Hi, I was wondering if you’ll ever make the old Patreon art/writing public since iirc you don’t intend to reactivate it for a long time? I was a member while it was active but I accidentally updated my app so I can’t view them anymore, I understand if you can’t/won’t though.
i can do that if people are interested! particularly thinking about those harvest festival snippets i wrote, those are well over a year (maybe even 2 years? time is fake) old and were on patreon the entire time & it's almost fall here... i say thru clenched teeth while it's still 100 degrees outside....
the majority of the snippets that were up were definitely like closing in on at least a year old so i do think it's been long enough and it would be fair to post them now... maybe i'll pick a random week and post them all one day at a time lmfao since iirc there's at least one for each companion (thinking specifically about the nsfw ones)
the art i don't plan to repost here though, mainly because i don't like it anymore 💀 but also because i dislike the way tumblr is handling their content moderation and i'm not interested in getting this blog flagged after 3 years because some human moderator decided my tasteful nude drawings of trans people (that 100% follow tumblr guidelines btw) are actually too offensive for their delicate constitution... but that's a whole other complaint for another post lmfao. i haven't had any issues at least with posting written nsfw so i'm less hesitant about posting that stuff instead.
but yeah i think maybe next month i can do the harvest festival snippets for october? i'll probably edit them a little bit since they're so old but i think that could be fun :-)

HPHM Profile~ Rose Tanaka
I took most of the revised template that @hogwartsmysterystory created, but made a few changes to get right to the gist of everything. If anything needs clarifying, let me know and I’ll fix things up.
Tumblr media
(image created by hufflepuffmystery on Instagram!)
Identity:
Name: Rose Tanaka
Gender: Female
Birth date: October 27, 1972
Age: 17 as of June 1, 1989
Blood Status: Half-Blood (mother was Muggleborn, father was a wizard)
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Alignment: Neutral Good
Ethnicity: Japanese
Nationality: Japanese
Residence: Osaka, Japan
MBTI: INFP
Magic capability:
Wand: Poplar with unicorn hair, 12 inches, quite bendy
Animagus?: In the canon game, Rose is a falcon animagus.
Magical Abilities: In the canon game, Rose is a legilimens.
Boggart/Riddikulus: Rose’s Boggart is not instantly visible, but she’s scared of the cold. She’s scared of the feeling of numbness within, and she’s scared of seeing even a little bit of frost spread over matter. In the Riddikulus form, the ice had dissolved into a swirling sparkling wind that gently lifted her hair and clothes, which, of course, made her laugh.
Mirror of Erised: The image that stares back at her is intriguing. She sees herself as an older woman with a broomstick in hand, wearing one of the Japanese Quidditch team uniforms--but at the same time she has a few books in her other hands that depicted titles that had nothing to do with Quiddtch...
Patronus: Rose’s Patronus in the game is a lop-eared bunny.
Patronus memory: Her Patronus memory would be of the time her grandmother took her to see the cherry blossoms when she was still very young--the time she spent with her grandmother was near and dear to her.
Amortentia: Rose smells chrysanthemum tea, parchment, fresh mown grass, and something minty. Anyone who smells her scent would smell cherry blossoms, fresh parchment, hot chocolate, and something like...hair dye.
Appearance:
Faceclaim: Satomi Ishihara
Tumblr media
Voiceclaim: Lea Salonga (may subject to change)
Game Appearance:
Tumblr media
Height: 5’6”
Weight: …?
Physique: Slim and fit, not a lot of muscle
Eye Colour: Brown
Hair Colour: Black (dyed dark blue in year 5)
Skin Tone: Pale
Body Modifications: N/A
Scarring: N/A
Inventory: (what do they carry on them?)
-a hair comb
-a few spare quills
-a plain black headband
-a photo of her as a baby and her family
Fashion: Rose tends to wear shirts with collars, so don’t expect her to be out of her school uniform for too long. On occasion she’d wear a hoodie and jeans, or anything traditionally worn by English girls of the time. Hey, just because she’s Japanese doesn’t mean she can’t learn about the English culture.

Closest canon friends: listed above
Closest MC friends: Emmett Chung
Familial relations:
Mother: Melissa Tanaka (nee Feng)
Melissa was born and raised in China by strict parents Rose never got to see. A hard worker at school and in her family home, she eventually got herself a job as a bank manager. She moved to Japan in hopes of settling trade issues between China and Japan--it was there where she met Rose’s father. She is now working as a representative of the Chinese national bank, and her consistent travelling between the two countries resulted in a lack of bonding between her children.
Father: Ashina Tanaka
Before Ryotaro Tanaka stepped foot into Mahoutokoro, Ashina went first. He was a good student at Mahoutokoro, but not a face everyone remembered so well; he constantly kept to himself and buried himself in his work all the time. The few friends he did have, he rarely kept connections with after graduating. Still, he took delicate care in everything he did, and eventually opened a shop where he made crafts and learned the old Japanese arts upon graduating.
Brother: Kyoru Tanaka
Kyoru Tanaka was Rose’s older brother who was first considered for Mahoutokoro but eventually chose to go to Hogwarts when his letter of acceptance arrived from that school. Despite the geographical distance he made the trips to and from King’s Cross work. Just like his father, Kyoru kept to himself a lot, and he made very few friends in his time there. Upon his imprisonment in the buried vault he thought nothing of the impact he left on the rest of his family.
Cousin: Cho Chang
Cho Chang is six years younger than Rose and aspires to be a good flier like her cousin. Though they never really met much she heard of her older cousin’s stories and eventually got sorted into Ravenclaw in her first year, when Rose was then made Head Girl.
Grandmother: Fei-Ying Tanaka
Rose was very close with her paternal grandmother who was just equally proud of her son and his achievements. When she was younger they would spend a lot of time together while Kyoru was in school, and from her grandmother she would learn how to read and write in Japanese, communicate and read and write in English, and understand more of her culture and her family history.
Background/History:
Rose lived a rather detached sort of life within her family when she was younger. The one person she had a firm relationship with at the time was her grandmother, who always took her out on trips to the park while teaching her many different things. Her father was busy manning the shop soon after Kyoru started to attend school, and as for her mother she barely saw her around a lot either. During this time, though, Rose did learn a few useful things from her father as well as her grandmother--she soon mastered the ancient art of origami and ink drawings.
Eventually, Kyoru went missing in the summer of 1982, and two years later Rose began to attend Hogwarts. Before September 1 every year, she would move to her aunt’s place and live with her cousin, Cho.
Hogwarts Mystery unfolded.
Upon graduation, Rose went back to Japan and at first contemplated on using her talents to teach at Mahoutokoro, but the memories she had of the wizard in white robes ambushing her on R’s orders were enough to make her refuse her placement. Instead, she sought a position on one of the Japanese Quidditch teams. She eventually was placed in the substitute roster on the Toyohashi Tengu as Seeker, but her exceptional talents on the pitch eventually bumped her up to the starting roster. She was eventually admitted to the Japanese National Quidditch team, and represented her country in the 1994 Quidditch Cup. Although the team did not make it into the final, she still revelled in her glory.
Well, that was, until Talbott reached out to her while she was recovering from minor injuries from the matches. She was hesitant to reach out to him in return, but remembering her promise to him she eventually started a correspondence with him.
Rose fought along with her peers at the Battle of Hogwarts and survived. After Hogwarts was fully rebuilt, she took over as the Flying Coach at Hogwarts, and then the Quidditch referee certified by the British Ministry of Magic, when Madam Hooch eventually retired.
Rose did not consider marriage throughout this time, but eventually she reconnected with Talbott and the flame reignited. They got married in early 1999. Current legacies undetermined.
Personality:
Rose is not at all like the rest of her family--much like her grandmother, she is understanding and patient with everyone she meets. Rowan was actually the first one to break through that shell the rest of her family had cast upon her, and she became much more open and friendly. She’s not afraid to get a little competitive at times with her peers, but it was all for fun in the end. Still, she knows well where her loyalties lie. She would snap shut if something upsets her, and break down if the situation bore too much pressure. Her way of venting involved making a lot of origami and writing in a small notebook--almost like a journal--or furiously writing essays that didn’t pertain to academics.
