Prison Religion bid to buck convention in the mould of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Wild Up lead with the babbling, burgeoning 'Joy Boy' on their second volume of works by the minimalist composer Julius Eastman, and Ashley Paul renders haunting smiles, fading thoughts, and tingling spines in the company of Otto Willberg and Yoni Silver. The São Paulo TORMENTA collective release their first psychedelic horror score through Nyege Nyege Tapes, and tracks by Harkin, Yaya Bey, Enumclaw, and Moor Mother also feature in this week's roundup of best new music.

Martin Clarke, Otto Willberg, Emil Karlsen – Shopping For Images (Open Ear Music, 2020) ****1/2

By Fotis Nikolakopoulos
For the past at least four to five years there’s a strong current of younger generation British improvisers working and producing wonderful results throughout all fields of improvisational musics. Smaller off the radar labels (like Luminous, Raw Tonk, Heave Petting and Tombed Visions to name a few) are hubs of exciting sounds that remind the listener the urgency…

Otto Willberg Keening CS (EM02, March 2016)
Solo double bass recordings from a player whose energy and chops see him much in demand in the worlds of free improvisation, big band psych-rock and electronic pop, to name but three. This release – his first on his own, to the best of my knowledge – is a three-piece suite of great depth and force that showcases remarkable extended technique and a highly percussive, interrogatory style.

insufferable improvisational music from Manchester. maybe i’m becoming one of the squares that this music inevitably challenges into a hasty reappraisal of what constitutes art. i am not about to do that: this is absolutely art. bad bourgeois art.
Radio Free Midwich claim that “Hair in the Chimney is an ultra-complex, lovingly-layered and nuanced peak into a virtually infinite system of sax, guitar and double bass techniques....and for that matter refreshingly free of improv cliché"
i am willing to try and unpack this paragraph because i am reasonably sure that it doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. i aver strongly that the notion of ‘ultra-complex’, implying calculation and forethought, stands in opposition to ‘improv’. the system of british railway infrastructure is ultra-complex. three lads rocking up to the studio without material refusing to play instruments in a conventional manner is not that.
‘lovingly-layered’ is silly given that most recorded music has multiple layers. please show me unlovingly-layered music or lovingly-unlayered music or unlovingly-unlayered music. perhaps this is pedantic of me but i feel, like this music, this statement is just excess verbiage spilling out to connote things that calm examination rejects.
but ‘virtually-infinite system’ is the most mockable and laughable contention. the system of possibilities here, RFM contend, stops just short of limitless. this is not even aleatory music, as we hear in and amongst the tedium, returns and expansions upon themes and techniques in the individual players.
also what is the system? it clearly rejects the western tonal system. fine. but is this indeed a system, a structure, a body of knowledge that can be parsed and reconstructed and passed on? grounded in an intellectual or mathematical basis that exists outside of the happenstance of this trio on this day? i reject this in the strongest possible terms.
this may feel like a review of the review but as a former traveller in these circles it is clear that the critical and performance community depicted as a venn diagram would consist of two circles placed almost perfectly over one another. these reviews enable the continued depoliticisation and disengagement of these increasingly irrelevant musicians. when many years later i realised that half of the Manchester improv scene had decamped to the rugged Calderdale wilds, part of me was glad and part of me felt sorry for the people of Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd, and Todmorden. reading into their scene, they spill ink by the barrel deciding whether to use Facebook or not and worry that its toxic culture might spill into their scene despite not realising that the music alone dropped free into every copy of The Sun would not make them any new fans.
as for “free of improv cliché”, well, i’ve heard this sort of smug bluster on three continents now. the guitarist hardly ever plays notes: he scrapes, pops, taps the body of his guitar. ditto the double bassist. the sax does anything but blow a note. it’s all in free time. the system it belongs to, in the most part, is a steadfast rejection of modern tonal systems and meter. it is entirely yoked to this dominant mode and cannot realise this unfreedom, which is why from a light remove Hair In The Chimney is like watching a caged animal constantly circling in its own filth. (1)
postscript: i read a bit deeper into RFM’s write-up of this record and they started with this:
That idea of complex gets a bad rap eh?  In a world where simplification and convenience are sleepwalking us into some sort of human stasis we often shove anything difficult or involved on to tomorrows ‘to-do’ list.
yeah that’s right shitmunchers, you can’t listen to 4/4 without becoming an automaton. FUUUUUUUUUCK OFFFFFFFFFFFF.
