FFxivWrite2022 Day 28 Prompt Vainglory
@sea-wolf-coast-to-coast
"Well now how is my favorite fresh faced adventurer?" Miounne asked as Senah came up to the counter.
The Lalafell gave her a grin n chuckled, "I do believe I am far from being that anymore Mother Miounne"
"Aye that you are and it's in part why I asked you to come to the guild," the Elezen responded her face sobering, "There's a new adventurer that I'd like you to show a few things to. Boy's got it in his head that the only path for an adventurer is one of glory and none of us here at the guild can convince him otherwise."
Senah nodded, "So you'd like me te show him otherwise I take it and figure my reputation might get him to listen over you all."
The Elezen nodded, "More or less I actually figured I'd he saw you doing some of the more mundane adventurer work he would see that rushing into dangers maw won't get him glory. Only a swift death."
The Lalafell gave a grin, "To the leve counter I go then. N have him meet me 8n the Shroud where I begin the task,"
"Thank you, you know how much I hate to see them throw their lives away."
"As do I Miounne as do I,"
With that she headed over to the leve counter and gathered a handful of the simple leves, a lot of them mainly just dealing with little pest creatures or picking up some herbs for folks.
The Lalafell then headed out toward Blue Badger gate an Miounne called the fool.
Moments later the young Wildwood Lancer came striding up to the counter stating, "So have you finally gotten a job worthy of my talents?"
Miounne gave him a smile, "Not exactly but I would have you follow me into the Shroud."
Huffing in annoyance he agreed overtly not liking that he was escorting her. Miounne led him out of the city and stopped not far from where she was certain one of the leves would be.
Sure enough a little ahead of them was Senah the Lalafel carefully searching some mushrooms in the underbrush."
It took the young man only a few moments to recognize her and he stared asking incredulously, "Is that the Warrior of Light picking mushrooms? Why in Nophica's name would she be doing something so beneath her."
The Lalafell easily hearing him looked up and said, "Cause some o the folks at the Glowery need em n they put out a leve."
"But...but your the Warrior of Light," He sputtered
Walking over to them she nodded, "Aye I am, don't mean I don't still help folks boy. Being an adventurer shouldn't be about slaying massive beasts or looking better that yer fellows. If you think that's all it is yer in the wrong business."
"But you do just that!"
She nodded,"Sometimes Aye, other times no, most times, I do exactly as I am at the moment. Gathering stuff for folks that have a tough time cause o the beasts about. An I do it cause they need help."
"But such things are beneath you a waste of your talents..."
She snorted, "Lad fore I was the Warrior o Light I was a simple farm girl who chose an adventurer's life so my parents could afford my brothers medicine. There's no such thing as 'beneath' yer talents. Folk need help they get help simple as that."
He just stared at her in shock unable to believe that the vaunted champion of Eorzea was doing mundane tasks.
"Take it as you will lad Miounne asked me to show you what adventurings about you don't wanna accept it that's you. Pure n simple it aient all murder n glory n if ye think it is leave, we don't need fools like that in the guild, now as fer me I gotta finish getting these mushrooms then I'm off te deal w a rat infestation fer one o the nearby farms,"
He just watched her go whining, "But I want to be important, I want to be a hero,"
She looked back, "If ye think ye aren't a hero to the folks that ask ye te do these simple things then yer an idiot. Being a hero aient just about having songs sung n yer story told. Some times it's just getting a grateful smile fer helping some one te me that's way better than the songs."
He looked contemplative for a moment clearly he had never thought of it that way.
Miounne gave her a grateful smile and stated, "Shall we return to the guild then and see if there's other work that needs doing?"
"I...don't know...let me have some time to um think.,"
She smiled at him, "Of course, you know where to find me or the leve counter once you've sorted things out,"
With that the Elezen returned to the city leaving the young man to wander behind her completely lost in thought. She hoped he had learned something today the Twelve knew enough adventurers had died for want of glory. Hopefully he would not join their ranks

FFxivWrite2022 Day 22 Prompt Veracity
Tumblr media
Gridania was a buzz with chatter more so than it had been since Senah had come to the city and began her training as an adventurer.  Rains were frequent of late, seemingly more so than normal per some of the city elders.
This lead to fearful whispers that she would be back.  Some said they had already seen glimpses of her.  These had been in places all across Central Shroud.  Some scoffed at the rumors calling them flights of fantasy yet Senah noticed even these folks tended to not venture far from the city lately.
