be happy to expand upon it, if you're interested). So I'd like to pull what I feel is one of the most Rashad-esque song off of Four Knights Game: De Selby (Part 2) by Hozier.

The themes of running from your anxieties and wishing for nonexistance juxtaposed against the comfort of someone you love and trust, who sees you and might could understand you, and the sweet rending asunder as both sides pull you is such a peak Rashad story. Paired with that low bass and the longing croon of Hozier's voice feels tonally aesthetic to them.

🎁What is something they keep like: a souvenir, a keepsake, or a family heirloom; that means a lot to them? Why is it so important to them? (Wheel Says Mateo)

Mateo keeps a few things that remind him of his old life, but are not actually from before the Heartbreak Incident. Cheap snacks eaten in cornerstores with friends. An old console with couch co-op games that he can't play anymore, because there are no neighborhood teens from the little street he spent learning about humanity beyond the Farm.

He has a necklace that stayed in his locker as he went back to the Farm. It used to hold a crucifix that he tossed out when Ricardo gave it back to him. He kept the saint pendant, though, out of nostalgia and a caustic sense of humor. It's of San Judas Tadeo, patron saint of hope and impossible causes. Along the bottom it reads, ruega por nosotros.

But, mostly, what he's kept as a tie to the old woman who took him in from his first escape from the Farm is his name. She always told him he was a gift from God, so he took a name to reflect that.