Misc:
Rose’s favourite colour is pink, but perhaps that came from the fact that she was literally named after a flower.
Rose and Tulip actually share a close kinship based on the fact that they were named after flowers. Admittedly, Rose was about to be named Blossom when she was born, but her father once surprised her mother with an elegantly painted origami rose which spurred the change of name before her birth.
Rose could make origami. She trained her patience through it.
Despite Rose not warming up to flying at first, she eventually became really good at it and so continued to foster her talents in that subject area.
More to come…?

The error occurs when authentication between Outlook and Exchange server fails due to corrupt profile, damaged or inaccessible OST file, synchronization issues, etc. Outlook, when configured with Exchange server profile in Cached Exchange Mode, creates an OST or Offline Folder file.
This OST file is encrypted with a unique MAPIEntryID GUID key, which is stored in the registry of your local system and Exchange server. Although Outlook OST file allows users to work even when the system is offline, it needs to authenticate the user profile by matching the MAPIEntryID GUID key with the server mailbox at least once to allow access to OST and Outlook profile.
However, when this authentication fails, Outlook cannot connect to the Exchange server mailbox and displays the following or similar error message. Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot Open Outlook Window. The set of folders cannot be opened. ost cannot be accessed. You must connect to Microsoft Exchange at least once before you can use your Outlook data file. You can fix Outlook not connecting to server issues in Windows by following the given methods. These methods work on Outlook , , , , and However, you should backup your OST file to a safer location before applying these methods.
This will help prevent permanent data loss if these fixes do not work for you. IMPORTANT NOTE: If your mailbox is disabled or deleted from the server, the following solutions will not work.
In such a case, the OST file enters the orphaned stage and becomes inaccessible. However, you can convert such OST file to PST or export the OST file directly to a new or existing live Exchange mailbox or Office account using Stellar Converter for OST. The tool can also help you restore missing or deleted mail items.
A simple system restart can sometimes do magic! It can resolve issues with Windows and other applications. So begin by restarting your system. Then check the internet connection and start Outlook. If you still see the same error message and Outlook cannot connect to the server, follow the next method. Incompatible or faulty Outlook add-ins may prevent or disrupt Outlook connection with the Exchange server.
To check if the error is caused by a faulty add-in, follow these steps:. If the error is resolved, activate each add-in, one-at-a-time, and observe Outlook for the error. This will help you find and remove the faulty add-ins. Outlook may fail to connect to the Exchange server due to authentication failure, if your profile gets damaged. In such a case, you can create a new Outlook profile to fix the error.
The steps are as follows:. Now open Outlook, choose the new Outlook profile and configure it. Then check if you can access the Outlook and mailbox items from the OST file. If not, head to the next method. Damaged or corrupt Microsoft Outlook or Office program files can also lead to connectivity errors.
You can resolve this by repairing or reinstalling the MS Office program. Now try opening MS Outlook. If this does not resolve Outlook cannot connect to server issue, you can try reinstalling the MS Office. You may also download the MS Office setup and install it manually. Then open the MS Outlook, configure your email profile, and check if your Outlook is now connecting to the Exchange server and working.
If not, follow the next method. If the above solutions did not work for you, try recreating the Outlook data file, i.
You can do this by either deleting, moving, or renaming the current OST file. However, the OST file location may vary based on the Outlook version. For more details, check our guide to locate the OST file.
Once found, delete, move, or rename the file with the. old or. bak extension. Now open Outlook. If your profile and the mailbox on the server are still active, a new OST file will be created and mail items will be synchronized from the server.
But if the OST file is not recreated, it indicates a disabled or deleted mailbox or profile. Then import the PST file into your new Outlook account. The error prevents you from accessing the Outlook account and mailbox items as it fails to connect to the Exchange server. In such a case, you can convert the backup OST file to PST using Stellar Converter for OST.
Then import the converted PST into your new Outlook or Exchange profile and restore your mail items. The software also provides options to import the mail items from orphaned or inaccessible OST directly into a live Exchange mailbox or Office account.

Program 1033
There are plenty of people out there that will argue that the militarization of local police departments has not only saved lives, but it is yet another example of the successes we enjoy in a free market economy. After all, there is a surplus of people killers and local law enforcement officers have people to kill—why not?
Satire, of course, but is it? The 1033 program has been the source of a great deal of scrutiny, especially as of late, and I am curious about it. The thought of the program bothers me, especially as I learn more about it. For example, The DLA (Defense Logistics Agency) website provides insight into the program, including the procurement process of military grade equipment—"LESO (Law Enforcement Support Office) relies on the state coordinator’s judgement in determining the rationale for a law enforcement agency’s request for property through the program, based on the size, mission and scope of the requesting law enforcement agency, and local considerations.” Local considerations? —Yeah, I’ll table that for now, but as I learn more about the program, I hope to find that the deciding factor in militarizing local police departments isn’t the whim of an hourly admin somewhere, but ever the cynic, I’m not holding my breath.
Tumblr media
(Visual via openthebooks.com)
My skepticism aside, I intend on weighing all sides and have no intention of drawing some all-encompassing conclusion that’s going to blast your nips off. I’ll try my best not to alienate anyone, but this topic is clearly a polarizing one, and it doesn’t help that social issues fog up the glass. Of course if you are against police overreach--brutality, we’ll call it--the idea of military grade equipment making it into the hands of local 5-0 is terrifying. Likewise, if you believe that the wars on drugs and terrorism are being fought in the small towns of this country, and that they are being won (or need reinforcements) then you are likely to welcome the investment.
Program 1033 was not designed simply to get Andy Griffith and Barney Fife rocket launchers and an Apache helicopter. The program deals with office equipment, computers, clothing, and other non-lethal supplies in addition to the more infamous shit. In that regard, I think most people would see it as fiscally responsible, more like hand-me-down toys and clothing. Making use of things that would otherwise rot in a warehouse somewhere seems reasonable enough. According to a paper from the American Economic Journal back in 2017, more than half of the 8000 law enforcement agencies (LEA’s) that have utilized the program, more than half used it to procure clothing and office supplies. This paper provides extensive research on The Effect of Police Militarization on Crime and I would strongly encourage you to follow that link to read it for yourself.
Tumblr media
You may not be invested enough to click the link and if I told you that it is a breathy scientific paper, you’d probably be even less likely. If that happens to be the case, let me save you the effort and give you the ass end of their conclusions:
Our results seem to suggest that the returns per dollar spent on the margin to capital might be even higher than for labor, and this is an issue that certainly deserves further empirical research. That said, taken together, our results do not directly provide evidence in favor of or against the possibility that military equipment contributes to overly aggressive approaches by police units, which can in turn escalate to a standoff between urban communities and the officers that police them. This is a social cost that our analysis cannot duly capture and it is an important point for future research.
I had to read through it a couple times, but eventually I could understand almost all of the words they used to describe how they studied the topic and arrived at their conclusions—fascinating stuff. Basically, “it seems that military aid does not improve the arresting performance of local police units, thus revealing that it most likely helps to deter individuals from participating in illegal activities in the first place.” (Same paper, duh)
Assumptions are safe, right? Let’s assume that the data found in Bove and Gavrilova’s work is accurate—that the vast majority of requests are for non-lethal equipment and that this equipment has a negligible effect on certain aspects of crime, aside from officer visibility impacting those who may be fixing to steal a car. Seeing cops in armored vehicles likely has an effect on those who would otherwise commit crimes, but as Bove and Gavrilova discover, the equipment neither impacts arrest rates, nor does it effect injury to officers. Visibility is good, at least insofar as its impact on lower-level crimes, but the US military seems to feel the need to draw the line with regard to visibility, or at least seem to understand the repercussions: “That uniform is designed to blend into terrain, not to make you look like a warrior, they're wearing these uniforms as a function of intimidation to look like warriors.” - Retired US Army Gen. Russel Honoré, [email protected] (David Choi) Business Insider July 22, 2020 (HERE). Candidly, the article I just quoted does not reference Program 1033, but rather the Federal agents being deployed by the Trump administration to beat up protesters and black bag them into unmarked minivans. I am using it to illustrate the perception of militarized police. Plus, supporters of 1033 need a way to discredit this information and what better way than with arbitrary snips plucked for my convenience.
