I have.... so many questions about the production, dub, and distribution of this movie.
Mostly, I'm unsure of how much of the manga had been written when this movie was written. (The movie released in Japan in April 1994, and the manga ENDED in July 1994, so it was pretty far along, but Im not sure how close to the end it was when the movie was written.) Togashi didn't work on the movie- but the character of Kuronue is....incredibly similar to Yomi from the last arc of the manga. Even down to basic character design. Which is...odd. maybe "thief partner from kuramas past with the angst drama" is just a SUPER obvious idea, but it's weird we did it twice. (Long black hair, weird pointy ears...yoko has a type)
But ALSO, very strangely- this movie was dubbed into English and released in the US in 1998- 3 years before Funimation dubbed and released the actual anime here? And 5 years before the manga would get an English translation officially.
So like...who was this dubbed for? (It being a different voice cast is so disorienting. I don't think it's bad, it's just....not....right.) this movie seems fairly incomprehensible if you aren't already familiar with the characters- it doesn't explain who anyone is. But only Americans who somehow had access to the original Japanese anime or manga in 1998 would know this series? (not an impossible feat with fan subs, but in the 90s that was a pretty limited space) Why didn't US Manga Corps get the rights to the actual anime when they got this movie? Who actually watched this movie when it was first released here?
Also, I want to know if anyone who worked on Sailor Moon (especially the Sailor R movie from 1993) had any part in this. Because If you just copy/pasted the villain of this movie into Sailor Moon, it would work perfectly. Like, aesthetics, backstory, all of it. He's "feeding off the evil born from human hearts" is such a sailor moon line. (And normally I would chalk any Sailor moon vibes up to Togashi being inspired by Takeuchi. Or him asking her for input or something, but Togashi didn't work on this!)

yo does anyone in the yyh fandom know where i can find the golden seal, poltergeist report, and two shots/all or nothing in 1) good quality 2) with no watermarks and 3) no subtitles as part of the video itself? (no subtitles at all or ones i can turn off, either is good)
i wanna be able to take some nice screenshots of all of them but its hard finding good quality uploads (i really wish they were all just on funimation or something like with the rest of the anime >_>)

Art boards from the Yu Yu Hakusho Poltergeist Report Movie (1994)
Those art boards were shared and belong to shonan211 on Twitter. Even now, the backgrounds and visuals of this movie is amazing.
Yuji Ikeda was the art director of this movie. He is the founder of the background art company Studio Wyeth, that has provided background art assistance to the Yu Yu Hakusho movies and anime.
When Yu Yu Hakusho was celebrating its 25th anniversary, Ikeda sent the illustration he drew of the Spirit World flooding with a message:
Congratulations on your 25th anniversary!! From now on and forever!!

I also wrote a little bit about the The Poltergeist Report movie in this post.

Finally got around to watching “Poltergeist Report: Yu Yu Hakusho” in English, fully knowing what I was getting myself into. As a long time Yu Yu fan, I’ve seen the series front to back several times… but nothing could have prepared me for what I witnessed.
Funimation never got around to dubbing this particular film, instead a completely different cast is used.
And boy did they botch it.
The animation itself was stellar, along with the story the movie plays out. You get Kurama/Yoko backstory and more Botan!
The problem arises when your favorites all open their mouths to speak and sound like absolute dog shit. Kuwabara is now Kuwahara as well. I’m extremely curious to know how that came about. (Which, speaking of, I had to rewind several times to make sure I heard right)
It was an experience. Next time I watch will be in Japanese. I laughed so hard watching this that my eyes hurt and I’m not sure I could physically withstand it again.
