While fighting Malenia in Elden Ring, I got to thinking about different the progression in different stats is, particularly in damage vs. levelling HP/stamina.
In RPGs, damage is always important, you need it to end fights, but… increasing damage just ends the fight sooner, and doesn’t change what happens during the fight itself (unless you need to nuke a guy so hard that he can’t respond).
In contrast, upgrading Souls/ER stamina changes how you actually fight. You can do longer attack combos, and chain attacks and dodges for longer without needing to pause. You can also block more dangerous attacks; tanking a supermove like Waterfowl Dance with 0 damage taken feels great and makes the fight much easier.
Boosting HP also changes how you fight; it’s not just “alive/dead”. More HP means you can take more hits before dying, which also means you can take more hits before worrying about dying. You can accept trades and risky moves, or keep on the offensive when damaged, without worrying that you’re going to evaporate to the next hit. And not being constantly on the edge lets you wait until you have a natural opening to heal, rather than trying to force one and risk getting punished.
Stereotypically, RPGs have you choose between passive and active upgrades, a useful-but-boring numerical boost or a shiny new ability. The latter is more exciting, but sometimes it’s “wasted” because you need to remember to use it, or you’ve got enough abilities to use already.
It’s nice how Souls stamina/HP gives you the best of both worlds; they’re always-active passive boosts that naturally unlock new options and change how you fight as you progress.
(It’s also interesting to note how Souls/ER tie weapon and spell access to your offensive stats, which stops them just being number-goes-up as you unlock new movesets and attacks too.)

thinking about team galactic again, this time their building design
disregarding the laziness that is dps designs, that look like boring office buildings with cut and paste objects, the platinum places are actually quite nice
both buildings follow a similar format if you care to examine them, and that being a distinct bottom/middle/top floor look its an interesting design philosophy for both of their buildings, the HQ and the eterna building to look like this obviously it is a very blatant ‘spacey’ effect in design, trying to really invoke what the word ‘galactic’ makes you think of. but i believe it is a tad bit more nuanced then that
the bottom most floor has a brown floor the bottom floor is less corporate, more friendly. there might be the odd metal in the design, but industrial does not always mean sinister. this is good for pretending there is some sort of guise of goodness about team galactic to civilians who waltz in. likewise, the brown is dirt, an earthy tone. as the base floor, it is the most grounded, connected to the planet. connected to everyone and everything easily. this is were a rocket would take off from
Tumblr media
the middle floors have a metallic floor the middle floors are definitely more corporate, steel and other metal is everywhere, the sinister underbelly is beginning to really show itself. this is where most grunts and scientists operate, unaware of what they are truly doing. furthermore, the steely floor and overall aesthetic comes off more like the inside of a rocket ship, something that would not have a proper floor covered by tile or carpet. the building is rising higher into the sky, much like the rockets goal to reach the stars
Tumblr media
and the top floor has an animated starry night wall paper, with an added dark fog effect speaking of stars, the top floor has those and the dark atmosphere. of course, these are where commander/boss battles happen and add to the serious vibe. they want to seem different and standoffish enough to feel intimidating, while also keeping to the outer space vibe. likewise once more, the rocket has finally reached the stars. the top floor has gone as far as it can to graze the sky and the atmosphere. the dark fog is the density of space surrounding you, with only the lights of the ship and stars to guide you around
Tumblr media
the laboratory somewhat fits into the space theming, but more tangentially
instead of just being in space, you have gone so far that you have landed on an alien world. the walls feel like they dont belong on earth, as do the experiments taking place here. it feels like something you would expect of hostile extraterrestrials and not humans. there is also a slight dark tinge over the screen in game to make it more ominous
Tumblr media
obviously the few exceptions to this are the warehouse, and rotom room the warehouse is supposed to seem more unassuming and damp, thus a similar vibe to the base floor, and the rotom room was probably tacked on in secret by charon himself given how hidden and out of the way it is in general i just.. adore the theming that is, for the most part, very consistent in platinum regarding the buildings

Understanding Your Landlord Insurance Policy
Tumblr media
If you rent one property for additional cash or own a whole entire apartment community, it's to cover yourself with a landlord insurance policy. If you are a new landlord, you might be unaware that any homeowner's policy simply won't suffice in most situations. In reality, unless you stay in the same home as your tenant, you may want to explore landlord building insurance to cover your investment.
Landlord Insurance - what is it?
Similar to a home owners policy, landlord insurance coverage for rental properties will prevent you from potentially losing everything after a natural disaster or other catastrophic . However, in the same way your home owner's policy will require certain riders to be totally effective, you'll want to cautiously evaluate landlord insurance options. For right now, we'll focus on the a few core basics that every policy should provide.
Liability Protection - Preventative maintenance complications like cracked sidewalks or an icy parking lot could easily equal to a serious financial loss. Fortunately, liability insurance will help cover medical and legal bills.
Property Damage - Natural disasters, vandalism, gas/electric malfunction and reckless tenants might lead to massive damage to your rental property. The best choice is to find landlord property insurance that provides you with replacement value or cost. Be sure to keep clear of less effective, cheap landlord insurance policies a that offer actual value instead. Making the mistake of selecting the wrong policy could cost you a lot of money in the long run.
