One of my favorite things is trying out foods from other cultures. I grew up very white and rather poor, so the meal rotation was like, three basic dishes and rather bland because my parents literally only had salt, pepper, and onion powder in the cabinet. The most adventurous seasonings we had were Lawry's seasoning salt and Worchestershire sauce. The most multicultural we got was eating Polish sausages and pizzelles. Or the wursts at the German festival when I was older. (We come from Irish and Irish/Austrian immigrant families, and a city that in the 80s was predominantly Irish, Polish, and Italian immigrants.)
My mom's high school friends (rich preppies all) introduced me to sushi. My college friends introduced me to the glorious budgetary cuisine of Chinese buffets. I ventured cautiously into the little Korean market to try pocky and ice cream taiyaki. I married a Black man and learned how to cook more dishes with Actual Spices that at present have taken over the kitchen. Together we've tried as many Japanese dishes as we can get ahold of and cook several ourselves thanks to the Japanese grocer. Our Columbian neighbors introduced me to tamales - which scared me a little at first because I had to wait to see how they addressed the corn husk wrappers. Were they edible? Should I just bite it? Glad I waited, you unwrap it first! So delicious. They also turned us on to a little chili-lime-salt seasoning to shake onto watermelon and I swear you will never eat it plain again after that. It is also good on pineapple.
This post brought to you by the delightful arepa I snagged from the grocery store, which is my lunch. It is basically an elevated grilled cheese made with sweet and crispy corn cakes that takes just minutes in the skillet then om nom nom.
It is an utter shame I missed out on these foods for the first half of my life.
I am definitely thankful that I live in an area now that has cuisine from damn near everywhere. Like Thai food. (Hot damn that tea though.) Indian food is next on our list but I have White Person Taste Buds so we'll be cautious there lol.

Winston and Lena for Geeky =P
@madegeeky YOU ARE VERY LOVED. Also this is abbout 2500 words and thus not even really a ficlet anymore but instead
A Stopped Clock 7.5: Lighting-Up Time in London
I hope you enjoy it! All of  A Stopped Clock can be found here.
It was raining in London, which you’d think Winston wouldn’t even pay attention to anymore, used to it as he was, but he still noted it. He’d had Tracer back in London two weeks, and already he’d seen improvements to her condition, and so it could rain as much as it wanted. She loved it anyway, she was a creature of the fog and mist. She was always complaining about how dry Numbani was anyhow.
The question, of course, still hung over him as to how much better she would get. Mercy had no idea, either, simply shaking her head and saying by every model she could figure, Tracer should not have survived the shock of it in the first place. Being ripped in and out of time was hard on a body, not to mention the aspects of sensory overload that the absence of time itself had on her. He tried not to think on it, too much, as the answer for him would never change as to what he would do. He would take care of Tracer, for as long as she needed, or as long as she lived, whatever came first.
Besides, it was much easier in London. The Oxtons were constantly helping, bringing over food and offering to help with cleaning and dishes and whatever else Winston and Tracer might need. Making sure Tracer’s life was as pleasant as possible was more of a group project here, and he knew no one would try to take her and put her away, and for that reason alone, rain or not, Winston felt much more at ease.
Athena’s voice rang overhead. “Parvati is at the door.”
Tracer’s cousin was a frequent visitor, a seeming palette swap of Tracer herself born a month later. Winston opened the door for her, grocery bags in hand, her long black hair swept up into a low and lazy bun that didn’t fully contain it, dark eyes glittering with mischief as she winked at Winston, deep freckles dancing across her face as she smiled that Oxton grin.
“Brought you a few essentials.” She eased past him without being invited, knowing she had no need.
Essentials, by Parvati’s measure, was likely a container of beer and cider and few frozen pizzas. Sometimes she thought ahead enough to bring some meat, or vegetables, but it was always a scattered array. In the kitchen, Parvati made Tracer look like a domestic goddess, which she was always quick to counter was reversed when something needed cleaning.
Depositing her essentials in the exact spaces Winston had imagined, a light blue bag from work still slung over her shoulder, she clapped Winston on the arm.
“‘Ow’s this romantical sort of day going for you, big guy?”
Winston looked at her, puzzled. “What?”
“‘S Valentine’s Day,” she took something out of the bag, “on that note, Teddy ‘ad me bring you these.”
They were sweet rolls, in the shape of hearts with pink frosting. Anything from Teddy’s bakery was generally a treat, but he must have remembered how much he liked these.
“Ones with raisins in, your favorite, right?”
“I,” Winston stumbled, “Yes, I love them, I, I totally forgot it was Valentine’s Day.”
Parvati gave a crackle of a laugh. “Women ‘round all of London will be crying tonight,” she saw his slight slump of the shoulder, “I’s only joking Win, why should you know what day it is, been a bit busy, you have, and that’s the bloody truth.”
“Do you have plans?” He asked setting the rolls out for later. Maybe Tracer would feel well enough to have tea.
“Intend to,” she chuckled, “but so far, not much luck.”
“Weren’t you--” He shook his head. “Nothing.”
“No need to be bashful for it, Win, wasn’t I seeing a man, you were going to ask, love, and well, true enough, I was, but I find men are a bit like fast food adverts. You see it, and you go, ‘right enough, think I’d love that!” get it ‘ome, nothing but a bit of greasy cheese stuck to some weak little patty and the ‘ole thing covered in oil, think I’d learn, but I never really do, curse of me life, it is.”
Sometimes talking to Parvati made Winston miss Tracer, in ways he could not articulate. She had the same rapid fire stream of consciousness, the same easy laugh, the same patter. She didn’t have Tracer’s quality of movement, exactly--no one did--but it was obvious they had been raised together, and it made him feel a desperate longing for Tracer to come back to him, just as she’d been.
“Should be seeing Lena,” Parvati nodded, “if you’ll excuse me, told me to come by early.”
Winston nodded as Parvati headed to the side room that had always been Tracer’s, even when Winston had first bought this place, before she’d been so badly hurt again. It was nice that people came to see her, and her family seemed patient with the idea that she didn’t really talk too much, still, or that she needed a bit of quiet and calm. In all, he supposed, they were both very lucky. The Oxtons had taken him in like a stray, given them his last name and told him to say no more about it.
