THERION: What do you mean “King”? ELION: Yes, pray tell, what do you mean? TAYUIN: Why should we discuss anything in front of you? Can’t you wait outside? KYRIE: Tay… ELION: Rest assured, Prince of Faeries, I’ve no love in my heart for the Church. I won’t betray you to the clergy. I’m just here to keep your sainted priest safe and sound. KYRIE: He’s true to his word. At least, he’s kept it thus far. EIRA: What happened to your respect for authority? ELION: Darling, the only authority I’m interested in is in this room. EIRA: You really need to evaluate your priorities. KYRIE: Enough. Can we please focus? Lord Tev’us, care to explain? TAYUIN: I wouldn’t. We have no idea who this guy is. SARAYN: And why should I care either way? As far as I can tell, no one is trying to murder us. To these so-called vigilantes, the Chosen Ten must look like helpless victims drafted into a merciless battleground. If they’d like to bring the fight to our front, I am more than happy to accept the challenge. EVE: Let’s not be unreasonable. I’m sure most of us here would prefer to avoid violence. At least we should all be fully aware of all the stakes. So, if you will, please proceed. Let’s put everything out on the table here and now. SARAYN: Very well. It’s no secret. When the Valkyrie and I were transported into the past thanks to your charming display of self-control— EVE: That’s so unnecessary! ASTER: If this whole magic tradition thing falls through, we ten would excel as a theater troupe! KYRIE: Lord Tev’us, do continue. SARAYN: We were witness to, what I assume to be, some sort of cover-up. One of the Chosen murdered by elves of the royal guard. KYRIE: Are you certain this is what you saw? SARAYN: Without question. ÅSE: Deathling is not wrong. It was all very confusing. Though, it seemed that all were familiar. They knew each other. Still, they killed him all the same… SARAYN: Before he was slain, the elf, Castien Thallan, alluded to having angered his father. The ambush seemed to be the escalation of a particularly long-standing conflict. Either Thallan’s father had substantial pull in the royal sphere, or was one who could command such an attack. Someone like the King. THERION: Killing his bastard and hiding the evidence? That’s low. SARAYN: Perhaps. In any case, the guard made it clear that Castien was not the first.

TALILA: What’s going on? This all seems very official… EVE: And worrisome. Kyrie, you look like you’ve seen a ghost. KYRIE: I’m just upset… No, I’m passed upset. EVE: It’ll be alright. We’ll get through it, whatever it is, but first you need to calm down. KYRIE: I’m trying. EVE: Deep breaths. KYRIE: Right. ÅSE: Enough of this. Stop smacking around tree. What is going to be done! TALILA: Has something happened? KYRIE: Please, everyone, sit down. KYRIE: I made a promise to you all to be honest. Admittedly, I don’t know all the details myself, but the truth is… I’m alone in this. I expect some of you still see me as part of this system, and I can’t fault you for it. But with things getting so difficult, I don’t know who else to turn to but the ten of you. I trust all of you more than anyone else. SARAYN: And him? Shouldn’t we be introduced to our mysterious twelfth? KYRIE: Everyone, this is Elion. He’s been assigned to my protection, and I can go nowhere without him. You see, before you all arrived here, my sister, Lady Alphanei Loren, was taken hostage by a vigilante group known as the Knights of Dawn. They are ransoming her life in return for the disbanding of the trials. A plan that won’t work for them while I still live. They’ve already made one attempt on my life. If Lord Tev’us hadn’t been with me that night, surely I’d already be dead. ÅSE: Mm… TALILA: How awful! But… how are we just now hearing of it? Why wouldn’t they want us to know? THERION: I expect they don’t want anyone to know. Stirring up confusion and fear makes for panic. Panic is hard to control. INDRYR: And they are all about control. EIRA: So what? If we sit here with our thumbs up our asses, they’ll just send more people to kill you. Does your Priestess think she can lock you— and us— up forever? KYRIE: Lucien is dead. This isn’t something they can contain. The entire city will be in chaos soon enough. EVE: Lucien is dead? But why? Who would kill him? INDRYR: That is the question. Considering everything, it would be naïve to think the two matters were not connected. ÅSE: He is innocent child! What cares he about knights and dawn? It is absurd! INDRYR: Yes, the child was almost certainly innocent. I expect it is more what he represented. ASTER: Well, don’t speak in riddles! Not all of us grew up in libraries, you know! KYRIE: Represents… Of course. EVE: Oh… Lucien’s mother… KYRIE: The Aravae offer enormous financial support to the church. Aside from the Eveydan Crown, they’re the main source of funding. Unbelievable. The Queen of Kera was the leading supporter for the Selenehelion’s reformation… SARAYN: Then they are not at all interested in compromise. Bloodsport or not, it seems they will stop at nothing to bring the ceremony down entirely. I expect they have very good reason. EIRA: Being angry about how a ceremony was conducted centuries ago doesn’t make a great case for slaughtering children. SARAYN: But it was not centuries ago. Those that have been robbed by these trials still live. To lose a love, a purpose… a King. No, I doubt they have forgotten. And I doubt less they shall forgive.