Rental Default/Lost Rental Property Insurance - Much like Major league baseball teams taking out contract insurance policies for big name players, you will want to be sure that you don't lose lots of money should your house goes on the disabled list. In essence, this particular portion of your landlord house insurance is there to cover your losses in case the property has become temporarily unliveable. This means that, if you can't gather rent for a few months as a result of massive mouse infestation, your policy will repay you for your lost rental income.
Every landlord home insurance quote should reference these three policy provisions, along with how much coverage you'll have in each category.
What Does DP Mean in Terms of Landlord Insurance?
You can expect landlord insurance quotes to include some new lingo. A common phrase that confuses some individuals is DP accompanied by a number after it. DP means 'dwelling property,' Otherwise known as the house or building you'll be renting out. The state that the property is located in will make a difference in the exact coverage provided by DP-1, DP-2 and DP-3, so make sure you verify your state's particulars.
Here's a simple guide to the differences among these landlord protection insurance options.
1. DP-1 - This is the most basic, bare bones policy you can get. If you're thinking about cheap landlord insurance, this can be the insurance policy type for you. Nevertheless, don't forget that DP-1 policies normally provide actual cash value as opposed to replacement value.
2. DP-2 - As an average, middle of the road policy, DP-2 is a preferred option. After all, this policy offers more protection than DP-1 and frequently comes with replacement cost coverage. This is not the very best landlord insurance, but it is a decent policy at a less expensive amount.
3. DP-3 - If you want the very best landlord insurance policy possible, you will need to choose DP-3. This comprehensive coverage includes everything with the exception of specific rider exclusions. It's generally written to provide replacement value rather than actual cash value.
Exactly How Much Does Landlord Insurance Cost?
The typical cost of landlord insurance will change based on your exact area and how much insurance coverage you would like. Additional riders will also increase the expense of your policy. For a standard plan, you can expect to pay close to 25 percent more than you do for homeowners insurance. For instance, if you're paying $800 per year for homeowner's insurance, your landlord insurance rates will be around $1,000.
Landlord Home Insurance Riders
Be sure to include any optional riders you might need when comparing landlord insurance quotes. Even though these riders will heighten the cost of your policy, they will likely also provide you with some much-needed reassurance. One thing that a lot of individuals do not know is that a lot of policies {exclude|leave out flood damage. Thus, in case you own a rental property inside of an location that's vulnerable to flooding, you really should consider adding flood damage coverage.
Some of the most popular residential landlord insurance riders include:
Flood Insurance - Any property in a flood zone needs this rider.
Emergency Coverage - This will help cover charges incurred by responding to a tenant's after-hours emergency call.
Guaranteed Income Insurance - This policy helps you get paid for the regular monthly rent even if your tenant is unable to do so.
Burglary Protection - Do you store any items within the property? With a landlord contents insurance rider, you'll be able to protect your personal belongings against burglary.
Building Codes Coverage - Is the property older or are you within an area that is known for finding building code violations? This coverage may possibly pay for some building code upgrades.
Will the Tenant Still Need Renter's Insurance?
Renter's insurance covers the tenant's personal items within the property. Most renter's insurance policies also provide the tenant with coverage in the event they're personally responsible for starting a fire or causing some other type of catastrophic matter.
One of the frequent misconceptions is that the landlord's insurance policy will cover the previously listed items for his or her tenants. This is not the situation, therefore you should motivate every tenant to get their own renter's policy. Certain landlords won't rent to people unless they provide proof that they have renter's insurance. It's up to you whether or not you do this this.
What About Homeowners Insurance for Rental Property Coverage?
Suppose you own a house you are renting out for a bit of additional money, and this property is insured by a homeowner's policy. That means you're a-ok, right? Unfortunately, this belief is inaccurate in most cases. The one situation where your homeowners insurance will cover you for landlord related issues occurs when you physically live in the household. Therefore, in case you have two properties and you're renting one out while living in the second, you will need to get a landlord policy.
Understanding Landlord Insurance Comparison Sites
It's normal to try to find the very best landlord insurance providers using comparison sites. However, there are a few things you will need to be aware of before you start collecting quotes. Every policy has unique provisions, of course, however, this level of nuance may not be presented on comparison sites
Ensure that you know if you are looking at landlord rental insurance that is comprehensive or basic. Be sure to verify whether each listed policy has the right amount of landlord liability insurance for the property in question. Search for details on any available riders. Once you think you've got a good handle on everything, get a hold of the companies that gave you the best quotes to validate all the details. Think about creating a spreadsheet first to simplify the process of gathering information.
Does an Airbnb Property Require Landlord Insurance?
Landlord insurance providers might have a variety of answers to that question. Some companies state that you need to have coverage for the length of time when you will not be staying in the house. Other companies view short-term vacation tenants as being completely different from actual tenants, especially if you physically inhabit the home most of the time. Either way, it is always safer to ask than to end up in the wrong situation later on.
Don't forget: there has been numerous publicized instances of Airbnb tenants producing extensive damage. In one more recent case, a group of eight tenants took $5,000 worth of stuff and they even destroyed the owner's pieces of furniture. Furthermore, the renters left waste all over the house and filled it with the odor of smoke.
If your homeowners' insurance policy does not cover short-term vacation rentals, you might get stuck covering everything in the event of an unscrupulous tenant. On the other hand, you can do something now to protect yourself by working with a landlord insurance professional. They can assist you in choosing the best coverage to fit your particular needs.