There were plenty of things he needed to do today. He had to try and get everything together to start advertising his repair business. It wasn’t glamourous, but he could fix nearly anything, technology wise, and so what if it was cell phones and laptops and not high-end equipment? He’d made his interest known to the British government, thinking they might have need of his particular skills, but of course, with Overwatch crumbling, they were keeping their distance.
So, cell phones and laptops it was, no job too big or too small for your friendly repairape. It would be enough to get them by, with her family’s help, and he could do it from home, so she could be cared for, and so Winston didn’t really care that it was somewhat of a stepdown from the cutting edge work he’d been doing. Maybe there would be enough time to tinker, and that would be nice. He’d always liked that.
Valentine’s Day. It was strange to think that a day devoted to love might mean anything to him at all, and he would have convinced himself he didn’t care, when he was younger, before he’d had any sort of a family to call his own. And now he was getting sweet rolls from someone who owed him nothing, and he had completely failed to reciprocate.
Teddy wouldn’t hold it against him. It wasn’t in his nature, and the two of them had always had a bit of a kinship, being giant, quiet marshmallows folded into a family of tiny spitfires.
Maybe he would see about getting dinner delivered for him and Tracer, something special. Whether she was seeing someone or wasn’t, Tracer had always made a special point of doing something with the two of them for Palentine’s Day, her own giggling inclusion to a romantic holiday that allowed space for the people she loved in all the other ways. Maybe Italian? Their favorite was always Chinese, and sometimes Indian, but Valentine’s Day was a special holiday and so he wanted to get something special. If she was feeling up to it, maybe they could watch a movie together.
Nothing too much--Mercy had recommend Tracer not drink on the medicine she’d prescribed, and he never wanted to make Tracer feel bad for forgetting, she’d been trying to get well, of course she wouldn’t pay the day any mind--but just something, so Tracer would know he still felt himself lucky to have a friend like her.
Yes, he resolved, that would be a nice quiet Valentine’s Day between them, and that would be just lovely.
His thoughts were disturbed by the sound of Parvati calling goodbye to Tracer, shutting the doors quietly behind her as she swung back around to where WInston sat. It had been nearly an hour, that he’d been sitting there just daydreaming, he realized, and had gotten so little of the work he’d meant to accomplished.
“Seems pretty well today,” Parvati nodded to him, “minute by minute, sun comes back up, don’t it?”
He envied the Oxtons their easy faith in resilience. It was not that they believed things would work out, so much as they believed they could recover from them. East end flattened in the Omnic crisis? Always did hate that pub, opportunity for something better to go in. Tracer ripped out of time? Well, she was always a strong little thing, she’ll come right. Someone you love has died? We’ll all live the harder for them, say their name over a beer. They were born with sunshine and steel in their spines, and he adored them.
“She’s getting better,” he nodded.
“Course she is,” Parvati shifted her bag onto her shoulder, “told her the plans for me birthday, and she’d be barmy to miss that, love, and you as well, Win, you never come out and you should.”
“Parvati, that’s not until September.”
“Right,” she giggled, “but I know you, Win, and it’ll take you the ‘ole seven months to talk yourself into it. Oh! And Lena’s wanting to see you as well, likely to tell you all about me birthday plans.”
She had a small point, but he refused to concede it, instead scowling playfully and waving her off. Parvati chuckled as she tied her shoes and headed out the door into the damp and grey of a cool London day, flicking open her umbrella with a flourish as the door closed behind her.
Winston closed the lid of his laptop. There was no way he was going to get anything done until he’d spoken to Tracer and made sure she didn’t need anything, anyhow. Maybe he could come back to it with fresh eyes and get a little more done. Tracer would be excited, he hoped, for their dinner plans. He would suggest she order whatever she liked, and as much of it as she wanted. She was eating a little better, in the past few days, but it was still a worry of his. There was only so many times he cared to have an argument about whether or not she needed a nutrition shake.
He lumbered quietly into her bedroom, decorated with pictures of her family and friends, little drawings by some of the smaller Oxtons, and postcards from some of the scattered Overwatch folks who cared enough to hope she got well. Tracer herself was leaned against a large pile of pillows, looking out the window at the drizzle and the pigeons huddling under the eave of the house for warmth. She still carried the pallor she would carry for months, and there was a quality of fragility about her that seemed so out of character no matter how long it persisted, but her sweater was brightly colored, and when she saw Winston come in she smiled brightly, and pushed herself to sit up.
“Win.” Her voice was a bit quiet, but warm and bright.
He settled in next to her bed. When he sat on the floor, they were nearly nose to nose, and Tracer seemed to appreciate it, at least until she could easily climb on his shoulder again.
“Parvati said you’re feeling good today.” He nodded as if that extra emphasis would make it true.
“I think so!” She looked back out the window again, “‘ope the pigeons are staying warm, but I must be honest, missed this in Numbani.”
She touched the window, and the cold ran through her for a moment. Her body jumped and she gave a small whimper, hanging her head and closing her eyes.
He reached out and put his hand on her leg, almost without thinking about it, his touch heavy and gentle. Tracer put her hand on Winston’s and they sat there for a moment, Tracer taking a few deep breaths before she opened her eyes.
“Don’t always think.” She managed a small smile.
“I was thinking,” he kept his voice soft, “tonight, for dinner, it’s Valentine’s Day--I,I forgot too, so don’t”
“Oh Win, but I didn’t forget!” She leaned forward excitedly, nearly jumping toward him, which itself was a bit too much, and she had to brace herself on the edge of the bed for a few quiet seconds.
Don’t be a worrywart, Winston, he reminded himself, she hates that. She’s testing things because she’s feeling so much better. That’s good. She’s fighting. She’s winning. Just takes time.
“I didn’t forget,” she continued, nodding slowly, “I got you something. It isn’t very much, really, but I made Parvati ‘elp.”
She turned to her little bedside table and took out a card. The red envelope had a few heart stickers on it, and in clumsy, difficult handwriting, it said “To Win. I love you. Lena.”
