HOUKI: RIVALRY & THE EFFECTS OF SEEKING IT.

Houki, as mentioned in this previous headcanon, desires to emulate Kakashi in every way possible to him. Part of this is that he desires to have a rivalry much like the renowned one between Kakashi and Gai. Not only because it will allow him to continue to shape himself in the image of the Rokudaime, but also because he cannot ignore the training advantages such a bond will bring to him, allowing him to progress his physical skills as much as those of his mind and his jutsu (both of which he picks up quite easily). While his ideal rival is Metal Lee, he has yet to be successful in securing this due to Metal’s anxiety when observed.

Instead Houki seeks rivalry in other places, however he is not particularly good at power matching. In his efforts to be as strong as his idol, he inadvertently picks up one of Kakashi’s less favourable habits, namely the frequent hospital stays the other goes through. Due to the fights he picks, it is not uncommon to find Houki taking up medical nin’s time to heal various cuts or bruises or in for an overnight stay due to a head injury or complications. It is rare for him to be in for chakra exhaustion / depletion however as most of the fights he seeks out are purely taijutsu-based, or when using ninjutsu he avoids using great expenditures of chakra preferring to focus on the basic staples (substitution, clones, transformation) and the basic fuinjutsu he has learnt.

Despite the time in and out the hospital, Houki is not deterred. In fact he is unlikely to ever turn down a sparring challenge set to him and requires his team mates - Hako and Renga - or other people he has formed a bond with to reason with him that it might not be the most beneficial course of action for his health. Team meetings, training and missions all will take priority over sparring challenges, as will any summons by the Hyuga clan due to his own clan’s ties to them.

HOUKI: IDOL WORSHIP 

“I’ve been a big fan of Lord Sixth from the first time I saw him! The genius ninja, Lord Sixth, Kakashi Hatake!...  Any way you look at it, he’s the perfect ninja!”

Houki knew from a young age he was more competent than his peers in some aspects. Knowledge that took children his own age weeks and months to attain stayed in his mind instantly. He later discovered - in the early days of entering the Academy - that he has a photographic memory and that is why he excels in the physical acquisition of knowledge. 

Around the same time as he was noticing this acceleration in learning, he was looking for someone to model himself on. His own home held only his grandmother, as they had moved from the Taketori clan home outside of the village and while he recognised some of her traits as desirable it was not in the same way. He also looked to the Hyuga household, given the close connection with his own clan, but he did not find a resemblance.

As most young children in the village, he turned to their village leader as an idol. The first sighting he had of Kakashi - a small town event in which he stood atop the Hokage building and addressed the assembled shinobi families - filled him with a sense of awe. It was then he began to consume knowledge, and with that vast memory of his he soon could recite how many missions Kakashi had been on officially, the age he reached each rank, the teams he had been a part of, the summons he had, the jutsu he had learned. He would spew facts endlessly to his friends until they got sick of hearing about him at the playgrounds and parks they hung out in. He found similarities in their aptitude to do things earlier than others around them and began to associate Kakashi with someone he could model himself to be. 

Naturally when playing he would imitate shinobi of the 4th great war with friends, but over time he began to singularly take the role of Kakashi. One time he decided to wear a bandana as a mask and it was pointed out to him how alike they looked in that moment. After that he became determined to get a mask himself, going to far as to ask his grandmother to purchase one. It soon became a fixed point that he would not take it off. He liked the mystery it gave to him, the way others couldn’t quite tell what he was thinking and feeling. 

And every time he was told he looked a little bit like the sixth hokage or reminded someone of him it made his heart soar a little more. Once or twice he even had those who personally knew Kakashi comment on it and it cemented the look for him. When others rejected the thought it caused him pain, and he would often dwell on why he did not look like his idol. 

By the time he entered the Academy, his idol worship was fully developed and unshakeable. Though he’d never had a personal interaction of note with Kakashi, he had caught several sightings of him interacting with different people over the years outside of public appearance (even going so far as to actively attempt to spot him on a few occasions much to his grandmother’s chagrin) and began to adopt some mannerisms. In his mind, he had decided this was what strength looked like, and was determined to emulate in every way. By the time he was at the Academy the teasing had faded, his peers well aware that he would not be swayed from his determination. He became less ready to spew information (another mannerism adapted from his idol) and more focused on his studies, though if prodded to talk he would.

He wouldn’t admit to it, but a lot of his self worth is tied up in how like Kakashi he is. For instance, when his taijutsu skills were not able to rival those of Metal upon their initial sparring matches, he was disappointed, knowing of the great rivalry between Kakashi and Gai. It immediately caused him to become more determined to practise taijutsu.

tl;dr: Houki looked around for a role model, saw Kakashi, went yes you and then proceeded to adapt his entire identity to be him to the point that now if he isn’t like Kakashi he considers himself to be failing.

Houki for the character meme? I know you said you haven't really watched Boruto but he hasn't appeared very often anyway don't worry

favorite thing about them: the fact that he takes advice and learns quickly when he realizes that his approach isn't working and isn't the best for himself and his team. He had one talk with Sukea and immidiatly fixed himself so that he could work better with his team because he realized his method was not working.

least favorite thing about them: nothing. He is my baby and he is precious!!!

favorite line: "once i see something, i mever forget it" it shows how focused he is on being a good shinobi and remmembering everything even if it may seem unimportant.

OTP: he's so young...but if they gift us with more scenes and growth with him i could totally go for adult hoki/metal because why tf not XD

nOTP: hoki/any adult. I hope there is nothing out there in the world like that....but i don't trust the world anymore

random headcanon: Hoki became best friends with Metal on their first day at the acadamy because he saw someone who was super open but also very anxious and shy and wanted to make sure they were never alone because no one should ever be alone.

unpopular opinion: i don't know??? Maybe that Kakashi should take hin under his wing as a semi retired teacher who just wants to teach hoki how to navigate the world and treasure those important to him.

HOUKI AU 

This AU aligns very much with @divaur​‘s Obito canon in which it is Obito instead of Kakashi who is the Sixth Hokage. As mentioned in this previous headcanon, Houki’s idol worship fixes upon emulating the leader of the village in lieu of having someone closer to him to emulate, and so in this instance he chooses Obito Uchiha as his idol. 

In terms of character, his choices change a little bit. Instead of being a quiet peer in the background, he’s a lot more upfront and boisterous (very reminiscent of Obito’s genin days) and his enthusiasm is less contained. He is more vocal in the classroom and quicker to turn to a fight. His dress changes; gone is the mask. Pre-genin Houki wears a high collar t-shirt that is very similar to the standard Uchiha high collar shirts. 

Once he graduates, Houki takes on a look more reminiscent of Obito’s own look. A mesh shirt, crop jacket (short-sleeved), the weird arm guards with metal plates for the backs of the hands, blue trousers and blue sandals (in Boruto era, he really is wearing a throwback here). His favourite piece of the outfit, however, is the goggles. Given to him by Obito and Rin ( @hopeburnt​ ) after they have been mended, he actually wears THE goggles that his hero wore. For context; Houki lives with his grandmother until his final year at the Academy when she passes away and he is adopted by Rin (and by extension, Obito).   Later he asks Rin if he can also wear the Nohara markings on his face. 

As a genin he’s also a lot more fiery and all too frequently gets into arguments with others who tell him that Obito is uncool, or a loser or not the best. He is an encyclopaedia of Uchiha knowledge having searched for whatever scrap he could find, and he regularly asks people who know Obito about Obito. Kakashi is regularly bothered until he substitutes the hell out of there (Houki has thrown rocks at him before).
