S kým se uvidím na ComicCon Prague?

Mám tam hned tři věci v Book Line, na které se můžete přijít podívat.

V sobotu v 10:00 s Jirkou Sivokem děláme Černou neděli naživo! Budeme zpovídat zástupce různých vydavatelství audioknih. Kdo přijde, může dostat i malý dárek!

V neděli ve 12:00 máme s Terkou Matouškovou a některými autory besedu Moderní fantastika. Budeme probírat Jiný kraj.

A v neděli v 17:00 mám sólo přednášku Marvel vs. Mytologie, aneb je Thór blond? Seznámím vás s tím, jak Marvel překopal mytologii a jak je to vlastně správně.

Pokud mě potkáte, přijdete se podívat, nebojte se mě oslovit. Ráda si s vámi pokecám!

ENG: As you all know, last weekend I had a stand at the first year of Comic-Con Prague 2020. I want to thank everyone who visited me, talked with me and supported me. I'm surprised how many people know my work and are eagerly waiting for my new comic. 😊 Glad I also met new faces and fellow artist. 😁 CZ: Jak jistě všichni víte, o víkendu jsem měl stánek na prvním ročníku Comic-Con Prague 2020. Největší obavy jsem měl asi z cesty, byla to moje první cesta po dálnici do Prahy, ke všemu mi ještě 2x vypadla navigace... 😅 Nakonec to všechno proběhlo v pohodě. Chci poděkovat všem, kteří navštívili můj stánek, pokecali a podpořili mě. The Kings of Coolsville....a chat with The Exbats!

Over the past few years I’ve gotten hip to Bisbee, Arizona’s Exbats (thanks to a recommendation from Resonars’ Matt Rendon who has produced some of their stuff and is now playing live with them on 2nd guitar) but it wasn’t really until last month when I had a chance to see the band live at Gonerfest in Memphis that I really took some serious notice. The band, Kenny McClain  on guitar/vocals, his daughter Inez on drums and bassist Bobby Carlson have been at it for nearly a decade, but have really picked up some steam these past few years. Last year saw the release of the terrific Kicks, Hits and Fits LP and next week their debut for Goner Records comes out, the 12-song Now Where Were We. The band seems to cherry pick the bands parts of 60’s rock/pop and give it a good ol’ 00’s updating (and a serious kick in the pants). Kenny and Inez were nice enough to answer some questions I shot their way.

 I know you grew up in Portland, Had you been in bands there?

           No, just us. We did play shows in Portland. Most notably Slabtown 2012-2014

When/how did you and Inez begin playing together as Exbats?

           We changed to being called The Exbats in 2015, we were living in Pinon, Arizona at that  point, on the Navajo Reservation.

At what point did you begin to take it more seriously and begin recording, playing gigs, etc.?

           We were visiting a friend around that time in Prague and we played a show that was really special. Much more than the previous 20 or so shows. Even with the language barrier people were really into it. It rejuvenated us. Also we started writing better songs by that point. We started to find our sound.

What was the first song you two ever recorded (that actually got released)?

           We think that the first real Exbats sounding song was Xena!, it ended up on our first official release, which was on Burger, a cassette 2016 "A Guide to Health Issues  Affecting Rescue Hens"

           Exbats is a british term for "Ex-battery hens" or in American "Rescue Hens"

Tell us about how you hooked up with Matt Rendon? Did he contact you or vice versa?

           We contacted him. He had a reputation we related to, and a cool sound. And we had been to some other studios that seemed a little to oriented towards Pro-Tools or fixing every little thing. We really like to capture the spirit of the song and moment. Matt is good at   this sort of recording where you practice and go in and play your stuff as a band. Very quickly we realized that we got along very well, and we have been with him ever since.

How did the forthcoming record on Goner come about? Did the label get in touch?

           They invited us to do last year's streaming event, kinda out of the blue, but The Resonars  had played the year before so maybe that's how they heard of us? So, when it came time   to share our finished record they were the only ones we could think of that might listen and respond. Plus, we knew we could totally trust them to be cool. So we pitched ourselves and they said yes.

How were the recording sessions for Now Where Were We? Is Matt a real taskmaster in the studio?

           These were a little different then normal, mostly due to Covid type stuff. We couldn't really get together and practice as much as we like. So we were doing one song at a time and figuring it out in the studio. Like with Kicks, Hits and Fits we recorded it in like 2-3   weeks. Before that we would knock an album in one week. This one took months. Like 20 Saturdays. Matt is not a taskmaster in the studio, I would say that he is more like patient, and tries to get the authentic sound of the band.He's not like "do this" or "do that"

Tell us about Gonerfest? Did you play any other shows or was the Gonerfest one a one off?

           More Vegan food next year please. But man this sounds really really cliche but it was like finding your tribe! Probably like people who go to comicon feel, I'd imagine, never been. Went to a convention for the TV show Community once, it was a little like that. Everybody was just very interested and knowledgeable about the same thing. Can't wait for next year. Hope we get to play, but if not were still going!

Who are some of your favorite current bands, local or otherwise?

           We mostly listen to the Beach Boys. Last record Kenny bought was Lori Burton off Discogs. Last record Inez bought was Nick Allison after his set at Gonerfest.

What are your top 10 desert island discs?

           9 copies of Pet Sounds

           1 Summer Days and Summer Nights by The Beach Boys, you know, for Friday night vibes.

What’s next for the band? Shows? Perhaps a tour?

           Not much, some local shows and tryin to get to NYC in January. Mostly just staying home and writing our Great American Car Album

Closing comments? Words of wisdom? Anything you wanted to mention that I didn’t ask?

           Keep it clean like Al Jardine.

           Our aesthetic is very talent show, we would rather be the band that fucks up playing a great song, then the one that plays a not very good song perfectly.

Scenes from the coastal city of Porto. 

We’ve arrived on the eve of Porto’s busiest day of the year.  The President of Portugal and all other citizens from the region apparently descend upon the city for a festival celebrating St. John (meaning St. John the Baptist).  They carry plastic mallets and hit each other atop the head, while taking in loads of barbecue and local wine. Everyone’s spirits seem high today as they prepare for the fun beginning on Sunday afternoon/evening and going all through the night into Monday morning.  Businesses are closed on Monday, as people properly participate in São João. 

This continues our streak for scheduling things on the busiest day of the year in foreign countries.  Who can forget Prague on New Years, Lucca on Comicon weekend, Tel Aviv’s Purim celebrations.

Tomorrow will start the Prague Comicon! Saturday sold out already in presale.