“Still shaking a bit,” she looked down at it, “not as pretty as it might be.”
He took it from her trembling hands, trying not to show how overwhelmed he was by the quality of her love, even after knowing her for these last few years. A few weeks ago, she had been barely able to speak, hardly able to be touched, and here she was, thinking about Winston on a silly side holiday.
Winston ran his hand over the envelope. It almost seemed too much to open. How hard must it have been for her to write? Every letter she would have struggled through was an I love you, and he wasn’t sure he could bear it.
“I didn’t do anything for you.”
She gave a chuff. “Think we can both agree that’s a bloody lie.”
He looked up at her. “I thought maybe I would get us some Italian. Have a little date for the two of us, watch a movie?”
“Oh Win, I’d love to!” she reached out slowly, resting her head on his shoulder. “I love you. Happy Palentine’s Day, love.”
Her eyes held that glimmer he’d always known, and he felt the sunrise Parvati had mentioned.
There were so many things Winston could not control. The rain in London. The market for mobile repair. Whether Tracer would ever fully recover. But he could do this. He would make a nice cozy spot on the couch for the two of them, two little Valentines safe and sound. He would get them rich, thick pastas, and play some sappy movie.
He may not be able to fix her, but he could love her, and be loved by her, and today, that was enough.

Kolkata Day 4: “All This Weird Beauty, Thrown Right at Me”
Tuesday, my fourth day in Kolkata, dawned far too early as I had fallen asleep at 4:00 the previous afternoon. After unsuccessfully trying to sleep, I finally made my way downstairs for the hotel’s breakfast around 8:30. Much to the enjoyment of the waiter, I ordered a “real Indian breakfast” of tortilla-like breads and potatoes in sauce. Taking my banana for the road, I headed to New Market for some retail therapy, which I felt was well-deserved after the long journey to Dakshineswar on Monday.
New Market is the oldest indoor shopping mall in the world, built around the S. S. Hogg meat market. Going as a Caucasian Westerner is intimidating, even in a group, but going alone was exhausting. As soon as I arrived after the quick walk from my hotel, I was accosted by porters telling me to follow them to the best shops, saying that they would give me the best prices, vying for my patronage. I shunned them, but one relentless older man followed me, and so I let him lead me to an “emporium.” This shop turned out to be the same shop from which I’d bought scarves, a ring, and a tapestry during my last trip to Kolkata, and which had benefited greatly from my DukeEngage group’s almost-weekly visits. Notorious amongst us for the insane prices they tried to charge and aggressive haggling required, I declined to buy anything here and asked my porter to show me to a place to buy shoes. The shop seemed familiar, and may have been the place from which I bought handmade flats last time. I was looking for a pair of leather, closed-toe sandals to add to my travel wardrobe, since the only shoes I’d packed were my trusty Chacos. I found a pair I liked, and after some back and forth, paid Rs. 1900 for them - about $30 USD. This was more than I’d intended to spend the entire day, but I liked the shoes and lacked the strength in numbers to feel empowered to haggle more.
From the shoe shop we went to a store selling pants, scarves, skirts, and other fabrics. I knew I wanted a pair of black pants and a black “om” scarf, similar to the white and red one I’d bought during my first visit. Somehow I ended up paying Rs. 1500 for the pants (WAY too much, and I don’t even like the pants that much - they’re way too ~white girl visits India ~ with multicolored elephants and bells on the drawstrings) and Rs. 1000 for the scarf. Feeling elated, but also a little defeated, I left the market accompanied by the porter and paid him my balance after visiting an ATM.
I wanted to take photos inside the market, so after he set me on a course back to Sudder Street I turned around and headed back inside. I spent probably 15 minutes taking photos of the meat market and the surrounding streets before a young man began following me. Usually I can deter the followers by a shake of my head, a stern “na,” or simply ignoring them, but this man was not to be dissuaded. He kept asking for a “shelfie” with me, which I declined, and continued to tail me as I wove through the meat stalls. I was feeling a bit unsettled, when I saw what I thought would be salvation - a mid-20s, Caucasian man buying beef. I hustled over to him and struck up a conversation, but the man was more of a boy, and totally oblivious to the hints I was dropping that I was being followed. My “daddy,” he told me, “works for Exide, the battery company, and we’ve lived here a year and a half. Enjoy your time here” And with that, I was left with my trailing Bengali man again. Luckily, my porter soon found me and I told him I was being tailed. He quickly ushered me out of the market, told me I shouldn’t be there by myself, and sent me on my way yet again.
Again feeling defeated, I made my way over to Cafe Coffee Day with the help of the map on my phone (and no help from my porter or any locals, who didn’t seem to know what it was). There, I had a latte, and spoke very bad Bangla with the waitress and the host. After spending some time collecting myself, I decided to head over to the Mother House. It appeared that the walk would take about an hour, and I pulled out my camera and went on my way
The walk was pleasant -- there had been a tremendous thunderstorm on Monday night, and the day was cooler (still in the 100s, but cooler) and cloudy. I took pictures of beautiful, crumbling colonial palaces, walked by shop after shop selling foods and drinks and sweets - and stopped for my favorite Bengali sweet, the dripping, luscious gulab jamun - and felt completely at home amidst the heat and the filth and the bustle. When I arrived at the Mother House, it turned out I had stopped at the wrong place, it was actually a branch of the Missionaries of Charity; the Mother House was further down the road. A young street girl, 19 years old when I asked her age, offered to walk me to the real Mother House. I knew as soon as we started walking that this was going to end in a scam, but I was exhausted from fending off beggars and yellers and askers and attention-grabbers and so I let it happen.
Her name, she said, was Kokomoni. She was married with a one year-old child, she said, and her husband, much older, had fallen out of love with her and was interested in another woman. She worked at a hotel as a cleaner. Recently, she hadn’t been able to produce enough milk for her child, and so “please, ma’am,” she asked, “please buy me some powdered milk. No money, just milk.” Sigh. Upon doing some research once I arrived at the Mother House, after buying her the milk (which cost Rs. 350!!), I did some research. Apparently this is a classic scam, and the milk is shortly exchanged for cash, of which the shop owner takes a cut.
