When Jeremy Borash was helping with finding an opponent to accept Awesome Kong’s $25,000 challenge, he came across a familiar face from WCW: the former “Scream Queen” Daffney, who looked like she hadn’t aged a day! Daffney had in fact been wrestling throughout the indies, including at Shimmer, PWG, UWF, IWA Mid-South, and more! This segued into Daffney beginning her career at TNA, which lasted two years until she retired from the ring.

Gail Kim (c) vs Awesome Kong for the TNA Knockouts Championship TNA Impact! at the Impact! Zone in Orlando, Florida.

In 2007, TNA decided to use more female wrestlers on their shows, and create a female division too, to be known as the Knockouts Division. With stars like Gail Kim and Jacqueline already on their roster, they had experienced, known names there. Ahead of Bound for Glory 2007, more female stars were signed, setting up a 10-Knockout Gauntlet to crown the first ever Knockouts Champion. While Gail became the Champion, a new addition to TNA showed she could be a big part of the Knockouts Division, and would be a real threat to any and every female in TNA.

The 6ft 1 Awesome Kong was quite an imposing figure, and stood out from the norm of what a Diva or Knockout should be. Kong used her size and power to advantage, and went into the Gauntlet as a favourite. But as usual for someone like Kong, she was eliminated when the Knockouts ganged up on her, and threw her out of the ring. Kong refocused, and showed how destructive she could be, beating anyone put her way, while keeping her eye on Gail, even oddly carrying round a photo of the Champion. Despite winning match after match, Kong was left out of the Knockouts 4-Way at Genesis, which Kim retained the title in. After the match, Kong confronted Kim, highlighting she wanted a chance to win the title.

The following Impact, Kim attack Kong after another Knockout squash match for the powerful star, but it didn’t end well, as Kong hit a powerful Sit-Out Powerbomb. TNA booked the two in a match for Turning Point, where Kim won by DQ when Kong attacked the referee, Velvet Sky, Angelina Love and powerbombed Kim on a chair. The two ladies would engage in a brawl on the following episodes of Impact, before TNA booked them in a No DQ match at Final Resolution. Once more, Kong destroyed one ref in anger, but as she went to do it to another, Kim rolled her up for the pin to retain the title again.

A few days later on the January 10th, Awesome Kong would get another shot at Gail Kim for the TNA Knockouts Championship. We present that match in full, including the arrival of a new and mystery associate of the challenger....

TNA Knockouts 6 Sides Of Steel Tag Team Grudge Match: Awesome Kong & Raisha Saeed Vs. Gail Kim & ODB TNA Lockdown [April 13, 2008]

Despite the fact that the TNA Knockouts division was chock full of competition, the team of Awesome Kong and Raisha Saeed proved to be too much to handle for any one woman in the company. Thus, a bond was formed between Gail Kim and ODB, who bonded together to take on the challenge of Kong and Saeed (who was actually Cheerleader Melissa under the mask). This match is essentially a battle for ODB and Kim to knock off the champion, Kong, but the challenge of Saeed was nothing to scoff at, as she quickly proved why she could have been a top contender in the division. Enjoy!