Tumblr media
Back to the point, it would appear that there is some measurable good that comes from 1033, but measurable is a hilarious way to put it, as one of the main problems seems to be record keeping. Bove and Gavrilova as well as other sources you’ll hear from later found that very little has been done to ensure accurate record keeping of the equipment being turned over. Problematic, but that is something that can be addressed. Perhaps if there were thorough records, studying the effects would be easier, but humans be human.
The program clearly has a niche with regard to certain types of equipment, but what are some of the broader effects, those not necessarily measurable? Jonathan Mummolo, a political scientist at Princeton University who focuses on policing, thinks that, “What programs like 1033 have done is given people the equipment to carry out operations that are traditionally done by tactical teams that otherwise would not have been able to obtain it. That is for sure not always accompanied by extensive training. There’s just a lot of variation in policing standards across the board.”” Wired article by Brian Barrett (HERE). Barrett continues:
“In 2018, Princeton’s Mummolo published research showing not only that special weapons and tactics teams are deployed more often in communities of color, but that they on average “provide no detectable benefits in terms of officer safety or violent crime reduction.” Which is a point that often gets lost: While the high-profile responses to police brutality demonstrations draw more attention to the 1033 program and others like it, in many parts of the country its impacts are a staple of policing.” Wired article by Brian Barrett (HERE)
The result of Mummolo’s research is very similar to Bove and Gavrilova’s in that it showed no benefit to officer safety and had little to no effect on violent crime. The problem as I see it, is that the program may well have some positive impact, but the repercussions of its social implications seems to make the juice not so worth the squeeze.
Tumblr media
(Visual via New York Times)
President Obama, in the wake of police response in Ferguson, MO after Michael Brown was killed by a police officer, dialed back the type of equipment available through the program, banning the exchange of: “grenade launchers, tracked armored vehicles, armed aircraft, guns, and ammunition of .50 caliber or higher, and restrictions to the transfer of wheeled armored vehicles, drones, helicopters, firearms, and riot gear, to ensure that officers are trained in their use (Washington Post May 18, 2015). President Donald Trump removed those restrictions, likely because he was in the pocket of the FOP, but I digress. Look, Obama banned a few specific things and to be honest, we probably could have left it at that. Why local cops need F-15’s escapes me. Hyperbole? Of course, there are no F-15’s in the program, but you don’t think Sheriff Arpaio would requisition one? You get my point whether you agree or not.
Just this month (July 2020) people are working to address Program 1033. It’s a Huff Post article so Conservatives pinch your nose:
“Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) introduced an amendment this month to the annual defense bill, trying to reform the program by prohibiting tear gas, armor-piercing firearms and ammunition, bayonets, grenades, grenade launchers, combat tracked vehicles, and drones from getting in the hands of police. The proposal would also have instituted transparency to the program by creating a website to track the transfer of property under the 1033 program.” Igor Bobic, Huffpost article (HERE)
I know that due to partisan muckery, we will likely never come to a reasonable agreement about what to do with this program. Dem’s will dial it back to appease their base, and the GOP will reinstate (or bolster) it for the same reason. I learned a lot about the program and the good that it can bring, but at what cost? When the program was reinstated to its original form, it pissed people off—we know this—but the reason is what I would like to leave you with:
“These guidelines were created after Ferguson to ensure that police departments had a guardian, not warrior, mentality. Our communities are not the same as armed combatants in a war zone. It is especially troubling that some of this equipment can now again be used in schools where our children are sent to learn. … Most in law enforcement understand why these guidelines and this approach to policing are critical to rebuilding trust with the communities they serve, especially communities of color, and also to reducing the risk of violence in our communities.” Vanita Gupta, the former head of the civil rights division of the Justice Department in the Obama administration via Tom Jackman, Washington Post article (HERE)
 Stay Tuned.

Misconceptions - Why Stoke-On-Trent should be proud of Robbie Williams
Most people who know me are aware that i’m a Robbie Williams fan. I have been since the 90’s and his days in Take That. Aside from being from Stoke, ( I am connected to Stoke with my family and spent a huge chunk of my childhood & teens there ) I kind of ‘got’ him, slightly mental but very clever. Far more so than he credits himself for.
Today I was on BBC Radio Stoke again to talk all things superfans. I don’t consider myself a ‘superfan’ in the way that some may label, but i’m a fan non the less. The discussion surrounded the question ‘Why doesn’t Robbie Support Stoke More’. Rob hails from an area of Stoke called Burslem, otherwise known locally as The Mother Town of the 6 areas that makes up the city, and sadly just like alot of areas has been hit by decline. Stoke is famous for its pottery, and as manufacturing has left the area over the years so has a huge chunk of the city’s income. If you believed some of the newspapers and (some) locals, its Rob’s duty to support the City. HE should be doing MORE to support his fellow stokies and be giving chunks of cash straight from his pocket. Just to name a few things he has done for the city in the past –
*Invested his own money in local football club Port Vale
*Give it Sum – £6 Million of his own money to the area via his foundation
* Donating his own tour clothing, awards and more to the RWFanfest organisation where events bring tourism each year to his home town to support The Donna Louise Trust of which he is patron. Total is now at 60k for that charity alone.
*High profile & public auctions of personal belongings and legendary pop memorabilia supported by Bonhams. All money to charity.
*£30k of his own money towards Sneyd Children’s Park
There are a whole ton more that went under the radar. More than I could fit on this page. Rob doesn’t shout about his charitable & city contributions because that’s not his bag. Is that the problem? now that social media has such a great impact on peoples lives maybe that’s how the negative comments can be disproved with factual stories of his kindness and giving. Is there a journalist or reporter willing to take on the task of writing a comprehensive and informative article about everything he has done for the city? Maybe I will do it myself.
It makes me sad that a small amount of people cannot see past the negative media stories. He shouldn’t be expected to have a blank cheque ready to fix the city problems. What do these people want him to do exactly? i’ve yet to hear anyone be specific about that – you cannot throw money at something when you have no clue exactly what you’re throwing it at? Does he knock on Mrs Jones door down his old street with a huge paper faux cheque and his cheeky grin? Stoke needs more than 1 man and his back catalog of hits to regenerate it. He has a job and a family just like the average man, the difference being he is incredibly well paid for it and famous to boot, if the shoe were on the other foot would YOU be willing to fix all the problems of your home town? Stoke is a big city – over 469,000 across the borough’s – so he will never please every one of them. But I really believe he has had such a massive impact on the percentage of people that his money has touched. Employment of nurses and carers needed for children that won’t live into adulthood. Income to public houses, hotels, pubs and local business profiting from the tourism generated from local events in his name. His work goes further and beyond what you see on the surface. The press and media can do wonderful things but sometimes they choose not to, instead fueling misconceptions that don’t deserve to be so wildly thrown about.
Putting aside all the monetary aspects, he has done so much more for the people of Stoke. He has given hope to artists, musicians, performers – hope that you can come from a small town and be a big success. Imagine what would happen if all those inspired and talented people became rich and famous? they too are likely going to be proud of their city that nurtured their talent and supported them, but right now all I can see with all these negative assumptions of Rob is that it casts a real downer on creatives trying to make something of themselves – they need the belief of their people around them more than ever right now.  Lemmy was a famous Burslem born son, Slash also hails from the city and they never get half the grief that Rob gets.  I cannot help but wonder why this is.
Maybe you’ll want to go and research this a bit more yourself. I don’t write this as a fan trying to convert anyone to also become one, or even to justify why so many of us are willing to support what he does, I write from a respectively informed point of view and facts.
I hope that even if 1 person changes their thoughts then they will encourage others to at least look beyond the end of their noses and really look at what this man has brought to such a vibrant and welcoming city. The people of Stoke truly are the nicest you’ll ever meet, and every single one I know personally is proud of Mr Williams. I’m looking forward to sharing more of my own RW journey with everyone, maybe I’ll make them proud too!