Not only had I just been ripped off, but the Mother House was closed. Double sigh. And my phone had just run out of rupees. Triple sigh. I was exhausted - tired of being stared at whistled at and yelled at, tired of sticking out. I sat on the stoop of the House for a bit, collecting myself yet again, and then decided to go down to my old neighborhood.
From Park Street, I took the metro down to Kalighat. My first order of business was to purchase a chicken egg roll from our beloved Bavarchi, one block up from our old home. To my dismay, Bavarchi was closed! There were two new restaurants in its place, one Chinese and one offering rolls. I got a chicken roll, which was almost (but not quite) as good as the ones I was used to. Chicken rolls in West Bengal aren’t the Chinese type that comes to mind, but deep fried naan-esque bread rolled around kabaab-cooked chicken and veggies. I ate it as I walked through the neighborhood and made my way down to Rabindra Sadan Lake, where I spent an uneventful hour or two walking the lakeside path.
When I left the lake, I decided to head to the Gariahat street market to get mehendi (henna), since I remembered having it done outside the Spencer’s grocery store there six years back. As I waited beside I chai stall to cross the street, I saw teeny little kittens darting around the stall’s wheels. I squealed, and a older lady sitting on one of the benches grinned. As I knelt down to try to entice one of the kittens to come closer, the woman was more successful, and lured a kitten to her only to snatch it up by the scruff of the neck and hold it out to me. Thrilled, I cuddled the distraught kitten for a moment before setting it down, thanking the kind lady with “dhono badh” (that’s a very butchered, phonetic spelling), and crossing back up to Rash Behari road.
I walked through Kalighat and the fruit and veggie market, then through rows and rows of saris and salwar kameez and backpacks and umbrellas before finding an entire row of mehendi stalls. I plopped down on one and told them I could spend 100 Rupees only - last time we got mehendi we got gloriously swindled into paying like 1500 apiece - to which they agreed. Apparently, each side of a hand costs Rs. 50, so I got the palm of each hand painted and then sat with the stall owners, Olima and Ashok, for a bit while my hands dried. They laughed with me as I sputtered out different phrases in broken Bangla, and taught me the words for big cat and little cat as we watched a cute orange and white kitten weave in and out of the stalls. The neighboring stall sold hair clips and bindis, and the young boy running the stall watched in amusement as I worked on “choto biral” (small cat) and “bolo biral” (big cat).
I took the metro back up once my mehendi was dry-ish, used another roadside bathroom stall for Rs. 2, and arrived back at my hotel around 6:00. My plan was to sleep early since I had been awake so early, but I was super hungry. Begrudgingly, I ordered the overpriced room service, and called it a night pretty late.
The phrase that kept repeating itself during my self-guided walking tour of the city was (don’t judge me) Lady Gaga’s “Beautiful, Dirty, Rich.” Kolkata is the most beautiful city I’ve ever seen, and it’s difficult for me to describe why to people who haven’t been. The old world colonial buildings are streaked with dark lines from years of torrential downpours, and the newer buildings are painted in bright reds and blues and yellows. All of this clamors for space amidst the jungle, which fights against the city to overtake it, striking a tenuous balance of lush and green and industrial and manmade. The city  busy and loud, and no one can argue that it’s clean. Excrement from hordes of homeless people and from goats and cows and cats and dogs, garbage and food due to the lack of a strict municipal garbage system; the aromas of street food and sweets; and the sweat of millions of bodies all mix together to create an aroma that is, at best, disturbing, and at worst, gag-inducing. Piles of garbage line the streets and the air is full of haze from the gasoline of thousands of taxis and autorickshaws and motors and cookfires. And yet - every person, especially the women, greet me with a smile. People talk loudly and animatedly and argue and hold hands and sing. Indian music blares from car radios and the speakers of the shops. It’s intoxicating. It’s beautiful, dirty, and rich in every sense except for financially. There’s nowhere else like it. I’ve said hundreds of times that it’s exhausting, and it’s even moreso traveling there alone. Without the solidarity of travel companions, I stand out that much more. I am never alone and never not being stared at. I never blend in. As a friend in Bangalore helped me articulate, I know the city, but the city doesn’t know me. It’s almost unnerving at times, but still, the city has its hooks in me. I love it more than I’ll ever be able to convey, even when I hate it - and sometimes, I loathe the filth and the heat and the crowdedness. But I still love it, and it will always feel like another home.

As grocery stores, across the country, are grappling with panic buying and dwindling supplies of fresh stocks, the exodus of labourers have added more fuel to the fire by affecting the entire supply chain of essential commodities, ranging from wheat flour to pulses and biscuits to edible oils.
Majority of grain markets are shut, oil and rice mills are operating with minimum workforce, and truck operators are finding it difficult to move fast moving consumer products (FMCG) across the cities, mostly sealed during the nationwide 21-day lockdown. If the situation aggravates, the country might witness hoarding of goods and price rise of several items.
Despite the efforts of Central as well as state governments to ensure proper supply of FMCG and other essential goods, the fear of COVID-19 pandemic is keeping away the labourers and workers from working in the mills and factories.
"The coronavirus fear has affected the production. Nearly 80 per cent of dal mills are inoperative due to unavailability of labour and supply of raw material. Though the government has now allowed plying of trucks, still issues with transportation remains," says Suresh Agarwal, of All India Dal Mills Association adding, "even as authorities have allowed truckers to operate, the police of different states, particularly on the borders creates hindrance in transporting goods."
ALSO READ: Politics over pain: Migrants' long walk home and the Centre-state tussles
Obviously in weeks to come, supply of different varieties of pulses, an essential part of the diet, could be crippled. "But if labour gets back to work, and transport issues are quickly sorted out, the supplies could be smoothen, thus maintaining a balance between supply and demand," hopes Suresh Agarwal. Some varieties of Arhar was quick to disappear from shelves of local grocery stores in Delhi.
"There was a panic buying on the eve of the lockdown on 25 March. I somehow managed to procure stock of Arhar and atta (flour) through a local trader. But things are getting difficult now," said owner of the Sanjay Stores in Vasant Kunj, a large residential area close to Delhi Airport.
