what are your favorite types of perfumes? Also, what sample sets would you recommend for people just getting into perfume?

Hi, how nice to have a question from you! (your posts keep me a lot of company, they're kind of my daily gazette).

This post is loooong, you'be been warned!

How nice to be able to talk about fragrance. So, I start by telling you that in my opinion the main thing to figure out is what kind of perfume you like. Is there a memory, a flower an experience that has stuck with you because of a smell? In contrast, what are the smells/fumes that you hate? From there you go to figure out among the families which one is your favorite among: Citrus, Floral, Fougère, Chypre, Woody, Oriental, and Musky.

I'll give you a few examples of well-known commercial fragrances for each family so you can smell them in the perfumery or pharmacy

🍋 Citrus- zests of all kinds of citrus fruits Light blue- Dolce and Gabbana, Roger & Gallet -Cedrat Eau Fraiche, Acqua di Parma- Bergamot 💐 Floral: classical flower scents (mostly white flowers) Chloe, Nomade- Chloe, Miss Dior-Dior, Flora-Gucci 🌿 Fougère: woody, usually masculine (but in my opinion gender difference is a concept not applicable to fragrances, I use masculine or unisex perfumes almost every day). Acqua di Giò- Armani, Y- Ysl ✨ Chypre: classic, 'ladylike' , enveloping Sì- Armani, Jean Paul Gautier- Scandal, Narciso Rodriguez- Narciso 🌲 Woody: warm, woody base, usually the ones that are sold as 'cool boys' perfumes. Hero-Burberry, One Million- Paco Rabanne, bleu-Chanel, Sauvage-Dior ⛩ Oriental: spice and all things nice. The one gentleman- Dolce and Gabbana, Coromandel-Chanel. ☁ Musky : musk, leather, anything that blends with your natural scent. Idole- Lancome, Narciso Rodriguez- for him, Armani- Sì passione.

-> I suggest you ask for free samples or spray on the scent you like best and wait the whole day, so you evaluate how it changes on you and how long it lasts. I also recommend you look at this site, and if there is a note that you particularly like you can see what scents contain it and go to give it a try. A pro tip is to smell coffe grains to reset the nose between a fragrance and another (usually there are coffee beans near the shelves at stores), or just take some fresh air.

Coming to me, I use a mix of commercial perfumes but mainly niche perfumes thanks to a loved one who introduced me to them.

Actually, I am fond of musky, ambery, oriental and 'second skin' fragrances. I don't particularly like florals because on my skin they veer toward extreme sweetness and it bothers me. I usually use fragrances with few elements, I love minimalism in daytime but I am a night-time maximalist.

🎀 My favorite perfume, the one I probably use 99 times out of 100, all day long is "Mirabilis" by 'Artisan Parfumeur': musk and incense, earth and spirit. Wonderful, my Aomine Daiki of perfumes.

🎀 Another 'second skin' that I love is "Le Musc & La Peau 4.1"- Pierre Guillaume. Clean but not soapy, really well balanced.

🎀 The third perfume I use during daylight hours is Prada Amber Pour Homme. As you can see, no matter how it's categorized, it has a very fresh opening but then it has this warm, enveloping note of amber and saffron that makes me love it.

🌝 In the group of more impactful perfumes, those for the evening or a date out, I would say my favorite brand is Tom Ford.

I love "Black Orchid" because although it is a 'heavy' scent it remains elegant , and I also love "Beau de Jour" because it smells like lavender and has that vintage feel (some would tell you it smells like grandma's closet), or Noir Anthracite (vinyl, metallic, seductive ).

Belle D'Opium -YSL is another very playful fragrance, always getting compliments when i wear it.

🌒 The last strand I love are those "dissonant" fragrances, i.e., those that remind you of an experience and are not pleasant the first time you wear them, but as soon as they do drydown, you like them.

Mine are: Aura Mugler, a combination of rhubarb and green notes that makes you feel like a woodland deity, very tart and sassy, almost annoying.

Dent de Lait- Serge Lutens: metallic and milky, it is a perfume that evokes childhood, an ode to melancholy.

Equinox Bloom Penhaligon's : This tastes like a thaw, like spring. A child on the train told me I smelled like morning snow, I think that's a very good explanation.

😽Last but not least, the fragrances I love most on a man are scents that change to something disgusting on my skin, so I hope I have someone to gift them to sooner or later.

Egoiste platinum- Chanel : yes, please. this scent screams sensuality, kind dom vibes, and is perfect on anyone at any age.

Hindu Kush- Mancera: this is…mystical. unexpected, complex, warm and spiritual at the same time, hypnotic (my best friend wreaks havoc and ruin when he wears this, the scent is always a nice catchline).