William Zebina Ripley, The Races of Europe: A Sociological Study, 1899
Page 49: Is there any doubt that were, as in our own Southern States, two races are socially divided from one another, the superior would do all in his power to eliminate any traces of physical similarity to the menial negroes? Might not the Roman nose, light hair and eyes, and all those prominent traits which distinguished the master from the slave, play an important part in constituting an ideal of beauty which would become highly effective in the course of time? So uncultured a people as the natives of Australia are pleased to term the Europeans, in derision, “tomahawk noses,” regarding our primary facial trait as absurd in its makeup. Even among them the “consciousness of kind” cannot be denied as an important factor to be dealt with in the theory of the formation of races.
Page 107: Experience proves that the vast majority of the population of this continent shows evidence of crossing, so that in general we cannot expect that more than one third of the people will be marked by the simplest combination of traits. We need not be surprised, therefore, that if we next seek to add a third characteristic, say the shape of the head, to a normal combination of hair and eyes, we find the proportion of pure types combining all three traits in a fixed measure to be very small indeed. Imagine a fourth trait, stature, or a fifth, nose, to be added, and our proportion of pure types become almost infinitesimal.
Page 121: The first of our races is perhaps the most characteristic. It is entirely restricted to northwestern Europe, with a center of dispersion in Scandinavia. Each of the other types extends beyond the confines of the continent, one into Asia, the other into Africa. Lapouge’s name of Homo Europeus is by no means inapt for this reason. Our portraits, chosen as typical by Dr. Arbo of the Norwegian army, show certain of the physical peculiarities, especially the great length of the head, the long oval face, and the straight aquiline nose. The face is rather smooth in outline, the cheek bones not being prominent. The narrow nose seems to be a very constant trait, as much so as the tendency to tall stature. This race is strongly inclined to blondness. The eyes are blue or light gray, and the hair flaxen, tawny, reddish, or sandy. The whole combination accords exactly with the descriptions headed down to us by the ancients. Such were the Goths, Danes, Norsemen, Saxons, and their fellows of another place and time. History is thus strictly corroborated by natural science.
Page 122: A distinctive feature of the Teutonic race, which we have not yet mentioned, is its prominent and narrow nose. This is notable, in general, as a fact of common observation, but it is very difficult of anthropometric proof. The range of individual variation in the fleshy parts seems to be very great, even in the same race. There is some indication, moreover, that the nasal bones are influenced by the structure of the face. The lack of any international agreement as to the system of measurement renders statistical comparisons doubly difficult. Nevertheless, enough has been done to show that from the north of Europe, as we go south, the nose betrays a tendency to become flare and more open at the wings. Especially where the Alpine and Teutonic types are in contact do we find the flatter nose of the broad-headed race noticeable. Arbo has observed it in the southwestern corner of Norway. House proves it for Belgium in a comparison of Flemings and Walloons; it is certainly true in France that the Teutonic elements are more leptorhim (narrow-nosed) than the Alpine. The association of a tall stature with a narrow nose is so close as to point to a law.
Page 123: Italy shows a regular increase in frequency of the broad and flat nose from north to south; and Colingon’s law of the association of the form of nose to stature seems again to be confirmed. From this point south, even from the Mediterranean coast in Tunis toward the interior, the broad and open form of nose, extremely developed in the negro race, becomes more common. Our Sardinian portraits, compared with those of the various Teutonic types, will strongly accentuate this change. A distinct, though distant affinity of the Mediterranean stock with the negro is surely the only inference to be drawn from it. Our second racial type is most persistently characterized by the shape of the head. This is short and at the same time broad. The roundness is accompanied by a broad face, the chin full, and the nose rather heavy. These traits are all shown more or less clearly in our portraits of the Austrian German, and of the two Bavarian peasants.
Page 151: The people of the inland villages contain a goodly proportion of the Alpine stock; although, as our maps show, it is more attenuated than in either Savoy or Auvergne. To the eye this Alpine lineage in the pure Breton appears in a roundness of the face, a concave nose in profile, and broad nostrils.
Page 152: Our Normans show plainly the elongated face and the high and thin nose so peculiar to them. The varying degrees of ethnic intermixture and their distribution will be seen from an examination of our maps.
Page 154: The Norman nose is high and thin; the nose of the Breton is broader, opening at the nostrils. This difference is no less marked than the contrast in the contour of the face and the general proportion of the head.
Page 173: In our Dordogne peasant there are many other minor features which need not concern us here. The skull is very low-vaulted; the brow ridges are prominent; the nose is well formed, and leas broad at the nostrils than in the Alpine type. These, coupled with the prominent cheek bones and the powerful masseter muscles, give a peculiarly rugged cast to the countenance. It is not, however, repellent; but more often open and kindly in appearance.
Page 175: The skull was elongated at the back in the same way — a distinguishing trait which appears prominently upon comparison of the profile view of a modern Cro-Magnon type with that of its Alpine neighbors, as we have already observed. The brows were strongly developed, the eye orbits were low, the chin prominent. The noted anthropologist, De Quatrefages, prophesied what one of these types ought to look like in the flesh. I give his description in his own words, that its agreement with the facial type above represented may be noted: “The eye depressed beneath the orbital vault; the nose straight rather than arched, the lips somewhat thick, the maxillary (jaw and cheek) bones strongly developed, the complexion very brown, the hair very dark and growing low on the forehead — a whole which, without being attractive, was in no way repulsive.”
Page 193: Examine our Basque portraits collected from both slopes of the Pyrenees. They appear in two series in this chapter. At once a peculiar characteristic is apparent in nearly ever case. The face is very wide at the temples, so full as to appear almost swollen in this region. At the same time the chin is very long, pointed, and narrow, and the nose is high, long, and then. The outline of the visage becomes almost triangular for this reason. This, with the eyes placed somewhat close together, or at least appearing so from the breadth of the temples, gives a countenance of peculiar cast. It resembles, perhaps, more than anything else the features of so-called infant prodigies, in which the frontal lobes of the brain have become over-developed. This resemblance is only superficial. These people are notably hardy and athletic. “To run and jump like a Basque” has become a proverb in France.
Page 202: The development of a facial type peculiar to certain localities is by no means a rare phenomenon. We shall have occasion to call attention to it later in other portions of Europe, particularly where isolation prevails. The form of the nose, the proportions of the face, nay, at times the expression, seem to be localized and strongly characteristic. Thus among the Finnic peoples in Russia, however much they may differ in head form, a characteristic physiognomy remains. It is easy to conceive of artificial selection in an isolated society whereby choice should be exercised in accordance with certain standards of beauty which had become generally accepted in that locality.
Page 217: Thus we pass from a head form identical with that of the Scandinavians, to one in the south in no wise distinguishable from the Swiss, the Austrian, and other Alpine types in France and northern Italy. Our three accompanying portraits on the next page will serve to illustrate this gradual change of physical type.
Page 218: The pure, unmixed Alpine race finds its expression in the plateaus of Bavaria and Württemberg, in the Schwarzwald, the Rauhe Alp, and parts of the Thüringerowald. such is our third type, with its rounded face and skull fore-shortened from front to back. Our representative here photographed was dark brown both in hair and eyes, nose rather irregular, less finely molded perhaps; certainly considerably broader at the nostrils than in the Teutons. At the same time the stature was short, only five feet one inch and a half, with a correspondingly stocky figure. The facts speak for themselves. There can be no doubt of two distinct races of men.
Page 272: Here in Sardinia stature descends to the very lowest level in all Europe, almost in the world. Livi assures us that it is entirely a matter of race, a conclusion from which we have already taken exception in our chapter on Stature. To us it means, rather, that population has always gone out from the island and never in, thus leaving today nothing but the dregs, s to speak. At all events, whether a result of unfavorable environment or not, this treat is very widespread today. It seems to have become truly hereditary. It extends over fertile and barren tracts alike. In other details also there is the greatest uniformity all over the island — a uniformity at an extreme of human variation be it note: for this population is entirely free from all intermixture with the Alpine race so prevalent in the north. It betrays a number of strongly African characteristics, which are often apparent in the facial features. The flattened nose, with open nostrils, thick lips, and retreating foreheads are all notable in a remarkable series of portraits, which Dr. Livi courteously placed at our disposition. These details, with the long and narrow face, are represented in our two portraits reproduced in this chapter. Imagine the black hair and eyes, with a stature scarcely above five feet, and a very un-European appearance is presented.
