welcome to the danse macabre
Tumblr media
pov: the commander has just been murdered by the rogue god Balthazar and his son has decided that you, Rytlock Brimstone, are the problem
(art done by @telltalecoyote)
Grief surrounds me, mixed with confusion and a singular spark of outrage, but I push aside my own pain and focus on Oberon and Sigmund, seizing theirs instead. Their eyes flare a bright pink as they stand rigid–  then their weapons are out and Oberon is charging down Rytlock while his cub nocks a crystal-headed arrow onto his bow. Remorse tugs at my concentration–while Vlast’s echoes may not forgive me, I know Sig will, but that doesn’t make me feel better–but I push on while the rest of the group focuses on evading the tumbleweed that is Rytlock and Oberon. The traitorous charr allows himself to be bowled over, and in that moment Sig halts his fire to avoid skewering his sire.  Though I didn’t expect him to fight smart, the wind is on my side: barely a thought is needed for it to carry me towards them. I drift toward the wrestling charr and command Oberon–the lieutenant kicks Rytlock and rolls away towards his fallen gunblade.  Arrows begin to rain around us, and Rytlock shouts, “Dammit, cub, don’t do this!” “I have every right to kill you!” Arrows that would hit me are torn asunder as I lash a whip of pink energy forward. “Balthazar–” “You won’t have to worry about Balthazar!”

I should post my sketches more, I've been getting better at doing them quicker!
Two recent ones feat @nullvoidface and Oberon, maybe this old charr CAN get into Necromancy as the first pic shows.

Rejoice, the old men are happy! A non performative smile from Oberon! A short story below the cut...
Gaius Horncleaver @commanderhorncleaver
"Our boy is more than amazing, Gaius; he's damn healthy! Healthier than a healer on an uneventful patrol day!" Oberon exclaimed, punctuating his excitement with hearty laughter. Not a single laugh, however, disturbed their cub, peacefully sleeping within Oberon's gentle hold.
"He's not coughing, his eyes are fine—Cassius gave him a thorough examination five times over, and he even compared notes with Aereth! We did a damn good job with him."
As the gravity of the situation set in, Oberon's laughter began to subside. "He won't have to worry that he's not built to survive this world. And even if that were the case after all, he'll never be alone. I'm not leaving his side, never."
Releasing Gaius from under his arm, Oberon lifted their swaddled cub up to his face. The young feline's slumber came to an end as he stirred with a squeaky yawn, a small paw reaching out to grip at the old charr's nose.
Gaius had witnessed Oberon's happiness on various occasions—like when Oberon eagerly awaited Gaius' reaction to an old gift; a now-lost ornate lighter Oberon had etched himself in the jungles of Maguuma or when they spend another one of their many intimate nights together, fur against fur. Especially memorable was the radiant smile he gave when Gaius brought Oberon into the lover's fold as one of his husbands...
And yet, this moment dared to surpass them all. The adoration in Oberon's eyes as he looked at their cub, the sheer joy in his voice—it proved Gaius wrong about never seeing Oberon happier than those previous times, and he couldn't be happier about it.

Quick icon edits I had made for something. I had the idea, "these would be their dialogue portraits in a Fire Emblem type game."
Top two are Cassius Witherpaw, middle are Dusty Wanderhorn, and then Oberon Furyhorn.
Bottom two are @commanderhorncleaver

Would your charr choose to sire any cubs?
Tumblr media
Oberon is always willing to have more, but none are more dear to him than Sigmund. (Literally, he's only aware of another cub of his-- who hates his guts and has tried to kill Oberon on numerous occasions!) If you ask him further, he's certain the rest are doing just fine, probably.
Sigmund is fine, either way. He has no strong desire, especially if there's a chance that they can inherit the same illnesses that he and his brother have.
Tumblr media
Dusty has sired cubs before, but that was ages ago. He's not interested for a number of reasons, the main one being a sense of inadequacy; he doesn't feel attractive enough, he thinks there are better things to do-- and he CERTAINLY isn't sure how he feels about cubs are being raised these days! Look at Gaius and Oberon, back in his day, not a single charr would consider being the type of sire they are to their cubs.