Of course all the men's fragrances I wear I also love them on a potential partner…. What could be sexier than sharing the same fragrance?

Sorry for being pedantic and long-winded, I will open a tumblr page just for fragrances (joking).

Chaos :

Il faisait toujours sombre, mais tellement de monde s’activait autour d’eux que ça aurait tout aussi bien pu être le jour. Après le chaos de la bataille, des renforts avaient été appelés pour guérir et reconstruire ce qui devait l’être. Des humains continuaient d’arriver également par floppée, déposés en hélicoptères modernes. It was still dark, but there were so many busy people around them that it might as well have been daytime. After the battle's chaos, reinforcements had been called to heal and reconstruct what needed to be. Humans kept arriving in heaps, dropped by modern helicopters.

Balcony :

Scott monta la volée d’escaliers à sa droite, et longea la balustrade jusqu’à l’endroit le plus éloigné de l’entrée. Un second bar se tenait derrière lui, pour assouvir la soif pendant le concert. Depuis ce petit balcon, il surplombait toute la salle. Scott went up the flight of stairs to his right, and went along the railing until the furthest away from the entry. A second bar stood behind him, to quench one's thirst. From this little balcony, he overhung the whole room.

Feather :

Victoria la fusilla du regard et sortit un flacon et une plume de sa poche. Elle plongea celle-ci dans le contenant et la ressortit pleine d’encre. Elle saisit le bras d’Abby et y traça un symbole en prononçant des termes incompréhensibles. Victoria glared at her and got a bottle and a feather out of her pocket. She dove the latter in the former and brought it out full of ink. She took Abby's arm and traced a symbol on it, mumbling incomprehensible words.

Countess Potocka Visits the Davouts

The moment is drawing near when I will say goodbye to Countess Potocka. In my next post she will share the scene with another memoir-writer, both of them describing the same person in quite contrasting ways. For now, the Countess is still starring on her own, compelled by good manners to accept an invitation to a meal she would have given her left arm to be able to refuse. Marie-Louise being absent, the Countess finds another handy target for her barbs.

The Countess, having ascertained whether her visit will be more convenient in the daytime or in the evening (daytime), gets dressed in new, fashionable and expensive attire, though she is much bothered by her shoes (too small?). I can't help but think that this outfit was meant to impress the Davouts with her superior status and unimpeachable pedigree - something simpler would have been preferable, as we shall see. Since it's already three in the afternoon when she appears at her hosts' door, maybe they were not expecting her anymore, even if we assume she had advised them this was the day of her visit. At least the Countess is honest enough to state Madame Davout had treated her well in the past.

C'est ainsi que j'allai chez la maréchale Davout, qui m'avait comblée de prévenances pendant son séjour à Varsovie, du temps où son mari commandait en Pologne. Comme elle passait les étés à Savigny (1), c'est là qu'il fallut aller la chercher. J'envoyai à son hôtel en ville quelle serait l'heure la plus convenable pour faire ma visite, - on me répondit que ce serait dans la matinée. Je me rendis donc à Savigny par un soleil brûlant, mal garantie par un très petit chapeau orné de violettes, et très gênée dans mes brodequins lilas parfaitement assortis à une robe montante en gros de Naples de même couleur ; - madame Germont, oracle de la mode, avait elle-même combiné toute ma toilette.

[J]e me promettais une visite agréable. L'hôtel de la maréchale, à Paris, m'avait donné une grande idée de son goût et de son opulence, et je pensais la trouver luxueusement établie à Savigny. J'arrivai vers trois heures. Le château, entouré d'un fossé et d'un mur, avait pour entrée une porte hermétiquement fermée. L'herbe croissait dans les fossés ; - on eût dit une habitation abandonnée depuis maintes années. Mon laquais, ayant enfin trouvé le cordon de la sonnette, une petite fille assez mal vêtue vint, au bout de quelques minutes, demander ce qu'on désirait.

- Madame la maréchale est-elle à la maison?

- Oh ! pardonnez-moi, qu'ils y sont, et M. le maréchal aussi, répondit la fillette.

Et vite elle accourut appeler un des hommes du château, qui se mit à la suivre sans se presser et tout en ajustant sa livrée.

Je me fis annoncer, et blottie dans la voiture, j'attendis encore assez longtemps, ne sachant trop si je devais insister ou simplement laisser une carte.

Au bout d'un petit quart d'heure un valet de chambre se présenta enfin à la portière du carrosse et me fit entrer dans une vaste cour ; il s'excusa des lenteurs du service, m'avouant sans façons qu'à l'instant où j'étais arrivée, les gens travaillaient au jardin, et que lui-même était occupé à nettoyer le verger.