Page 276: Aranzadi believes the very prevalent “honey-brown” eyes of the southwest quarter of Spain and Granada, to be due perhaps to strong Moorish influence. And the effect of a Moorish cross is also apparent in producing a broader and more African nose, according to the same authority. Beyond this the permanent influence of the foreigner has been slight. The varied experiences of Portugal with the English and French invasions, seems to have left no permanent effects.
Page 330: The most characteristic facial feature of the old British populations, be they Scotch, Irish, Welsh, “old black breed,” or bronze age, as compared with the Anglo-Saxon, is irregularity and ruggedness. The mouth is large, the upper lip broad, the cheek bones prominent. In the bronze-age type, as we have seen, the nose is large and prominent. In most of the other earlier types it is oftener merely broad at the nostrils, sometimes snubbed, as in our younger black-breed Shetlander at page 302; not often very delicately formed.
Page 278: The physical traits of these Berbers are at once apparent by reason of their isolation from all admixture with the other ethnic types of Europe. The distinctively long, narrow face appears in most of our subjects, although the broad-faced, disharmony Cro-Magnon type is quite generally represented. In many cases the slightly concave nose in profile is characteristic, suggesting the negro.
Page 331: Footnote: Cf. Barnard Davis, 1867, p. 70, cited by Beddoe, 1870: “The most distinctive features of the western Irish are seen to be derived from the strongly mark superciliary ridges, extending across the nose, making a horizontal line, upon which the eyebrows are placed and overhanging the eyes and face.”
Page 332: One more facial type needs to be mentioned. It is commonest in Kent and in the Isle of Wight. It is generally ascribed to a Jutish ancestry. Our two upper portraits at page 316 represent this adequately enough. These people are darkish in complexion. The principal peculiarity is their convexity of profile from chin to forehead. The lips are rather thick; the nose is difficult to describe, unless we can agree to call it Jewish. Whether we may, indeed, accept it as Jutish, for we are accustomed to regard the Jutes as near relatives of the Anglo-Saxons, is matter of question. It is certainly a noticeable type in the south and east of England, where Jutish settlements were common.
Page 386: Vogt in his Lectures on Man assumes the Polish type to be descended from Hindu sources, while the Spanish alone he held to be truly Semitic. Weisbach gives us the best discretion of the Sephardim Jew as today found at Constantinople. He is slender in habit, he says; almost without exception the head is “exquisitely” elongated and narrow, the face a long oval; the nose hooked and prominent, but thin and finally chiseled; hair and eyes generally dark, sometimes, however, tending to a reddish blond. This rufous tendency in the Oriental Jew is emphasized by many observers. Dr. Beddoe found red hair as frequent in the Orient as in Saxon England, although later results do not fully bear it out. This description of a reddish Oriental type corresponds certainly to the early representations of the Savior; it is the type, in features perhaps rather than hair, painted by Rembrandt — the Sephardim in Amsterdam being familiar to him, and appealing to the artist in preference to the Ashkenazim type. This latter is said to be characterized by heavier features in every way. The mouth, it is alleged is more apt to be large, the nose thickish at the end, less often clearly Jewish perhaps.
Page 394: Secondly, as to the nose. Popularly the humped or hook nose constitutes the most distinctive feature of the Jewish face. Observations among the Jews in their most populous centers do not, however, bear out the theory. Thus Majer and Kopernicki, in their extended series, found only nine percent of the hooked type — no greater frequency than among the Poles; a fact which Weissenberg confirms as to the relative scarcity of the convex nose in profile among his South Russian Jews. He agrees, however, that the nose is often large, thick, and prominent. Weisbach measured the facial features of nineteen Jews, and found the largest noses in a long series of people from all over the earth; exceeded in length, in fact, by the Patagonians alone. The hooked nose is, indeed, sometimes frequent outside the Jewish people. Olechnowiz found, for example, over a third of the noses of the henry in southeast Poland to be of this hooked variety. Running the eye over our carefully chosen series of portraits, selected for us as typical from four quarters of Europe — Algeria, Russia, Bosnia, and the confines of Asia — representing the African, Balkan, Spagnuoil, and Russian Ashkenazim varieties, visual impressions will also confirm our deduction. The Jewish nose is not so often truly convex in profile. Nevertheless, it must be confessed that it gives a hooked impression. This seems to be due to a peculiar “tucking up of the wings,” as Dr. Beddoe expresses it. Herein lies the real distinctive quality about it, rather than in any convexity of outline. In fact, it often renders a nose concave in profile, immediately recognizable as Jewish. Jacobs has ingeniously described this “nostrility,” as he calls it, by the accompanying diagrams: ….. What have we proved, then? That there is in reality such a phenomenon as a Jewish nose, even though it be differently constituted from our first assumption.
Page 396: Another characteristic of the Jewish physiognomy is the eyes. The eyebrows, seemingly thick because of their darkness, appear to be nearer together than usual, arching smoothly into the lines of the nose. The lids are rather full, the eyes large, dark, and brilliant.
Page 410:  In facial features Nicolucci’s early opinion seems to be confirmed, that the Greek face is distinctively orthognathous — that is to say, with a vertical profile, the lower parts of the face being neither projecting nor prominent. The face is generally of a smooth oval, rather narrow and high, especially as compared with the round-faced Slaves. The nose is thin and high, perhaps more often finely chiseled and straight in profile.
Page 416: The physical type of these inhabitants of Turkestan has been fairly well established by anthropologists. It persists throughout a great multitude of tribes of various names, among whom the Kara-Kirghiz, Uzbeks, and Kiptchaks are prominent. At page 44 we have represented these Turkoman types. The most noticeable feature of the portraits is the absence of purely Mongol facial characteristics. Except in the Kara-Kirghez the features are distinctly European. There is no squint-eye; the nose is well formed; the cheek bones are not prominent, although the faces are broad; and, most important of all, the beard is abundantly developed, both in the Uzbeg and the Kiptchak. The Kara-Kirghez, on the other hand, betrays unmistakably his Mongol derivation in every one of these important respects.
Page 418: In addition to this, the Turks are everywhere, as Chantre observes, “incontestably brunet.” The hair is generally stiff and straight. The beard is full. This latter trait is fatal to any assumption of a persistence of Kirghez blood, or of any Mongolic extraction, in fact. The nose is broad, but stright in profile. The eyes are perfectly normal, the oblique Mongol type no more frequent than elsewhere.
Page 433: From these portraits and from our other data it appears that the Magyars are a strikingly fine-looking and well-developed people. The facial features are regular, the nose and mouth well formed. There is nothing Asiatic or Mongol to be seen. Perhaps, indeed, they have, as Dr. Beddoe writes me, an Oriental type of beauty, with somewhat prominent “semi-Tatar” cheek bones. Nevertheless, we find no trace of the “coarse Mongoloid features” which Kean describes among these Szeklers, whom he rightly seems to regard as the purest representatives of the race. Nor are they even very dark, these Hungarians.
Page 445: These Kurds have remained relatively untouched by the Mongol or Turkish invasions in the retirement afforded by the mountains of Kurdistan. Both in their language and their physical traits they are Iranian. Chantre, studying them in Asia Minor, reports as to their hard features and savage aspect. Their own derivation of “Kurd” is from a word meaning “excellent”; but the Turkish equivalent for it, “wolf,” seems more aptly to describe their character. They are very dark, with eyes of a deep-brown tint; the women darker, as a rule. Our portrait at page 49 is fairly typical. The nose is straight or convex; rarely concave. The head is long and exceedingly narrow with a face corresponding in its dimension.
Page 450: Finally, our third subtype of the Persian occurs toward the southeast, among the so-called Suzians, about the mouth of the Persian Gulf. Look at our portrait of one of these on the preceding page. Is not the strain of negroid blood at once apparent? Notice the flattened and open nose, the thick lips and the black hair and eyes. We have reached the confines of India. Here we meet the first traces of the aboriginal population underlying the Hindoos. It includes all the native Indian hill tribes, and extends away off over seas into Melanesia. We are entering upon a new zoological realm. Our tedious descriptive task for European peoples is nearly completed.