TAYUIN: I didn’t mean to avoid you. That is, I wasn’t trying to hurt you or make you think I didn’t want to be around you. I was just— KYRIE: Avoiding the conversation. I know. TAYUIN: But that was stupid, too. KYRIE: Yes. But understandable. TAYUIN: No, it isn’t. I know you’re not like that. You mean well and you don’t try to push me about things. Back in the cave, I know now you only said it because you wanted to help. KYRIE: I said it because I didn’t understand. TAYUIN: Maybe. But since then, you’ve been nothing but patient. Don’t think I don’t see that. KYRIE: So it’s worth something to you? TAYUIN: I do appreciate it. I just get a little confused. When people are kind to me, I always expect it’s with bad intentions. I don’t exactly know how to… KYRIE: I know. TAYUIN: I was afraid of telling you what happened with the witch because I didn’t want you to feel guilty. It was my choice. Just like taking the curse on was yours. You were in a bad way and I didn’t want to make things worse for you. KYRIE: But it wasn’t easy on you, either. TAYUIN: I don’t need you to worry about me. KYRIE: I’m not asking permission. TAYUIN: sighs I wish you were cruel. I know how to manage cruelty. KYRIE: With all due respect, I hardly think “manage” is the right word. TAYUIN: I’m alive, aren’t I? KYRIE: Yes, you are. But not living. I wish you’d open yourself up to kindness. It’s a problem I want you to have. Learning to accept someone’s affection? Yeah. I want you to manage that. TAYUIN: If I tell you, promise me you won’t blame yourself. KYRIE: You don’t have to tell me— TAYUIN: I want to. KYRIE: Alright. I promise. TAYUIN: The witch… She told me I can never be Chosen of the Sun. That even if I’m to somehow win, if I accept the mantle… you’ll die. So, no matter what happens, I can’t win. I can’t be the one. And if the Moon says otherwise, I’ll still refuse. My wish isn’t worth your life. KYRIE: Tay… TAYUIN: Whatever your visions tell you, whenever they come back, you have to pick someone else. I have to do everything I can to lose this— TAYUIN: …why? KYRIE: I feel a lot. That’s what kissing is for, isn’t it? When you… feel too much? I don’t know. I’ve never kissed anyone before. KYRIE: I’m sor— TAYUIN: I can’t. KYRIE: Tay— TAYUIN: I can’t do this. You should hate me. You will hate me. KYRIE: I wouldn’t hate you. Why would you think that? TAYUIN: When I said I didn’t get the letter yet, I was lying. KYRIE: You…? TAYUIN: You seemed so happy when you came to me, I didn’t want to be the one to ruin it. I wanted to spend the day with you, so I lied to avoid bringing it up. But I can’t let you go on like this. I can’t know when you don’t. KYRIE: You… read it. TAYUIN: I knew something was off the moment I saw it. I should have just given it to you, but I… It wasn’t my right to read it and I’m sorry, but I don’t regret it. Because I know that giving this to you will shatter everything, and I wasn’t ready to lose your smile. I’m sorry! TAYUIN: Why? Why! Don’t you hate me— KYRIE: I told you, I wouldn’t hate you. If our positions were reversed, I’d have done the same.