Indian kitchens, particularly in the country's cow belt, cannot be run without atta (wheat flour) required to make roti (bread). Atta, comes through hundreds of flour mills located in the National Capital Region (NCR) of Delhi and its neighbouring states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
"My flour mill is open. I had managed a few labourers too. But the problem is I am not able to procure wheat as nearby grain markets are shut," Rajat Gupta a flour Mill owner told IANS.
According to him, once the flour mills starts getting adequate supply of wheat from the traders, the mills will work to its optimum capacity. Subsequently due to a shortfall in supply, prices of Atta have increased. Bhanu, a grocery shop owner of Greater Noida said that he used to sell a 5 kg packet of Ashirwad Atta at Rs 180 but now it is available at Rs 220.
In fact the entire operation of grain markets, flour mills, rice mills including production and supply of FMCG remained affected due to transport and labour issues said millers, distributors and industry bodies.
Om Prakash Garg, a prominent FMCG distributor of Delhi said that since past week, he has been facing problems in transporting goods to wholesalers and retailers.
ALSO READ: Coronavirus impact: Nomura lowers 2020 GDP growth forecast to -0.5%
"Stocks of biscuits, chocolates, milk powder and other items are available at depots but due to disruption in transportation, supply of these food items and dry fruits have been affected," said Garg.
Another distributor, Rajesh Gupta, dealing in spices in dry fruits was of the view that fresh stock of spices is not reaching him from production units. According to him, a famous brand of biscuits, manufactured in Delhi by prestigious company is reportedly running its their factory at its half strength, thus creating a shortage in supply of biscuits and rusks.
However, Industry bodies expect after intervention of the Centre, restoration of supply chain of the essential goods would be seen resulting in a delivery of FMCG and other essential items to the retailers.
Atul Chaturvedi, President, Solvent Extractors Association of India, said that restoration in the supply chain of edible oil, sugar and other food items has started. He said, around 40-50 per cent of the supply chain of edible oil, sugar and other food items has been reinstated.
Laxmichand Agarwal, President, Central Organisation for Oil Industry Trade (COOIT) said expellers producing mustard oil are in operation and its supply will be uninterrupted.
However, he accepted that prices of mustard oil have edged up amid supply disruption of food products but ruled out any expectation of further spikes in mustard oil as arrival season of new crop is going on and farmers are directly selling their crops to the expeller,
Similarly Jitu Bheda, Chairman, India Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA) also expect restoration in supply chain of food items soon. He said, "In fact, labourers are back to their home which is a major hurdle in restoration of supply and things will improve in the next 5-6 days."

How are Tibetan refugees doing as Dalai Lama celebrates his birthday
By Devanshi Verma & Raunak Sharma
Tenzin Gyatso was enthroned as the 14th Dalai Lama when he was five years old. At the outset of the 1959 Tibetan uprising, he along with his retinue fled to India. Some time later, the 23-year-old set up the Government of Tibet in Exile in Dharamshala, which is often referred to as 'Little Lhasa'. 80,000 Tibetan refugees followed him into exile. As he celebrates his 82nd birthday in Ladhak, we explore the settlement of his faithful disciples in the capital of the country he took refuge in.
Tranquility in the midst of chaos
An ornamental gate that looks like a piece of mystical art, stands tall at the entrance of New Aruna Nagar colony. On entering, one is a spectator to winding alleys, faint echoes of Dalai Lama's preachings, amiable women in traditional Tibetan attire selling street delicacies in the courtyard, two majestic monasteries, aromatic air and chiming prayer bells singing a melody. With Yamuna river on one side and national highway full of maddening traffic on the other, a Tibetan colony peacefully takes refuge in the middle of Delhi’s hustle-bustle. ‘Majnu Ka Tila’, as the area is known, may be geographically a part of India’s capital, but in its cultural and existential essence, is a different world altogether.

While hopping through grocery stores that sold authentic Tibetan spices, Yak cheese as well as Chinese biscuits and sodas, we noticed something head turning--a wheel on the counter rotating on its own, without any electric wire attached to it. It was a prayer wheel made of wood and operated much like a hand mill.
"Om Mani Padme Hum" is engraved on prayer wheels of all Tibetan temples. It means "In dependence on the practice of a path which is an indivisible union of method and wisdom, you can transform your impure body, speech, and mind into the pure exalted body, speech, and mind of a Buddha."
"Chanting the mantra out loud is equivalent to spinning the prayer wheels," explained a Lama or Tibetan monk, dressed in a red and yellow robe.
The Sanskrit mantra originated in India but later moved to Tibet. Some call it destiny and others Chinese invasion, the reason this mantra is back to India, along with its chanters. In 1960, the Chinese government adopted oppressive measures against the Tibetans, forcing these people to flee to India and save themselves from the brutality.
Although a Tibetan settlement, this area is culturally diverse, being home to other Asian immigrants--the Nepalese community being significant in number. One experiences the cultural milieu when a Bhutanese dish is presented by Nepali server at a Tibetan restaurant, in Delhi. Such is the beauty of Majnu ka Tila which has surely become a cultural melting pot.

‘Tibet is in my heart, but I am an Indian’
The Tibetans residing here can be divided into three broad categories--the first and foremost, who followed Dalai Lama to India in 1959. They can be accredited for the establishment of this safe haven that retains the cultural individuality of the community.
Then, there are the next generations born and brought up in India. “Tibet is in my heart, but I am an Indian. I have never been to Tibet, only heard stories but India is where I belong--it is my home,” says Karten Tsering, President of the Residents Welfare Association, New Aruna Nagar Colony. He calls himself an Indian and rightfully so--anybody born in the country is considered a citizen, according to the Indian constitution.
The third and the most recent generation constitutes the people who have recently come to the country in the hope of better education, employment prospects, and life. They seem to be struggling to adapt to the norms of a foreign country but, at least, they have companionship and familiarity, which is a major comforting factor for them. In a country far away from home, they have found a hope with the flame of a free Tibet illuminating their hearts.