Page 566: An interesting reason has been suggested for the predisposition of the negro for consumption — namely, that the broad, open nostril of the race is unfitted to perform the necessary service of warming the air before its entrance into the lungs. Leptorrhinism, it is asserted, may be due to natural selection, which has died upon that form of nose as most suitable to the temperate zone; and the negro, deprived of this advantage, suffers from disease of the lungs at once he is transferred to that part of the earth. It is not inconceivable that this may indeed serve as a partial explanation, but how, then, can we account for the equally open nostril of the Mongolian stock so immune from consumption? Or how can this theory be made to square with the predisposition of the Polynesian for the same class of diseases, especially when the leptorrhinism of this latter race is taken into account?

18 Instagram Stats Every Marketer Should Know for 2018
Instagram is a complete powerhouse amongst rival social networks. And if you think anything is different in 2018, you may want to reconsider.
The newest Instagram stats show there are currently more than 800 million monthly active users and many experts believe it could reach a billion in 2018. That’s more than double the monthly active users of Twitter and over three times as many users on WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.
But what makes Instagram so successful and prosperous for marketers?
Things like visual aesthetics and ease of use make Instagram marketing strategies essential for businesses. It’s important to know what makes Instagram tick so you effectively target, engage and sell to your customers.
Sprout features mentioned in this article:
Instagram analytics
Instagram management
To help your business learn everything there is to know about the platform, here are 18 Instagram stats every marketer should know in 2018:
1. 7 out of 10 Hashtags on Instagram Are Branded
Can you imagine the state of social media marketing in 2018 without hashtags? Not only do hashtags help social media users organize and categorize content, but they’re also one of the driving forces behind some of today’s best marketing campaigns.
Hashtags are everywhere, from casual conversations on and offline, to TV commercials and billboards. Hashtags for Instagram aid in content discovery and optimization.
As brands increase their dependence on user-generated campaigns, hashtags continue to be important for the acquisition and promotion of Instagram content. Instagram posts with at least one hashtag have 12.6% more engagement than those without.
And although each Instagram post allows up to 30 hashtags, research on the topic suggests that the optimum number of hashtags is 11.
One of the best ways to kick off a UGC campaign on Instagram is with the help of a branded hashtag. A branded hashtag is unique to your business or marketing campaign. It can be as simple as the name of your company, product or a related tagline.
A branded hashtag also doesn’t necessarily have to just be your company’s name. Feel free to get creative, as BarkBox did with their #BarkBoxDay branded hashtag, driving awareness for their products.

If you decide to make use of branded hashtags, you’re in good company. According to a Simply Measured study, 7 out of 10 hashtags on Instagram are branded. A tool like Sprout Social can help you to see which branded hashtags receive the most engagement and which ones are used the most with your username.
2. An Estimated 71% of US Businesses Use Instagram
Perhaps one of the most interesting Instagram statistics has to do with how fast the network is growing. With regards to business growth, the aforementioned Instagram stat is almost double the number of businesses (48.8%) that used Instagram in 2016!
The increase in the number of businesses that use Instagram has a lot to do with the release of Instagram Business profiles and new ad platforms. Many businesses have jumped at the chance to transition their profile to take advantage of features like:
Prominent contact information
Powerful analytics data
The ability to create new Instagram ads
There are currently 8 million Instagram Business profiles, up from 1.6 million in September 2016. Small businesses currently make up the majority of Instagram advertisers and business profiles.
If you’re not well-versed in Instagram’s new Business profiles, these Instagram stats can help bring you up to speed.

3. 80% of Users Follow a Business on Instagram
An Instagram Business profile allows you to add additional contact information that isn’t available for personal profiles. This information includes a business phone number and address. To go from a personal profile to a Business profile, you’ll need to have a Facebook page for your business.
According to Instagram, 80% of users say they follow at least one business on the app, with 60% hearing about a product and service through the platform. As of March 2017, over 120 million Instagram users visited a website, got directions, called a business, emailed or direct messaged a business.
Each of these activities signifies some level of interest, and in many ways, these Instagram fans can be considered as leads.
To get more tangible, at least 30% of Instagram users have purchased a product they first discovered on Instagram.
Instagram analytics (via Business profiles) can provide you with data about impressions and reach per post, as well as follower demographics, which shows how your posts performed and what your audience is like.
If you use Instagram ads, you’ll also have access to data about how your ad performed. These Instagram stats are important to know so that you can create posts that your followers will like and respond to.
Sometimes this data isn’t enough on its own. Some Instagram stats specific to your company can only be found with the help of Sprout Social’s Instagram Analytics Tool.
This graphic provides insight as to how each analytics tool can inform your Instagram efforts:
4. Instagram Mobile Ad Revenue to Hit Nearly $7 Billion in 2018
Instagram ad revenue is now expected to reach almost $7 billion in 2018, according to data from Statista. That’s nearly a $5 billion jump from just two years ago.
Last year the app released several features such as Instagram Stories attached to feeds and new advertising methods like Instagram Shopping. These type of updates have only boosted the value of advertising on Instagram. So marketers should expect to see this number stay true in 2018.
5. 25% of Instagram Ads Are Single Videos
While photo ads are the most common on Instagram, video has gained a lot of traction. In fact, 25% of Instagram ads are single videos.
Video ads can be up to 60 seconds long, but according to data from Wistia, drop off in engagement occurs quickly as length increases. If you can hook the audience within the first 30 seconds, they are likely to stick around and engage.
If your video is narrated or has any speaking in it, don’t forget to add captions. According to Digiday, 85% of Facebook video is watched without sound. Though Facebook is a different platform, it’s fair to draw parallels in this case in terms of the nature of video content consumption.
Brands like Lululemon, Ford, MTV and Disney use video ads to achieve various business goals. One week after launching, Lululemon’s videos received two time more engagement than its photos did.
Thanks to the information overload on the internet, you’ll want to make sure your Instagram video ads stand out.
6. Instagram Ads Increased by 28% in the Second Half of 2017
If you’re looking for a reason to get involved with Instagram advertising, now is definitely the time. According to data from Klear, there were 171,000 Instagram ads in December 2017 compared to 134,000 in July the same year. That’s a massive 28% growth in just six months.
To go even further, the total amount of ads from December 2016 to 2017 increased by 85,000 (almost double). Instagram is continuing to prove itself as an extremely valuable advertising avenue for marketers. The high amount of ads means it’s better to get in early in 2018 rather than wait.
7. Posts With a Location Get 79% More Engagement
Instagram has continued to expand on its geo-tagging feature for a while now. So it should come as no surprise that posts with location have 79% more engagement than those without.
On a final note, and before giving up, realize that it’s definitely possible to speed up Instagram growth (and engagement) without buying followers or likes.
8. 70% of Instagram Posts Don’t Get Seen
Among social networks, Instagram boasts the highest engagement rates. However, Instagram also deals with content overload and saturation.
Over 95 million photos are shared on Instagram daily, which means it can be hard for current and potential customers to find your posts. But due to the new algorithm, 70% of Instagram posts aren’t seen. Instagram’s new algorithm focuses more on past page engagement when choosing what content people will see.
To fix this disheartening Instagram stat, up your Instagram engagement game. Be different than other businesses on Instagram and use Instagram Stories ads or Live videos to tell unique brand experiences.
Additionally, tag places in your posts so that people searching those places can discover your content, which leads us to our next Instagram stat.
9. Instagram Users Engage More on Weekdays
The internet is full of studies claiming to know the best posting times for social networks. Often the data can be somewhat conflicting. So we decided to roundup all the stats and studies we could find and organize it to get a general consensus on the best times to post on Instagram.
Our data found that Monday through Friday were by far the best days to post to maximize engagement. Here are some of our other findings:
Mondays show the strongest correlation to engagement overall
3 p.m. is the least optimal time to post on any day
The most recommended times to post include 2 a.m., 8.a.m. and 5 p.m.