All of it seemed to be hearsay and rumor and yet a lot of the citizens of Gridania refused to travel far from the city in these conditions.  Deciding to find out more, Senah readied the teleportation spell for Quarrymill.  She knew not far from there she would find Jehantel figuring if there was some story or saga surrounding the fears he would know of them.
Once in Quarrymill it seemed a completely different place than the city proper people were going hither and yon about their business seemingly with normal urgency not a hint of the hesitance that seemed to be gripping Gridania and Central Shroud as a whole.  She headed out of the village and toward the last place she recalled the man she was seeking had camped.
It did not take long before she spotted the elder Elezen sitting in front of his usual campfire gently plucking his harp.  Approaching the Lalafell stated cheerfully, “Afternoon Jehantel how have you been?”
The Elezen looked up and gave a warm smile, “Well enough. and welcome again Senah, what brings you here young one?  Surely not more training I do not sense you are ready yet,”
The Lalafell shook her head, “No it's not training, I seek its well, information.  All of Gridania and Central Shroud in general seemed to be terrified of a woman's return.  So much so that few are daring to venture far from any civilization and to be honest it's a bit confusing.”
The elder Elezen nodded a moment then stated, “Let me guess the rains have been unusually frequent of late no?”
The Lalafell nodded and he too nodded before stating, “I see it’s Laidoronnette’s return they are all fearing then.”
Curious, Lalafell asked, “Who is she?”
The Elezen’s eye filled with sorrow and he said, “Was lass, who was she.  Story is that she was once a wainwright's daughter. Pretty young lass doe eyed and gentle with hair of crimson.”
As he spoke his fingers played a somber melody and the Lalefell could swear she could see the girl as he described her.  She sat next to the campfire eager to hear more.
He fell silent and played that melody for a few moments before shifting to a bit more suspenseful song as he continued, “As is said so often of late the Calamity changed that.  Her beloved father was slain during it and she lost herself to grief, screaming and crying until she was hoarse almost every day.  It didn’t take long for the grief to claim her.  Then later, after it had rained for two weeks straight, a strange crimson serpent appeared and many believe it is what's left of the poor girl's spirit twisted and warped into a beast that now preys upon any foolish enough to venture too close.”
Senah nodded in understanding, sharing in the sympathy the old man had for the girl before asking, “Has the serpent ever been put down?”
Jehantel nodded, “Aye many a time brave hunters have laid it low and yet, whenever it rains for an unusually long time it appears again to haunt the Shroud until put to the sword.”
The Lalafell stared into the fire contemplative, “So if the beast is put down again things will go back to normal for Central Shroud and Gridania?”
The Elezen’s hand slipped on the harp and a discordant note rang sourly through the forest. Alarm filled his eyes and he replied, “Aye lass but, this beasty ain’t like most o the ones ye’ve faced.  It is incredibly dangerous and many hunters have met their end to Laidoronnette’s fangs.  Don’t be a fool and seek glory.  I would have thought the Ballad of the Vainglorious Fool taught you that.”
She raised her hands in a placiating motion to the Elezen, “It has grandfather fear not.  I wouldn’t seek out the beast for glory far from it. But if mere rumors of its presence are preventing people from living their lives shouldn’t I as an adventurer seek to put an end to it?”
“I…well, it does tend to be an adventurer’s lot to find themselves in danger for the sake of others or coin if it is their choice.  And I know well the former is what drives you but, this…this beast is dangerous lass and I would hate for you to meet your end to its fangs even if it was for the sake of others.”
She nodded, “I understand and I don’t plan on hunting it on my own.  I’m not a fool. I know full well that it is quite dangerous if you are this worried about it.  Fear not grandfather, I will take all due cautions.  Also recall that I have faced some fearsome foes in my own right in order to protect the realm.  I am not approaching this as a lark. I will have a plan and allies I can count on.”
Some of the worry that etched the elder’s features seemed to ease and he nodded, “Your words do much to assuage my fears lass.  Take care then and I will pray to Althyk that you will be successful and come home safe.”
Getting up the Lalafell gave the Elezen a warm hug stating softly, “And I appreciate that Jhantel I do.  Worry not you will see me again,”
She then stepped back and readied the teleport spell to the Waking Sands knowing full well there amidst the Scions she would find allies she could rely on that would aid her in putting Laidoronnette out her misery once more.

FFXIVWrite2022 Prompt 1 Cross
Tumblr media
Senah looked around the chocobo stable with dismay, the normally neat and tidy place was in complete shambles, nests shredded with straw scattered, various bits of chocobo feed tossed out of their troughs and scattered on the straw-lined packed earthen floor.  Said floor having divots dug out of it deep trenches as well dug by overt small chocobo claws.