On me fit traverser plusieurs salons complètement démeublés ; la pièce où l'on m'introduisit n'était guère plus ornée que les précédentes, mais au moins il y avait un canapé et des chaises ! La maréchale ne tarda pas à apparaître. Je m'aperçus aisément qu'elle avait fait toilette pour moi, car elle attachait encore quelques épingles à son corsage. Après quelques minutes d'une conversation languissante, elle sonna pour faire prévenir son mari. Puis nous reprîmes notre entretien pénible. Ce n'est pas que madame Davout manquât d'usage ou fût dépourvue de cette sorte d'esprit qui facilite les rapports entre deux personnes du même monde, mais il y avait en elle une certaine roideur qui pouvait être prise pour de la morgue. Elle ne perdait jamais de vue le maréchalat ; jamais un sourire gracieux ne venait animer les traits de sa beauté sévère. [...]

Le maréchal arriva enfin dans un état de transpiration qui attestait son empressement ; il s'assit tout essoufflé, et, tenant son mouchoir de poche pour s'essuyer le front, il eut soin de le mouiller de salive afin d'enlever plus sûrement la poussière dont sa figure était couverte. Cet abandon un peu soldatesque cadrait mal avec les manières empesées de son épouse ; elle en fut visiblement contrariée. Me trouvant de trop dans cette scène muette, je me levai et voulus prendre congé, mais on me pria de rester à déjeuner. En attendant que le repas fût servi, nous fîmes une promenade dans le parc... Il n'y avait aucun chemin tracé, les gazons étaient de hautes herbes toutes prêtes à devenir des meules de foin, les arbres coupés pendant la Révolution repoussaient en manière de broussaille ; je laissais à chaque buisson des fragments de mes volants, et mes brodequins lilas avaient pris une teinte verdâtre. Le maréchal nous encourageait de la voix et du geste, nous promettant une surprise charmante !... Quel ne fut pas mon désappointement lorsque, au détour d'un massif de chênes adolescents, nous nous trouvâmes en face de trois petites huttes en osier ! Le duc mit un genou en terre et s'écria :

- Ah! les voilà... les voilà !...

Puis, modulant sa voix :

- Pi... pi... pi...

Aussitôt une nuée de perdreaux se mit à voltiger autour de la tête du maréchal.

- Ne laissez sortir les autres qu'au moment où les plus jeunes seront rentrés, et donnez du pain à ces dames... Elles vont s'amuser comme des reines, dit-il à un rustre qui remplissait les fonctions de garde-chasse.

Et nous voilà, par un soleil brûlant, donnant la becquée aux perdreaux !

La duchesse vida, avec un calme et une dignité imperturbable, le panier qu'on lui avait présenté. Quant à moi, je faillis me trouver mal, et, n'y tenant plus, je fis observer que le ciel se couvrait et que nous étions menacés d'un orage.

Le déjeuner fini, je m'esquivai en toute hâte, jurant, mais un peu tard, qu'on ne m'y prendrait plus.

Thus I went to the home of Maréchale Davout, who had showered me with courtesies during her stay in Warsaw, when her husband was in command in Poland. As she spent the summers in Savigny (1), it is there that I had to go and find her. I wrote to her Paris house to find out the most convenient time to visit her, and was told that it would be in the daytime. So I went to Savigny on a broiling hot day, little protected from the sun by a very small hat adorned with violets, and very uncomfortable in my lilac booties perfectly matched with a high dress in taffeta in the same color; - Madame Germont, the oracle of fashion, had herself arranged my costume.

I had promised myself this would be a pleasant visit. The Maréchale's Paris residence had much impressed me with her taste and love of fashion, and I thought I would find her luxuriously settled in Savigny. I arrived at about three o'clock. The door of the chateau, which was encircled by a moat and an enclosure, was hermetically sealed. Tall grasses were growing in the moat; the chateau had the appearance of having been deserted for many years. My footman having finally found the doorbell, a little girl, rather ill-dressed, appeared, after a few minutes, to ask what was wanted.

- "Is Madame la Maréchale at home?"

- "Oh, but yes, they are there, and so is the Marshal," answered the little girl.

And she hurried to summon one of the servants of the chateau, who proceeded to follow her at a leisurely pace, adjusting his livery as he went.

I had myself announced, and huddling in the carriage, I waited for quite a while, wondering whether I should insist or whether I ought to simply leave a visiting card.

After a mere quarter of an hour, a manservant finally appeared at the door of my carriage and led me into a vast courtyard; he apologized for the slowness of the service, informing me without particular deference that at the moment I arrived, the household staff was working in the garden, and that he himself had been engaged in tidying the orchard.

