In regards to the gun violence line. At least in the circles I'm in the discomfort is part of the experience. It's draws this sort of sickish dread, the kind that crawls up your throat in a silent scream. And before it has a chance to escape, you've moved on. And the discomfort is gone. It's there still, clawing at the edges until they're frayed and your not sure what your feeling because your thrown right back in to it, into that uncomfortable broadcast of tragedy. I don't know too well about thw news broadcasts you have about gun violence but online it's kinda sickeningly romantic? The way it's done, and in media gun violence (particularly amongst a teenage audeince) and this weird romantic image are kinda glued together. There's even a game someone made once where you collect hearts in a school for a girl and at the end it's revealed you've been shooting Other stufents the whole time.
Since its release I've always read that song to be a kind of darker interpretation of it. "You gotta show me how to push if you don't want a shove, the words of a young man already damned"
Already infected with that idea, that he'll be revered or loved, that this somehow solves his issue, the power and fame it gives. Its in my experince uncomfortable for everyone I've shown the lyrics to because they realise they've been jamming to someone's incel manifesto. I think it has a unique affect on Americans for sure but I think it has a similar if not slightly less visceral effect on Europeans and bits.
Yeah, I think you’re right because of the rhetoric of the song, sort of, borrowing that romanticism that you describe. Unfortunately, the media reporting on it isn’t that much better over here. I think youth and whiteness have a lot to do with it, too. Especially for us in the US when you juxtapose the all too common news of mass shootings with the all too common news of violence against black people. It does feel like those mass shooters are given a complex narrative it’s sometimes infuriating, especially if they’re young like in some cases of school shootings.
And I think what you say is true AND the song is so good at doing it. Like, it spends time building that discomfort then throws in a ONE LINE answer “you gotta show me how to push if you don’t wanna shove.” Then moves on. It’s like whoaaa I’m disoriented hahaha. Brilliant writing on the band’s part. Just…. An emotional rollercoaster hahaha.
