Remote Contextual Inquiry: A Technique to Improve Enterprise Software
Notes from an article by Lynn Rampol (quotes in italic)
Enterprise software? Large-scale software deployments to large number of end users
- Software customisations: 1) change text, layout, behabiour of delivered features; 2) remove features; 3) build own functionality
- System configurations: customers amend how software performs dependent on setup
- User roles: different users have different fuctionality dependent on their system-defined roles
- User preference: personalise interface attributes
- Default data: pre-populated forms set up for end users dependent on their roles
- Domain knowledge: people using it often have deep knowledge / experience in their field
- Training: in-person product training, web-based / email instruction, FAQs or cheat sheets
People to be tested: business analyst & end user
Business analyst, things to ask:
Customizations that have been made and the reasons for making the changes
Known issues with using the software (possibly from internal Customer Support records)
Rough statistical information about the number of users and descriptions of user types
Domain expertise of users and typical duration of employment
The business process that the software supports
The tasks performed with the software, frequency of task performance, and variables, such as calendar-driven tasks (e.g., quarterly or annual tasks) and event-driven tasks (e.g., approvals or sales orders)
Corporate standards, such as monitor resolution settings and supported browsers
Information about training methods and materials provided to users
Plans for software upgrades
Access to end users for further research
Software end users, things to ask:
Information about their goals and the tasks performed to accomplish those goals
Measurement of task performance data, including task completion time and the number of mouse clicks to perform a task
Feedback on layout, content, and behavior in the user interface
Personalization or individual-level customizations made to the software
Background on the type and effectiveness of the training they received
Remote contextural Inquiry
Captures the computer screen of a person working with their version of the software on their own computer.
- Record the session (Camtasia?)
- Completes typical tasks & talks aloud while doing it
Why? 1) observe and record the actual software being used; 2) gather information of real-life tasks relevant to that end user; and 3) probe and discuss the end user’s interaction with her system.
Tips
As the first step in any UCD effort, you need to understand the target markets for your product so that you can obtain representative data from appropriate market segments.
This technique applies to software that is already deployed to a customer base. In enterprise software markets, that may mean collecting data on software that is one or more versions old. The pros and cons of this technique must be weighed against a more traditional usability method.
Some customers may deal with highly sensitive information and may not want you to make video recordings of their interactions. As is typical in our field, you must always ask and receive permission to record audio or video with your participants.
It must be clear to the customer where the recorded information will go, how you plan to use it, and any next steps.
It is helpful for researchers to understand the functionality of the product that they are viewing so that users do not have to explain the basics.
This technique is not a full contextual inquiry. The UE professional will not be seeing the person’s desk area or other external influences using this method. However, supplemental documentation could be gathered to further understand the environment. For example, a researcher could request that the user take a few pictures of her work area, desk, and surroundings.
---
Note (not from the article):
Process is broken into 3 parts
1. Identifying users
At least 6 people, for different user groups (2 of each). Consider budget.
2. Scheduling and conducting visits
People may be reluctant about time needed - communicate clearly the benefits, expectations (ie observations). Prepare consent forms, scripts & recording equipment prior. 2 visits a day (allow time to write notes and understand what’s been learnt)
3. Analysing data
Spreadsheet, card sort or programs (NVIVO / Dedoose / Reframer). Create personas / scenarios to communicate the findings. Service map / service blueprint may be required

Note #4: Impression - The Three Coffins by John Dickson Carr
Written in 1935, The Three Coffins is often considered to be John Dickson Carr’s masterpiece in locked room mystery. Seeing that I also really love his The Unicorn Murder novel, I decided to give this one a try.
My overall impression is that it reads more like a mechanical puzzle than an actual story. Detective genre is well known for its solvable puzzle aspect, but this whole novel takes it up a notch with how dry its dialogues and scenes are. The cast themselves barely feels like a human and more like chess piece, and the main trio Dr. Fell, Hudley and Rampole are very stereotypical.
What caught my interest the most was the lecture on locked room mystery placed in chapter 17, and it is something that I will revisit another time.
A few ideas that come up to my mind while reading:
While reading it, part of me felt like the novel didn’t appeal to me much because it has little emotional tension; everything is cut and dried. Yet, how exactly should I define the concept of human’s emotion as well as its significance in a detective novel?
Its overly mechanical aspect is my least favorite thing about it. So it also gave birth to a new question in my head: what makes one detective novel more mechanical over another?
What classifies one story as whodunnit, whydunnit or howdunnit over others? I don’t know how to pinpoint the exact differences yet since a detective fiction often contains all 3 elements together, but I do know that I tend to prever whodunnit and whydunnit over howdunnit.
I should examine these ideas in detail later on...

Seeing health ‘opportunities’ in post-pandemic Papua New Guinea: a UN Resident Coordinator blog – UN News
UN Resident Coordinator Gianluca Rampolla believes that the public health communications and system strengthening, undertaken during the outbreak of the virus in PNG, will help to put the “local health system on a better platform to combat future pandemics.”
Ahead of World Immunization Week which begins on 24 April, he explains why.
