Vampire’s Caress
Realised a little too late that the final piece this will eventually lead to would’ve been a nice one to drop on Halloween... I guess these sketches will have to do for now!
Some more ideas for my lore-only Destiny characters series... this time, the ladies behind the lore of the Karnstein Armlets. The flavour text on these exotic Warlock gauntlets (“You are mine, you shall be mine, you and I are one for ever”) is a direct quote from the notorious 1872 vampire story by Sheridan Le Fanu, Carmilla, which beat Bram Stoker’s Dracula to the punch by 25 years.
The title character’s full name is Countess Mircalla Karnstein. The references in the flavour text, lore tab and even exotic perk on the gauntlets seemed too direct a reference to the story to resist designing the central characters as Warlock and Hunter. The former is wearing the other piece of exotic vampire fashion for Warlocks- the Sanguine Alchemy robes. The latter is Laura, Carmilla’s would-be prey / wife, and though I haven’t decided on an armour set for her, I’ve made her a Hunter on account of the adventurous nature one would need to accept such a dangerous lover, even partly... I haven’t actually read the story (finally remembered to torrent it this morning & will be starting on it tonight!), but a beloved mutual who has assures me Laura has "searching, wandering, seeking, craving, tragedy" vibes, which fits!
The lore tab has been edited. It used to start as follows: “Listen! I am a Hunter, like you, and I made this armlet to help you in your hunts. Will you help me in mine?“. Not sure what the devs might’ve meant by this, whether it was a mistake or a nod to the idea that Warlock-aligned Risen may well have a Hunter’s spirit, & class divisions aren’t necessarily observed by all in-game characters...