Home away from home
A middle-aged woman on a street-side stall sold Laphing--spicy cold jelly noodle dish served with soya chunks. Although she had a constant serene smile on her face, her face reads of suffering. She was compelled to leave Tibet because of the ‘political outburst’ and the scars happened to remain. However, she is now content here. Even though she has been selling food on the streets for the past four years, she has managed to send off her children to study outside Delhi--son to Dharamshala and daughter to Mussoorie. These places also have Tibetan roots and they long to stay connected.    Speaking to a man in his late 50s, we discovered the other side of lives of Tibetan refugees in India. He was manning the desk at one of the numerous hotels that play a major role in the economy of the area. Spending 40 years in Indian states of Meghalaya, Karnataka and now Delhi, he is still struggling with basic necessities--a reason he did not marry. For a person who cannot keep his stomach full, it will be an added responsibility to support an entire family. He was never sure if he could provide them with a roof and chose the nomadic life. This is a shivering reality of most of them.
However, despite the air of melancholy surrounding these people, still, they continue to smile.   Gratefulness, diplomacy, silent agony
Meeting with the local association’s authorities, we understood that suffering is not limited to just the trauma of a lost home. Though these refugees get aid from the government and have legal rights but, deep down, are fighting a silent battle to meet the basic needs. "They are doing whatever they can. If Delhi government does not have enough water, how can we expect for extended supply? Same is the case of electricity." The spokesperson seemed to be in the state of acceptance with whatever they are being provided with.

Happy Birthday, His Holiness
Dalai Lama’s birthday falls on 6th of July and the enthusiasm for celebrating with performances, feasts and religious ceremonies is all over the place. The authorities informed that Delhi’s chief minister Arvind Kejriwal will be the guest of honour of the festivities.    To them, Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader, and patron saint is the manifestation of the supreme power--their faith is quite evident as every single set-up in the vicinity has a picture of him. A glance of him is all they crave for. But surprisingly, when asked about what they would like to say to him for his birthday, the chatty 25-year-old Tsering Choephel shied away, as if he is too small or insignificant to speak to the supreme.
They believe that Dalai Lama helped them settle in India, and he alone can take them back by liberating Tibet from China.
Next destination: Karnataka?
However, one thing that surprised us was that everybody aspired moving to Karnataka. Opportunity-wise there are more options for this community out there, which may have moved these people. Also, space wise Bylakuppe, a Tibetan town in Karnataka is way larger than here.
"We get food for free in the monasteries of Karnataka, better shelter, more business opportunities, climate cooler than Delhi", says a monk. Not one, but many of the Tibetans dwelling in Majnu-ka-tilla are looking forward to move to Karnataka.
As we roamed around, a Ganesha idol among Tibetan deities caught our attention. “Ganesha is one of the important deities of the Tibetans,” mentioned the young Tibetan boy manning the store. In another store owned by a Nepalese woman, a statue of their very own version of Ganesha lied on the counter. The Tibetan shopkeeper is only seven years old to the country. Like many others, he wishes to head to Karnataka.

The dream of returning to Tibet still inspires them. India has provided them a home away from home but nevetheless, it is a makeshift home. Assimilation is difficult, finding jobs tough, and speaking out publicly about lack of opportunities not welcomed. A refugee is a refugee at the end of the day and they should remain grateful for whatever they are getting -- a common assumption that is true for all host countries worldwide. Thus, we may celebrate Dalai Lama as ours but the refugees prefer to stay in the chrysalis they have built in the ‘Majnu Ka Tila’. The outside world of bustling city of New Delhi is too alien for them.

Sprout Seoul: Natural Healthy Whole Food Service
Last year, I thought my life in Seoul was pretty busy.  At the end of May 2016 I had finished a couple of months at a new job in the big city and was still struggling to make time to meal prep and hit the gym.  All I wanted to do was go home and sleep after work!  This year, my hours are longer and I’ve added a 45 minute commute each way.  When I started my new contract I made time to meal prep every Monday night, but my diet got a bit boring.  Sprout Seoul Natural Healthy Whole Food Service reached out to me about a week ago to partner up.  My crock-pot’s been dying for a break, so I thought I’d switch things up and go veggie for a few days!
About Sprout Seoul
Sprout Seoul claims to provide “ready-made, affordable, freshly prepared alternatives of some of the foods you may already love. We’re offering a tasty variety of sugar-free, additive-free, plant-based wholefoods for your palette.”  They have a store-front atop a hill in HBC, making it easy for me to walk from my little spot in Itaewon to pick up my food.
How to Order from Sprout Seoul
Head over to Sprout Seoul’s Order Form.  I had a 3-day package inclusive of daily breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a snack or dessert.  You can buy individual meals and snacks as well.  If you’re not keen on going totally vegan (or are trying to save money) you could do the 3 day plan.  You could split each entree into 2 meals and just add a chicken breast to lunch and dinner.  Dedicating myself to a vegetarian diet was something I didn’t think I could do.  Surprise!  I’ll  be continuing with the 5-day plan moving forward.  I can be flexitarian on weekends, right?
Be sure to mention *The Toronto Seoulcialite* when you order to get a free snack!
Meal Plan Options 3 days, 12 items: 75,000 (Save 6,000!) 5 days, 20 items: 115,000 (Save 20,000!) 7 days, 28 items: 150,000 (Save 39,000!)

Directions: Sprout Seoul Food Pick-Up & Delivery
Pick up is available on Sunday and Monday from 3pm-8pm.  We took the plunge and walked up HBC hill on a hot and sunny Sunday afternoon.  Sprout Seoul wasn’t too hard to find.  You can take the #2 little, green shuttle bus or you can walk!  If you’re taking the subway to Sprout Seoul, take Exit 2 of Noksapyeong Station and walk straight veering left at the kimchi pots and up the hill.  Stay on that main HBC street (Sinheung-ro) following as it continues to veer left.  At the plateau, turn left and walk down about half a block until you see their storefront on the main floor.
Delivery is once per week on Mondays.  Express Bike delivery is available in Seoul and is delivered either Monday afternoons or evenings.  Taekbae is delivered on Tuesdays in most areas.
Monday Afternoon Bike Delivery: 2pm-6pm to Yongsan-Gu (KRW 4,000) and other areas in Seoul (KRW 20,000).
