"The Pythagoreion is the archaeological site of the ancient town of Samos in Samos, Greece. It is located in the area of the modern town of Pythagoreio, from which it has got its modern name. The archaeological site contains ancient Greek and Roman monuments and a famous ancient tunnel, the Tunnel of Eupalinos or Eupalinian aqueduct."
Tumblr media
"Along with the Heraion of Samos, the Pythagoreion was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992 because of its testimony to the cultural, military, and economic importance of Samos during Archaic and early Classical Greece."
Tumblr media
"The seat of the municipality was the town of Pythagorio, formerly known as Tigani. The town was renamed in 1955 to honour the locally born mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras. The port of the town is considered to be the oldest man-made port of the Mediterranean Sea." [ref]

A Photo Essay: Following the Path of Apostle Paul - Days 4 & 5
The town of Pythagoreio, Samos, Greece. We were up early to catch a short flight to the island of Samos. In fact, the trip to the airport took longer than the flight. Morning traffic on the way to the Athens airport. We went to Samos because it was one of the ports where a ship carrying the Apostle Paul stopped. From Acts 20, verse 15, it appears it was simply an overnight stay. The island was…

the Heraion of Samos: “If a massive marble jenga tower falls in a marshland, crushing a tourist, does it make a sound?”
This was good. In a feat of extravagant planning, Clodia and I did the museum for this (accidentally) in the morning, went to see the tunnel at Pythagoreio, and then made the tough call to take a taxi down to this site, in the theory that 1) that way we might have more than five minutes to look around before the site closed at 3 and 2) we would be able to catch the last bus back, guilt-free. In the event, this was true, although in order to catch said bus we, uh, had to follow Google Maps’ INCREDIBLY dodgy directions back into town (at one point the ‘path’ was marked only by a length of fallen cable which ran, in places, through the incoming tide: see bottom right), and then figure out where the bus stop was. Actually, we did not figure out where the bus stop was. A kind man in an ice cream shop very firmly directed us to the corner, where we would turn “RIGHT,” he emphasized, pointing left: we went to the corner, went left, continued on well into a clearly residential area, turned back sadly, sat around in the square, and then the bus appeared and I jumped in front of it waving madly. So we never found out where the real stop was. But we didn’t have to take a taxi back.
