Julius and Ruby Kane (faceclaims)
Julius Kane (Daniel Francis)
Ruby Kane née Faust (Lauren German)
Dr. Julius Kane was born in Los Angeles, California on July 17, 1966. He was a magician born to an ancient family line descended from Narmer, the first pharoh of a unified Egypt. Julius was the older brother of Amos Kane. He recieved his PhD in archeology in 1991. He was an expert in Egyptian history, mythology, magic and specialized in translating hieroglyphs.
Dr. Ruby Kane (née Faust) was born in London, England to a retired rugby player and his wife. She was born on May 12, 1966. The Faust family was descended from Ramses II and are powerful magicians, though they have not practiced magic for generations. At a young age, Ruby discovered she was a natural diviner (had the ability to see bits of the future). She became the first in her family, in a long time, to practice Egyptian magic. Ruby received a PhD in anthropology in 1991 and specialized in studying ancient DNA.
Julius and Ruby met in 1992 at a dig site in the Valley of the Kings. They married in 1994 and settled down in a beach house in L.A., where Ruby took a job as a professor of anthropology. On June 14, 1995 their son, Carter Kane, was born. Their daughter Sadie Kane was born on March 17, 1997. Julius was a stay at home father and wrote several books on Egyptian history. In winter of 2003, Ruby died in a magical related incident at Cleopatra's Needle in London. Julius fought very hard to keep custody of both of his children, but in the end Mr. and Mrs. Faust won custody of Sadie. Julius was allowed bi-annual visits. Six years later, Julius "died" in another magic related incident. He summoned the god Osiris and eventually became one with the god. Julius/Osiris now rules the Land of the Dead.

Imitation is the Best Form of Flattery....unless you’re Roman then you just take it
In modern Rome, there are 13 upright stone erections that are wildly familiar to anyone who has laid eyes on the Washington Monument in the United States. Tall, with four-sides which taper into point and strongly resembling a pencil, these obelisks are a symbol of the power and self-conception this city once had.  Eight of the statues still standing today are prizes thieved from a conquered Ancient Egypt, while the other five are ancient Roman imitations. Using an eponymous named shipping method, the Romans brought the monuments via the Nile and Mediterranean. The Roman ones are generally considered architecturally inferior, but strongly demonstrate the influence of Egypt, much like Greece, upon the Roman civilization.  Dispersed around this city, each individual obelisk has its own story about how it why it was constructed and its journey to present-day.
This Vaticano obelisk, now located in Saint Peter’s Square in Vatican City was constructed in Alexandria in the last decades BCE and bought to Rome by Caligula around 40 CE.  Its capping sphere was once rumoured to hold the ashes of Julius Caesar and today it has been moved to a national museum.  In 1586, it was moved one final time on the orders of Pope Sixtus V and today it is the only ancient obelisk that has never collapsed.

The Agnoalis (Pamphilius) obelisk is rises up from a beautiful base of personified representations of the world’s most important rivers.  One of the few Roman replicas, presently this one is located in the Piazza Navona and was actually built upon the preexisting Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi in 1651.  This one specifically was constructed with red granite and stands roughly ten stories (30 m.) tall.  Red granite was carried up the Nile on the orders of Emperor Domitian.  This connection to a later named tyrant led to transport for the obelisk.  It was moved in the 4th century, again in the 6th century, and finally in the 17th century Pope Innocent X put it back in its present location and christened with that pope’s symbol of a dove.
Tumblr media
Standing just outside of the famed Pantheon, not to be confused with the Greek Parthenon, the Macuteo obelisk is another pilfered Egyptian treasure.  Originally commissioned for the Temple of Ra in Egypt by Ramses II, this obelisk was also meant to adorn the Temple of Isis in Ancient Rome.  On all four sides, Egyptian hieroglyphics can be made out; some of the more lackluster engraving, however, is assumed to be attempted repair on the Roman part after the original bits.  Lost until the 14th century, it was named after the Piazza di San Macuto where it was found.  The star and crucifix were added later in the early 18th century by Baroque sculptor Filippo Barigioni.
Tumblr media
Again brought over by a Roman Emperor from Egypt, this time it was Emperor Augustus in 10 BCE.  He brought this obelisk and the Solare back from the sun temple of Heliopolis.  This specific obelisk was began by the father of Ramses II and completed by the son himself. Flaminio was erected at the Circo Massimo at first and discovered there in the 16th century.  Pope Sixtus V had it rebuilt at the Piazza del Popolo.  Measuring around 110 feet (32 m.) with the pedestal, inscriptions can still be made out on three of the sides recording life information about Horus, Seti I, and Ramses II.
Tumblr media
Originally Egyptian, commissioned by Pharoh Apries, this Minervo obelisk was brought to Rome by Diocletian for the Temple of Isis.  Under the papacy of Pope Alexander VII in 1655 it was placed upon the elephantine base designed in 1667.  Today this obelisk is located behind the Pantheon in the Piazza della Minerva.  The Santa Maria Sopra Minerva church also offers an interesting look at religious creativity and old style architecture.
Tumblr media
At the top of the Spanish steps, the Sallustian obelisk is roughly 45 feet tall (14 m.) and believed to be a copy of the Flaminio obelisk in the near by Piazza del Popolo.  It was once located in the Piazza di San Giovanni, where another obelisk was already standing, according to Pope Clemens XII in 1734.  Interestingly, at this site it was kept horizontal.  In 1789, however Pope Pius VI moved it to its current location.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A little sketched map roughly showing where these five obelisks are found in relation to one another.  I threw in a few other landmarks that were notable and YES! Zara and Prada are considered notable landmarks.