“On Friday, I received my first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. It is incredible to think that in a little over a year since the WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic, a vaccine has been developed and is being administered here in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
Of course, I am in Port Moresby and am receiving my vaccine at a private hospital. Ensuring vaccines are available to communities around the country will be the true test.
Reaching remote communities
I have been fortunate during my time in PNG to be able to travel to some of the planet’s most unique and vulnerable landscapes. When I travel, I am constantly reminded of just how remote some communities in PNG truly are.
North Fly is an area in PNG’s Western Province, bordering Indonesia. The area was one of the first to report cases of COVID and now has one of the highest counts of COVID-19 cases in the country.
It is also home to some of the most difficult-to-reach communities in the region and hosts asylum seekers. Some riverside communities are entirely inaccessible during the dry season.
Tumblr media
UN Papua New Guinea/Rachel Donovan
UN Resident Coordinator in Papua New Guinea, Gianluca Rampolla, receives the COVID-19 vaccine .
At the start of the pandemic, I visited Rumginae Hospital, a referral hospital about an hour’s drive from the region’s major town of Kiunga, to speak with Dr Kevin Pondikou – the hospital’s only doctor – and his staff.  Dr Kevin showed us the storerooms which were running low on personal protective equipment (PPE). A new diagnostic machine was sitting in a box because travel restrictions meant the technician had not been able to travel to install it.
A few weeks after this visit, colleagues from UNFPA returned to Rumginae. A young woman came in suffering from shock. She had delivered a baby three weeks earlier in her village without a midwife or any medical support.  Bleeding heavily, she and her mother walked for close to one day to reach the aid post at Mougolou, from where she was airlifted to Kiunga and then brought to Rumginae where she received a blood transfusion.
Healthcare providers like the team at Rumginae were stretching their resources to treat patients even before a surge in cases in February 2021. Preventing severe complications from COVID is vital to keeping this hospital open.
Vaccine Equity
We have received 132,000 vaccines through the COVAX Facility. Despite the incredible achievement in bringing a vaccine to so many developing countries within such a short time, this shipment arrived too late for the 91 people, including one of our colleagues, who had died from COVID-19 in PNG up until mid-April. [see the WHO COVID-19 dashboard here for the latest figures]
Tumblr media
© UNICEF/Vatava Media
The first delivery of COVID-19 vaccines from the COVAX Facility arrives in Papua New Guinea.
Additionally, that shipment contained less than half of the 288,000 vaccines that PNG was originally assigned. We need to push for better distribution of vaccines to the most vulnerable.
And that doesn’t end with a photo op at Port Moresby’s Jacksons Airport. It ends when every person in this half island nation of 7.4 million has been given the choice to get the vaccine.
Focusing on opportunities
Reaching communities like Rumginae is of course a major challenge, but an achievable one. In 2018, WHO and UNICEF vaccinated 3.1 million children against polio within only a few months of an outbreak being announced.
The challenge we have on our hands with COVID is that the virus and the vaccine are new, leading to significant skepticism and vaccine hesitancy. As more young people are connected to the internet, vaccine conspiracy spreads like wildfire. Rumors reach these communities before we can.
However, to focus on the scale of this challenge ignores the opportunities. The public health information we share now – on how a virus is spread and on how vaccines work – sets us and the local health system on a better platform to combat future pandemics.
We are building a vocabulary that will help us tackle existing challenges like TB and HIV/AIDS.
Passing the test
Funding to the COVID response has enabled IOM and UNICEF to build water facilities in North Fly, and to support the districts most vulnerable.
We have also demonstrated, at the regional and global level, that PNG has friends all over the world who are ready and willing step up to support. Development partners and the private sector have donated tonnes of PPE, testing kits and lab consumables, medical devices and personnel, and vaccines.
This pandemic is testing our capacity for cooperation and I believe it is a test we will pass”.
The UN Resident Coordinator, sometimes called the RC, is the highest-ranking representative of the UN development system at the country level. In this occasional series, UN News is inviting RCs to blog on issues important to the United Nations and the country where they serve.

Did you know of these 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sitesin Rajasthan?!
We’ve all heard so much about so many UNESCO World Heritage Sites that we have stopped wondering about what they actually are. Before we can delve into the top contenders in Rajasthan, let us first understand what being a World Heritage Site entails!
What is a World Heritage Site?
Simply speaking, it is a landmark that is selected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, better known as UNESCO. The landmark is supposed to have cultural, historical, scientific, or other forms of significance, and once listed as a Heritage Site, is legally protected by international treaties.
The World Heritage Sites of Rajasthan
Rajasthan is a royal, princely, majestic, historical, and mysterious state in India; which makes it obvious that it would be home to a huge number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Without further ado, let us jump in into the list of some of the best Heritage Sites in Rajasthan that are always worth a visit:
Chittorgarh Fort
Tumblr media
A symbol of the Rajput spirit, Chittorgarh Fort is set atop a 180 m high hill and covers an area of 240 hectares. Its formidable location made the for virtually invincible.
The fort has featured in a number of tales that speak of courage, romance, and pride, and have been sung by bards for centuries now.
