AmeriCare Can Help With Pelvic Pain
Pelvic pain and pelvic floor dysfunction can be extremely painful, difficult to talk about, and tricky to identify without knowing how it presents and what may lead to it occurring. While pelvic pain can occur in both men and women, 1 in every 3 women are likely to experience a pelvic floor disorder in her lifetime. Given its prevalence, it’s important for women to know what pelvic pain is, how their pelvic floor functions, as well as how to seek help in relieving any pain or discomfort.
The Pelvic Floor
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that sit between the tailbone and the pubic bone. Together, they form a bowl-like support for the abdominal organs, maintain urinary and fecal continence, and allow for sexual function. These muscles work with your abdominal and back muscles and diaphragm to stabilize and support your organs and spine. When these muscles stop functioning properly, whether due to hypertonia or weakening of the muscles, it can be a source of pain and dysfunction.
What is Pelvic Pain?
Pelvic pain can be associated with a number of causes, and there is a range of pelvic floor disorders.
Potential Causes of Pelvic Floor Pain:
Muscle injury
Trauma from pregnancy/childbirth
Post Episiotomy
Psychological trauma
Sexual assault and/or abuse
Overexertion of the pelvic floor muscles
Atrophied muscles
Common Symptoms:
Urinary Urgency / Frequency
Pelvic Floor / Bladder Pain
Stress Incontinence
Vaginal and Sexual Pain
Pre and Post-partum Pain
Intense Pressure or Tightening
Lower back pain
If you think you may be dealing with a pelvic issue, you should seek medical care and treatment. While pelvic floor dysfunction and pain are common, they are not a normal way for the body to function, and these issues can strain one’s quality of life. Going to see someone who specializes in women’s health is a great starting point to getting the best care. Oftentimes, healing is best addressed with pelvic floor physical therapy.
At Americare Physical Therapy East Brunswick , we can help with treating pelvic pain.  With the right information and targeted care, rehabilitation will provide relief and healing. Having a healthy pelvic floor is likely to lead to overall better mental and physical health, which everyone deserves.