Taking a guess, the low activity around 3 p.m. might be due to people focusing on last-minute meetings and projects at work before heading out for their commute—which conversely explains why the 5 p.m. time slot is so good for engagement.
10. 80% of Influencers Prefer Instagram for Brand Collaboration
So how powerful is Instagram to influencer marketing? Let’s just say you’d be out of touch if you didn’t use the network to work with brands.
In fact, Zine discovered almost 80% of influencers prefer Instagram for brand collaborations over any other channel. What’s even more compelling about this report is the next highest channel is through blogging at only 16%!
For brands wanting to collaborate with influencers, the very first step should be Instagram. Even if you’re looking to promote across other channels, find your influencers through Instagram first.
11. Instagram Photos Generate 36% More Engagement Than Videos
What’s interesting about Instagram Video is while consumption has increased 40%, photos generate 36% more likes than videos. This could be due to any number of reasons. For instance, users could just watch your video then keep scrolling. Or in some cases, your videos might not drive people to take action.
Check out these examples of brands doing a great job with Instagram video to get some ideas on how you can improve.
12. 65% of Top-Performing Instagram Posts Feature Products
Though you shouldn’t be self-promotional all the time, Instagram users actually enjoy seeing photos of your products. Research from L2 found 65% of top-performing brand posts on Instagram feature products. In fact, product posts even beat out lifestyle content (43%) and images or videos from an influencer or celebrity (29%).
But before you change your content strategy to feature your products in every post, don’t forget the 80/20 rule.
The 80/20 rule states approximately 80% of your content should be focused on educating, enlightening and engaging your audience, and only 20% should be self-promotional. Gary Vaynerchunk applies this principle to social media marketing strategy in his book, Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook.

13. Photos With Faces Get 38% More Likes
Not all of your images should feature standalone products. Some of your images should include faces. Instagram photos that feature faces get 38% more likes than those without.
Adding faces to your photos doesn’t always have to mean taking portraits or selfies. Quirky photos of your team together at an event or around the office can also be effective.
WeWork does an excellent job of including the faces of their team and community in photos.

You can also mix in some lifestyle photos of people using your products. This is an excellent segue into our next stat.
14. User-Generated Content Has a 4.5% Higher Conversion Rate
You might also want to consider mixing products into your user-generated content campaigns. When a consumer sees a photo from a person rather than a brand, they have a 4.5% higher chance of conversion. This number increases to 9.6% if they interact with the photo.
No brand exemplifies the power of user-generated content on Instagram as much as AirBnB. Nearly their entire page consists of photos shared by customers.

15. The Most Used Instagram Filter Is Clarendon
There are 40 unique filters to choose from on Instagram (with Snapchat-esque face filters just announced), yet only one has unilaterally captured the hearts of users in 119 countries: Clarendon.
Surprised? So were we. According to Canva, Clarendon tops the list, probably because of its use as an all-purpose filter. It brightens, highlights and intensifies shadows. Another reason? Laziness. It’s usually the default filter after the Normal option.
A more recent study by Hopper found similar results to support the universal love of Clarendon, but also introduced a second-most popular option as far as Instagram filter usage: Gingham.
Canva also found correlations between popular filters and post type. For example, selfies get the most likes when used with no filter at all. Check out Instagram filter use category and their ranks:
#Nature filters: Valencia
#Fashion filters: Kelvin
#Food filters: Skyline
#Selfie filters: Normal
16. 50% of Instagram Captions & Comments Contain Emojis
There’s no doubt that Instagram is a visual platform through and through. In fact, even its captions and comments—the sections intended for text—display images via emojis. Thanks to support from iOS and Android keyboards, now nearly 50% of captions and comments on Instagram contain at least one emoji.
Emojis go beyond the simple smiley or icon to display an emotion. Now there are roughly 2,666 different emoji options to choose from in 2018. These small digital images or icons are used to express an idea or emotion. With quicker adoption rates, emojis are the fastest growing language in the UK, evolving faster than ancient forms of communication, such as hieroglyphics.
Due to Disney’s reputation as a fun and whimsical brand adored by kids, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the animation pros frequently include emojis in their captions.
It’s a most joyful day! Happy anniversary to #SleepingBeauty. 🦉💃🏼✨

In 2015, in an effort to capitalize on the popularity of emojis, Instagram released support for them in hashtags. This means emojis (and combinations there of) are now searchable on the platform. Following the rollout, Curalate found individual emojis were hashtagged more than 6.4 million times over a one-month period.
Check out our Instagram caption ideas post to get creative with your captions.
Global Adoption
Instagram’s research revealed emoji adoption spans the globe. Users in Finland are the most active with 63% of all text posted from the country containing at least one emoji. Here’s how other countries rank:
France: 50%
UK: 48%
Germany: 47%
Italy: 45%
Russia: 45%
Spain: 40%
Japan: 39%
US: 38%
Keep in mind that this research was conducted in 2015, so there’s a very good chance these numbers have shifted since that time.
Popular Emojis
So how do emojis rank on Instagram? Curalate analyzed the top 100 emojis on Instagram, and here are the top 10:
The most frequently used emoji is the single red heart, which has been shared more than half a million times (at the time of the study). There’s also a lot of positivity in the list. Four out of the top five emojis are positive smiley faces. And if you look at the top 20, half are smileys.
It’s not just smileys enjoying the top spots–hearts, kisses and positive hand gestures all rank highly as well. This leads us to believe that people often use Instagram to express positive sentiment.
Although the US ranked last for emoji usage in text at 38%—and despite the fact that 80% of Instagram users are outside of the US—the American flag is the only flag to break the top 100 (sitting at number 59).
Engagement doesn’t always come with context, but emojis help you gleam a little more insight into what fans share.
17. 59% of 18-29 Year Olds Use Instagram
Understanding Instagram’s demographics is important for audience targeting and crafting your messaging. While older users have certainly started to gravitate to the app, 18-29 year olds are the primary users.
For brands, this means it’s the perfect social platform to reach a younger demographic of millennials and even the up and coming Gen-Z. If that’s your target audience, Instagram should be a priority for your social media and content strategy going forward.
18. 80% of Instagram Users Live Outside of the US
For international brands or brands just outside of the US, you’ll be happy to know that Instagram has active users around the world. In fact, the company reported that 80% of its users live outside of the US.
This stat is also important for brands who don’t serve customers in other countries. Just because they may not buy from you doesn’t mean they can’t support or promote your page. Also, keep in mind that some of your customers in the US may be from other parts of the world, so you don’t want to alienate anyone.
Try to integrate multicultural visuals and content into your Instagram strategy to appeal to a wider audience.
Put These Instagram Stats to Use
Knowing and understanding each of these Instagram stats is useful, but it’s what you actually do with the information that makes a difference. So instead of just gathering these up to refer back to at random, take the time to determine how each Instagram stat might help to improve your business.
Any changes you make to your strategy won’t mean a thing unless you’re prepared to track the differences. With a social media management tool like Sprout Social, you can monitor hashtags, manage comments and track engagement for multiple accounts. Additionally, you can easily run and share reports on engagement, hashtags, followers, content and profile analytics.
Not only is Instagram a powerful platform for marketers and your brand, but now you have the proof to back up the claim.

A brief guide to time trials and road races
You might be thinking about racing on the road for the first time, but don’t really know how it all works. Here’s a little guide to try to explain it all.
First of all, the big divide is between road racing and time trialling. Road racing is where you all start at the same time and the winner is the first rider across the finish line, whereas time trialling is where you ride individually against the clock (usually the riders are set off at one-minute intervals to keep them apart). For historical reasons there are actually two different governing bodies controlling these events: road races are under the control of British Cycling (which used to be known as the BCF – British Cycling Federation) while time trials are controlled by CTT (Cycling Time Trials, previously known as the RTTC). Doing a road race in a bunch takes a certain amount of bike-handling skill and courage, plus, of course, you have to be strong enough to keep up with everyone else. For this reason, most people trying out racing for the first time start off by doing time trials – you are far less likely to crash and you go at whatever speed you can personally manage. So, we’ll look at time trials before road races.