According to history, the construction of this fort was started by ChitrangadaMaurya and is also considered to be the place where a number of royal women committed Jauhar (self-immolation) when the fort was under siege by AlauddinKhilji, a Muslim invader.
The fort is home to a number of monuments. A one-kilometre long road takes visitors through seven gates before they reach Rampol (the gate of Ram), and the main entrance to the fort is from the Surajpol (Sun Gate).
Kumbhalgarh Fort
Tumblr media
This fort is best known for being the birthplace of Maharana Pratap, the legendary king of Mewar.
Kumbhalgarh is located at a distance of 84 km from Udaipur, and is considered as being the second most important citadel in the Mewar region, right after Chittorgarh.
The fort, cradled in the Aravallis was built in the 15th century AD by Rana Kumbha. The inaccessibility and hostility of the topography made it quite hard to breach for invaders in the olden times, and the fort became a refuge for the rulers of Mewar when strife struck the kingdom.
The fort houses a magnificent array of temples that were built by the Mauryas. And the most picturesque place in the fort is the BadalMahal, also known as the palace of the clouds.
The forthas a massive wall that stretches for about 36 km,and is wide enough foreight horses to travel abreast on the wall.
 Ranthambore Fort
Tumblr media
Located in SawaiMadhopur, Ranthambore is not just well-known for the national park that it houses. The Park also has within its premises, Ranthambore Fort, which is a monument that speaks of the glory and valour of the Chauhan Dynasty.
The Ranthambore Fort was built by the Chauhan rulers in varying time periods, from the 9th to the 13th century. The park itself used to be a hunting ground for the rulers, until the time India got independence.
In Ranthambore Fort, there are three Hindu temples as well that are dedicated to Lord Ganesh, Shiva, and Ramlalaji, respectively. They were constructed in the 12th and 13th centuries, and use red Karauli stone. Lord Sumatinath (the 5th Jain Tirthankar) and Lord Sambhavanath also have a Jain temple in the premises.
Gagron Fort
Tumblr media
One of the most popular tourist destinations in the town of Jhalawar, the Gagron Fort is a fine example of a ‘jal’ and ‘van’ durg.
It is one of the forts of Rajasthan that have made it to the World Heritage Site list.
The fort is surrounded by the Ahu and Kali Sindh rivers on three sides, while the fourth used to be covered by a moat.
There is also a beautiful mausoleum of the Sufi saint,Mitheshah, located nearby, in the fort’s boundary wall.
Amer Fort
Tumblr media
Located about 11 km away from the city of Jaipur, the Amer Fort is one of the most well-known tourist destinations of Jaipur.
The huge Amer Palace Fort sits atop a small hill, and is an extensive palace complex built with pale yellow and pink sandstone and white marble.
The fort has four main sections, graced with their own courtyards.
On foot, you enter through the Suraj Pol, and by car, you enter via the Chand Pol. Both gates open into JalebChowk, the main courtyard.
The fort has a number of sections, including the zenana (the women’squarters), king’s quarters, gardens, temples, etc.
There are many attractions at Amer Fort, like the diwan-e-aam, such mandir, and Sheesh Mahal.
A beautiful light and sound show is also held every evening within the fort. Thanks to that, visitors canexperience an astounding spectacle that takes them through the history of the fort
Jaisalmer Fort
Tumblr media
The Jaisalmer Fort is popularly known as the Sonar Quila (Golden Fort). As the fort rises from the desert, it seems to become one with the golden hues of the sand, giving it a majestic look.
The setting sun adds auniqueaurato the sight, thus making sunset the best time to glance at its mystique.
The fort has been constructed in the classic style of the Royals by a number of local craftsmen.
The fort is featured in one of Satyajit Ray’s famous Feluda stories and its corresponding movie – Sonar Kela (The Golden Fortress).
Keoladeo National Park
Tumblr media
Earlier known as the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, the Keoladeo National Park is today recognised as being one of the most important bird breeding and feeding grounds in the world.
It was originally a royal hunting reserve during the 1850s, and was used as a game reserve by the Maharajas and the British.
In 1982, Keoladeo was declared a national park and was later listed as a World Heritage Site in 1985.
The park is home to over 370 species of birds and animals. To add to that, it also offers well-defined treks that can be completed on foot, cycle, or rickshaws.
Jantar Mantar
Tumblr media
This is one of the oldest astronomical observatories located in Jaipur and feature the world’s largest stone sundial. While JantarMantaris no longer a working science centre, it is now maintained as a monument.
Education activity sessions, guided tours, and music and light shows are organized here.
Jantar Mantar is one of the largest observatories in the world and comprises of remarkable stone assemblies. These assemblies can help interpret the position of celestial bodies and calculate local time.
There is a collection of nineteen astronomical instruments in Jantar Mantar which allows for the observation of astronomical positions with the naked eye.
Even if you cover all these Heritage Sites located in Rajasthan, do not forget – these don’t even scratch the surface of the treasure trove which this royal state houses. Rajasthan is truly a land of mystery that needs a lot of time for those who give in to the wanderlust to explore it.
