This is a set of three long clip White Dot Lady Sheaffer models, c. 1968-1972, from the fall 2022 Pennant article “Late Production Lady Sheaffer Pens 1967-1989,” by Gary Ellison. These pens will have short conical nibs. The top pen is model 901, then model 902 and 903. Another throwback photo from 2004: This is a Parker 51 Signet Aerometric Demi fountain pen and pencil set with a 1/10 14 karat gold-filled cap and barrel c. 1949. The first Aerometric models are date coded 1948, though the launch was in 1949. The new filler unit that replaced the Vacumatic system is a clear “pli-glass” ink sac squeeze fill unit with a breather tube. The Signet was among three all metal Aerometric 51s introduced in 1949, along with the solid gold Presidential and the stainless steel Flighter. The engraving on the cap and barrel is three lines and a space. There is also a cartouche on the barrel for personalization. The Aerometric 51 was the top Parker pen until the introduction of the 61 in 1956. Handwriting will make you happy

To me, nothing is as immediate and as personal as the written word. Don’t get me wrong, I am no Luddite. I can type roughly 87 words per minute and I’ve been an early adopter of technology from as far back as my first x286 pc. I’ve had them all: Casio databanks; digital diaries; PDA’s and now smartphones. These tools all have their place and are immensely useful. But writing by hand is still sometimes faster, and more fun. But what to write about? Well, my advice is to begin by re-framing your concept of writing by hand.  Start by drawing a distinction between the act of writing as a creative process; and handwriting as a tool. In a more modern analogy, a notebook and pen is like a USB drive that you store things in when your main hard drive (i.e. your brain) is full. So use your handwriting as the tool it is. Use it as a means to expand your memory palace. A reliable,  additional brain you keep in your pocket to store stuff you’d like to come back to later. More to come, so do come back every now and again.
