Shopkeepers of Newtown
I went down to the State Library a few days ago to check out Nic Bezzina's photographic exhibition Shopkeepers of Newtown. It makes me happy to see a nod to my favourite suburb home to Gould's Books, The Newtown Jets, Clem's Chicken and resting place of Eliza Donnithorne, the woman who was (possibly) the inspiration for Miss Havisham in Charles Dicken's Great Expectations. Walking in to the show I was greeted by the portraits a number of Newtown's shopkeepers, in situ so to speak; seated behind their counters, standing in front of their products or machinery, telling their stories. Each portrait was accompanied by the subject's own words regarding their passions and life story.
Spread over two rooms, Bezzina's body of work documented the inhabitants of the cool, shady banks of King Street and its mighty tributary; Enmore Road. Frankly I would have liked to have seen more of the buildings and businesses that his subjects inhabit, for the sake of context. But for this project Bezzina has chosen to focus on the human element of the retail strip; he intends the project to be a historical record of some of the characters who were keeping shop in Newtown the Twenty-Teens. Go and check it out! It's a touching and ephemeral tribute to some of the people who help to make a special place special.
