He adored the ocean and if it were possible to live there he would.
The beach had been his favorite place since he was a child. He remembered the first time he felt the sand between his toes, big eyes marveling over the dull yellow color, fingers reaching out to rummage through the loose substance. He walked hand in hand with his mother who prepared him with soft words about the vast of blueish green that lied ahead of them. Dowoon felt his heart race his hand squeezing his mother’s tightly when their feet met the ocean’s edge, sea foam tickling their appendages, making the young boy laugh at the cool feeling of the water.
“Do you like it Dowoonie?” His mother smiled down at him before she scooped him into her arms and carried him into the water stopping once it reached his bottom. They both giggled as the watched the waves come and go.
Dowoon reached down to stick his little hand in the water, splashing it everywhere. “Mom! Can we live here?!” He asked excitedly and his mother laughed, cuddling him close and placing a big kiss to his chubby cheek.
“I wish we could son, but this place is the home for fish and other creatures.”
Distant voices broke through his childhood reverie, the sound of the ocean in front of him made his eyes focus on the hues of blue again.
“Yoon Dowoon! Can you hear us, man?! We’re heading back to campus in 30 minutes.” One of his college buddies shouted from their spot in the sand.
“Alright!” Dowoon shouted in return. He would have loved to stay near the water for a few hours longer. The vacation he had at sea seemed far too short though he and his friends had been there settled in a nice beach house for a week.
Dowoon stood up and grabbed the large bucket he had next to him meant to hold as many seashells as he could find..
With his college life being so busy, he wasn’t sure when he would be able to visit the beach again deciding early on to take a few souvenirs back with him.
You blew bubbles excitedly as you swam through coral and bundles of seaweed. You dodged other fish while keeping your eyes on your little brothers who swam quickly behind you, they should have known you were going to win, you always do.
You arrived at the finish line which was your ocean home, swimming around in a circle, cheering.
“My darlings you’re home.” The familiar voice of your mother called out to you, her hand reaching out to grab you and your several siblings to take you inside. She was a beautiful woman, a sea witch with a human appearance that you often envied as you grew older. You dreamed of the day where you could use the magic passed on to you to take on a body besides the scaly one you were currently stuck with. You wanted to know what it was like to be a human being and explore the world above instead of down below.
If your father was around you were sure he’d allow you the opportunity to live and breathe on land and there would be nothing your mother could say to stop you. Sadly, he wasn’t around and hadn’t been for years, leaving his non-human wife and his half-blooded offspring for his scientific work.
If you were capable of frowning you would, you had been alive for so many years and your mother still treated you as if you were still in her womb.
It’s not like you were born with an aquatic body in the beginning of your life, you were actually born with a healthy human form, but due to your mother’s own fear of her children being exposed to the cruelness of other humans beside your father, she kept you and your siblings in the form of fish until she ready for you to become humanoid again. She was the cruel one.
“I hope you all had fun playing around, I’m about to leave so it’s time for you stay home now, the ocean isn’t safe when I’m not near.” She hummed.
You floated around her, blowing a set of bubbles she could decipher, a complaint about how you wanted to visit the land.
Your mother’s gorgeous features contorted into a frown and she spoke to you, shielding you in a bubble you wouldn’t be able to escape until she returned.
“No, no. You can’t break free, you’re the oldest but that doesn’t mean you can do what you please.” She kissed the bubble you were in and bid her good byes to your little brothers who got to swim around freely, leaving you trapped.
You pleaded with your brothers to help get you free and like good siblings they came to your aid, huddling their little bodies together to break the solid bubble you were in with their combined magical abilities.
You were free in seconds, feeding off their little powers to make a dramatic escape from your ocean home, using a school of fish to guide you toward the shore. You were finally going to get a glimpse of land and promised to enjoy the moment before the news got back to your mother that you were gone. You floated up, peeking your little head above the water, spotting a giant figure who hadn’t noticed you.
It was a human man with dark hair. He was picking shells from shallow waters and sand, putting them in a thing you had never seen before.  You watched his handsome face, he had a serene look in his eye and then his head turned and he spotted you. Nervous you dipped your head back into the water and began swimming around in a circle hoping he’d ignore you. He was beautiful and you were simply trapped in the body of a fish. At least if you were a mermaid you’d have a better chance at falling in love.
