Neo-Classical/Augustan Age
The term 'Augustan Age' comes from the self-conscious imitation of the original Augustan writers, Virgil and Horace, by many writers of the period. The literature of this period, which confirmed to Pope's aesthetic principles is distinguished by striving for harmony and precision, its urbanity and it's imitation of classical models.
Time Period~
The 18th century in English literature is known as the Augustan age, the Neo-Classical Age, and the Age of Reason.
Social and Economic Background~
•The 18th Century saw the establishment of the modern party politics with two opposing parties- Whigs and Tories.
•The emergence of Britain from isolationism to internationalism, the change in economic policy from mercantilism to lassiez-faire capitalism, the growth of the British Empire and the start of the Industrial Revolution.
•Between 1700 and 1800, England's population increased frantically. Literacy also grew at a fast rate. The proliferation of the printing press, the cheapness of paper, and the rise of literacy and economic status meant that many more people could participate in reading.
