C.J. Mosley doesn’t want Jets getting too comfortable during bye: ‘We have a goal’
C.J. Mosley doesn’t want Jets getting too comfortable during bye: ‘We have a goal’
Make no mistake: The Jets are fired up about their 6-3 start as they take some days off for their bye this week, but they believe they can be better for their final eight games. That’s been a message permeating down from the coaching staff to the players. “This bye week is going to be really big for us to get healthy, get mentally right, get physically right and have a little time to step away…

[ad_1] Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud left Sunday's game against the New York Jets after the back of his head hit the turf on a hit.The hit took place on the fourth quarter with the Jets leading, 24-6. Quinnen Williams hit Stroud after he released the ball, and the back of Stroud's head bounced off the turf at the end of the tackle.Stroud remained down in pain for several moments, but was eventually able to walk off the field on his own.He walked to the sideline medical tent for evaluation and was replaced in the game by back up Davis Mills. Stroud then went to the locker room as Mills remained in the game. The Texans then announced that he was in concussion protocol and questionable to return.Stroud was under constant pressure from the Jets defensive front throughout Sunday's game. Prior to his exit, he was sacked four times for a loss of 38 yards. [ad_2] Source link

[ad_1] Money talks. So does Quinnen Williams. In other words, the $96 million extension that Williams signed with the Jets in July hasn’t created a new person. “I’ve seen no change in the sense that he’s still his bubbly personality, team-first, practices his absolute tail off, very deliberate in everything he does,” head coach Robert Saleh said. “I do think he’s probably picked up a notch in terms of conditioning.” The idea of an improved Williams is tantalizing after a career-high 12 sacks and a First-Team All-Pro selection last season. “Everybody on our team is trying to get on that Aaron Rodgers level as guys who have amazing experience, amazing accountability and different things like that,” Williams told The Post. “Everybody is trying to scratch and claw for how they can get better every day and get to that level of execution.” Williams said the season opener Monday will feel different than the first 57 games of his NFL career, but not because he is much richer or because he feels a need to justify his new deal. “I feel like I’m different when it comes down to the accountability I have, the player I am,” Williams said. “I feel like I’m way different than years before. Not because of my contract, but I feel like I’m growing [every] year, getting better, learning every single year. “It’s definitely different going into a season when you’ve got the work behind you, and the quarterback, and the offense. Knowing that you are going out there not just by yourself but with a great group of guys on the D-line and the entire team who have the same mindset to win that football game.” That’s why the Jets are confident that Williams will break the decades-old trend of players who received an extension and then underachieved. “The old saying, ‘Money only makes you more of what you already are,’ ” Saleh said, “and if anything it has even made him more of a leader, more of a competitor, more of all the good things that he is.” Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams runs through a drill during practice on Aug. 31, 2023.Bill Kostroun LT Duane Brown (shoulder), RT Mekhi Becton (knee, illness) and RB Breece Hall (knee) were listed as questionable on the final injury report despite full participation in practice Saturday. CB Michael Carter II (elbow) was a full participant but added to the report on “semantics,” Saleh said. Barring a late change, the Jets will have their full 53-man roster available Monday to narrow down to 46 active players. Saleh said the decision has not been made yet whether to elevate third-string quarterback Tim Boyle from the practice squad. Becton will play his first regular-season game ever in front of Jets fans, after his rookie season was spent under COVID-19 restrictions and the next two seasons amounted to one game played (on the road) and 33 missed due to knee injuries. “I am excited for him,” Saleh said. “He’s going to have some mistakes. It is what it is. He hasn’t played football in two years, but he has worked hard to get to this point.” [ad_2]

[ad_1] The New York Jets have made Quinnen Williams the latest in a string of defensive linemen to get a significant long-term contract this offseason. The Jets and Williams agreed to a four-year, $96 million contract extension that contains $66 million in guaranteed money, as confirmed by CBS Sports NFL Insider Josina Anderson, who adds Williams' total deal is worth $105 million that also includes a fifth-year option. The team announced the extension Thursday."We are thrilled to secure Quinnen as a New York Jet for the foreseeable future, as he embodies everything we look for in our players," Jets GM Joe Douglas said. "He is a leader on and off the field, who does everything asked of him and more. He is a young, ascending player who has shown a consistent ability to dominate the line of scrimmage and help this team win. We are happy to have the business of football behind us and to turn our focus to getting ready for the 2023 season."Jets owner Woody Johnson, who tweeted at the star defensive tackle moments after the new deal was reported, added: "Quinnen is the epitome of a Jet. His commitment to this organization and our fans is consistently on display in his play, in his preparation, and in his work serving those in this area. We are looking forward to him, his wife, Maranda, and their new baby girl being Jets for a long time."Williams, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, quickly blossomed into one of the best players on New York's defense, and last season had his best year yet. Williams totaled 12 sacks, 12 tackles for loss and 28 quarterback hits in 2022, making the Pro Bowl and finishing seventh in Defensive Player of the Year voting while also being named a First Team All-Pro.  "The success of this organization is beyond important to me and completing this deal allows me to turn all my attention to positively impacting that," Williams said. "I am thrilled to put forth my best efforts alongside my brothers to get prepared for this season ahead of us."  Already this offseason, interior defensive linemen like Jeffery Simmons, Dexter Lawrence, Daron Payne, and Javon Hargrave signed contracts that averaged at least $20 million per year, but Williams' $24 million average annual value tops them all. Among interior linemen, that figure ranks second to only Aaron Donald. The reported guarantee figure of $66 million initially appears to dwarf the sums received by the aforementioned linemen who signed earlier this offseason, but it is worth noting that early reports often contain higher dollar figures and stronger guarantee language than what is eventually revealed in the actual contracts. Still, Williams appears to have been made the highest-paid non-Aaron Donald interior defensive lineman in the league, receiving a contract on par with some of the best edge rushers like Myles Garrett and Maxx Crosby.   Heading into his age-26 season as one of the anchors of what should be one of the NFL's best defenses, Williams is now also a very, very wealthy man.