HIGH PRIESTESS: I want sentries at every door. Put them on the roofs if you have to. KYRIE: What’s going on? HIGH PRIESTESS: There’s been an attack. Elion, you’re not to leave his side. Not one moment. ELION: Understood. KYRIE: What is happening? For once can you just give me a direct answer?! HIGH PRIESTESS: sighs Prince Lucien… he is dead. KYRIE: W-What? HIGH PRIESTESS: Murdered in his own bed. I… don’t know what to think anymore. KYRIE: H-How? Who— HIGH PRIESTESS: The Guard have someone in custody, but I’m not taking any chances. Kyrie, call the Chosen. They are not to leave the premise until further notice. INDRYR: Some of us have already come. If we’re to be locked down, I think we have a right to know why. HIGH PRIESTESS: His Grace will explain to you at a later— KYRIE: Lucien has been killed. ÅSE: Hah? Dead? What is meaning of this? Who is culprit? What is being done?! HIGH PRIESTESS: This is none of your concern. It will be dealt with— EIRA: Like you’ve dealt with everything else? ÅSE: You will deal with me! You tell me what is going on in this city! Nothing is right here! You are all foul! I wish not to share breath with you a moment more! EIRA: Åse— ÅSE: No! I am not to be calmed! That child was innocent, and there is killers crawling all over this place! Where is justice? HIGH PRIESTESS: Kyrie. Get them under control. The trials will be postponed. Soon there will be envoys from Kera arriving. It’s going to be a political nightmare… KYRIE: Is that all you care about? We’ve known the Prince since he was— HIGH PRIESTESS: We will speak later. Elion. ELION: Yes, Mistress. ÅSE: And you, Priest! Are you to be like cattle herd? What have you to say?! EIRA: Åse, stop it. TAIYO: Your Grace? Maybe you should sit down… KYRIE: I’m fine. TAIYO: If you’re unwell, you shouldn’t push yourself. INDRYR: I have something for queasiness. EIRA: I’ll get Eve. KYRIE: Please, I’ll be fine. We should gather the others. We have a lot to discuss.

KYRIE: Al? ALPHANEI: There you are. I thought you’d never wake. KYRIE: Wake? No… I’m… I’m dreaming. You’re gone. ALPHANEI: So I am. And you’re losing faith. KYRIE: I don’t know what to do. I don’t know how to help you. Everything feels so out of my control. ALPHANEI: I know. KYRIE: Tell me where you are. Tell me how to find you. ALPHANEI: Not this time, little brother. KYRIE: But— ALPHANEI: It’s like I always told you. The Moon watches over us, and only she knows the way. KYRIE: Don’t give me that nonsense. The Moon has never done anything for us. Even now, I can’t see a damn thing. If it wasn’t for her, we wouldn’t be here. We’d be somewhere else, living normal lives, and you’d be safe. ALPHANEI: Is it really true that she gives us nothing? Do you think you’d be happier never knowing them? KYRIE: I… ALPHANEI: It’s not a perfect life, but it was ours. KYRIE: We deserved better. ALPHANEI: So many of us do. Do not forget what drives the Selenehelion, truly. All those wishes longing to be granted. I know you hear them, too. KYRIE: And all the pain? All the suffering it’s caused? ALPHANEI: Mm. Remember it, Kyrie. When the time is right, you will find your way to me.

ELION: Rough night? KYRIE: Why are you asking? You already know. ELION: laughs Mm. Power like yours costs a pretty penny. Though, it’s not a rare gift, being able to force someone to do what you want. I can do that trick too. But mine is free. KYRIE: What are you suggesting? I walk in and threaten the Duke’s life? ELION: No, I’m suggesting I walk in and threaten the Duke’s life. KYRIE: No. And why are you so keen to help me, anyways? You didn’t hesitate at all offering to settle things with the King’s healer. What do you get out of it? ELION: What? Can’t I foster your favor without any ulterior motives? KYRIE: Wasn’t it just a few hours ago you were going on about “due respect”? ELION: Fair point. Let’s say I do want something from you. Are you willing to hear me out? KYRIE: I said I don’t want what you’re offering. ELION: Really? Come now. You know you can’t keep that spell up forever. Your mana will weaken, you’ll slip up, etcetera etcetera, and the Duke will go running his mouth about everything he remembers. KYRIE: If he remembers. He was pretty drunk ELION: So you’re banking on luck, then? KYRIE: sighs What more can Elora do to me? If you haven’t noticed, you’re already here. She can’t lock me up so long as the trials are on. ELION: And afterwards? KYRIE: She… wouldn’t do that. ELION: Are you sure? KYRIE: …No. ELION: Hm. I expect my offer is starting to sound more appealing. KYRIE: I don’t condone the use of violence to get what you want. I never wanted to hurt the Duke. ELION: And he won’t be. So long as he complies. And given that he seems particularly proud of himself, I imagine he’ll want to avoid pain as much as possible. A little threat never hurt anyone. KYRIE: And what do you want in return? I gave you my cooperation. ELION: Reluctantly, yes. But no. What I want has nothing to do with you. Not directly, anyways. KYRIE: So, are you going to tell me or just keep beating around the bush? ELION: The Witcher. What do you know of her home? KYRIE: Eira? Why do you want to know? ELION: What difference does it make to you? It’s a simple question. KYRIE: Nothing that outlandish can ever be simple. Besides, it’s no secret. She’s School of the Viper— ELION: Not that home. Where was she born? KYRIE: I don’t understand. Eira was born in a village in the far north. Near Tir Tochair. But she wasn’t raised there. She has no connection to the place, far as I could see. ELION: So it is… How curious. KYRIE: That’s it? That’s all you wanted? ELION: Yes. For now. KYRIE: Why her? ELION: She… reminds me of someone. Someone I once knew, long ago. KYRIE: What? Don’t tell me you have a heart under all that bravado. ELION: A heart? In this profession, hearts are nothing but currency.

