Oliver Fog - The Representation of Trade Unions Post-War

When most people talk about Oliver Fog, it’s never through an analytical lens. He is mostly used for the sake of shipping and sibling headcanons. And if his backstory is ever addressed, it’s normally taken wrong. Oliver isn’t a character who just hates work. In fact it could be argued that he is a microcosm of trade union representatives in his time period.

First I must discuss the importance of trade unions on Oliver’s character especially of 1953. I say 1953 because Oliver mentions that he has not worked overtime for 211 days in his anecdote. Trade unions at the time were much more powerful than they were today, and had much heavy tight links to the UK Labour Party, which was undoubtably much more left wing than it is today. The leader of Labour at the time was Clement Attlee who, while no longer Prime Minister, was one of the most influential socialists in UK history and helped to set up the NHS. I bring this up due to Attlee’s influence on the country and left wing politics as a whole, and as a civil servant, Oliver would have been aware of him.

Let’s now take a look at Arsenal. Oliver says he was a fan of them as a child since they were a popular team, but for that we must look at Arsenal’s history to find out how old Oliver would have been. Seeing how Oliver turns 15 in 1952, he would have been born in 1937, just before the outbreak of WW2. Highbury Stadium was build in 1939 and the Football League was suspended for the duration of the wartime period, meaning that it was impossible for Oliver to have seen them at a young age. The earliest he could have seen the team by walking out on his own was at the age of 10. At this point in his life, Oliver would have lived through the death, devastation and brutality of a wartime period and how it left Britain bankrupt.

Arsenal’s red colour palette is also telling due to it being his favourite team - red is a colour that politically means left wing ideologies, and in the UK is a reference to the Labour Party, as well as its anthem The Red Flag, a socialist song about the labour movement. It’s possible that the fact Oliver’s favourite team being Arsenal was picked especially for this comparison, but at the same time it might just be me leaning in too far.

Oliver has a persistent want of an eight hour work day in reference to the social movement prevalent after the Industrial Revolution, where working hours were long and children were exploited for labour. While the UK to this day doesn’t have an eight hour limit to the work day, there have been major strides, and it was first accomplished in 1889 by the founders of the modern day GMB union. The fact Oliver specifically becomes part of this social movement is telling of his feelings about rights. There’s also his hatred of overtime, which adds onto this.

Oliver’s rant to A Knight could also be alternatively read as a rant on a predatory structure or system.

I’m not even supposed to be here! I’m just a boy, but because of your dreamed-up notions of purpose and responsibility, I was forced to become a Fogwalker. I never wanted to walk amongst the fog. I’m terrified of it… I just want to… I just want to stay alive.

Oliver is without hope at the beginning of his anecdote, lost in not knowing why he so readily took up the position of the Fogwalker. By the end of it he’s become aware of his true beliefs.

The Fogwalker is one who steps into the fog and brings light to others. Fundamentally, it’s a joke like any other, mundane as tightening screws or scooping manure. But that’s not all it is. My father once walked through the fog to bring me hope. On that day, he did the same. “This is my responsibility, and it is our responsibility.” […] On that day in 1952, he also brought hope to the people of London. The hope of survival.

Personally there are a few hints that Oliver falls along left wing ideology such as socialism. This could be especially true of his beliefs in social activism of his attitudes towards labour rights. Let’s take a look at his new garment.

Version 1.8’s location is Russia, presumably in the 1910s before the Russian Revolution that would later set up the groundworks for the Soviet Union, so already the fact the garment comes out in this version specifically is telling. This garment set as a whole is called ‘Constructivism in Concept’. Constructivism is a theory where people acquire knowledge through experience and conversations, not through just seeing things, which could be reflective of Oliver’s anecdote. The garment itself is ‘See You At The Workers Club’. Workers’ clubs were something set up in the USSR and was a place for workers and their families to relax and also a place for propaganda. It was also sponsored by trade unions. I had to use Google Translate for the writing on the sheet metal, and the text reads, roughly, “let’s protect the eight hour working day”.

It’s easy to interpret Oliver as a microcosm through what he does and what he says. As a whole, he is a complex individual, a traumatised overworked teenager.

I tend to headcanon NHS as being 1 year older than the rest depending on my mood - in this case that would make him Da-ge and he will lord it over the other two forever.

LWJ is not calling him Da-ge. In fact he goes out of his way to avoid ever having to address NHS in any context.

LWJ & JZXuan are both pining at the end of sunshot so DA-GE!NHS WILL SAVE THE DAY!

By which I mean we will be having Twelfth Night and Midsummer's Night Dream levels of love triangles and misunderstandings

NMJ & JGY end up patching things up because between all of the messes to clean up and all of the alcohol consumed, they just understand each other now.

There's something I want to address and it's the claim that SS and NH are lacking or bad because Kishimoto can't write romance or can't write female characters. While I definitely agree that he doesn't write his female characters nowhere near as interesting or with the same depth as his male characters, Sakura and Hinata's characters being particularly bad and SS/NH being bad has nothing to do with his inability to write heterosexual romance. We have seen him write some.

