I mean she was one of the top 10 most famous people in the world when they met. What did he think, he was going to become as sucessful as her? I think problems really escalated when he got leading roles in CWFs and TSAN and then got panned in both movies. At the same time, Taylor's career was shooting upward and he couldn't handle it. Still think about how little promo Taylor did for Midnights and how she didn't post about her streaming records or first week sales. Makes me just wonder about alot of things, that's all I'm saying.

This is how I see it.

She didn’t need Calvin to boost her career. She needed him to help her narrative for her next album, which was reputation. Reputation was always supposed to be about Calvin/Tom.

Just look at the “flashback when you met me” line. The “lies were white, the ties were black”—a black tie affair, which the Met Gala is. Public narrative wise—those lines would’ve fit Tom Hiddleston who we saw her interacting with at the Met Gala had that plan worked out. There are no pictures or mentions of she and Toe ever interacting that night. Just mentions created by Swifties, who gave them an anniversary date. Just like they gave them a story about William Bowery’s origins, which Toe rehearsed and talked about conveniently during his CWF promo run, but hadn’t acknowledged prior.

When she went through the Kimye situation, she had to pivot and pivot hard. Because Taylor wasn’t seen publicly, she couldn’t plant the seeds for the Easter eggs in her new songs before the album came out. So in comes Toe, somebody that no one had even heard or known of, because again, she wasn’t publicly seen for over a year. This helped her to create this new “secret relationship” narrative for the album. Because to the public, her past albums have always been built around *a* “relationship” that had taken place. Jake & red. Harry and 1989, for example.

Calvin literally wrote an entire thread on Twitter about how he “grew a big ol beard” to win a Grammy and all he got was a song (that she wrote under a pseudonym at the time) and a nomination.

I'm just not sure that view of Joe and fame fit the facts. He was talking dismissively about fame and celebrity in the usual British actor way pre pandemic. He also mentioned somewhere about preferring to do smaller roles in films he finds interesting than bigger roles in films that weren't as interesting. I'm not sure that is what a person chasing fame would be doing?

Also was his career de-railed with the pandemic? I believe I recall him saying something about it being hard to deal with, as it was for a lot of people who were unable to work and found themselves unsure about the future. But I don't think the pandemic would have been seen as anything other than a pause to his career at the time. Maybe just a sense of time being wasted (since most actors do have a shelf life). Now if his views on fame changed post CWF and SaN, then I would say you have a fair point. But they were clearly having their issues long before those two things flopped.

Hello! I mean - not to be that person - but if he didn’t care for fame at all, or if he actively disliked it as it seems now, why did he look to become a tv & cinema actor in the first place? And the thing is, don’t get me wrong, I 100% believe that him witnessing what Taylor went through in 2016 and following years genuinely influenced his view of fame and celebrity, but I don’t think back when he started he had a problem with it.

He surely didn’t have a problem with Taylor’s celebrity at the time, considering he was happily taking her to his events up until 2020 basically. So something switched with the pandemic, or around that time. And I do think that Covid negatively impacted his career considering that before lockdown hit, he was booked to do several projects that then either didn’t happen (like the Luca guadagnino film, and I think there was another one as well?) or he had to pull out from bc of scheduling issues that the pandemic had created (Emily).

Lastly, I do think their issues started at some point in mid 2021, which is around the time CWF flopped, and definitely got worse after that. Anyway, as I said yesterday, I don’t think fame was the only issue they had ofc, but I do think Taylor’s success somehow became a problem and his reaction to it was one of the things that eventually led them to the breakup.

See, this is also why no one believes he is WB and that he wrote those songs. They (Taylor/Toe) know people know he didn’t work on those albums. Remember the radio interview he did during CWF when the host kinda grilled him about it and he got all sassy with her? I think she said something about people working hard to earn Grammys. She must’ve struck a nerve because he was like “well *I* did”.

I even noticed now when you see the CWF promo on Twitter or IG, it mainly focuses on Sasha and Allison’s characters. He’s not a leading man, he has no sex appeal…he just photographs decently on occasion.

Not to be mean or rude, but I’m starting feel like Taylor’s so obsessed with staying relevant as she gets older that she doesn’t even realize how embarrassing this all looks. I mean…she’s literally breaking records daily. A shoo-in for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when her opportunity comes about. Has inspired many artists to write their own songs and stressed the importance of them owning their masters from the beginning of their careers. Relevance doesn’t always have to be about the songs. It can be in terms of the impact you’ve made. Ashanti, who is well established herself has even said Taylor’s fight for her masters inspired her to go after hers. Anita Baker has spoken of Taylor’s influence on her masters fight (she now OWNS her work). Your relevance can be felt in your impact and your impact will be reflected in your legacy.

She even admitted she will inconvenience herself to prove a point and that speaks volumes. Because she’s literally doing that right now. Inconveniencing herself to prove a point that she can “keep a man” for longer than 3 months. Inconveniencing herself to push a false narrative to sell albums when she doesn’t even need to do that. That’s society’s fault though. Because as we can see, society doesn’t think LGBTQIA+ people (alleged or open) can express or have feelings and emotions like *they* do.

What’s sad is that instead of embracing who she is, she willingly “inconveniences herself to prove a point”, but it comes off more as her trying to convince herself of something by possibly denying her (alleged) truth.

Going through what she went through (career wise) in 2016 and surviving it was so empowering to other women because they too have encountered those same obstacles in the workplace—having men do anything to undermine or discredit their hard work. Their self-made success, but no. All of a sudden, everything is being credited to a man who did nothing, but reaps benefits and enjoys the fruits of YOUR labor.

As much as some people think it’s “cute” that Toe has “saved” her and other bs…it’s really not. It’s frustrating. In the process of “inconveniencing herself to prove a point”, she has (unintentionally) given into misogynistic mindset that women can’t be successful by their own doing unless a man plays a part in that success.

And I don’t really think that’s what you meant when you said you’d become a Mirrorball, Taylor. Why would you need to change everything about yourself to impress a blonde-haired, blue-eyed, white male (terrible) unknown actor?

Eh I think he'll sit most of the press out and the three women will handle it. The thing is like the more you play up his ~mystery~ the sexier Nick is right? You can push Alison HARD and also have Sasha and Jemima do a bunch of press and he can do a couple of interviews and even ones where he's with Alison and/or Jem which would reduce the awkward questions.

I think of possible projects to do press with him CWF is really not the worst which I why they also went with him I think.
