China announces fourth aircraft carrier. Will it be the first nuclear propulsion?
China will soon inform if the newest aircraft carrier will be powered by nuclear energy
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 03/07/2024 - 08:34in Military
The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLAN) Navy officially announced that it will build the country's fourth aircraft carrier, Type 004, stating that doubts about whether it will be powered by nuclear or conventional energy will be addressed soon.
Yuan Huazhi, the political commissioner of the PLA Navy, released this information during Two Sessions, the simultaneous annual meeting of the National People's Assembly (APN) and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CCPPC) that took place in Beijing, while addressing issues about the aircraft carrier propulsion system and its strategic role.
Tumblr media
In response to questions from the Hong Kong Commercial Gazette, Yuan Huazhi, also a deputy of the National People's Assembly (APN), remained silent about whether the fourth aircraft carrier would be powered by nuclear energy. He said: "We will tell you soon," suggesting that a formal announcement on the subject is imminent.
Tumblr media
Yuan emphasized that there are no technological bottlenecks in the development of China's aircraft carriers, stating that progress is proceeding smoothly. He clarified that the expansion of China's aircraft carrier fleet is not intended to compete with the United States, but to safeguard national sovereignty, territorial integrity and rights.
When asked about the ability to fight U.S. aircraft carriers in the Western Pacific, Yuan said: "Trust us, we can. We don't just deal with aircraft carriers. We also deal with [potential threats] comprehensively."
Tumblr media

Analysts were cited by the Global Times debating the energy source of the new aircraft carrier. Some expect it to be powered by nuclear energy, citing the advantages of unlimited range. However, others argued in favor of a conventional propulsion aircraft carrier, similar to the third Fujian aircraft carrier, citing cost efficiency and faster generation of combat capability.
On Twitter last year, Henri Kenhmann speculated that the new concept of Jiangnan aircraft carrier could be powered by nuclear energy, something that has long been considered of interest to PLAN. Nuclear propulsion gives ships an effectively unlimited range, although they still need to be refueled for other reasons. Nuclear power also has benefits when it comes to generating the electricity that modern warships need to properly power advanced weapons, sensors, mission systems and more.

Currently, the PLA Navy operates two conventional propulsion aircraft carriers, the Liaoning and the Shandong. The third aircraft carrier, Fujian, is currently undergoing mooring tests and is expected to carry out tests at sea later this year.
Tumblr media

Observers reported that the deployment of aircraft carriers in China is aligned with the general standard, where a third of the time is spent on maintenance, one third on training and only one third on deployment. “Having three aircraft carriers means that the PLA Navy can only have one aircraft carrier at its disposal at any given time,” noted one expert. With the addition of a fourth aircraft carrier, China intends to improve its strategic capabilities.

Japan starts sea tests of its second modified helipter carrier for F-35B jets
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 12/28/2023 - 22:22 in Military
The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) began sea testing for its JS Kaga (DDH 184) helipter carrier after undergoing significant modifications to accommodate F-35B fighters, as announced by JMSDF on December 25.
New images shared on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), by the service's Escort Flotilla Four depict JS Kaga leaving his pier at the Japan Marine United (JMU) shipyard in the city of Kure, Hiroshima province, to undergo tests at sea.
The Escort Flotilla Four post expressed enthusiasm, stating: "Today's post is about JS Kaga during the sea tests. There is only a little time left until the special modification of JS Kaga is completed! We can't wait!"
Tumblr media
The port of origin of JS Kaga is the JMSDF Naval Base of Kure, where the Fleet Four Escort Division is stationed. Although the official date of the sea tests was not disclosed by the JMSDF, an officer confirmed to Naval News that the initial sea tests took place on November 13.
JS Kaga left the JMU shipyard pier in Kure on April 20, marking its first departure in more than a year, after undergoing modifications that transformed its appearance into that of a light aircraft carrier. Notable changes ?? included the modification of the bow section of its cockpit from a trapezoid to a square shape, similar to those of the Wasp class and America-class amphibious assault ships of the U.S. Navy.
Tumblr media
JMSDF plans to complete the modification of its two Izumo-class helipter carriers, JS Izumo and JS Kaga, into aircraft carriers capable of supporting the operations of Lockheed Martin F-35B fighters until fiscal year 2027.
For JS Kaga, the renovation work at JMU's Kure shipyard began in March 2022, involving initial modifications, such as cockpit reinforcement, installation of additional guidance lights, marking of yellow lines in the control cabin for F-35B launches and landings, and incorporating heat-resistant systems at points on the deck for vertical landings. Fiscal year 2023 will see the acquisition of Raytheon's Joint Precision Approach and Landing System (JPALS) and additional modifications to the satellite communication system.
Tumblr media
Subsequent and final modifications during the next revision of the Kaga, scheduled to begin at the end of fiscal year 2026, will include changes to the ship's interior compartments.
Tumblr media

