Hysterectomy

What I Wish I Had Known Before & What to Expect

As the name suggests I’ve had a hysterectomy. It was a total hysterectomy, meaning removal of uterus, fallopian tubes, and cervix. It was done at the hospital I work at and by a surgeon that was recommended to me by most of my coworkers and who’s work I saw for myself before even going to her clinic. It was also minimally invasive meaning I had 4 small 3-inch-long incisions along my abdomen. So, in many ways I was privileged in this whole experience. From the support of my coworkers, my family, and the staff at the clinic to being able to take that time off without repercussions. 

Without boring you with details, until going to this clinic I was told over and over that the suffering I was experiencing during the monthly cycle was normal. For years I tried different medications and implants that failed (more on that here). So, on September 2 of 2022 my Doctor and I said enough was enough and it was time to yeet the damn thing.  

Immediately, I was in contact with HR, my boss, and state to make sure not only I could take the time off but that I would be paid during that time. Thankfully I have a compassionate boss who understood what was going on and pushed my paperwork through HR and then pushed them to send it to the state. While contacting the state, my case manager was a former coworker of mine who also pushed my paperwork through. Still, I will say this, if you are going to have this done, get your paperwork gather and summited as fast as possible. It will take weeks even months to get everything submitted and approved. Call your state about going on PLMA (parental leave and medical act). 

Now before you have the surgery, know what kind of procedure you are going to have. I had minimally invasive robotic surgery. So, I was able to come home not even 2 hours after waking up. But your surgeon might want to go a different route. If you are uncomfortable with it ask what your options are, can you change the surgeon? Your surgical team is to respect you, if you don’t feel that then don’t move forward. Now that is easy to say, especially when it went so easy for me. But I beg you take the time to educate and advocate for yourself. It will help you so much in all aspects of your life. 

Ask what medications you need to stop before hand and when! Not only medications but drinking alcohol or smoking weed or vaping/smoking. This also includes supplements. And make sure you get your aftercare medication well before hand. If like me you have back problems, if you don’t have a muscle relaxer get some from your primary care doctor. Set up wherever you are going to be recovering. Get electrolytes, soup, and gasX.

On the day of, when you show up have someone you love and trust with you. This is an emotional experience. Even if you never wanted children. Don’t have any metal on your body, and if you shave stop 2 days before. Wear baggy clothing that is comfortable. Bring your comfort items, I brought a small stuff snow leopard. Tell the staff you are anxious and stressed, get all the drugs they offer you. Its ok if you cry. 

When you wake up, you are going to hurt. Don’t be afraid to ask for painkillers and apple sauce or popsicles. Anastaisa intubation hurts at least for 3 days post. Those first 2 hours are going to be the worst pain. Try and pee as quickly as you can, and drink as much fluids as they offer. On discharge ask when you can take your next round of painkillers. 

Once you get home, go to sleep, put on a movie whatever just sleep. Continue to drink fluids as much as possible. If you have any form of laparoscopic your body will have gas inside, it from the surgery. It will hurt hence the gasX take as much as is recommended. Take your pills like clockwork. Try and shower as soon as recommended. Even if it's just getting under the water for a little bit. Keep wearing clean loose clothing. That first week is the hardest. You will question if you made the right choice and have an emotional rollercoaster. This is normal. My own got to its worst point around day 4. What helps is walking, talking with close friends or a therapist, having favorite food and drinks but remembering to eat healthy. Realize you might suddenly gain new triggers, for me anything mentioning pregnancy, or thoughts about how I no longer have these 4 organs inside my body. Work with your body about this. Take time and learn what you need to do to protect yourself especially in those critical first couple weeks and months.  

Something I experienced too was an inability to look at my own body. Seeing the glue that had blood trapped in it and the bruising was too much. This is especially hard because you need to look to make sure you're healing well. Take it slow, if you can have a trusted friend help if you can. Remember most of all is to not push yourself to your brink. Another thing is that first poop after surgy is hell, it will hurt, again gasX and vitamin C and stay regular about taking it as the medications you are given after can cause you to get backed up. 

Don’t push yourself. The 5lbs limit for lifting and pushing? Yea don’t go over it. That how I tore a couple abdominal muscles and was left with some numbness that has slowly begun to heal. Also, no penetrative sex until your surgeon says so. Your guts are currently being held inside with string and glue. Whatever your normal activities are (vacuuming, physical therapy, and ect) ask what you can and can’t do. Your body has been though trauma it needs to heal. 

Remember most of all to take care of yourself. It is frustrating to be so limited in so many ways. It will soon be over, and your life will return not only to normal but be even better. 

As one Redditor posted. The first 2 hours are the most painful, the first 2 days are the most critical for healing, the first 2 months are going to suck in general, but after the 6th month you should be able to return to pre-surgical activities to their full level, and at 1 year you will realize how much better you feel.

Международная ассоциация частных торговых марок (Private Label Manufacturers Association - PLMA) выяснила, что в прошлом году доля продукции под частными торговыми марками выросла на 1,2 процентных пункта до рекордных 37% от общего объёма рынка по сравнению с 2021 годом. Продажи таких товаров в 17 европейских странах выросли до 302 млрд евро. Европа остаётся одними из крупнейших рынков Private Label в мире. Это выяснили аналитики из NielsenIQ для Ежегодника частных торговых марок PLMA. Странами с самым интенсивным ростом доли частных торговых марок, в том числе на зоорынке, являются Чешская Республика (+3,5%), Португалия (+2,9%), Испания (+2,2%) и Венгрия (+2,2%). Лишь в Швейцарии наблюдалось незначительное снижение на 0,5 пункта. Но эта страна с самой высокой долей частных торговых марок в Европе, 52% в стоимостном выражении. Второе место занимают Нидерланды с общей долей стоимости 44%. Далее следуют Испания и Великобритания с 43%, Германия (40%), Португалия (39%), Бельгия (38%), Австрия (35%), Дания (34%), Польша и Франция (32%), Италия и Венгрия (28%), Швеция (27%), Греция (23%), Чехия (22%) и Норвегия (21%).