TAYUIN: So your visions, they’re still blocked? KYRIE: Yes, unfortunately. Though, I suppose I should be grateful for some internal peace and quiet. TAYUIN: It’s never happened before? KYRIE: The obstruction? No, it’s never happened before. TAYUIN: You’ve… always had visions? KYRIE: Since I was a child. They were fairly innocuous back then. Little more than intrusive thoughts. Often about things that didn’t matter much. Certainly nothing dire. TAYUIN: And you have no control over them? KYRIE: Not entirely. They usually come when they like, and I make of them what I can. But sometimes they can be prompted. Touching something and concentrating hard enough can jolt it into submission. When I was younger, I wish they’d just go way. Now that they’re gone, I feel… oddly incomplete. TAYUIN: They’re a part of you, no matter how much you might wish otherwise… or if they cause more trouble than they’re worth. KYRIE: I shouldn’t complain. Likely my situation is only temporary. You’ve struggled your whole life with your seasonal connections. I imagine that’s far more distressing. TAYUIN: I’m used it. Doesn’t make it any less uncomfortable. But I’ve never known different so… KYRIE: And if it were up to you, which would you choose? Spring or winter? TAYUIN: Winter… of course. KYRIE: Of course. TAYUIN: I just mean… Well, maybe it suits me more… I don’t know. KYRIE: Does it? I’ve never met another Eladrin. TAYUIN: Winter faeries can be quiet, reserved. Though, no less strong or intimidating than Summer Eladrin. They make up the Frostguard. I would have joined them if… If I could. They’re elite soldiers. Intelligent, powerful strategists. People admire them. They respect them. KYRIE: Then, you dislike your spring attachments? TAYUIN: No, I mean… Spring Eladrin have powerful magics all their own. Masters of tricks and illusions. They should be feared, but their charismatic personalities draw people in. Just part of the manipulation. It's a survival tactic, and I understand the importance of it all too well. But then, I’ve suffered at its hands just as much. Not to say winter faeries are perfect. Far from it… They can be cold. Negligent. Sometimes... remorseless. KYRIE: Your mother, the Queen is…? TAYUIN: Winter. Maybe our only similarity, and still, I’m a fraction of a half. TAYUIN: What about you? Your mother? Your real one. KYRIE: I can’t know her. It’s explicitly forbidden. Even if I wanted to, I expect neither of my birth parents would come forward. It wouldn’t exactly be smiled upon in our society. TAYUIN: Were you never curious? KYRIE: It’s just not worth being curious about. TAYUIN: I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have pushed. It’s not my culture. KYRIE: Don’t worry about it. I’m sure we’ve both got a fair bit of judgement. Your world seems strange to me, too. KYRIE: I think winter does suit you more. The real you. Though, the spring in you isn’t all bad, either. Of course, if you were to lose either connection, perhaps you’d become something neither of us recognize. So, I’m glad you’re both. TAYUIN: Glad? KYRIE: They’re called silver linings, Tay. You should try them. TAYUIN: I know what—! KYRIE: Shh, little winter faerie. Your spring is showing.