Meanwhile, Izumo is expected to undergo modifications to the bow section of its cockpit, transforming it from trapezoid to square during the next fiscal year of 2024, starting in April. The JMSDF allocated $287.3 million for the modifications of the bow section of Izumo in fiscal year 2024 and an additional $4.2 million for the installation of a landing navigation system, which is expected to be Raytheon's JPALS. The Izumo class ships, measuring 248 meters in length and moving 26,000 tons at full load, are the largest Japanese military ships built since World War II, with the capacity to carry up to 14 helicopters.

Chinese Navy Fujian aircraft carrier advances with J-35 stealth fighter tests
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 12/13/2023 - 12:15 in Military
The recent progress of the Chinese Navy is evident in the Fujian aircraft carrier, Type 003 model, including tests with the J-35 stealth jet.
The tests include electromagnetic catapults with two red vehicles and an aircraft similar to the J-35 stealth fighter on deck, as reported by passengers flying over the aircraft carrier.
Chinese media sources released new photos depicting Fujian's activities, including the J-35 stealth fighter, initially identified from low-resolution images and later confirmed in sharper images. This aircraft is probably the first to undergo electromagnetic catapult tests in Fujian.
Tumblr media
The J-35 is a next-generation multifunctional poaching fighter, developed by China as an improved and combat-ready version of the FC-31, an aircraft carrier-based fighter. Scheduled to debut in 2021, the J-35 is a collaborative effort led by the Chinese Aeronautical Establishment, AVIC's Shenyang Aircraft Research and Design Institute and the 29º Chengdu Research Institute of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation.
Tumblr media
The FC-31, predecessor of the J-35, debuted in 2012. However, China has never mass-produced it, mainly due to inexperience in the manufacture of jet engines. The FC-31 is equipped with Klimov RD-33 engines, the same as those used in Russia's MiG-29 aircraft. China has faced challenges in the design of high-performance turbofan engines with post-combustion, especially in metallurgy, although it has made significant progress in other aircraft components.
Tumblr media
The J-35 meets the urgent need of the People's Liberation Army Navy for a stealth fighter capable of operating from future aircraft carriers. This is partly a response to the U.S. F-35B and F-35C stealth fighters developed for amphibian assault ships and aircraft carriers.
After the inaugural flight of the J-35 in 2021, it is expected to undergo about five years of testing before active service. As the FC-31 has been tested for many years as a technical demonstrator, this testing period may be reduced, according to Chinese defense experts.
Tumblr media

Satellite images from November 2023 indicated that Fujian temporarily left its pier, suggesting an imminent maritime test. With a displacement of almost 80,000 tons, the aircraft carrier can accommodate more than 20 aircraft, such as the J-35 twin-engine jet.
In addition to the J-35, other aircraft scheduled for testing include the KJ-600 early air alert aircraft and the Z-20 utility helicopter, which has already been widely deployed in several Chinese military branches. The KJ-600, crucial for aircraft carrier combat capability, will probably follow the J-35 in the test sequence. Unmanned aerial vehicles are also on the testing agenda, with a forecast to be tested after the J-15T and Z-20.