Dan and Tsunade had a romantic relationship, and we see them bond due to similar values and similar pain. They can relate and understand each other. They have things in common. They speak like equals. Now, I will not add all of their pages together because it will make the post too long, but isn’t it sad that in three pages we have a better connection, better understanding and more believable romance between a minor character and a side character, than we have between two main characters that had 700 chapters worth of time to have a believable romantic relationship and connection? I don’t even need to add all the pages where they are touchy and happy around each other or when Dan calls Tsunade his dream and kisses her forehead.

Now compare that to Sasuke and Sakura. To quote @sneezemonster15 "We are yet to see a profound, honest and emotionally touching interaction or conversation between Sasuke and Sakura". To add to that, we have yet to see Sakura say anything profound about Sasuke's character, goals or values. All we ever see her do is cry and scream how much she loves him and how much it pains her. Sasuke doesn't even treat her as an equal enough to face her whenever she pours out her feelings, like he does with Naruto. She doesn’t know anything about him because he never speaks to her. She has the nerve to compare him leaving her to the massacre of his family in terms of tragedy and loneliness, despite the fact she has a family, because she lacks empathy and understanding towards him.

Whenever she confesses, she looks angry, and her reasonings are irrational. She always tries to talk about herself in order to sway him. They never communicate, they never have deep conversations. They can’t relate to each other because Sakura doesn’t value her family and family is Sasuke’s character motivation and the most important thing to him. When Sasuke says there is no reason for him to love Sakura and no reason for her to love him, he’s right. What would Sasuke love about Sakura? He doesn’t even know her, and her values and behavior are something that irritates him. Sakura doesn’t know Sasuke either. She’s just addicted to him.

As for NH, Kishi was able to make a female character save her love interest without looking pathetic or coming off as selfish. And that character is Temari.

Again I won’t post all the images but Temari comes to save Shikamaru because Tsunade send back up, and Shikamaru starts with his usual “a man can’t have a woman defend him” nonsense and Temari is like, telling him not to underrestimate her and she proves him wrong too. She does manage to save him. Temari is a great kunoichi and always shown as one.

Now compare this to Hinata. First of all as I pointed out in one of my essays Kishimoto build up this moment by having multiple characters say no one should join the fight between Naruto and Pain because they would only make things harder for Naruto and get in his way. Hinata is also told about this. But, as she says, her motivation to join the fight is selfish. She wants to confess her feelings. She also has no strategy, she just barges in and is immediately one-paneled by Pain and needs to be saved. So not only did Kishimoto show Hinata as an incompetent kunoichi, he also showed her as selfish and only thinking about her own feelings. This is completely different from how he portrayed Temari.

My point is, Kishi can write female characters as not pathetic, even if he doesn’t give them the same attention as his male characters. He can also make them have reasonable interest in a male character. He can write them as not selfish. He can write the romantic interaction as tasteful. But he never did this for SS or NH because he never intended them to be good romances.

Something something the Wen were on their way to toy with the other sect heirs but NMJ protective and righteous as he decides that it's his duty to bear it all!

Now he has to go through the humiliation from every Wen! They toy with him and NMJ is tough but what kind of person wouldn't break in that situation? (JGY probably)

How will he ever recover from that humiliation? Most importantly, how will he ever recover?

This kinda sets a precedent for NHS to take over much earlier and maybe NMJ doesn't end up as murderous

If he wasn't chosen by the Wen to bear it alone (which is technically a punishment on the other leaders as well because of the guilt and more humiliation for nmj cause he didn't even get to heroicly sacrifice himself), if Nmj decided to tank it, he'll tank it. Meaning he would not let it break him, he'd be humiliated but his best course of action after the walls are painted with Wen's blood, would be to return to how he was, standing proud and fearless, barking commands, training his men, keeping the realm good. Others would worry about him and he often gets lost in thought or his dreams lead him to phantom hands but he would never freeze from a touch (unless it's lxc's touch, there he freezes and burns at the same time because that man in nmj's eyes is every thing that is good and beautiful), never shows "weakness" and by gods, NEVER wants to address it. everyone may have concerns but they were given looks or barked at before they even got to their questions so they know better than to ask. but nhs rarely goes with what his brother wishes for and if he doesn't let him take care of him, he'll raise to the position as if he was a respected leader, perhaps deal with problems his own ways behind nmj's back, anything to unload off of nmj's worries. all while nmj still sees his silly brother that refuses to take responsibility. nhs was the one who got all the wens killed in the first place 💅

I sorted through all of the books from my old basement this morning and found a dozen I’ll keep. Tons of kids books, so Ty pulled what he wants and boxed them up. Lila will need to stop by to claim hers and the rest will get donated.

I’m in a heady space now after opening a brown craft paper covered hardback journal. The first three pages are Ty’s father’s words - his hopes and dreams for our future as a couple and as new parents. Then it’s some entries of mine during the pregnancy and about Ty’s birth and a bit after. Then a lot of empty pages. I was 25 but such a child. So hopeful and utterly unprepared.

Tucked in another book was a letter addressed to both of us at the house we rented for a year on Old Jaffrey Rd. in Peterborough, NH. I googled the address but it doesn’t show the actual house. Just the acres and acres of meadow and forest surrounding it. I remember taking endless leaves and walking and sledding and building snowmen and running from the black flies. At night the woods were so silent in winter. The land felt ancient and steady. The sky sheltering. I want that again. Obviously not with him.

Grief is a shadow dancing on my tongue.