KYRIE: If you’re going to follow me around all the time, can we at least let it be understood that you’ll give me some space in personal conversations? ELION: My dear little lord, you need only ask. Why, I’m not like you, you know, I can’t read minds! KYRIE: Right. Then consider this me asking kindly for all future scenarios. Unless you’d prefer I just tell you to fuck off. That does seem to work well, after all. ELION: I’ll always be subservient to a beautiful woman with a bad attitude. KYRIE: Eira’d probably kill you if she heard you say that. ELION: laughs I’d let her try.

ELION: You know, Moon Pet, I didn’t mention it before, but Lord Hayashi seemed oddly surprised to hear of those books he supposedly asked to borrow. Almost as if, he hadn’t. KYRIE: Oh? How peculiar. ELION: laughs If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you were up to something. KYRIE: Up to something? Don’t be silly. Though, now that you mention it, it’s just not proper for someone like you to be dining openly with the Duke and His Highness. I’m afraid you’ll have to wait outside. ELION: You can keep crafting plans to get rid of me, but you realize it only hurts you in the end. After all, no one’s trying to kill me. KYRIE: I’m aware. But if surviving means having no privacy, then I’m not sure it’s a life I want to live. MAID: Your Grace, Your Highness, do come in. The other guests are already waiting in the parlor. LUCIEN: Hello! INDRYR: …Good evening? ASTER: My, my, I didn’t know there would be minors here tonight! I hope this doesn’t mean the booze is off the menu. KYRIE: laughs MAID: My lords, the Duke should be down momentarily. Please make yourselves comfortable. KYRIE: Thank you. And could you see to it that the frightening looking elf outside is given his supper, too? MAID: Of course, Your Grace. ASTER: Well, aren’t you sparkly. LUCIEN: Thank you! KYRIE: Indryr, Aster, this is Prince Lucien. He’s visiting from the kingdom of Kera. LUCIEN: That’s right! Just for the festival! I can’t believe I’m already meeting so many of the Ten! You’re the Bard, aren’t you? ASTER: How’d you guess? Ha! Suppose I have that look about me, don’t I? What about my floral friend here? LUCIEN: Indryr, right? Of Irauygate? They say you’re a talented alchemist! INDRYR: Correct on all accounts. ASTER: Modest too, eh? ELDEWYN: Ah, good evening, everyone! Please excuse my lateness. I hope you’re all most comfortable. I must say, I am absolutely thrilled to host you all tonight. When His Grace offered, I was beside myself with excitement. It’s not every day someone gets a private meeting with the Chosen. I expect I’ll be the talk of the town! KYRIE: Thank you, my lord, for your hospitality. ELDEWYN: Of course, of course! Allow me to introduce myself. Duke Phineos Eldewyn, magistrate, and longtime supporter of the trials. I welcome you all to my most humble abode. KYRIE: Most gracious of you. This is Indryr and Aster, I’m sure you’ve heard much about them, already. ELDEWYN: Yes, yes! And so excited to learn more! Why don’t we all make our way to the dining room? Dinner will be served shortly! KYRIE: whispering Do you have it? INDRYR: Of course, Your Grace. Always. KYRIE: I appreciate you offering. Let’s hope we needn’t have use for it tonight. INDRYR: I couldn’t agree more. But if Plan A fails, then… ASTER: Plan A for Aster, boys! It’s all under control.