Monday Evening Bike Delivery: between 6pm-10pm to Yongsan-Gu (KRW 4,000) and other areas in Seoul (KRW 20,000).
Taekbae delivers all across Korea on Tuesdays or Wednesdays (KRW 8,500).
Group Delivery: in Seoul area only as it’s not available for Taekbae.  Delivery fee is based on number of orders.
How Does the Food Taste?
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect as I had had previous, less thrilling, experiences with food subscription services in Seoul.  The food from Sprout Seoul is extremely filling.  It’s loaded with power foods like kale, chickpeas, chia seeds, lentils, and beans.  You will slow down and actually take your time enjoying the food.  Each meal/ snack has its own international flavour and flair.  In my first 3 days I had meals influenced by Mexican, Indian, Greek, Middle Eastern, and Singaporean cuisines.  The food was so good (and surprisingly saucy!) that I’ll be continuing with Sprout Seoul to lose my last 10 challenging pounds.  Follow my progress through diary entries on The Toronto Seoulcialite’s evil twin sister site That Girl Cartier.
#gallery-0-10 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-10 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-10 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-10 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Breakfast: Creamy Coconut Breakfast Bowl with Nuts, Seeds and Chocolate Chips
Dessert: Raw Reese’s Pieces Peanut Butter Pie
Lunch: Burrito Bowl
Dinner: Butter Chickpeas Curry
Does Sprout Seoul Live up to the Hype?
My Food and Fitness posts tend to be the most popular.  Everyone seems to expect they’ll lose weight in Korea.  Not only that, they seem to expect that they’ll move, indulge in sugary, salty Korean BBQ and the weight will just fall off.  That’s not the case!  I lost 50 lbs in Korea, but it certainly hasn’t been easy.  I do tend to indulge on the weekends, but it’s all about balance.  I’m very strict throughout the week, hit the gym frequently, and aim to know the nutritional content of all of my food.  Sprout Seoul doesn’t currently advertise their nutritional information (calories/ macros), but it’s in the works and will be published soon.  I was a little wary to follow a vegan meal plan as my diet throughout the week is typically low in carbohydrates and high in animal protein (meat and dairy).  I think that any change someone makes to their lifestyle will encourage a change within the body, but I was surprised at how my body has reacted already!
Claim 1:
Improve overall health and well being by eating natural whole foods, free of over-processed ingredients, chemicals and additives.
I tend to shop around the outside of the grocery store in an effort to take the processed out of my progress.  I was skeptical about whether my health and well-being would improve.  It was scary to add so many carbs to my everyday diet.  With Sprout Seoul I actually feel like I’m nourishing my body.  I eat each meal really slowly because they’re so filling.  This means I’m eating 8 small meals a day rather than 3 squares and a snack.  I have more energy, so I’ve cut my coffee intake from 2 cups to 1.  I’ve been able to peel myself outta bed in the morning and run 3 km or more as my warm up instead of my usual 1 and done pre-weightlifting.
Claim 2:
Convenient ready to eat meals, packaged to-go.
The packaging is super convenient.  I can stack each day in my fridge then grab and go for work.  It’s really handy not having to think about what to eat at 6 AM when I’m winding my way to the gym.  The hot meals even come in their own microwave-safe containers!
Claim 3:
Lose weight / improve BMI.
Any change in your diet will lead to a change in the makeup of your body.  I was very surprised, however, to weigh myself on Day 3 of Sprout Seoul to find that I lost 3 kg!  I’m sure that my change in energy levels has contributed to more effective workouts.  I don’t crave junk food so I haven’t hit up the convenience story for any sweet “If it Fits Your Macros” treats.  I did share some bingsu with a friend one night, but haven’t had any of my normal cravings.  Ps. if you’re a once-a-day kind of person you may be a little more “regular” than normal on this diet!
Claim 4:
Contribute to a sustainable eco-friendly Earth.
This is definitely a nice bonus, but on the whole I’m pretty responsible with regards to sustainability (you know, beyond the fact that I eat meat/ animal products).  I’m not well-educated on this point, but
Claim 5:
Enjoy delicious meals with international flavours.
It’s a food subscription service, so of course they’re going to claim to provide delicious meals.  Thankfully, Sprout actually does live up to the hype.  I haven’t been disappointed with a single meal.  The international flavour claim ups the ante as no two dishes have tasted the same.
Want to know exactly what I ate?  Stay tuned for links to diary entries and reviews of each Sprout Seoul dish I ordered!  Thanks to Sprout Natural Healthy Whole Food Service for keeping The Toronto Seoulcialite fit, nourished, and healthy!  While this article has been written in partnership, all reviews are honest and opinions are my own.

Chico Vegan Survival Guide
Chico CA- College students rejoice, Chico can offer you some tasty vegan-friendly treats. Chico is a college town located in the Northern Sacramento Valley, it is home to California State University Chico, and Bidwell Park the third largest municipal park in California. California State University Chico is the second oldest CSU campus. The City of Chico has molded over time to meet the needs of students, who play a large part in driving the local economy. It was not too long ago that finding vegan food options while eating out, seemed few and far between, however several locally owned restaurants now cater to this vegan/ vegetarian niche, it is only a matter of locating them. Not to mention the fact that Northern California is a hub for agriculture, making local and fresh food a real possibility.
Being a college student come with its own set of challenges including managing time and, finances now add trying to figure out a vegan lifestyle. There are plenty of students, at Chico State in the same boat struggling, to find parking on campus and dealing with the funky food served at Sutter Dining Hall.  “I ate at Sutter when I lived in the dorms freshman year. They didn't have too many vegan options back then, but they did have a solid amount of vegetarian options” says Nicole a senior at Chico State. With the rise in plant based lifestyles, college dining halls too have had to adjust their menus in order to better serve students living a plant based lifestyle. According to Peta in 2011, about 5% of the population in the United States identified as vegetarians, and half of these individuals are also vegan, this number is only expected to increase. So, what is a vegan? In short veganism is defined as “a strict vegetarian who consumes no animal by products (such as meat, eggs, or dairy products.)