The majority of time trials are held over a particular fixed distance. The most common distances are 10 miles and 25 miles, though there are also races at 30 miles, 50 miles, 100 miles and (for the masochistic) 12-hour events (where you ride as far as you can in 12 hours). Usually these courses go out and back on the same road: for a typical 10-mile race you would ride in one direction for approximately five miles, do a 180-degree turn at a roundabout, then ride back in the opposite direction to the finish line which is fairly close to the start line. Broadly speaking there are two types of courses. A ‘dragstrip’ is a course where you can expect to set a fast time – these are usually busy dual carriageways and are fairly flat. A ‘sporting’ course is slower and would usually be on quieter, smaller roads and be a bit more undulating. Time trials are not held on closed roads, so you will constantly have vehicles overtaking you and you may well have to slow down or even stop at roundabouts. There are marshals on the courses, but their job is not to stop the traffic – they simply point you in the right direction.
The CTT splits the country up into about 20 districts. We are in the ‘London East’ district (which extends into Essex and beyond), which means our courses begin with the letter ‘E’. All time trial courses have a code name (a tradition dating back many decades to when cycle racing had to be carried out secretly) which begins with the letter of the district. The courses that we use for our own events are the E1 and the E2 (in fact the names are a bit longer than that as they also include the distance), both up in northern Essex / southern Cambridgeshire. On the CTT website you can find maps of the various courses. Here is the E1/25b: https://cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/course-details/e1-25b . This is a sporting course on B-roads which we use for several of our events. We have our own Race HQ building nearby: https://leavalleycc.microco.sm/conversations/253853/.
Meanwhile, the E2 course is a dragstrip on the A11 dual carriageway near Newmarket: https://cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/course-details/e2-10
To take part in a CTT event you have to be a member of CTT-affiliated club (which Lea Valley CC is). Perhaps a little confusingly, to pay your £25 annual subscription and sign up to the club you actually have to go to the BC website (even if you have no intention of taking part in any BC events). Follow this link and then click on the ‘join our club’ button: https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/club/profile/1376/lea_valley_cc
Time Trials are usually either ‘Open’ events or ‘Club’ events. A club event is intended to be only for members of one club and can be quite a small affair with just a dozen riders or so. An open event is open to members of any CTT-affiliated club and can have a field as large as 120 riders. Riders are seeded according to their ability (when you complete the entry form you give your previous fastest times, if you have any, so that the organiser knows how good you are). The fastest riders are given the numbers finishing with ‘0’, the next fastest riders are given the numbers finishing with ‘5’, and so on. The idea is to minimise the chance of riders of a similar ability ending up riding together – you are not allowed to ride with anyone else. You are set off at one-minute intervals. If a rider catches you and overtakes you, you must not try to sit on their wheel – you have to let them draw clear of you and not take shelter.
The serious time trialists (or ‘testers’ as they are known) scour the country looking for the flattest, fastest dragstrip courses and live in hope of a ‘float day’ when the weather is absolutely perfect and they can set a personal best. Because of this, races on the fastest courses are usually oversubscribed and organisers only let the fastest 120 riders onto the start list. If you are looking to race for the first time, it would be best to enter a race on a slower course like the E2 or the E91 (in The Rodings area of Essex) as these don’t usually fill up – or, of course, enter a club event.
You can find lists of events on the CTT website and nowadays you can enter them online. Follow this link (and then filter the district to ‘London East’): https://cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/find-events
There are some time trials that are a bit different to these. Several are described as ‘hilly’ and follow a course which involves plenty of climbing and a series of left turns instead of just out and back. These are usually over non-standard distances (e.g. the ‘Hainault Hilly’ is about 29 miles long). Also, at the end of the season in October and the start of November there are a series of hill climbs. These are very short and involve just a few minutes of agony racing up the steepest hills in the area.
In terms of equipment, you can race a time trial on a normal road bike, but you will find that the fastest riders are using specialist time trial bikes with aero bars, aero helmets, disc wheels, etc. If your budget doesn’t stretch that far, you can spend less than £100 on some clip-on aero bars that will probably make you about 1mph faster – quite a good investment when every second counts.
Now we turn to road racing. The biggest road racing organisation is British Cycling*. To take part in their races, you need to become a BC member (gold or silver) and pay for a racing licence: https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/membership
When you first get a licence you will be a ‘4th cat’ rider. If you manage to finish in the top positions of a 4th cat race, you will gain some points (typically ten for first place, down to one for tenth). Once you have gained at least 12 points in one season you will be promoted to 3rd cat status. Similarly, if you get enough points at 3rd cat level you can move up to 2nd cat and so on. Races can be held for more than one category to compete in, so for example a 2/3/4 race is open to 2nd, 3rd and 4th cat riders. At the higher levels you need to earn a certain number of points per year to keep your status, otherwise you get relegated down to the category below, but 3rd cats can never be relegated to 4th cat status.
You are most likely to start out by doing ‘crits’ (or ‘criteriums’ to give them their full name) on purpose-built road circuits. Traditionally, the famous circuit in our area was Eastway, but this was bulldozed to make way for the Olympic Park. However, there are three circuits within easy reach which have opened up in recent years. The Velopark circuit is about one mile long and loops round by the Velodrome in the Olympic Park (near Stratford and Leyton) – this is fairly flat and not terribly technical. Hog Hill (aka Redbridge Cycling Centre) is a bit further afield near Hainault. If the full circuit is used it’s about 1.25 miles long and involves a vicious climb on every lap, but sometimes the races use a shorter version and avoid the hill. Hog Hill is more challenging than the Velopark, both in terms of climbing and in terms of technical cornering. On one hand, this makes it harder to race – it’s much harder to sit in the bunch than at the velopark and races are often quite attritional at Hog Hill, with the bunch getting thinned out every time it goes up the hill. On the other hand, it’s actually safer with fewer crashes – partly because the bunch gets thinned out and partly because the sprint finish is up a steep climb. Outside of London, but still easy to get to in less than an hour, the Cyclopark circuit is just off the A2 on the outskirts of Gravesend. This is 1.8 miles long: there are couple of tight bends and a long, draggy climb rather than anything steep. Although most people see the race season as running from March to September/October, you can actually find crits organised on these circuits all through the year.
A typical crit for 4th cats will be over a set time, rather than a set distance. So the race might be described as “40 minutes plus 5 laps”. This kind of racing requires a very different effort to a time trial. Instead of one constant level of exertion, you are constantly having to vary how hard you work: one minute you will be sprinting as hard as you possibly can just to stay in touch, the next minute everyone is free-wheeling and looking at each other. Initially it’s all about being able to stay with the bunch (it’s so much easier to ride in the pack than on your own, so if you get dropped it’s very difficult to fight your way back to the bunch). As you get better at that, it’s all about learning to maintain a good position or even being able join the right break and stay clear and, of course, being able to sprint at the end of the race.
Races on the open road are longer than crits. While a crit would usually be between 15 and 30 miles, a road would be between 40 and 100 miles or more (depending on the level of riders taking part). These races are based on circuits (usually raced anti-clockwise so that every turn is a left turn) between 5 miles and 15 miles in length. The roads are not closed, but you ride in a convoy, so up ahead of the bunch there will be at least two cars to warn oncoming traffic of what is coming up behind them, while behind the bunch there will be a commissaire’s car, a first aid car and (if you’re lucky) a car with spare wheels and so on. You must stay on the left hand side of the road when there are white lines down the middle.
You can search for events using the ‘calendar’ on the BC website: https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/events?zuv_bc_discipline_filter_id=21 As mentioned earlier, you’re more likely to have a crash in a crit or road race than in a time trial as you will be riding in very close proximity to dozens of other riders (perhaps even 80 riders in one group). Because of this you need to have experience of group riding before taking part in a race. It’s also well worth watching the series ‘Ride Smart’ and ‘Race Smart’ videos to learn about racing safely in a bunch. Here is one of them: britishcycling.org.uk/knowledge/article/izn20141117-Road-How-to-corner-in-a-bunch---Racesmart-0 Good luck!
*There are also races organised by other organisations, such as TLI and LVRC.