I was led through several completely unfurnished salons; the room into which I was ushered was hardly more ornate than the previous ones, but at least it had a sofa and chairs! The Maréchale presently appeared. I could easily perceive that she had just dressed up for me, because she was still busy fastening some pins to her bodice. After a few minutes of languishing conversation, she pulled the bellcord so her husband could be apprised of my presence. She and I then resumed our awkward conversation. It is not that Madame Davout's manners were lacking, or that she was deprived of that sort of wit which facilitates exchages between people of similar backgrounds, but there was in her manner a kind of stiffness which might be mistaken for arrogance. She never forgot about the marshalate; never did a gracious smile enliven the features of her austerely beautiful face. [...]

The Marshal finally arrived, his haste reflected in his heavy perspiration; out of breath, he sat down and, using his pocket handkerchief to wipe his forehead, he moistened it with saliva in order to more efficiently remove the dust from his face. This casualness, a bit too soldierly, contrasted sharply with the starchy demeanor of his wife; she was noticeably annoyed about it. Finding myself de trop in this silent scene, I rose and tried to take my leave, but I was enjoined to stay for a mid-day meal. While waiting for this to be served, we went a walk in the grounds... There were no paths, the lawn was covered with high grass ready to be turned into haystacks, the trees, cut down during the Revolution, were growing back as scrub; I left shreds of my dress's ruffles on each bush, and my lilac booties had taken on a greenish tinge. The Marshal encouraged us by voice and by gesture with the promise of a charming surprise!... What disappointment when, at the bend of a clump of stripling oaks, we finally stood in front of three small wicker huts! The Duke went down on one knee and exclaimed:

- "Ah! here they are... here they are!..."

Then, modulating his voice:

- "Pi... pi... pi..."

And at once a swarm of partridges began to flutter around the Marshal’s head.

- "Don't let the others go out until the youngest have returned, and give the ladies some bread... They are going to enjoy themselves like queens", he said to a roughneck who was the gamekeeper.

And there we were, under scorching sunshine, feeding partridges!

With unruffled and imperturbable dignity, the Duchess emptied the basket of bread she had been given. I, on the other hand, came close to fainting, and this being beyond my endurance, I pointed out that clouds were moving in and that a storm threatened.

Once we had finished eating, I left in greatest haste, swearing to myself that this visit would not be repeated.

So there went the Countess’s pleasant visit, just not quite as pleasant as foreseen. I confess that I share her feelings about the spit-moistened handkerchief. And I too have been in the excruciating position of trying to make conversation when there is nothing to converse about. But she did not expect to have her fancy dress shredded by unkempt scrub. All this while traipsing in uncomfortable booties ruined by grass stains, the reward for this being to witness Davout calling his partridges in a falsetto voice, and a final indignity, bringing her close to fainting (or was it the foot-pinching booties?): having to feed breadcrumbs to partridges, while being expected to have fun doing it. Pass the smelling salts.

The food must have been good, because she does not have a word of criticism about it. No word whatsoever about it, in fact. I suppose no artichokes were served.

My little finger tells me the Davouts were not sorry to see the back of her, unless her manners were so exquisite that she was able to feign delight through her visit. But then again there was this laboured conversation, so... no. They were glad she left.

THE PURSER

>>> For choosing to confide in THE CHAPLAIN, your feelings of dread ease during daytime. For a while, you almost dare entertain the hope that this is working. But then an insidious thought burrows into your mind: what if the Chaplain will use your confessions against you?

>>> You feel your stable nature disintegrate. Even as your rational side understands that insomnia can cause paranoia, that you’ve seen it before in starving men, a more powerful feeling urges you on.

THE EMPRESARIO

>>> For trying to quell the protest in the officer’s mess, you gather the attention of both the skeptical faction, who would benefit from a mutiny of sorts, and the faction that accepts the survivor’s account. This makes it exponentially harder to carry on with your plans.

>>> You are tasked directly by the superiors of the crew with overseeing any words of rebellion, despite being a guest. You do not mistake it for an honor; this is a direct leash to keep your plans in check, and thus either dim or stunt your influence as neutral party.

THE COMMANDER

>>> For choosing to tell your Captain the survivors were exaggerating at best, you become the leading figurehead for the skeptical faction onboard. Fellow skeptics understand that you are championing their cause. This garners you the respect of people like THE STOWAWAY, THE MARAUDER, THE EMPRESARIO, THE INTREPID.

>>> You now have more influence on the ship than before—though from an opposite direction. You lose the ear of the ship’s trifecta: CAPTAIN, VETERAN, PURSER. You lose the faith of the Agathe survivors, including some of them you’ve known before.