EVE: Oh, he’s coming over. KYRIE: He’s very excitable. EVE: Should I brace myself? LUCIEN: Your Grace! I’ve been so looking forward to seeing you! And my lady, it is an honor to meet you! This is only my second festival, well, I was too young to come before, but now mother and father have allowed me to come on my own! I hope to meet all ten of the Chosen, if I’m able! My name is Lucien! EVE: I’m Eve— LUCIEN: Yes, I’ve heard all about you! They say your magic is very strong! Congratulations on winning this past trial, how thrilling! How are you enjoying your time? Has it been very challenging? EVE: Well, I certainly would say so. Perhaps a rocky beginning, but after recent events, things do seem… a bit calmer. LUCIEN: Sometimes I think I’d like to be chosen myself. But then, I haven’t any magic, and I’m not a skilled fighter. I am exceptionally good at haikus, though, would you like to hear one— KYRIE: Maybe later, Your Highness. LUCIEN: Alright! That reminds me, I was a bit surprised to hear you were conducting the ceremony. You see, last Selenehelion Lady Alphanei conducted. She’s very lovely, have you met her? EVE: O-Oh, no, I haven’t— LUCIEN: She’s just wonderful! Exceptionally kind. I’ve just arrived and was hoping that I could see her. I don’t mean to be troublesome, but maybe you could arrange a meeting, Your Grace? KYRIE: I… Um, unfortunately that won’t be… I mean, Al is away at the moment. LUCIEN: Away? Like on a trip? KYRIE: Yes. A trip. She went to visit with the Wise Ones, so I’ve taken over in her absence. LUCIEN: What a pity! Perhaps she’ll return before I leave the city. I hope so! I mean to stay until the end of the trials! I’d love to meet with the other nine, oh… but I expect that’s too much to ask. Maybe just one or two more? KYRIE: Suppose I could introduce you to Åse. She’s just over there. LUCIEN: Ah, yes! The Valkyrie! Exciting! Excuse me, Your Grace, My Lady! EVE: You weren’t kidding. He is… KYRIE: Energetic. EVE: Yes. But he does seem kind, even if a bit innocent. Can’t really fault him for that… Suppose I’ve been very naïve myself, at times. KYRIE: I told you, you see the best in people, and that’s not a bad thing. EVE: Maybe not, but then, I certainly regret giving some people the benefit of the doubt. KYRIE: Prince Lucien is young. He has a lot of growing up to do. But at least for now, maybe it’s alright for him to enjoy a thing in innocence, even if it’s nothing of the sort. EVE: You couldn’t tell him the truth about your sister. KYRIE: Even if I wanted to, if word got out that Alphanei was missing, it would cause a great stir. She’s alive, so, I suppose that’s what really matters. EVE: Alive? How do you know? ÅSE: OF COURSE YOU COME SEE ME! I AM BEST OF CHOSEN! YES IT IS VERY EXCITING! KYRIE: Honestly, they’re a match made in heaven. EVE: You’re not wrong. Though, we shouldn’t let him inflate her ego too much more. If her head gets any bigger, she might just fly away. KYRIE: laughs You’ve changed, you know. EVE: Have I? KYRIE: It’s a good change. You seem more at ease. EVE: Comfortable, perhaps. KYRIE: I’m glad.

KYRIE: Morning, ladies, hope I’m not disturbing. EIRA: Huh? Who’s he? KYRIE: Ah, ha… this is… Elion, please ignore his existence. EVE: Oh… ÅSE: Hmm. You are looking bad mannered and unfortunate! It is reminding me of someone. KYRIE: Can’t imagine who… KYRIE: Anyways, I’ve come to invite the two of you to the Noble Gala tomorrow night, as a reward for winning this past trial. It’ll be a bit stuffy, if I’m honest, but there’s usually good food and decent music. EVE: A gala? Shall we come in formal attire, then? KYRIE: If you would. I’ll be attending myself. It’s only a few hours, but I’ll try to make it worth your while. EVE: I’m sure it’ll be lovely. ÅSE: GALA? This is sounding very boring! KYRIE: Everyone there will be most excited to meet with you. I’m sure they’ll lavish you in favors and flatteries. ÅSE: Flattery, hm? Well… it is important to be recognize for my good accomplishment. Very well! I go! KYRIE: Wonderful. I’ll see you tomorrow evening, then. EIRA: Hey. Wait up. KYRIE: Hm? EIRA: I just… wanted to… EIRA: Do you mind fucking off, very much? ELION: laughs My pleasure. EIRA: Much obliged. KYRIE: Huh… EIRA: What I was trying to say was, that whole curse thing… you’re fine now, yeah? KYRIE: Oh Eira, it’s always so romantic when you try to care. EIRA: I do care, asshole! KYRIE: laughs Sorry. I’m fine. It seems whatever the three of you did was successful. EIRA: Three of… Right. The faerie didn’t tell you anything, did he? KYRIE: Of course not. EIRA: That tracks. KYRIE: I expect you’re not up to playing the part of the snitch? EIRA: Maybe not. I suppose that whole mind magic shit is still out of commission? KYRIE: A temporary problem, I’m sure. EIRA: Right. Well, far be it from me to tell you what the Moon won’t. KYRIE: Understood. Don’t worry, Tay’s just… Well, he’ll come to it in his own time, I guess. Just… tell me, should I be very worried? EIRA: That’s entirely up to him. But… no. When he tells you, if he tells you… don’t go too hard on him. I expect he’s already punishing himself enough.

