Seriously tho if you haven’t seen it before you definitely should watch it! It’s all on YouTube and it’s a really goofy flash animated show! But unfortunately it wasn’t ever finished</3

Part two of my stroll down Internet animation lane.
Before Mondo Media became known for Happy Tree Friends, Dick Figures and Baman Piderman, they too used to embedded Flash files (because, as already pointed out, there wasn’t a YouTube). Their preferred method was syndicating their content to various websites--Netscape, NBC, Lycos, the Washington Post--so there was always somewhere to watch them if you knew where to look.
Thugs on Film and Heavy Metal Guy were a couple of my favorites of theirs (you can probably dig up old episodes on YT if you don’t know what they are) but then there was...Piki and Poko, an anime-inspired series centered around Zodiac signs and horoscopes and some such things. I had only just discovered anime when it came out, but looking back on it I can spot the cliches more clearly. The weird “dubbed” dialogue, the use of hammer space, the randomness (evil candy canes, singing snow globes, magical marshmallow Peeps--I didn’t get it either), the over-the-top cuteness of its main protagonists...
Also it had Martha Stewart as the villain.
Some hint of it constantly remained in the back of my mind (possibly out of disappointment that the story never finished) so that years later, when I was developing Nachos Con Carne, it bubbled to the surface in the form of Bonnie Shizumoto, the prettiest girl in school AND the most anime-inspired character of the lot. If you look on the first page of chapter nine, you’ll see a couple of star-motif ornaments hanging from her bedroom door, from those bracelet things they always wore.
Honestly, as weird as this show was, I wish we’d get stuff like this more often. I know Mondo has a show now called Riding Shotgun...I tried to watch it once, but the fan service put me right off. At least there’s Bee and Puppycat.

Inktober Day 11: Piki and Poko
Piki and Poko was an early 2000s flash series about magical girls. It was inspired by anime. It is also kind of proto-Steven Universe given the titular two characters had romantic feelings for each other and one genderqueer character. I chose these two characters because today was National Coming Out day.

Piki and Poko's Adventures in Starland is this really awesome and surreal web cartoon series about magical girls, les yay, astrology, sugar, and general weird shit. Unfortunately, it was never finished.
Why am I posting this? Because I just watched this first episode again and holy crap. 3L and I are Poko and Piki. WE'RE TOTALLY POKO AND PIKI. JUST LOOK AT THISSSSSSSS.