Charr Posting 2/3 (big cats good)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oberon Furyhorn
Every society has the "model citizen" that the public all aspires to be, and Oberon Furyhorn was that individual in his time
As talented with a blade as he was with his tools, Oberon was fit for almost every and any task that was asked of this Centurion, his warband was held up to the highest regard and for good reason!
Oberon was living the dream... and then he seemingly woke up from it. Nobody but his closest allies know why, but out of nowhere, Oberon began to neglect his responsibilities, started to show no respect for his fellow authorities, and above all else-- he became disillusioned with charr society.
The biggest display of such was when he intervened with the decision made to include his cub, Sigmund, in a culling. Oberon is no doubt the sire to many cubs, which is what made it so surprising that he aimed to spare this one.
The former Centurion, despite no longer holding as much power as he used to, is still regarded as a man of many talents, and if you could get this brash old man to work with you, you wouldn't regret it! Stay on his good side, or else you may see why he was put on trial more than a few times. As of now, Gaius Horncleaver is the only other charr known to have wrangled this stallion under his control, proving to be a lifelong companion he'd hold dearly.
On a... lighter note, despite his old age, the charr acts with the energy (and libido, hue) of a charr a quarter of his age! He's no slouch, and won't back down from any challenge or trial put in front of him, using his custom blade to cut down anything in his way!

12, 13, and 15!
12. Did they lose anyone?
Cassius' warband, the Wither warband, lost a majority of their members prior to his recruitment which is part of why he was allowed to join at the time! It already consisted of older, reckless charr who never changed their ways, causing them to bleed numbers over the years. No need to comment on Cassius' brief stint in the Ruin warband.
For Arkhan, the Dread warband only lost their legionnaire to a blade in the dark, replaced by Arkhan's close friend in the fahrar, Nyx Dreadstep! The Dread warband was already born from a close knit group of cubs in the fahrar anyways.
Oberon's original warband before the Horns, the Fury warband, was mostly decimated in an operation that also resulted in Oberon losing his arm, he chose to leave them in frustration, believing that they let him down.
Sigmund's warband before the Horns, the Spark warband, had never lost anybody!
13. Would the warband accept new entries?
The Wither warband is in no state to recruit, being in such small numbers, they're more likely to split up and join other warbands instead.
The Dread warband is more inclined to refuse new arrivals, being such a close knit group with a hyper specific niche that has such a unique chemistry with one another. However, "if you can prove you can hang with them" through challenges that are definitely not just there for their own entertainment, they might give you a second opinion!
The Fury warband is actively seeking new warriors, Oberon is more than aware with how often he checks up on them-- still wanting them to succeed even if he no longer associates.
The Spark warband would accept! However, they're hardly an official warband, mostly consisting of the similarly disabled charr that Sigmund grew up with on the farms, but Sigmund worked hard to get them recognized with the help of Gaius.
15. How has the warband changed over the years?
Before Cassius' departure, the Wither warband was in steady decline thanks to their eagerness to always be on the frontline, and that never changed, it pains Cassius to know this as he viewed them as the only family he had.
The Dread warband is still thriving, finding plenty of success in their position as Blood Legion's premiere "interrogation" and definitely not torture/execution warband. The band was split during the civil War, but they've long since made up and remain on "amicable terms".
Like Dread, the Fury warband took heavy hits in the civil war, the older charr held the line with their numbers, but their age started to show, and they weren't inclined to retire. They spend their time these days training with younger warbands.
The Spark warband, now that they are officially recognized as an actual warband, spend their time working on tech to help similarly disabled charr not just in Iron legion, but the others as well! Even open to collaboration with the other races of Tyria.
