Nike suspends ties with NBA star Kyrie Irving: ‘We condemn any form of antisemitism’

Apparel giant announces it will no longer release the Brooklyn Nets player’s new signature shoe, as team’s general manager says 5-game suspension was ‘best course of action’

NEW YORK — Nike suspended its relationship with Kyrie Irving on Friday amid the antisemitism firestorm sparked by the Brooklyn Nets star.

The move by the apparel giant comes a day after the Nets suspended Irving for at least five games citing Irving’s “failure to disavow antisemitism” either on social media or in meetings with reporters.

Hours after the suspension was issued, Irving did offer an apology on Instagram, but Nike distanced itself from him on Friday anyway, saying it would not launch the Kyrie 8 shoe that was expected to become available this month.

“At Nike, we believe there is no place for hate speech and we condemn any form of antisemitism,” the company said in a statement.

“To that end we’ve made the decision to suspend our relationship with Kyrie Irving effective immediately and will no longer launch the Kyrie 8.

Kyrie Irving no volverá a vestir con la marca Nike. Así lo ha anunciado la marca deportiva, que rompe definitivamente el contrato que tenía con el jugador de los Brooklyn Nets. Shams Charania, reconocido periodista de The Athletic, anunció en sus redes que, un mes después de que la empresa anunciara su suspensión, ambas partes no se volverán a juntar.

El base, campeón de la NBA en 2016 en Cleveland junto a LeBron, tenía pensado lanzar las Kyrie 8 en las próximas semanas, pero ahora será un “agente libre de las zapatillas”, como comentó Charania. La marca, que declaró por medio de un comunicado el pasado 5 de noviembre que quedaba suspendido de manera temporal, ha decidido no contar con él debido a su relación con discurso antisemitas en las últimas semanas.