China releases new images of its next-generation aircraft carrier
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 04/01/2024 - 11:00 in Military
Chinese state media released new images of China's most advanced aircraft carrier to date, including next-generation launchpads that can catapult a wider range of aircraft from its deck.
First displayed to the public in June 2022, the Fujian was entirely designed and built in-house.
However, to carry out its first tests at sea, the aircraft carrier is larger and technologically more advanced than the Shandong, commissioned in 2019, and the Liaoning, which China bought second hand from Ukraine in 1998 and remodeled internally.
On state television on Tuesday night, the Fujian was seen being towed by a smaller vessel with all three rails of its electromagnetic catapult system visible on its deck.
“In the new year, we will take advantage of every minute, work with determination and strive to be ready for combat as soon as possible,” state television said, citing a Fujian official.
Tumblr media
Fujian has been conducting tests, including mooring tests, before the tests at sea, which some observers expected to take place until 2023. The aircraft carrier began the launch tests of its electromagnetic catapult system in November, according to the state-controlled Chinese newspaper, Global Times.
In addition to the Ford Class aircraft carriers, a new class of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers that is being developed for the U.S. Navy, the Fujian will be the only aircraft carrier in the world equipped with the latest Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS). The new images also show a model of the Shenyang J-15 fighter on the back of the flight deck.
Tumblr media
The Chinese version of EMALS can launch more types of aircraft than Shandong or Liaoning, and will also be more reliable and energy efficient, a milestone in the modernization of the Chinese armed forces.
President Xi Jinping repeatedly called for greater combat readiness and technological advances before the 100º anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army (ELP) in 2027. Some senior U.S. military officials previously said that China would launch a military takeover of Taiwan during that year.

In the run-up to the presidential and parliamentary elections of January 13, Taiwan reported that China continued its daily military activities in the Taiwan Strait and around the democratically governed island.
Chinese fighters also occasionally crossed the midline of the strait, which previously served as an unofficial barrier, but which Beijing says it does not recognize.

China plans to build more aircraft carriers
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 04/24/2023 - 08:56 in Military
The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) revealed plans to build additional aircraft carriers for its Navy, while the third Fujian warship began propulsion tests.
On April 23, China celebrated the 74th anniversary of the founding of the Navy of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLAN). From April 22 to 24, the service opened many naval bases along its coastal regions to the public, during which it also exhibited some of its powerful warships, including the Type 052D Kaifeng destroyer and the Type 054A Daqing frigate.
Since the launch of Fujian on June 17, 2022, the aircraft carrier has successfully carried out propulsion and anchoring tests before its next maiden voyage, reported the state-owned China Central Television (CCTV).

Tumblr media
“To complete the propulsion test, Fujian will leave the pier and conduct a sea navigation test,” Song Zhongping, a Chinese military expert and TV commentator, told the Global Times on Sunday.
Judging by the current progress, the navigation test will probably take place later this year, Song said.
The 80,000-ton Fujian is China's first aircraft carrier equipped with an electromagnetic aircraft launch system, making it more advanced than the country's first two aircraft carriers, Liaoning and Shandong, which are smaller and use ski jump ramps to help aircraft take off with lower efficiency.
youtube
China's vast maritime areas mean that three aircraft carriers alone cannot meet their demand, so it is certain that the country will build new aircraft carriers, CCTV said in the report.
Tumblr media
Chinese naval expert Li Jie told the Global Times that "if a country wants to deploy aircraft carriers effectively, it needs a certain number of them, because as a type of large warship, an aircraft carrier spends a lot of time on maintenance and training outside combat readiness missions."

The U.S. Navy maintains eleven 100,000-ton nuclear-powered aircraft carriers in active service. China's future aircraft carriers may also be powered by nuclear power, analysts said.

