Even more wips! One prompt I loved but couldn't decide on (because there are a lot paintings based on that) was 'La Belle Dame Sans Merci'. I started the oil painting first, which I'll probably finish, but as I did it I thought 'damn, I should have used watercolours' so I did that too.

Third year presentation notes
First year
slide 2-
At the beginning of the course I was very stuck in my ways. I was very much into realism at the time and was more about making my work look ascetically pleasing rather than focusing solely on the concept. I had always enjoyed painting and drawing people and knew that was going to continue within my work throughout University. I must admit, I found it difficult adjusting to the dynamic of the course in first year. Towards the end of second term I discovered more of a grounded theme for my practice. This was looking at the ways in which technology has altered the way we perceive ourselves to how we act in real life. By this I mean, social media applications such as Facebook and Instagram which require you to upload, share and like posts. I began to distort my portraits by pixalating areas of the face, specifically the eyes as this would give the viewer no indication to who it was they were viewing in the painting. This technique of painting was utilised by portrait artist Jen Mann, who inspired me. ( include in slide)

Over the summer holidays before I began second year I was experimenting with a scanner and scanned my face. My subject matter was still based around the theme of identity. This time, rather than pixelating the face manually, I was using technology to distort and deconstruct the face. I began to start off in second year painting from the scanned images of my face.
Within this term I was encouraged by my tutor Craig to experiment with oil painting. Forever I had always used acrylic paint to create work with and felt like I had reached my peak with that medium. The first few paintings I did of that first term were with acrylics and it did take me a while to ease my way into using oils. I created a lot of paintings that were based around the scanned face that could have been symbolic for the multiple personas a person may have.
On the other hand, I didn't want my paintings to become too exact to the scan because there would be no point in copying a photograph. I felt like I wouldn't gain anything from it. Instead, the process of painting from a pre made image into a man made image was something I wanted to illustrate within my painting. For instance within this painting ( painting of face with blue background) I left the grid slightly in the background to show my progression of the painting as well as allowing paint marks to form naturally on their own.

Two Fat Ladies Gallery
In second term me and Lauren Turrel decided to combine our works together in an exhibition held at Two Fat Ladies Gallery. The exhibition was titled “Misrepresentation of Reality”. We thought our works alined together well as they both focused on the identity and the way saturated images from the media can give off a false sense of reality. Both of our works illustrated a distorted perception of identity using oil paints. Due to the size of the gallery space, me and Lauren exhibited 2-3 pieces each as we didn't want to cramp the walls with too many paintings as we thought this would affect the breathing space of the works.
This image is taken from our private view where most of our close family and friends came to visit. If I was to do the exhibition again I think I would have made more of an effort to promote the exhibition around Norwich. Also the gallery space didn't really have a sign outside to inform the public that it was a gallery or even open so I think that had an impact on how many people viewed it. However, I did manage to sell a painting which I was very happy with!

Throughout second year I was approached by Moosey Art Gallery to take part in an exhibition in the following summer that year of 2016 titled “Art In My Mouth 3”. This encouraged myself to think about professional practice more. So I decided to create my own website and business cards in preparation for the exhibition. ( SHOW SLIDE OF WEBSITE AND BUSINESS CARDS). The exhibition had about 15 artists and I was fortunate to be the only student exhibiting with artist from London and some even from Japan. The piece that I exhibited was a portrait of my friend Charlie. I titled it “Lad Guy” because before Charlie came to university people thought he was a typical ‘lad’ and age him the nickname. It shows how online can cause misconceptions of identity due to the nature of images being uploaded and shared on ones profile. (show image of lad guy painting).
Third year
Slide 7 -
As I got into third year I wanted to make my dissertation about portraiture and painting the way technology has saturated the self overtime. I decided to title my essay on The Role of Portraiture Painting in a World of Continual Technological Advancement and its Affect on Identity. I looked into books such as Society of the Spectacle by Guy Debord and The Painting of Modern Life by Rugoff. I felt like I had a strong connection between my practice and my extended essay.
Because the dissertation played a large part in the first term of third year I wanted to make sure I was in a position where I had researched enough so I could still do as much practical as I did the last year. I began to do some sketches in watercolour as it helped form an idea and colour palette for future paintings. I was really into bright almost neon like colours, so from one of my scans I painted this which I titled “Charn 001 jpg” I felt  like the name really linked to the concept of editing and altering the self online using different forms of technology. This painting was made using oils paints on mdf board. However, I have decided in this second term I want to start stretching my own canvases to then paint on as I prefer the finish on canvas.

Look Again exhibition
So within my studio space Katie Thaine, Ryan Walker, Nikita Payne, Marlene Lees and myself decided to curate our own pop up exhibition in our studio space! As a group we decided to exhibit 1 piece of work each. This was to give enough wall space for each art work to show its significance and also to give enough room for the audience to walk around. Our title for our pop up exhibition was ‘Look Again’. Th title was broad enough to cover the fact that our works focus on image within society and how technology enhances that.  The poster was made up on close ups of our paintings to create an abstract approach and not give too my information away to the viewer.
We thought it would be good to have my painting on the wall first as you come into the room.  This was to grab the audiences attention to face as the exhibit starts off as human and slowly distorts. Then you can see Katie’s painting which is taken from Facebook of a persons cover photo, then you more around the room and Nikita’s painting is fairly abstract but it from an image off an iPhone screen background which is when the exhibition starts to become more abstract. Behind is Ryan’s glitch film projection onto the wall then subtly ends with Marlene’s floor piece of a gym mat and some paper weights. Gradually the exhibition lures the audience through distortions of reality.
Slide 9
In this second term I have begun to edit some of my images on Photoshop using a liquified effect which really distorts the face but still maintain control of where you want to distort it. I am hoping to be editing a lot more this term in order to find the right images that I am passionate about to create work from. I feel like I have experimented a lot last term so this term is my chance to make work that can be possibly used for my degree show. I aim to still paint using oils and a mixture of stand oil and dan mar varnish to create a more vidid colour to my paintings. I think looking at my work I want to start incorporating more glitch within my paintings as well as allowing the paint to take control too. So there will be a mixture of myself controlling the medium along with  the medium controlling the painting. I think this will push my painting to the next step and to also make it more contemporary.
Slide 10-
Joss edit which I will do some practices of and eventually paint from it once I’ve stretched my canvases. I love the colours of this edit as obviously edited but in a soft and surreal way.
