Prim is such an important character in the series that I of course did something for her, even if she isn't as popular as some of the other characters!
Buttercup begins to wail as well. No matter what I do, he won’t go. He circles me, just out of reach, as wave after wave of sobs racks my body, until eventually I fall unconscious. But he must understand. He must know that the unthinkable has happened and to survive will require previously unthinkable acts. Because hours later, when I come to in my bed, he’s there in the moonlight. Crouched beside me, yellow eyes alert, guarding me from the night. In the morning, he sits stoically as I clean the cuts, but digging the thorn from his paw brings on a round of those kitten mews. We both end up crying again, only this time we comfort each other.
and it’s funny to see people say that prim’s death happened for “no reason.” because it’s almost like…… war of any kind inevitably causes the senseless death of thousands. and it doesn’t mean anything. yes, prim died for no reason, and that was the point.
coin only ever cared about power, it was thinly veiled as a pursuit for justice. she was fine with innocent children dying if it meant citizens would think the blood was all on snow’s hands. pair this with gale’s weapon, and the fact that prim happened to be on the front lines, and bam. innocent, senseless deaths.
that’s from an emotional standpoint, though. from a narrative standpoint, prim’s death actually DID make sense. just as rue’s death served as the catalyst that convinced katniss to die by nightlock (the act that began the rebellion), prim’s death was the catalyst that forced katniss to confront coin’s true colors. now, katniss knew that coin was really no different from snow. it all went in a circle. the rebellion started because of katniss’s love for prim, and the rebellion was won because of that same love.
and on a final note: prim’s death was foreshadowed by her name alone. a primrose is a flower that wilts shortly after blooming.
no you guys don’t get it; it’s so bad on tiktok. everyone on there is so insistent that foxface purposefully killed herself with the berries solely based off the two second clip in the movie (which wasn’t even identifying edible plants it was literally just matching).
like…… the whole point with foxface from the beginning was not to overestimate your competitors. when she talks about cato and foxface in the same passage she explicitly states that it’s just as dangerous to overestimate who you’re facing. in that she was thinking about how she might be overestimating cato’s intelligence, but then foxface goes and does the same with peeta. katniss constantly talked about how smart she was. she had made it to the final four solely off of taking from others just to keep herself alive. she had been doing it the entire games, but she trusted that peeta knew the berries he was grabbing. she probably didn’t even check to see what they looked like, because let’s be real. district five’s industry was ELECTRICITY. do you really think someone from the power district knows anything about edible plants? she saw the berries with the cheese and took some to fuel herself. because she assumed katniss and peeta were literally about to eat them. why on earth would she kill herself when she was three people away from winning? and if she knew they were poisonous and assumed katniss and peeta were about to eat them, she would’ve been final two. she could’ve waited for them to eat the berries, take katniss’s bow and arrows, and she would’ve had at least a fighting chance against cato. not to mention all the other districts HATE THE CAREERS. if she knew they were poisonous, decided to kill herself, and assumed katniss and peeta were going to eat them, that would’ve left cato as victor. there was no one else. she did not know they were poisonous. she overestimated peeta’s intelligence. it’s saying being stupid is dangerous for everyone.
it lowkey pisses me off when people say Snow hates Katniss just because she reminds him of Lucy Gray
cause like.. no. he hates her because everything she does is a painful reminder that he had a choice.
when she pulled out those berries, he hated that she would rather die with Peeta than leave him behind for a life of glory and wealth.
whilst he was prepared to kill Lucy Gray for the same result.
when she volunteered in her sisters place at the reaping, he hated that she would rather die than leave her sister behind.
because he’d never do the same for Tigris, even though he arguably “owed” Tigris more than Katniss did Primrose.
when she stepped in to stop commander Thread during Gale’s whipping, he hated that she would rather put herself in the crossfire than let him die.
because he had every opportunity to, but he would never do the same for Sejanus. instead he sent him to his grave.
throughout the entire book Snow keeps choosing money and power over love, and throughout the entire book he tries to gaslight himself into thinking he didn’t have a choice.
Katniss’s actions to some extent forced him to confront his own choices. they forced him to realise that if he hadn’t acted the way he did, he could’ve still had the people he loved by his side.
then there’s the obvious thing with her you know, making the gamemakers and the regime look stupid and well, becoming the unwilling symbol of a rebellion but shh
katniss is so selfless in a way where it's not that she doesn't consider herself in situations, she has to to survive, but in that she doesn't value herself or her own life above anyone else's at all
her defining action is volunteering herself for prim
she makes haymitch promise to save peeta over her in the second games
but everyone else is desperately trying to keep her alive because they see the importance in her that she cant recognise in herself
everyone in the second games is willing to die and kill for the plan to succeed and for her to get out but she's just one track mind about keeping peeta alive
when she's killed coin and she's so sure she'll be executed anyday soon and she's in her bed singing to herself and trying to die from starvation everyone who knows her is in a courtroom defending her
she has such an impact on people and she's so utterly important but she doesn't realise that because all she's ever wanted is to keep people she cares about alive