Mega exercise of the Indian Navy brings together 35 fighter planes, two aircraft carriers and submarines
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 11/06/2023 - 12:28in Military
The Indian Navy recently performed a mega exercise in the Arabian Sea, demonstrating its combat prowess with two aircraft carriers, several warships, submarines and more than 35 combat aircraft.
According to PTI, the aircraft carriers - INS Vikramaditya and the newly inaugurated INS Vikrant - were central parts of the operation.
Meanwhile, Indian Navy spokesman Commander Vivek Madhwal reported on the exercise on Twitter: "The perfect operational integration of the two aircraft carriers... Indian Ocean and beyond."
Tumblr media
After the introduction of INS Vikrant in September, this was the first mega exercise of the fleet involving the two aircraft carriers.
Tumblr media
Madhwal shared a video of the naval mega fleet and said it demonstrated the "formidable ability of the Indian Navy to ensure sustained air operations throughout the vast maritime expanse and emphasizing our commitment to protecting India's national interests".
Tumblr media
The exercise, which was a Carrier Battle Group (aircraft carrier battle group) with the two aircraft carriers, included aircraft such as the MiG-29K and helicopters such as the MH-60R Seahawk, Kamov, Sea King, Chetak and ALH.
Tumblr media
Officials told the PTI that almost all air assets were operated by the two aircraft carriers, which functioned as mobile bases.
Tumblr media
"In addition, they (aircraft carriers) provide our friends with a guarantee... the Indian Navy is capable and ready to support our 'collective' security needs in the region," Madhwal said.
Tumblr media
The exercise was carried out at a time when China is increasing its presence in the Indian Ocean.

The newest aircraft carrier of the Chinese Navy was launched at Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai on June 17, after weeks of preparations and speculation about its launch date.
With this milestone, China is approaching having an aircraft carrier that could be considered a "super aircraft carrier", apparently similar in capacity to aircraft carriers of the Nimitz and Ford classes operated by the United States.

The Type 003, also known as Fujian, was launched after the start of construction of the ship in 2015 - the exact date is not known. Fujian is believed to be an evolution of the first two aircraft carriers, the Liaoning and Shandong, which are basically iterations of the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov designed by the Soviets currently in service with the Russian Navy.

It should be noted that the Type 003 incorporates a number of new technologies that will distinguish it from its predecessors.

One of the most important new capabilities of the Type 003 are the three electromagnetic catapults (known as EMALS in the USA) to launch fighters and other aircraft. Type 001 and Type 002 have ski ramps to launch fighters, which limits their maximum takeoff weight and affects weaponry and range. The US Ford class is the only other aircraft carrier to present EMALS technology, with France's future PANG aircraft carrier being a second future candidate.

The Type 003 is also expected to field a new generation air wing composed of navalized FC-31/J-35 poachers and KJ-600 control and early warning aircraft, with both types similar to U.S. Navy's F-35C fighters and E-2 Hawkeye platforms.

Although official information is scarce, analysts estimate the length of the Type 003 at about 317 meters, about 16 meters less than the Ford-class aircraft carrier of the U.S. Navy. With this size, the aircraft carrier will be able to board between 50 and 70 aircraft.

Clearly, the potential of such an aircraft carrier, along with an advanced air wing, in Taiwan-related contingencies is prominent in the thinking of many people, although the Type 003 is arguably as valuable as a means to generate more distant air power, starting with the strategically vital and much disputed South China Sea. The Type 003 and its battle group can also go far beyond that, expanding PLAN's footprint in emerging areas of interest, such as the Horn of Africa and beyond.

Meanwhile, despite leaving the dock dry today, Fujian is still at least several years away from full operational service, and a lot of work will still be needed to refine the concept of CATOBAR operations, as well as new elements of the air wing. However, the launch of this impressive new warship today continues the long march of PLAN to become not only one of the largest, but also one of the most capable navies in the world.