Looking up at the stable hand the Dunesfolk stated, “I see why ye called me and I have te say I’m sorry.”
Looking down at the Lalafell the Elezen’s eyes widened in alarm, “You…you don’t need to apologize, miss, I….I should apologize.  Overtly something is wrong with the stable since your bird reacted in such a way.  I would never dream of blaming a ward of House Fortemps….”
Senah shook her head, “Naw it ain't nothin wrong with the stable he's just used te one thats more open.”  Frowning deeper she called, “Sage, get yer green feathered arse over here now!”
From around one of the support pillars came a streak of green to slide to a halt in front of the Lalafell who gave him a stern look.  He fluffed his head crest and began chirping sweetly and she just shook her head stating, “Don’t”
The bird then hung his head and let out a kweh that sounded suspiciously like an apology. Senah then began rolling up her sleeves and looked back up at the elezen stating, “Well where are yer tools, lemme at least help straighten up the mess this feathered menace made.”
The Elezen shook his head stammering, “I…I could never ask such a distinguished individual such as your good self to demean herself in such….”
Senah snorted, “Distinguished, heh don't make me laugh.  I’m a farm girl through and through and ye ain’t asking anything.  I’m choosing te fix the mess my bird made and you.” she added pointing at the chocobo, “Are gonna lend a beak least ye can do te help the rest o these birds, look at em their upset and its yer fault featherbrain.”
Obediently the chocobo did as she bade looking at the other chocobo in the stable who were all making small distressed noises and shuffling at the mess surrounding them.  As he took it all in he gave an apologetic wark and then stepped up and began grabbing clumps of the scattered straw doing his best to pile it neatly.
The Elezen just looked on in amazement for a moment then surrendered to the expectant gaze of the Lalafell and grabbed some of the tools and handed them to her.  Together the three of them fixed the mess that was the stables and in a few hours the birds were chirping contentedly and fluffing their feathers in relief.
Once everything was straighted up and the tools put away the Elezen commented, “You really were raised on a farm weren’t you?”
Giving him a big grin the Lalafell nodded, “Aye, we for the most part had sheep fer animals but, we did have one ornery bird that ignored everybody but me fer some reason.  Thats how I knew exactly what had caused all o this.  This un,”  she pointed at the chocobo who was standing next to her his head drooped low. “Tends te be rambunctious and not inclined te listen te anybody but me.  So not that much different from the old bird.  I’m pretty sure they’re related in some way.”
She then grabbed her bird by the beak and made him look her in the eye, “Now you listen here Sage, no more o this, I get it ye want te run and have fun like ye did back in Mor Dona but this ain't the same and these birds ain’t used te yer antics.  So please fer their sake and the sake o the poor hands here be a good bird, please,”
As she let go he bobbed his head and Kwehed in agreeance then looked up at the Elezen and chirped an apology.  After that he made his way to the stall he’d been given and obediently settled down.
“There ya go he should be good as gold now, again sorry fer the trouble hes used te being able te run and play a lot more than he can here in this set up.  I understand why its this way if it weren't the birds would freeze its just gonna take him a bit te get used to it is all.”
“I…I am just relieved it was not something we had done wrong and offended him.  With you being, well…”
She then gave him a stern look stating, “Look I know ye put a lot o stock in these noble houses but lemme make one thing clear.  I ain't one o them, I’m just a farm girl from the Shroud who's gotten tangled up in far more than she ever intended to.  Don't think ye gotta treat me any different than anybody else, please.”
He gave a nod stating, “I shall try miss, I am sorry if I have offended you.” he replied
She shook her head, “Naw just sick o folks thinking I gotta be treated like something special, I ain’t.  I became an adventurer te help me parents get some medicine fer me brother an then I got caught up in all this Warrior of Light nonsense.  I don't need accolades or praise I’m just doin what needs doin.”
He nodded stating, “I will try to keep that in mind, miss and pass it along to others here.  Those that work here in the stables will treat you as you would like to be treated.  I give you my word, have a good evening.”
She smiled at him and then made her way out of the stables and up to the pillars to get a bath and some rest.

Journey’s Start

FFxivWrite2022 Day 18 Prompt : Free Write
Tumblr media
Senah jerked awake for the third night in a row clammy from sweat as the strange dream left her.  The Lalafell’s heart was hammering as she sat up and stared out her window into the starry sky broken up by the branches of the trees.