THE CHAPLAIN

>>> For nipping the sailors’ suspicions in the bud, you draw the hostility of THE INTREPID, who saw your apparent gullible nature as fertile ground for an alliance. You cannot understand how rampant fear would serve their cause, but you are inclined to think the worst.

THE INTREPID

THE DOE-HEARTED

>>> For agreeing to give them an in to your uncle, you have now earned the goodwill of THE INTREPID. You can now go to them for advice or information. This will increase proportionally to your ability to deliver a one on one meeting between them and the CAPTAIN.

>>> You can now ask favors from them, as well as from their immediate allies: THE LOVER, THE COMMANDER. However, if you do not deliver, you are at risk of finding yourself in an enmity instead.

THE VOLCANIC

>>> For choosing to remain silent about your ailments, you maintain what fragile standing you have with the crew of the Promethean, gritting your teeth to the chills that grip your neck and working through it.

>>> Time escapes you more and more, especially in the late hours of the evening - you are unable to sleep, and restlessness plagues you more than ever before. You may have survived Le Silencieux, but one could hardly call this living.

THE DEVOTED

>>> For taking the note to the Captain, you are delegated to keep an eye on everyone as they enter the common mess on even days, and as they enter the officer’s mess on the odd days.

>>> Your schedule is altered, but what’s far worse, the entirety of your behavior is forced to change. You are meant to be unobtrusive but determined, to keep an eye out for people’s palms - but how can this happen without unnerving them? It feels against everything you are.

THE APOSTATE

>>> For confessing your fear to the COMMANDER, you can rest assured knowing they are well informed of what lurks in promise. But if they choose to ignore your words, you can no longer save them.

>>> You see that the Commander still insists to paint the Agathe as scared, scarred prey. Weavers of tales. He pities your lot, but he does not respect it. You lose faith. You lose calm. You lose patience.

THE VETERAN

>>> For choosing to go look for the boatswain, you are the first to find their body. You are there just in time to see life flowing out of their face. It’s a physical sight: like smoke pipe, it pours out of their eyes and mouth. You’ve seen men die, but never like this.

>>> You incur severe emotional damage, and your composure cracks with each passing day. You can share what you witnessed, or you can keep it hidden. You do not know what would make it worse.

THE ROMANTIC

>>> For gifting the compass to THE JUDAS, you strike an affinity with them. You begin to spend more and more time with the Agathe crew, writing their account of what happened, hearing their stories out.

>>> Your fellow crew members cold-shoulder you. You no longer have a place at the common mess table, and on several nights you find your hammock cut with a knife, your belongings smeared with trash. You can only wonder how long it will be before someone tears you apart.

THE IDOL

>>> For ignoring whatever mirage you might have seen, you spare any further sparking of fear among your crew, though unease is not quick to let go of you. Your excuses are feeble, even to yourself - but they are enough to stave off any unwanted questions.

>>> You grow more and more wary of THE VOLCANIC, perhaps for how they sense the turmoil brewing within you. Your fellow crew can provide no comfort, and you develop a habit of looking over your shoulder one too many times that THE SCION and THE WILDCARD do not miss.

THE MARKED

>>> Your shot rings true and pierces James in the heart - his likeness dissipates without so much as a whisper - elsewhere you hear a faint roar, otherworldly. Not a thing wounded, but enraged.

>>> You have angered The Silent One, and you feel an impending sense of dread in the pit of your stomach. Somehow you know you’ve provoked something terrible. Unless you confide in another who is willing to believe you, you suffer this knowledge alone.

THE DOCTOR

>>> For speaking the truth of the unknown cause of death, a fear settles upon the ship, soft as snow, heavy as guilt. You know you will have to send the boatswain’s body home to their family without an explanation for their death, and that perhaps haunts you more than the mystery of their body.

>>> You are forced to perform your own examination when the next morning, several long claw marks adorn the side of your body, bleeding profusely and sending sharp pangs of pain with the slightest movement. Once again you are left without an explanation, your new wounds mocking you.

THE HARUSPEX

>>> For remaining silent, the voices increase. Their strength doubles like a river poorly dammed: they’re in your room, now, they’re on deck when you keep watch. They come from outside, not within: from the sea, the storm. They say warnings. Sometimes, they say worse things.

>>> You incur severe damage, and sleep and food begin to elude you. Your duties begin to be seen to less and less, but with everything going on, how can you draw even more attention to yourself?

THE CLAIRVOYANT

>>> For allowing yourself to be noticed, you invite the attention of believers and skeptics alike. Even if it is by your will, it cuts like a double-edged blade.

THE SCION

>>> For running back to the rest, you’ve successfully resisted The Silent One’s beckoning, a triumph, perhaps. But you feel it is not done with you yet.