“How’d you get here…?” You heard the vibrations of his heavy voice through the waters and saw the shadows of him around you. You glanced up unable to run away, you weren’t scared of him but drawn to him, wishing you could touch him just once.
The male moved his foot and yelled, wincing in pain. His foot had snagged a sharp rock in the water that made him bleed. The red fluid tainted the water, a bit managing to get into your mouth. The taste of his blood gave you an lively feeling and he probably didn’t notice how your body emitted a soft glow afterward.
“Shit… that hurt.” Dowoon mumbled to himself as he wiped at the small cut on the bottom of his foot. He eased his foot back into the water carefully, hoping the pain would stop soon. His eyes dropped to the clear water where the little fish remained. It was odd, fish would usually flee if something unknown to them had come near.
“You’re an odd one... and a beauty,” Dowoon spoke to the fish as he kneeled to get a better look at its colors. The fish swam around in a circle but still didn’t flee. Dowoon admired its beauty. The fish looked as though it belonged to the goldfish species an odd mix of a veil tail and a pompom, reminding him of the pets he used to have as a child.
Dowoon stuck his hand into the water and held it out toward the fish, his eyes widening when it swam to his palm. “Whoa…” He removed his hand and stood to walk back to his bucket, emptying the seashells he had collected up until now into the sand. He rinsed the bucket clean with ocean water and filled it up. It was strange, but there was something that urged him to take a chance and bring the unique little fish back with him. No matter what, he would make sure it survived.
He stuck his hand back into the water and opened his fingers revealing his palm for the fish to swim to again. Dowoon’s lips curled into a smile when the fish happily swam to him and carefully he placed it into the bucket.
“Dowoon let’s get going!” He heard one of his friends call out to him. Dowoon nodded his head as he hurried to the shore again.
“Alright! Coming!”
The trip home was about an hour long and his friends teased him about bringing home a fish they knew wouldn’t survive for very long. Dowoon ignored them as he held his bucket steady making sure no water spilled, keeping his eyes locked on his new friend. He bid his friends good bye as they entered their dorms leaving him to walk down the hall toward his single dorm room.
Dowoon went into his bedroom and pulled out the small empty fish bowl he brought along with him when he moved into his room and cleaned it properly before setting it up again. Carefully he poured the seawater along with the  fish into the bowl, watching it swim around freely.
In the morning, he planned on taking the fish to see his professor who happened to be a retired marine biologist. Dowoon was hopeful that the old man could give him advice on how to take care of a salt water fish and maybe explain which species the beautiful creature belonged too.
He watched the fish swim, lips curving into a smile when it stared back at him. “I’ll call you Y/n…”
Dowoon went to sleep that night with dreams of the ocean. He could even smell the sea water as if he were near the beach again. While he slept soundly under the moonlight peeking through his blinds, he was unaware of the little fish that emitted a strong glow, wind rising in his room which soon disappeared in seconds.
The sun’s rays warmed his skin the next morning, but he didn’t want to get up just yet. Dowoon rolled over in his bed and cuddled up to something warm, fingers gripping onto something soft. His eyes remained closed but his brows creased, whatever was snuggling into him felt nice but if he remembered correctly he went to bed alone.
He opened his eyes slowly, dark orbs adjusting to the light that filled the room and the woman that lied sleeping in front of him.
Dowoon’s eyes widened tremendously. How did a woman get into his bed? There was no way someone would break in just to sleep with him.
The girl opened her eyes and stared at him sleepily, a small smile gracing her features. He didn’t have to look in the mirror to know his ears were a bright red, his heart beating quickly as he shot out of bed immediately.
“I uh… who are you?” He questioned her. He watched the girl sit up, his white bed sheet sliding down between her legs revealing her bare skin.
“I’m Y/n!” She smiled brightly causing his jaw to drop. Dowoon turned around when he realized how hard he was staring at the naked girl in his bed, his mind trying to process the name she just told him. That couldn’t have been her name, that was the name he gave the fish he brought home from the beach yesterday.
He turned his head slightly to the little fish bowl only to see that the fish was gone. An eerie feeling crept up his spine, urging him to turn around to face the woman again.
“Y/n...?” He spoke her name and she nodded her head with that beautiful smile of hers.
“Isn’t this great?! I’m a human now!” She cheered as she hopped out of bed, running over to grab his hands.
“Can I live with you forever?”