As she sat there the quiet voice of her mother reached her ears.  “Its getting to be too much Ardert.  I know he needs it but the medicine is so expensive.  We can barely afford it, much less getting it and keeping the farm up.”
“I know,” Ardert stated the frustration evident in his voice, “But what can we do Jora let the poor boy spend his days coughing to a point o bein unable to move?”
“No…,” she replied, sounding guilty that she had even brought it up.
“We’ll manage luv somehow we always do.  Maybe we sell some o the sheep te them Limsan folks make less work overall.  I know little Senah’s tryin te fill in fer her brother, but let's face it farm works hard on a Lalafell.”
Senah grimaced, her father hit hard on the truth of it.  She was doing her best to fill in the gap her brother Burchard had left in the farm.  Two falls past the boy had come down with the Creeping Death.  Only being half Hyur, he survived it better than some did.  But it permanently scarred his lungs and made him prone to coughing fits that literally made him bedridden most of the time without the medicine.
Medicine that was made in Frondale’s Phonistery in Ul’Dah and had to be imported into Gridania proper where one of the family would have to make the three day trip to the city to buy it and another three to bring it back to the farm.  Medicine that only lasted a month.
All in all it was putting a strain on the farm every time it needed to be gotten but none of the family would allow Burchard to go without it.  He suffered so much without its help and they all loved him too dearly to let that happen.
There's gotta be something that can be done, Senah thought to herself as she sat there in bed
Then it hit her, she struggled with farm work but she was skilled enough with a bow.  Time and again she had brought her family food via a quick clean shot.  The last time it had been her who had gone to Gridania to get her brother's medicine.  While there she had stopped in the Carline Canopy to see Mother Miounne speaking with a young Miqo’te who had just arrived and was registering as an adventurer.
Adventurers get paid te do all sorts o odd jobs round Gridania, the Shroud and pretty much anywhere folks are lookin fer help she said to herself.
Making up her mind she got up and made her way out to the kitchen where her mother and father had been quietly talking.  Her mother turned and said softly, “Sorry Senah we didn’t mean to wake you.”
The Dunesfolk shook her head, “Ye didn’t wake me ma but I did hear ye and dad talking.”
Both the Elezen and his Hyuran wife looked sheepish and started to open their mouths to speak when she raised her hand to stop them.
“I ain’t upset far from it actually.  I getcha an I know how hard its been and how technically useless I am on the farm.  The tools are too big fer me and I can’t really wrangle the herd.  Bout the only thing I can do is get ol Basil te listen and even then he’s just a stubborn bird that don’t wanna do much.” she stated, “An it got me thinkin, I’m a fair hand with a bow an Gridania’s always looking fer ‘venturers te help out.  So I think I should head te the city proper and join the guild…”
Worry filled her father’s eyes and the Elezen blurted, “Senah…adventuring is dangerous.  Its not just simple chores, sometimes it's killing beasts or even Ixal…”
Senah nodded, “I know it ain't a skip through flowers, I know there's trouble abound ‘specially now even so far after the Calamity but, there is coin te be had.  Coin that could help the farm out and I ain't afraid.  I also ain't plannin on rushing out till I got proper knowledge o things.  And Gridania has the Archers Guild which could teach me how te hone my bow skills so I could defend myself.”
“Senah…” her mother began
“Look I get it, yer worried and rightly so.  But I ain't gonna just run off and try and gain glory and the like.  I’ll do the small jobs, the ones some scoff at cause they think it beneath em.  I go slow and careful.  Ye both and my brothers have always treated me like family and I wanna do my part te help.”
Her father gave a bemused smirk, “There is no talking you outta this is there?”
The Dunesfolk shook her head, “Nope, it ain't just cause o concern for the family I’m doing this.” she paused a moment her eyes became contemplative before she continued, “It’s something I need to do, dunno why, but it is.”
Her father nodded her mother made a sound of protest but he just held up a hand to her before looking his diminutive daughter in the eye stating, “When mornin starts run over te Asta’s farm and ask if she’s got a moment te talk.  She spent years wanderin as an adventurer fore she settled down te farm.  Find out what yer signing up for if it’s whatcha wanna do lass.”
Senah nodded then bid both of them good night knowing full well that just because she was supposed to go over there tomorrow didn't mean she didn't still have to do the chores in the morning.
Her heart was pounding again this time with excitement.  She had been truthful that she wasn't going to just rush into things but that didn't mean that the prospect of doing something other than farm work all day long wasnt an exciting thought.  And as she had told both of them this felt right, like it was something she was meant to do.  She didn’t know how or why but it did.