>>> You are back beneath the ice, in your dreams. It calls again, draws you from slumber to climb to the upper deck. A deckhand finds you about to climb over the edge, unaware of your surrounding, a faint smile playing on your lips. When word gets out, you are relieved from your duties for three days until your superior deems you well enough to return.

THE AMULET

>>> For alerting the others that something in the Boatswain is still alive, you make sure you will be the first one asked to recount what happened, barring only perhaps THE VETERAN.

>>> The poor boy’s friends as well as curious strangers ask you if he truly was possessed in your grip. The tale spins out of control, and soon you hear a variance where it was your touch that put the devil in him - or drew it out. You don’t know what is worse.

THE LOVER

>>> For choosing to seek what lies restless in the dark, you become subject to a loss of time - THE COMMANDER finds you in the corner of your room hours later, cold to the touch and unblinking. You remember nothing but a flicker of a shadow that looks too much like the deceased boatswain. You remember it being only seconds.

>>> You are shaken from the ordeal, and opening your eyes leaves you vulnerable to more tricks of the night while closing them invites a darkness reminiscent of the shadows that now haunt you. Sleep evades you, and even the touch of your loved ones feels too much like ice.

THE CHRONICLER

>>> For sharing your ominous feeling about this place, you become a cornerstone for Promethean believers and the skeptics alike. A small, timely crowd abounds before your cabin door each day. From questioner, you become the questioned.

>>> The following people come to you with doubts of their own: THE STOWAWAY, THE CHAPLAIN, THE PURSER, THE THESPIAN. You can avoid some of their pressing for details, but you know you won’t be able to stave them off for long.

THE STOWAWAY

>>> For exposing the runes on THE CLAIRVOYANT’s skin, your credibility as a translator has increased. Additionally, in doing so, the Promethean’s fears over the unknown has simmered considerably, many onboard sighing in relief over a liar’s truth now told.

>>> THE CAPTAIN thanks you for your honesty, and THE VETERAN has warmed to you considerably. However, THE CLAIRVOYANT no longer meets your eyes and THE MARKED still looks at you with a retained level of doubt.

THE THESPIAN

>>>> For daring to sully THE COMMANDER’s name to THE CAPTAIN, you plant the first seeds of mistrust between the two, delicately imbalancing what camaraderie existed. Neither will soon forget this moment.

>>>> You have added a new divide onto the ship, ice cracking a clean line between the members of the Promethean. You now face a different terror: THE LOVER’s wrath. There is an unease when members of the Promethean look at you now, unsure of what else you know.

THE SOCIALITE

>>> In keeping silent, the survivor’s testimony hangs in the air as it has, untarnished. You are aware one word from you about the opium and it will ruin the credibility of the entire party. Yet if something is to taint their trustworthiness, it will not be your word.

>>> You now have a tentative allyship in THE THESPIAN—though you also now possess leverage over them too. You can ask them for a favor, or to supply you with any intel you might desire about both Promethean passengers or Agathe survivors.

THE SCARLET

>>> For choosing to risk THE VOLCANIC’s ire, you are now their ally in their upcoming plans. When the gun’s hideout is seen by the Promethean’s rigger, THE RAVEN, you are both called into the CAPTAIN’s quarters.

>>> You are now directly associated with THE VOLCANIC by the rest of the crew - you share the standing they will gain, should matters take a turn for the worst, as well their potential failing.

THE MARAUDER

>>> For locking up the first troublemaker, you earn a no-nonsense reputation among both the common seamen and the senior officers, as well as The Captain’s favor.

>>> Fewer common seamen join you in your evening nightcaps, and some outright ignore you if they’re not grabbing their rations. You’ve found a new ally in THE AMULET, as well as the favor of the rest of the survivors once they hear word of your actions.

THE RAVEN

>>> For taking the fang to the DOCTOR, you begin to assist them in their research. Soon, you have scores of books that beg deciphering: botany, anatomy, zoology, pages you glimpsed before in Parisian libraries, but never parsed before.

>>> You earn an allyship with the Promethean faction that tolerates the Agathe crew and seeks humane answers for what happened: THE DOCTOR, THE CHAPLAIN, THE VETERAN, THE PURSER. Yet the next day, you begin to see strange bite marks on your body.

THE CAPTAIN

>>> For deciding to turn the Promethean around, you have incited the anger of THE COMMANDER and THE INTREPID, who do not try to hide what thoughts blacken in their eyes: they think you a coward, and they are not alone in sharing this sentiment.

>>> Whispers of your decision turn into outcry from members of your own crew, though THE APOSTATE, THE JUDAS, and THE VOLCANIC are now ready to defend your name against those who used to respect you.