LUCIEN: What happened back there? KYRIE: No need to worry, Your Highness. ELION: Yes. What did happen back there? KYRIE: It’s late. Let’s get everyone safely back to their rooms. KYRIE: Well, good night dear shadow. It’s been a long day, I— ELION: laughs Oh no. You’re not getting off that easy. KYRIE: You have no right to be in here. ELION: Shut up, Pet. I have every right. Your free will exists entirely on my generosity. Your darling mother gave me free reign over you, and for a moment, I could nearly feign respect. But if you show none to me, I will return in kind. KYRIE: I won’t have to tell you anything and you know it. ELION: You can try and puppet me away all you like. Do you think, in my line of work, I have not been trained to resist such things? Shall we test the strength of your magic, my lord? KYRIE: …No. ELION: Right. I can already see the strain in your eyes. I’m still willing to be your friend, unless you insist we be otherwise. So do tell me, Your Grace. What little schemes have you been plotting? KYRIE: If I’m honest with you… You swear you’ll keep this between us? ELION: It’ll be our little secret.

EDELWYN: Already? What a pity. KYRIE: Suppose I could introduce to some of the others at a later date? EDELWYN: Oh, really? Well, that would be grand! Why don’t you come over to my manor tomorrow night. I’ll prepare something! LUCIEN: Is there going to be another party? EDELWYN: Yes, yes, why don’t you come as well, Your Highness. This will be quite the spectacle. Of course, if it’s all alright, Your Grace? KYRIE: Certainly. Tomorrow evening, then? EDELWYN: Tomorrow EVE: Well, that was easy enough. He seems to do most the talking on his own. Not the most interesting specimen, but perhaps the perfect candidate for your plans. KYRIE: Mm. Let’s hope. EVE: Have you someone in mind already to go? KYRIE: I do. I’ll spare you anymore time with the Duke. As you said, he’s not the most interesting. EVE: That is a great mercy. KYRIE: Speaking of mercies… our night is coming to a close. Things are winding down already, I’m sure we could get away without too many noticing. EVE: And leave Åse? KYRIE: She seems perfectly happy to babysit. Come on, Eve, let me enjoy a night without my shadow. EVE: Oh, very well. EVE: You never told me why he’s really here. KYRIE: I thought it’d be obvious. If it was my choice at all, he wouldn’t be. But the High Priestess cares little about what I want. And maybe she’s right to override my wishes. After all, things aren’t safe. EVE: And he is going to ensure your safety? You’re better off with any of us. KYRIE: A point I’d previously made myself. But, well, I exhausted my goodwill with her. That’s my fault. EVE: That woman wouldn’t know the right thing to do if it smacked her in the face. And you shouldn’t take on any guilt because of it. I won’t believe she’s trying to protect you out of love. KYRIE: No, I know that… EVE: sighs I’m sorry, Kyrie. KYRIE: Don’t be. EVE: You said your sister is alive. Then, you still have family. KYRIE: Yes, maybe… EVE: Maybe? KYRIE: I don’t know. I don’t want to think about that, now. EVE: Alright, then, we won’t. EVE: It’s beautiful out here. KYRIE: Mm. The city has its bright spots. I’ve gotten to see a good few of them this passed month. EVE: You didn’t get out much before? KYRIE: No. Though, maybe that’s my fault, too. Maybe I’ve been too complacent with my cage. I guess nearly dying changes your perspective. Even if I did choose that path. No, especially because of it. EVE: You want something different? KYRIE: I’m starting to. EVE: I’m glad. You shouldn’t lay down and let them dictate your life for you. KYRIE: I never wanted that. I never wanted to be so… indifferent to everything. I suppose I just thought there wasn’t anything I could do. I didn’t see a way out. Maybe I still don’t. But I’ve been asking myself if I might ever find my way to something better, then, what would “something better” really look like? EVE: And have you come up with any answers, yet? KYRIE: A few. Perhaps, most importantly, I realized I don’t want to spend my life alone. EVE: No? KYRIE: I don’t know. Being around the ten of you… those of you who have, for whatever strange reason, chosen to engage with me willingly. It’s different. And it’s nice. I wish I’d had more of it, before. But I know I don’t want to lose it going forward. I suppose, if we all survive this, many of you will move on, return home… Admittedly, it does make me… sad. Maybe more frightening is the idea I might have to learn to do this all over again, but on my own. Without the Moon EVE: I can’t speak for the others, but it’s not strange at all that someone would enjoy your company. I imagine it will be very difficult to go back home after everything. But then… what’s the rush? If you wanted to spend more time with someone, whoever it might be, then maybe you need only ask? KYRIE: Would you stay, Eve? EVE: If you’d like me to. KYRIE: Hm. Then suppose I shouldn’t ask just yet. There’s still chips left to fall. Maybe in the end, you’ll find I’m not the person you thought I was after all. EVE: Kyrie? KYRIE: Not tonight. Maybe some other day I’ll have the courage to tarnish that good image you have of me.