When it comes to a quote-on-quote healthy diet, college students often joke about eating nothing but pizza or Top Ramen, nevertheless the cost of food is a constant factor in purchasing decisions for college students across the board. Veganism contrary to popular belief can and should be affordable. “Grocery shopping as a vegan is super affordable, rice, beans, fruits, veggies, and grains are all- reasonably priced” says Elcid who is part of the Chico State Nutrition Program, however “getting more organic produce can be expensive.” Nicole has been eating vegan for about a year, “I feel I spend the same amount on groceries as my non-veggie friends” she shares.
Dining out with friends, may be one of the most intimidating events for vegans. Animal products seem to sneak their way into so many foods, such as foods fried with lard or ingredients disguised with names like gelatin, animal products are everywhere. Tea Bar is a Chico Favorite with two locations one near the Butte College Campus and another in the Downtown Chico area it is a perfect spot to grab a meal and a drink. Although teas are their specialty their menu boasts vegan items like, miso soup, hummus, fresh baked Naan bread, and warm edamame. Their bowls and wraps provide filling and nutritious options, including grilled ginger tofu and a variety of grains and salad options.
“    Gogi’s is my top spot because of the vegan dishes. I love Indian food and that particular cuisine has the tastiest vegan food. I usually order the tofu curry masala. The couple that owns the restaurant uses all local and organic produce as well.” Says Elcid with 10 months as a vegan under his belt. Gogi’s Café is located only 1 block away from the CSU Chico campus, making it the perfect place to drop by in-between classes. Gogi’s promises delicious Indian food that is fast, healthy and authentic. Lucky for vegan’s Indian cuisine is known for its use of delicious curries full of legumes, and other vegetables. This downtown restaurant, offers a variety of Indian classics, such as Chana Masala, and Aloo Gobi year-round. When asked about the cost of eating at Gogi’s Elcid mentioned “I believe the pricing is perfect. I pay 10$ for a hefty amount of food. Gogi’s also has a student meal that’s only 6$! “
Pho is a popular Vietnamese soup, that contains rice noodles and a variety of toppings often steak or shrimp. Traditionally Pho broth is made with beef bones, and may include fish sauce for added flavor. Most vegans will not consume any broth that contains or is made with animal products, posing an issue for Pho lovers. The Noodle House and Everyday Vietnamese Cuisine are two local restaurants that offer a tofu noodle soup in a vegan friendly vegetable based broth.
“Fresh Twisted Cafe is my favorite place to go out- the vegan cream cheese is so good. They also make great burrito bowls with soyrizo” Nicole shares. Fresh Twisted Café is locally owned and operated and is located on Eaton Road in North Chico. This café offers a diverse menu including breakfast items, savory bowls and fresh smoothies. The local grub spot is open seven days a week, and does a great job at catering to the vegan niche, offering vegan soyrizo as a meat substitution on almost any menu item. The menu ranges from breakfast burritos, to sandwiches, burgers and hearty soups. The menu is set up so that a customer can build anything to meet their needs, including gluten free options.
The latest vegan friendly spot to open in Chico is OM Foods, located in the Safeway shopping center on West Sacramento. Its pop up location makes it a great place to stop by and grab a bite anytime during the week. Om foods offers local seasonal vegan and organic lunch. Their non-GMO vegan bowls and nachos are a fan favorite. The menu has something for everyone, including vegan tacos, tempeh burgers and wraps as well as a vegan BLTA. You can grab ½ a taco salad or nachos and a drink for only 7 dollars, thanks to their student special. Om Foods is locally owned and opened its doors, just last year.
There are also several chain restaurants in the Chico area that provide vegan options, Taco Bell for example can substitute meat with black beans, on any regular menu item. In 2015 Taco Bell launched its certified vegan menu, with recipes certified by the American Vegetarian Association (AVA). This is a big step for the fast food industry, the reality is most fast food chains only offer a few vegan friendly options, potentially excluding customers and overall costing the company revenue. The Taco Bell vegan menu includes, a Cantina Powered Veggie Bowl, a Double Tostada, and a 7 Layer Burrito. Taco Bell is a very affordable option, for vegan college students. Chipotle is another chain restaurant that offers a variety of vegan options. Any of their burritos or burrito bowls can be made vegan. Sofritas are a popular vegan menu item, they can only be described as braised tofu with poblano and chipotle peppers. Chipotle offer’s free guacamole on any veggie bowl- excluding the Sofritas. Most of their menu items including the tortillas, vegetables, rice, beans, chips, salsa, and guacamole are 100% vegan.
“Take advantage of the Wildcat pantry!” says Nicole. The wildcat food pantry is located in Kendall Hall, Room 110, and is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 4pm. The wildcat food pantry often offers fresh veggies grown on the university farm, or donated by community member’s. The Pantry is a confidential zone, without judgment, and is ran by the honor system without validation of need. The Wildcat Food Pantry is available to any Chico State undergraduate or graduate student who is experiencing food insecurity. It is estimated that about 40% of Chico State students suffer from food insecurity. The Wildcat Food pantry aims to provide delicious, and nutritious food, for any students in need. There are plenty of reasons to explore vegan food as a college student for example, it can be very affordable when on a tight budget, not to mention the benefits of increasing one’s overall fruit and vegetable consumption.
As more people turn to plant based lifestyles, maintaining a vegan diet is becoming simpler, even for broke college students. Except when there’s free burgers on campus and you cannot have any, because they never bring out any veggie burgers. With that said The Marketplace located inside the Bell Memorial Union (BMU), on campus offers salad bowls, very similar to those prepared at Tea Bar, pairing grains and tofu with mixed greens and vegan friendly dressings. “The best thing about being a vegan college student is connecting with other vegans and non-vegans in a college environment. I’m into bodybuilding and majority of the people in my sub culture consume animal products. Once I tell them I’m vegan, they get shocked and become intrigued with my lifestyle. It gives me an opportunity to preach about veganism and its overall benefits to our health and environment” Elcid shared.  Chico is a great place for foodies, there is a variety of ethnic, and classic American food joints to satisfy anyone’s cravings, remember you do not have to be vegan to enjoy a vegan friendly meal.