Countess Potocka witnesses a tragedy

Here the Countess recount a much less happy event connected to the marriage of Napoleon and Marie-Louise. I have not researched how many died on this occasion, but even one was too many:

Le prince de Schwatzemberg [sic], ambassadeur d'Autriche, n'avait consenti à céder le pas qu'à la belle-soeur de la nouvelle Impératrice. Le bal qu'il donna suivit de près la fête de Neuilly et dut sa célébrité à l'horrible catastrophe qui le rendit historique. Le local de l'ambassade n'étant pas assez vaste pour que les deux mille personnes invitées pussent y trouver place, on avait construit au milieu du jardin une énorme salle de bal communiquant avec les appartements au moyen d'une élégante galerie. Cette salle et cette galerie, bâties en planches, étaient couvertes en toile goudronnée et décorée intérieurement de draperies de satin rose et de gaze d'argent. - Je me trouvais dans la galerie au moment où le feu se déclara, et je dus peut-être mon salut à un incident qui m'avait vivement contrariée. J'avais une robe de tulle uni au bas de laquelle un bouquet de lilas blanc était rattaché à ma ceinture par une chaîne en diamants composée de lyres accrochées les unes aux autres ; quand je dansais, cette chaîne se défaisait ; la comtesse de Brignole, qui me chaperonnait ce soir-là, voyant que j'allais valser avec le vice-roi, voulut bien m'emmener dans la galerie et m'aider à enlever cette malencontreuse chaîne. Pendant qu'elle avait la bonté de s'occuper de ce soin, j'aperçus, une des premières, la légère fumée produite par un candélabre posé au-dessous d'un feston de gaze ; plusieurs jeunes gens s’étant groupés autour de nous, je m'empressai de leur faire remarquer ce qui n'était encore qu'une menace. Aussitôt l'un d'eux s'élança sur une banquette ; voulant prévenir le danger, il arracha avec violence la draperie qui, en s'abaissant subitement au-dessus de la girandole, prit feu et communiqua la flamme au plafond de toile goudronnée. Fort heureusement pour moi, madame de Brignole n’affronta pas le danger et, sans attendre une minute, s'empara de mon bras, traversa en courant tous les salons, se précipita au bas de l'escalier, et ne reprit haleine qu'après avoir traversé la rue et s'être réfugiée dans l'hôtel de madame Regnault, situé vis-à-vis de l'ambassade. Là, tombant sur un fauteuil, épuisée par la course et l'émotion, elle m'indiqua le balcon afin que je lui rendisse compte de ce qui se passait. Je ne comprenais rien à ce soudain effroi, car j'eusse volontiers continué à danser, tant il me semblait impossible qu'un danger sérieux nous menaçât dans un lieu où se trouvait l'Empereur! ...

Bientôt des bouffées de fumée enveloppèrent la salle de bal et la galerie que nous venions de quitter. La musique ne se faisait plus entendre, une confusion bruyante avait succédé sans transition à l'éclat de la fête. Les cris, les gémissements arrivaient jusqu'à nous ; le vent apportait des paroles distinctes, des accents désespérés ; on s'appelait, on se cherchait, on voulait se rassurer sur le sort de ceux qu'on aimait et qui couraient cet horrible danger.

Au nombre des victimes se trouva la princesse de Schwartzemberg, belle-soeur de l'ambassadeur, qui, ne voyant pas sa fille à ses côtés, se précipita dans les flammes ; - elle fut écrasée par un lustre dont la corde avait cédé. Hélas ! son enfant, à l'abri du danger, l'appelait à grands cris... [...] Plusieurs femmes se trouvèrent dépouillées de leurs bijoux ; des filous ayant escaladé le mur qui sépare le jardin de la rue, exercèrent leur métier en toute sécurité, à la faveur de la confusion générale.

En peu d'instants le salon de madame Regnault de Saint-Jean d'Angely se remplit de blessés. C'était un spectacle à la fois terrifiant et bizarre de voir toutes ces personnes couronnées de fleurs, en robe de bal, se livrant à des gémissements qui contrastaient cruellement avec leur parure.

Nous passâmes ainsi une grande partie de la nuit à les consoler et à les soulager autant qu'il fut en notre pouvoir. Lorsque vint le jour, il fallut bien s'en retourner. Gens et voitures, tout avait disparu. Celles qui pouvaient marcher se trouvèrent réduites à s'en aller à pied en costume de bal et en souliers de satin blanc. A cette heure matinale, les rues sont encombrées de charrettes de maraîchers ; on nous prit probablement pour des folles, et nous eûmes à subir des bordées de lazzi.