EVE: I didn’t know he would be attending, too? KYRIE: Unfortunately, I’ll be stuck with him for a while. Though, seems we might have a secret weapon… ÅSE: You look very pointy! Tell me, did you ever kill a man? ELION: Many, in fact. ÅSE: Is so?! Big surprise! Then, you have been in many battle? ELION: Battles? Oh, no. I prefer a more subtle approach. ÅSE: Virkelig! Tell me all about! Is very covert? Such methods are not so appealing to me! But then, you do look very shifty. Like little ferret! Ha! Ha! EVE: Well, if she can keep him entertained then— ah, I mean— KYRIE: Oh? Then what? Go on. EVE: I… forget I said anything. KYRIE: My lady, if you wanted to get me alone for the night you might have just said so. EVE: Oh, you are bold! KYRIE: Someone needs to be. If we’re forced to spend an entire evening around uppity dignitaries, we’ll have to find a way to stay sane. EVE: Very well. Then, I’m sure I can easily keep His Grace occupied for a few hours. KYRIE: Now who’s bold?

HIGH PRIESTESS: Solana tells me the curse has been broken. How are you… feeling? KYRIE: I’m fine. What is this about? HIGH PRIESTESS: I told you afterwards we would find some way to proceed and I have done so. This is Elion Maharis. Formerly a member of the Elune Order. As of today, he’s been assigned to your personal guard. KYRIE: You’re hiring an assassin as my bodyguard? The irony is incredible. HIGH PRIESTESS: I hardly think anyone more suitable to protect you than someone with his skillset. KYRIE: I asked you not to do this. HIGH PRIESTESS: You asked for my trust. And then broke it. Again. That’s beside the point now. We must do this, for your safety. Please, Kyrie. Don’t fight me on this. KYRIE: Why do you keep saying “please”? You’ve never asked for my permission before. Why are you acting so strange? HIGH PRIESTESS: I— KYRIE: You know something, don’t you? This is about Al. Is she— HIGH PRIESTESS: Calm down. Alphanei is alive— KYRIE: Alive? How do you know? Have they found her? Where is she? HIGH PRIESTESS: Not here. I received a letter— KYRIE: A letter? From her? Can’t I read it— HIGH PRIESTESS: No! No. You need to focus on your duties, and improving your health. KYRIE: But why— HIGH PRIESTESS: Enough! You may go. Elion. ELION: Yes, My Lady. KYRIE: What an unfortunate change of pace for you. From special operations to babysitter. ELION: I’m more than happy with my position, Your Grace. Given you cooperate, the two of us could get on famously. KYRIE: I suppose that depends entirely on you. I don’t need Elora’s trained dog biting at my heels. ELION: I wouldn’t worry about that. Though, at the end of the day, it’s not really your choice, is it? You moon brats are a special breed of vulnerable. Though, you do have your... talents, don’t you, Your Grace? And even that has its drawbacks. I wonder, what will your darling mother think when she finds out you’ve been toying with the head cleric’s thoughts? KYRIE: How do you know about that? ELION: You’re my charge. It’s my job to know everything about you now. I could… intervene in that problem, if you’d like? Make it “go away”, so to speak. KYRIE: I’m not interested in violent solutions. ELION: Violence? Now, now. I’m a very diplomatic person. Don’t be quick to judge, my lord. KYRIE: And… what would you want in exchange for that service? ELION: I told you. Simply your cooperation. I’d appreciate you not making my job any harder than it need be. We’ll be spending a lot of time together from here on out. It’s best we build some trust, no? KYRIE: I suppose we should. ELION: Excellent. Then, by all means, lead the way, Your Grace. Consider me but a shadow. KYRIE: I doubt I’ll get used to that. ELION: Everything in due time, Dear Moon.