Quelque légers que soient les Parisiens, cette catastrophe produisit une vive et profonde impression. Elle donna lieu à des propos de tout genre ; on voulut y voir les combinaisons d'une infâme politique. Ce qu'il y a de certain, c'est que des courtisans zélés avaient engagé l'Empereur à se retirer avant que la foule eût envahi toutes les issues, essayant de jeter dans son esprit un soupçon odieux ; mais, toujours calme dans le danger, Napoléon ne prêta point l'oreille à ces mesquines insinuations ; il rentra à l'ambassade après avoir mis l'Impératrice en voiture, disant au prince de Schwartemberg qu'il venait l'aider à éteindre le feu.

Ce mot produisit un grand effet, pénétra les Autrichiens d'admiration et de reconnaissance. Tous les Allemands présents à la fête, l'ambassadeur en tête, entourèrent l'Empereur, et ce rempart de coeurs plus ou moins ennemis valait pour le moment un détachement de la garde impériale.

I was wearing a dress of plain tulle, at the bottom of which a bouquet of white lilac was attached to my belt by a diamond chain made up of connecting lyres; when I danced, this chain kept coming undone; the countess of Brignole, who was my chaperone that evening, seeing that I was about to waltz with the viceroy [Eugène], agreed to come with me to the gallery to help me remove this bothersome chain. While she was kindly taking care of this, I was one of the first to notice the light smoke emanating from a candelabra placed under a drapery of gauze; several young people had gathered around us, and I promptly brought to their notice what was still only a possible danger. At once one of these young men leapt onto a bench; meaning to prevent any danger, he tore off the drapery, which fell upon the candelabra, caught fire, and transmitted the flame to the tarred cloth ceiling. Fortunately for me, Madame de Brignole decided to flee the danger and, without an instant's delay, grabbed my arm, ran through all the embassy's salons, rushed down the staircase, and only stopped to regain her breath after crossing the street and taking refuge in Madame Regnault's house, located opposite the embassy. There, falling into an armchair, exhausted by the racing and the emotion, she motioned me to the balcony so that I could give her an account of what was happening. I could not comprehend Madame de Brighole's sudden fright; I would have willingly continued dancing, so impossible it seemed to me that we could be threatened with any serious danger in a place where the Emperor was present!

Soon wafts of smoke enveloped the ballroom and the gallery we had left moments before. The music had gone silent; noisy confusion had succeeded without transition to the brilliance of the celebrations. We heard screams and moans; distinct words uttered in desperate tones were carried by the wind; people called out to each other, sought each other out, wanted to reassure themselves about the fate of their loved ones left in such horrible danger.

Among the victims was the Princess of Schwartzemberg, sister-in-law of the ambassador, who, not finding her daughter by her side, rushed into the flames; - she was crushed by a chandelier whose cord had broken. Alas! her child, safe from danger, was desperately calling out to her... [...] Several women were stripped of their jewels; some criminals, having scaled the wall which stands between the garden and the street, acted in complete safety, thanks to the general confusion.

In a few moments the salon of Madame Regnault de Saint-Jean d'Angely [1] was filled with the wounded. It was at the same time terrifying and bizarre to see all these people wearing ballgowns and crowns of flowers, whose moans were in such cruel contrast to their adornments.

We spent a great part of the night consoling them and soothing them as much as was in within our power. When daytime came, we had to return home. Household staff and coaches, all had vanished. Those of us who could walk had to find their way home wearing their ballroom attire and white satin shoes. At this early hour, the streets are choked with market gardeners' carts; it seems we were taken for madwomen, and we were subjected to merciless mockery.

However lacking in seriousness the Parisians might be, this catastrophe left on them a deep and vivid impression. It gave rise to comments of all kinds; some claimed it to be the result of evil political machinations. What is certain is that some overzealous courtiers had urged the Emperor to withdraw before the crowd had blocked all the exits, trying as they were to instil an abhorrent suspicion in his mind; but, calm as always in the presence of danger, Napoleon did not give credence to these petty insinuations; after sending the Empress home in a carriage he returned to the embassy, telling the Prince of Schwarzemberg that he had come to help him put out the fire.

These words had a profound effect on the Austrians and gave rise to deep feelings of admiration and gratitude. All Germanic individuals in attendance at the celebrations, the ambassador first among them, surrounded the Emperor, and in this particular moment this entourage of inimical souls was worth a detachment of the Imperial Guard.

This tragedy did not stop the building of unsafe wooden structures into which large crowds of visitors were expected. In 1897 a horrific fire at a charity bazaar, also in Paris, resulted in the death of 126 persons. Many of those were as socially prominent as the Princess of Schwarzenberg, but most of them were just ordinary visitors:

The program follows their lives and adventures. Because of this, the episodes could be broadcast in any order.[citation needed] Since the 1980s, many MOVIE feature progressive change in the plot, the characters, or both.
